Welcome to Clare County! Our Towns and Villages… Clare County provides a variety of recreation options and natural beauty for your spring, summer, fall and winter “getaways” or extended vacation. We are excited about all that Clare County has to offer and invite you to experience an affordable and enjoyable stay!

Clare, the “City of Festivals,” has festivals and events happening throughout the year. The town turns green for the annual 4-day Irish Festival in March, which is one of the city’s most known and well-loved events. Enjoy a host of Irish traditions including parades, bed races, kids’ fun run, craft show, musical performances, and even a Leprechaun contest!

As summer heats up, so do the festivals. The Summerfest Celebration provides old-fashioned fun for all ages with children’s games, a picnic in the park and fireworks over Shamrock Lake to end the day. During June and July the Summer Concert Series provides free musical entertainment in the

City Park. Heralding a Clare tradition, downtown shops are open Friday Nights on Historic US-27. Each 1st Friday of the month boasts a unique surprise from musicians on the sidewalks to Bike Nights to a Street Dance. BBQ, Brews & Tunes is a new event that is sure to entertain. The grand finale to summer events is the Old 27 Motor Tour Overnight Stop in downtown Clare and the Wine Walk 3.0. As summer turns to fall, the town prepares for two fun events: the annual Clare SpookTacular and Clare 5K Pumpkin Run/ Walk. Pumpkin painting, carnival games, hayrides, kids’ costume parade are just some of the activities that take place. The beginning of the holiday season is celebrated in Clare with a Christmas Festival & Elf Run each December. The downtown district of Clare offers shopping at its best! Recall a time when you could stroll a brick-lined sidewalk with trees draped in white lights, where each store is unique. Proprietors treat you as a special guest as you discover items ranging from clothing and collectibles to home decorating, biking gear, hardware, and of course, Celtic treasures. When you need a break from shopping, stop and enjoy a cup of coffee and breakfast, lunch or dinner in a relaxed atmosphere. And, for a special treat, visit the world-famous

Cops & Doughnuts Bakery. In addition to the wonderful stores downtown, many stores in the Clare area feature items from sporting goods at the renowned Jay’s Sporting Goods to Amish crafted goods. Visit the Amish Quilt Auction, Craft Show, and Flea Market the third weekend in May and the Friday and Saturday of the Labor

Day holiday.

found throughout the town. By adding bike lanes, community gardens, streetscaping that includes decorative concrete, lamps and bike art, they are creating an inviting atmosphere for a downtown feel.

Biking and hiking enthusiasts will welcome touring the picturesque PereMarquette Rail Trail, a 30-mile paved trail from downtown Clare to Midland. This portion of the Rails to Trails system is perfect for biking, hiking or skating as no motorized vehicles are allowed. In 2009, another section of this trail was paved from just west of Clare through Evart, and there are plans to pave more of this trail through Reed City and beyond. This route has been designated as US Route 20 which extends west to the Pacific coast! In addition, the Harrison campus of Mid Michigan Community College contains a trail system that is open for the public to enjoy. These trails are open year-round and are perfect for walking, running, biking, snow shoeing, and cross country

Make a trip to Harrison on Memorial Day weekend to find bargains galore at the annual Memorial Day Weekend Garage Sales event that is held in conjunction with the Harrison Car & Bike Show. Or, participate in the annual Middle O’Mitt Triathlon. Harrison has a slogan of “Twenty Lakes in Twenty Minutes” and as it suggests, water activities can play a big part in your pleasure here. Whether you enjoy boating and waterskiing, or a

more relaxed canoe, rowboat or pontoon ride, Harrison’s lakes and rivers will provide clean, clear water. Some of the best fishing anywhere can be found in these waters.

offers a spectacular Fourth of July Celebration, with a parade, demolition derby and fireworks. No summer would be complete without a visit to a good old-fashioned County Fair. The Clare County Fair has taken place in Harrison every summer since 1883, with many crowd-pleasing events, including harness racing, concerts, and a great Midway and country-style entertainment. Visit the Harrison Farmers Market Saturday mornings to pick up fresh produce and wonderful arts and crafts. Later in the summer, the fun celebrations continue with the Old 27 Motor Tour Stop & Street Fair. When visiting in winter, bring your golf

See page 10 for more information on these courses.

Experience the thrill of a world-class zip line tour at Snow Snake. Rocks and Valleys is Snow Snake’s off-road park that has over 200 acres of hills, rocks, mud and a variety of trails for different skill levels. The communities of Leota and Temple share some of Michigan’s 6.84 million acres of State and National forest, with the Muskegon River running through. Enjoy ATV/ORV trails, hunting, fishing, snowmobiling, camping, canoeing and tubing. Hike through the forest and enjoy nature at its finest. While here take in the Annual Car Show that is

held in Leota each summer. Be certain to try to catch a glimpse of the rare and

endangered Kirtland’s Warbler as they arrive to nest in the jack pine stands in Winterfield Township. This is one of the very few places in the world that these beautiful little birds nest. Lake George and Lake, in the southwest corner of Clare County, had their beginnings as logging towns and have retained much of that essence. They were home to one of the first successful logging railroads in Michigan, the Lake George & Muskegon Railroad. As their names suggest, lakes are central to these communities. Lake George’s Lincoln Township is home to the Hamlin Field Recreation Area which celebrates longtime resident Luke Hamlin “Hot Potato” who was a famous Detroit Tigers pitcher from 1928-1934. The Green Pine Lake Pathway, accessible from M-115 in the Au Sable State Forest, is also in this area of the county. This non-motorized trail is designed for hiking and cross-country skiing. Hunt for morel mushrooms in the spring and visit this trail during fall to take advantage of the crisp, clean air, and spectacular fall colors.

In July, take part in the exciting Lumberjack Festival & Crafts in the Park held in the park in the center of the village. Events include traditional lumberjack contests, as well as a log

carving competition. In addition, enjoy Farwell’s famous Labor Day Celebration where you will find funfilled events and entertainment. Round out your visit to Farwell in

the winter with a visit to the annual Holiday Lights Festival to enjoy an oldfashioned start to the holiday season.

See the map on page 32 of this Guide. The Village of Farwell also began as a logging community. Today there is a wonderful business district here with everything from antique shops to

Built in the early 1930’s, Firefly is Clare County’s oldest golf course. With the 1992 expansion to 18 holes, it became one of the most in-demand courses in the area. Exacting greens, water on 13 holes and bluegrass fairways built through gently rolling woodlands make firefly a challenge, whatever your handicap.

Eagle Glen golf course, central Michigan’s premier public facility, designed by Jerry Matthews, will test your game on every level. Situated on 188 acres of rolling central Michigan terrain, Ray Hearn and Jerry Matthews of Matthews and Associates have created a little corner of Scotland right here in central Michigan. Among the unique features of the course are bent grass tees, greens and fairways. Eagle Glen consists of a gigantic undulating green, natural wetlands, 70 bunkers and hundreds of mounds. It’s a course so distinctively special that it should be on every golfer’s “must play” list.

Outdoor Activities

Clare County is an outdoor paradise, with over 56,000 acres of State forests, 300 miles of rivers, 28 miles of snowmobile trails, and over 18 public access lakes. a short distance and can visit their many habitats such as lakes, fields, woodlands and wetlands. The 11 miles of trails were reconstructed in 2005 and 2006, providing a fresh look to the trails for all to enjoy. In the summer of 2006 a one-mile self-guided interpretive trail beginning at the Mud Lake Campground was made available. The interpretive trail provides information to hikers on the ecological importance of diverse habitats that can be found in Clare County. This is a perfect way to explore and learn about the environment in an enjoyable manner. Green Pine Lake Pathway has two accessible trailheads: • On M-115, just North of Lake Station Road • Mud Lake Campground off Brown Road

Hunting

Clare County is a favorite of hunters because of its tremendous number of small and large game species. You’ll find whitetail deer, turkey, partridge, squirrel and quail in our forests and meadows. Over 56,000 acres of state land are open to hunting, mainly in the northeastern and western sections of the county. Any questions regarding detailed hunting information on public lands should be directed to the Michigan DNR at: Harrison Operation Service Center (989) 539-6411 www.michigan.gov/dnr

Wildlife Habitat Due to the efforts of the DNR, EPA, and other groups and organizations, the rare Kirtland’s Warbler is making a comeback in Michigan! Of the scarce population of these small, beautiful songbirds, 98 percent breeds in northern Michigan. Clare County is home to some of these federally endangered birds! Winterfield Township, in the northwest corner of the county, contains a protected habitat to allow the very specific nesting conditions in young jack pine forests.

Fishing

Wonderful fishing opportunities abound in the many lakes and rivers located throughout the county. As a whole, Clare County has approximately 3,900 acres of open water and over 330 miles of rivers and streams! Across the county, 18 lakes have public access boat launches, and the Muskegon, Tobacco and Cedar Rivers are angler favorites. As a popular fishing destination for travelers, many trophy-sized fish have been recorded throughout the years. Individual lake maps are available upon request, for species and trophy fish taken. See maps on pages 36-39.

Biking, Hiking, and Walking Trails Green Pine Lake Pathway

A great way to experience nature in Clare County is by hiking the Green Pine Lake Pathway (see map on page 32). Hikers often encounter a wide variety of wildlife within

The Pere Marquette Rail-Trail The Pere Marquette Rail-Trail currently begins in Midland, Michigan and makes a continuous westward trek through the municipalities of Sanford, Coleman and Loomis, presently ending in downtown Clare. Currently the City of Clare is working on an extension of the Pere Marquette Rail-Trail designed to extend the existing portion of the

trail westward through the City of Clare to connect to a Michigan Department of Natural Resources trail which starts approximately two miles west of Clare and proceeds to Evart. In 2009, a section of this trail was paved from just west of Clare through Farwell and in 2010, was paved through the Village of Lake and on into Reed City. See map on page 33. For more information, visit Friends of the Pere Marquette Rail-Trail at www.LMB.org/pmrt. MMCC Trail System Mid Michigan Community College’s Harrison Campus sits on 560 acres of beautiful, wooded land. As a service to the community, the College and various community groups have developed trails through the property for the public to enjoy. See map on page 33.

ORV and Snowmobile Trails Access to Michigan’s extensive Off-Road Vehicle trails can be found in northern Clare County. The Leota ORV trailhead (maps on pages 34-35) is a Michigan DNR managed trailhead that provides access to over 55 miles of ORV trails for larger ORV’s and hundreds of miles of trails that can be accessed by quads or smaller traditional ORV’s. In addition, the Fur Farm snowmobile trail starts just north of the city of Harrison and joins up with the Leota Trail. For more off-road excitement Snow Snake has their Rocks & Valleys Off-Road Park.

Skiing Boarding Tubing

Proper licensing is required of all vehicles using these trails or parking at the trailhead. Any questions regarding proper licensing of ORV vehicles or rules of trail usage should be directed to the Michigan Department of Natural Resources at: Harrison Operation Service Center (989) 539-6411 www.michigan.gov/dnr Spring and Fall Color Trails Clare County is called ‘The Gateway to the North’ for good reason; most of our county is undeveloped wooded lands that turn into an explosion of color during spring and autumn. If you are fortunate enough to be traveling in Mid-Michigan during this time of year, enjoy our natural firework display. The route is all primary roads and will be well-worth the journey. If you have more time to enjoy the colors, traveling throughout any part or our county and walking the Green Pine Lake Pathway hiking trail (map on page 32) would be well-worth your time. Boating & Canoeing

Wilson State Park

We may not have Lake Superior, but we do have superior lakes! Clare County boasts an amazing number of lakes, rivers and streams. While some are reserved for private use, many offer public access with great fishing, boating and recreational activities. Rent a row boat at Lakeside Waterfront Lodging in Harrison by calling 888-999-1145.

On March 17, 1900, Mr. William Wilson of Wilson Brothers Lumber Company deeded 40 acres of beautiful woodland on the banks of Budd Lake to the City of Harrison to be used as a park. In 1939, the Civilian Conservation Corp crew constructed the main park building, which is still used today. They also built a stone residence with rock from Clare, Missaukee and Gladwin counties.

The Muskegon River meanders through Clare County, offering opportunities to canoe, kayak or tube through magnificent scenery. Contact Duggan’s Canoe Livery at 3240 N. Temple Dr., Harrison 989-539-7149 to enjoy this.

Write the park directly at Wilson State Park, 910 First Street, Harrison, Michigan 48625 or call the State Park reservation number: (800) 44-PARKS. Wilson State Park may be phoned directly at (989) 539-3021.

Bring your kids or be a kid again at one of Clare County’s great beaches. Soak up the sun, splash in the water or build sand castles till sunset. See lake table and lake maps, pages 36-39.

Run/Walk/Bike

There are many events and activities in Clare County to competitively run, walk, or bike. These include, the Irish Road Race, 5K Freedom Run/Walk, Rust Shaker Mountain Bike Race, Timber Trail Trot & XT, Sweat Shaker Mountain Bike Race, Lumberjack Days Bike Ride, Clare 5K Pumpkin Run, and the Elf Run 5K. To name a few! In June the Middle O’ Mitt Multi Sport Mania takes place in Harrison! Amish of Clare County Clare County is home to a large community of Amish, with roots going back to the original founders from Switzerland.

The Amish way of life is one of simple enjoyment of the land and community. Skills are passed down through the generations; and the Amish craftsmen are renowned for their finely crafted products including furniture, quilts and baskets. Baked goods and produce from their farms are offered for purchase along the roadsides when weather permits. The Yoders and their friends hold a large quilt auction and craft show each spring (third Fri. and Sat. of May) and late summer (Fri. and Sat. of Labor Day weekend). Imagine farm fields transformed with rows of crafters, antiques and flea marketers – hundreds of vendors in all! This event is one of the largest, well attended, craft shows, flea markets and quilt auctions in Michigan. In addition to the Amish crafted furniture, quilts and goods, one may purchase an array of arts and crafts items, discounted tools, jewelry, cutlery, jams and plants – to name a few. A number of concession stands and several food specialty tents, featuring baked goods and cheese, are hosted by the Amish women. Parking is best in downtown Clare with shuttle services running to and from the auction site on a regular basis. The Yoders also host a horse and equipment auction two weeks before the quilt auction each spring and two weeks after each fall.

Historical Barns While touring Clare County, look for historical barns with round roofs. The countryside is being refreshed with freshly renovated barns through the efforts of organizations such as Michigan Barn Preservation Network and the National Trust for Historic Preservation. Pictured is the 2004 BARN AGAIN Farm Heritage Award winner on the centennial farm of Leo J. Fitzpatrick.

Clare Depot Usually trains move while train depots remain stationary. That was not the case in Clare when the 119-year old Clare Railroad Depot was moved approximately 900 feet to its new home on Fourth Street in April 2014. The move is an exciting first step in the rehabilitation of the depot. The Clare Union Depot, which was built in 1895, has a unique design with its “Queen Ann” architectural style that has two separate wings—one to accommodate each of two railroad lines. It is the only known one of its kind in Michigan, and one of the few remaining in the country. The depot was built in 1887, destroyed by fire in 1894, and rebuilt in 1895. Constructed by the Pere Marquette & Ann Arbor Railroads, it was used for passenger service on the Ann Arbor line until 1950 and on the Pere Marquette Line for a few years more. Once rehabilitated, the depot will again become one of the cornerstones of Clare’s downtown and a landmark building —just as it was nearly 120 years ago. The planned uses for the depot include space for the Clare Area Chamber of Commerce and visitor information space for the Clare County Visitor’s Bureau; offices, a studio, and an education center for the Clare County Arts Council; and a community museum with historic railroad memorabilia and artifacts displays. In addition, it will be a welcome center/trailhead for visitors and users of the rail-trail. For more information about this exciting project please visit www.claredepot.com or facebook.com/ Clare-Depot-Restoration-Project

Art & Quilt Block Trails An exciting arts and cultural scene is important to Clare County’s exceptional quality-of-life. Many local groups and organizations are helping to provide events and activities promoting this important aspect of our area. The Clare County Quilt Block Trail brings together the rich heritage of quilting, farming, and community engagement. The trail involves various sizes of quilt blocks placed on area barns, public buildings, businesses, fences, and houses in the Clare County area. Take time to explore this trail while visiting our area. For more information about this trail please visit the Clare County Arts Council Website at www.clarecountyartscouncil.info The Art Alley in downtown Clare and the Bike Art in Harrison are two new additions to the arts and culture scene. Both enrich the area with vibrant and fun art exhibits. New in 2016 will be the ART -traction Arts and Culture Bike Trail which will tie together various aspects of the arts throughout the area. Quilt Block photos are on loan from the Clare County Arts Council. www.clarecounty.com • 800-715-3550 •

History of Clare County In 1840, the Michigan State Legislature named the county Kaykakee after a Sauk Indian Chief. In 1843, the county’s name was changed to “Clare” by an Irish surveyor after his native “County Clare” in Ireland. Established in Michigan’s lumbering era, the area was home to the first successful logging railroad, the Lake George & Muskegon RR. This line helped revolutionize the logging industry. Timber, the Muskegon and Tobacco Rivers, abundant land, and a railroad translated to profit and the area has thrived since. In years past, the railroad served as a lifeline to the rural communities in Clare County through the transport of lumber, goods, and supplies. Also, the trains carried passengers to and from various points in the State. Restoration of the depot in Clare, one of the few remaining of its kind, are currently taking place.

Purple Gang The Purple Gang was a notorious group of mostly young Jewish men that controlled a large portion of Michigan, from U.S. 31 to the eastern border of the state. The most infamous happening at the Doherty Hotel was on May 14, 1938 when Central Michigan oil promoter, Carl Jack Livingston, shot and killed Isaiah Leebove in the Tap Room of the hotel. Mr. Leebove was an attorney with ties to the infamous Purple Gang. The home he built in Clare is located just north of downtown Clare.

Historical Art

The Federal Art Project of the Works Progress Administration was established by Franklin Delano Roosevelt in mid-1935. The nation was in an economic depression; millions were unemployed. The WPA’s mission was to take 3.5 million people off relief and put them to work. Within a year, some 5,000 artists were busy on WPA. Clare’s Middle School auditorium has four murals by Gerald Mast (picture on page 25). Each mural depicts a theme of the 30’s: Peaceful Endeavor, Agriculture, Education, and Industry. This is truly a national treasure. Located at the entrance to the Middle School is the majestic Pioneer Mother statue by artist Samuel Cashwan (pictured at left). Both art treasures were dedicated to the school, then the Clare High School, in 1938, as part of the WPA project for artists. They are located at 209 E. State Street, just two blocks from downtown Clare. Call 989-386-9979 to arrange for a tour of the murals. The Clare Post Office on Fifth St. is another great place to see a sample of one of the WPA murals (pictured at right). View the mural during regular postal business hours. The Doherty Hotel, downtown Clare, also boasts depression era murals painted by Jay McHugh in 1932 (pictured on page 25). © Copyright Clare County Convention & Visitors Bureau, all rights reserved.

MMCC Public Trail System Mid Michigan Community College’s Harrison Campus sits on 560 acres of beautiful, wooded land. As a service to the community, the College and various community groups have developed trails through the property for the public to enjoy. These trails are open all year long for walking, running, biking, snow shoeing, and cross country skiing. We simply ask that you follow the posted rules. There are four trails that make up the trail system. The three walking/running trails are each 1 mile long and make a 3 mile loop. No bikes are allowed on these trails. The bike trail is a rigorous 10 mile trail through various terrain and grades. Visit the Northeast Chapter of the Michigan Mountain Biking Association for information about scheduled rides. Walkers/hikers are allowed on this trail. © 2009 Mid Michigan Community College. All rights reserved. MMCC, 1375 S. Clare Ave., Harrison, MI 48625.

Pere Marquette Rail-Trail Since its opening in 1993, the Pere Marquette Rail-Trail of Mid-Michigan has been used extensively by people of all ages for walking, running, bicycling and in-line skating. It has also been used for transportation to work, shopping, and recreational events. Family use has been particularly evident, as well as use by both senior citizens and youth. The Rail-Trail protects the historical integrity of the old Flint & Pere Marquette Railway, including its unique bridges. It provides access to rivers, parks and historical areas.
