Message From WERCC President and CEO Rakesh Naidu

DIVERSITY ENRICHES WINDSORESSEX BEAs MICHAEL MICHALSKI POSTMEDIA CONTENT WORKS

Rakesh Naidu, President and CEO of the Windsor-Essex Regional Chamber of Commerce, says as the fourth-most diverse region in Canada with people from more than 75 countries who speak over 100 languages, the Windsor-Essex region is enriched.

From the smallest of shops, to companies whose products encircle the globe, the finalists for the 29th Annual Business Excellence Awards are a true snapshot of the diverse Windsor-Essex economic landscape. To new Windsor-Essex Regional Chamber of Commerce President and CEO, Rakesh Naidu, this is exactly the image he wants the region – and the world – to see. It’s one more reason to celebrate when the awards are announced at Caesars Windsor’s Augustus Ballrooms Wednesday, April 24, 2019. “We are very fortunate that we have diversity, not just in sectors and companies, but also in population. That is what is really enriching about our region,” states the former WindsorEssex Economic Development Corporation COO, an organization where he worked for 11 years. “We are the fourthmost diverse region in Canada – which is a great accomplishment by itself. We have people from over 75 countries. We speak over 100 languages. That is such an amazing thing that we have here.” Naidu adds: “When I talk to people about the stats here with people that come from outside of Canada and are looking at investing here, their eyes light up! They can’t believe (the stats).” A true multicultural landscape is a tangible business advantage whose rewards this area is just beginning to reap, says Naidu,

noting that the chamber is actively trying to plumb this resource on a global scale – to the benefit of both small and large businesses alike. “Our diversity opens the doors for us to do business with countries from where these people – who are now Canadian and Windsor-Essex residents – originally come from. They are now part of our community and are wanting to do business in many countries that, traditionally, we have not done business with. They are identifying these opportunities and are bringing these opportunities to our region. We’re really fortunate.” Chamber officials “get up every day and think about ‘what is the value we are adding to our members?’ so that they continue to be members but, more importantly, that they can become more successful as businesses that represent the Windsor-Essex region and helps us create more economic prosperity in the region,” he says. “It’s all about what we can do to help them to grow their business and provide assistance on how they can become more profitable, not just here but to grow their business outside the region as well.” The BEAs directly play into this aim, says Naidu. He categorizes the honours as important in acknowledging and encouraging the various businesses and people who run them, particularly in that, on the whole, the region is diversifying itself to not only brace for what may lie, ahead in business, but ultimately flourish. PRESIDENT & CEO MESSAGE N A I D U F R O M SR3

“Small, medium and large-set companies, they put in so much effort! It’s their sweat and blood that goes into it and everyone wants to do their best. Everyone wants to succeed. To reach a certain point either in their careers or in the business where they get recognized independently by judges that are very well-known in different fields – where things are looked at very objectively – as some of the very best in the region in various categories. It’s a big deal,” says Naidu. “It’s a big deal to be nominated and to be recognized. It’s wonderful to become a finalist and it’s definitely an honour to win a Business Excellence Award. Those that participate, I congratulate them. Those that are short-listed, I wish them the best and, those that will win, they are truly a great ambassador for our region. Hopefully they will continue to grow their business here and outside the region as well.” Naidu recognizes that businesses are well aware of “the potential headwind that they may face and hence are being very careful in terms of investment, in terms of operational efficiencies, leveraging technologies (and) leveraging automation . . . This bodes very

well for our region, especially for a region that is known for dealing with cyclical industries that go up and down. The employment or the usage of technology helps us prepare better for potential drops in business volumes or a downturn in the economy.” Among the nominees are several small businesses, what Naidu calls the “driver or engine of the economy.” No matter the size of the business, sound business principles are the same across the spectrum. “They are doing well – but they also need some help in terms of improving. They also need some help in becoming more efficient and more productive. “We have more than 33,000 businesses in the region. My belief is that, if we can find a way to have each of them add just one more person – and even if only one-third of those companies add one more person – that will add over 10,000 jobs to the region. “Through the Windsor-Essex Regional Chamber of Commerce, we are taking the initiative to provide that kind of support to them with multiple programs that you will hear more about as we launch them in the months to come. Our attention is on how do we get small businesses to grow?” says Naidu.

Believe Windsor Essex Award Recipient

Alan Quesnel President, The Alan Quesnel Family Foundation Alan Quesnel

Alan Quesnel started working at an early age of 11, understanding

that if he wanted something, he had to work hard for it. This focus has been his driving force behind everything he has accomplished since that early time. By the time he was 18, he had a part time job at Powerhouse – a premier gym for weightlifters at the time, and had completed a two-year law and security program from St. Clair College. With his work ethic and determination, he would not only

become a manager at Powerhouse, but would go on to hold a piece of the ownership of the new, larger location, renamed Total Fitness. Within a couple of years, he became the club’s sole owner, expanding the business by opening more locations. Alan also opened The Athletic Club in London which grew to 11 locations across Ontario. Building upon his positive business development, he invested in

restaurants and the bar industry enhancing economic growth and development. He decided to sell his companies in 2001 and create the Alan Quesnel Foundation in order to give back to the community at large. Alan has since donated millions to a number of local charitable causes making a direct positive impact on the Windsor-Essex community in which he was raised. Alan also gives back globally.

BEA 2019

BEA 2019 BEA AWARD NOMINATIONS The Business Excellence Awards (BEA) Volunteer Committee begins the nomination process by reviewing the award categories to ensure they match the current business climate. Then a simple nomination form including a 100-word summary of why an individual or business should be nominated is available to be submitted in the early fall for the following year’s BEA. Anyone in Essex County can nominate himself/herself or be nominated by someone else as long as they fit the category criteria. Chamber membership is not a criteria. The nominations are screened and those left, the semi-finalists, receive an information questionnaire to be completed and returned to the Windsor-Essex Regional Chamber of Commerce. This step requires an investment of time and effort, to provide specific information on how they meet the category criteria. Added documents including testimonials, photos, etc. provide more details for the judges to base their submission scores. Two independent volunteer judging panels, comprised of local businesspersons and community leaders, complete the semi-finalist judging in each category. The judges base their scoring completely on the nominee’s submission and a site visit in one category. No member of the judging panel shall have direct family or financial involvement with any of the semi-finalists. All submissions are treated in confidence and the judges sign a conflict of interest and confidentiality agreement. If there is a conflict, the submission is removed and given to another judge. The judging panel then meet, review their scores and complete deliberation to determine the three finalists is each category who best adhere to the eligibility criteria and the overall goals of recognizing business excellence. The judges decisions are final and remain confidential. This year, finalists were announced at a January News Conference & Reception sponsored by Media Street Productions Inc. The final step is the announcement of the recipient of each category on April 24, 2019 at Caesars Windsor.

History of the Business Excellence Awards

CELEBRATING 29 YEARS

Twenty-nine years ago, the inaugural BEA Committee was formed. This committee was a result of the Small Business Committee of the Windsor-Essex Regional Chamber of Commerce looking to establish an annual program that honours distinguished individuals for their entrepreneurial spirit and their efforts to enhance the economic vitality of Windsor-Essex. The mandate of the committee was to create a tradition that recognizes excellence in business within Windsor- Essex. In 2007 the BEA Committee announced new and exciting changes to the program. In true Hollywood style, finalists in each of the categories were announced prior to the event and the award recipients revealed at the Business Excellence Awards Evening. This new format allowed for all the award finalists to be highlighted in-depth. This change reinvented the awards show, and reinvigorated businesses and professionals in the community as well as the BEA Committee. The evolution of Business Excellence Awards brings you to what we have today; an outstanding networking reception with live entertainment, awards celebration followed by a fine dining experience for the BEA finalists, recipients, chamber members and guests. This is not just a business event – it is the business event of the year. The Business Excellence Awards evening is a year in the making. The call for nominations begins during the summer months and the volunteer judges have their meetings before the year end. The detail and attention given to this process is extreme. For the last 29 years, the judging process has been separate and apart from the BEA Committee and the Windsor-Essex Region Chamber of Commerce. The judges are made up of community members and represent a variety of businesses and sectors. The task of the judges is not an

An event of this calibre would not be possible without the dedicated businesses and individuals who provide the much-needed sponsorship support that is the foundation of the BEA’s success. easy one. Judges assess companies on the information supplied by the nominee including: sales growth, employment growth, product innovation, business ethics, environmental concern and contributions to the community, to name a few. Living in a community that proudly has so many business leaders, true entrepreneurs and that is so rich in business excellence makes the selection process all the more challenging. After the judges submit their reviews, the recipients in each cat-

egory with the highest evaluations are determined, and the awards ceremony takes place with hundreds of guests who share in the excitement of this full production celebration. The BEA Award has undergone a fantastic transformation over the years to become an envied work of art designed by a local glassworks company. An essential part of the evening’s success is the contributions provided by businesses and individuals in Windsor-Essex. The show
