ISABEL PARKINSON EDITORIAL

Clarendon life has continued apace this term, in a whirl of sunshine, Morris dancing, college formals, madrigals, and celebratory dinners.

Our May ball at the Randolph was a real highlight the 5am wake-up the next day was not, but it’s always a joy to see in May Morning with the traditional dawn choral singing at Magdalen Tower.

As I move into the third year of my DPhil in German I’ll be stepping back from my role on the Council, but will remain keenly involved in Clarendon life you will absolutely find me at any event that involves food, and there are rather a lot of those in the average Clarendon term — and will be eager to welcome a new batch of

OUTGOING COUNCIL

How many students does it take to run the Clarendon Scholars’ Association? Well, rather a lot! And as the year draws to a close, it’s only right that we reflect on all of the hard work put in by our excellent Council members throughout the year.

From a trip to Junkyard Golf, to our end-of-term dinner at Wilding Wine, from a formal at Pembroke College to disco ice-skating, we kept ourselves busy as the academic year drew to a close! With a new term, a new Council, and a new cohort of Clarendon Scholars just around the corner, we can look forward to another year of work and play, events of the high-octane and slightly more sedate variety, and, of course, plenty of good food and good friends!

I attended the Women of the Future’s annual networking reception in London, at KPMG. It brought together inspiring women from multiple generations and industries creating positive change. The opportunity exhibited the power of a women’s collective and how it can be pivotal to empoweringoneanotherwithinthe careersworkforce.

May Day Ball, 30th April 1st May

The Randolph Hotel which has, over its life, played host to Bill Clinton, Hugh Grant, and Inspector Morse proved the most perfect setting for our black-tie ball. The ballroom was adorned with fairy lights and candles, and our Scholars themselves were adorned with handmade flower crowns. The evening started with a three-course meal, and revellers were kept fuelled all night with mac ‘n’ cheese, crostini, platters of cupcakes, tacos and wraps and sliders, and tubs upon tubs of G&Ds ice cream.

Morris dancing was performed and bravely recreated, with mixed success before classic hits kept the dancefloor full all night. With spirited games of air hockey, flower walls and photo booths, impromptu conga lines and free flowing drinks, there was barely a moment to pause: the afterparty, and dawn, arrived in no time, whereupon the survivors headed to Magdalen College to hear the choir singing the traditional madrigals, welcoming in May and the start of a new season.
