Precedent 1: Electra Muzeon, Moscow, 2013

Architect: Ukolov / Osipova Initial reason: People interacting through similar interests
Electra Muzeon is based in Moscow along one of the main bike trails and is a multi-use hub. It was constructed using recycled shipping containers and houses an indoor shop / bike repair shop. On the roof of Electra Muzeon is an open space that is open for the occupants to use and interact between like-minded people who have the same interests in bikes. The key aspects of precedent one is finding a common interest within the community and creating a multi-use space where they can collaborate with one another. These ideas can be reflected in the project on implementing a space along a route that would benefit every user.11

Precedent 2: El Terrano, Mexico, 2022
Architect: Vertebal Initial reason: People connecting and educating each other
El Terrano is a community garden that is based within Mexico, the public space allows the occupants to come and interact with nature and one another. The project was developed in response to the COVID-19 pandemic enabling people of all demographics to come and connect through social stimulation. Respectively occupants can be educated or shown new ways of the cycles of food production and sustainable ways of living. Through architectural intervention the goal of encouraging human interaction with one another has been achieved through creating a common goal of either education or being apart of a communal project.12

I explored a precedent done by SYN architects who created the hometown moon chapel that connects people to their surrounding environment in both an artificial and organic approach. They use reflection to alter the occupant’s perception on the space around them to achieve their desired result of connectivity.

Architecture can not only connect us with our community but also with ourselves. This is done through triggering an emotional connection through our sensors to a particular object, so much so that we can affiliate a particular piece of architecture with a prior experience, just like in the second precedent by Olafur Eliasson connects occupants through out of the ordinary installations. Using open space in architecture as a mediation for where social connections can be safely made and without pressure of feeling forced. Through this encouragement social interactions can be strengthened within the community.
