Claiborne’s softball team looks to be exciting on the diamond during the upcoming season. Three seniors and four juniors will anchor an equally young team that will include eight sophomores and freshmen. Rachel Cupp and Lillie Cox will be the ones bringing the heat from the circle with freshman Emma Myatt also spending time there. The infield looks strong and the outfield could be a strength of the 2020 team. Coach Steven Cupp likes what he sees in practice and has high hopes for this group of players. “So far I’ve been very pleased with the girl’s effort and overall attitude. Ready to get the basketball girl’s to practice soon. If the girl’s play to their potential, I think we will be very competitive and hopefully come away
with a district title. We have several freshman that have the capability of making a difference.”

Last season this team was close to being able to defeat any team they played on any given evening and they should play even better in 2020.
The 2020 Cumberland Gap softball team will be young again as they will place six juniors, six sophomores and seven freshmen out on the diamond. The talent is there and there is a new head coach, Jeremiah Bean. Although the team hasn’t got senior leadership this season, Bean is pushing for all – out effort. Coach Bean spoke of what the team is capable of and what he expects of them. “I think we will be competitive. Everyone wants to be at the top, but it’s a process. We don’t have any seniors but have a great group of young players. All I ask is they give me effort and compete. We do those two things and we win a lot of games.” He went on to say, “I think this district is really tough and my goal is to win it. We have to build it to do that. It takes players and time.” Alana Bean, Neveah Kerns, Kerry Dixon and Gracie Joyce will be the ones expected to give time in the circle.

The Claiborne Bulldogs baseball team is looking to take one more stride this season and that’s going deeper into the post season. They have a great senior core backed up by three juniors. Six sophomores will join 10 freshmen to complete an exciting baseball team. Almost every player is listed as a pitcher but the rotation will likely look like this: Alex Boling, Daniel Atkins, Wesley Brooks, Joe Houser, Challen Massengill, Chase Foster, Haydn Hollin and Tyler Myatt. Either one of these pitchers will be called upon to provide work as needed.

Matthew Bussell, Jim Boling, Jerry Myatt and Kyle Wentz will be assisting Coach Foster. Bulldogs Head Coach / Manager will once again be Stephen Foster and he describes the 2020 team in this fashion. “Our team this year is much better than last year. We’re very athletic at every position. Fast on the bases and solid hitters in the entire batting order.” With the talent this team has plus capable arms on the mound look for the Bulldogs to make another deep run.

The Cumberland Gap Panthers baseball team has high hopes of making a deep run this season. The 2020 team has everything it needs from pitching to great players out in the field. Coach Nathan Hatmaker is extremely excited to get this season started and is expecting his team to do well. It all starts on the mound and the Gap will feature some great arms including Brennan Murphy, Peyton Wilder and Jeremiah Cannon to name just a few. There will be eight players expected to make appearances on the mound. The infield and outfield look to be solid as well and the only question remaining is
how they will perform at the plate. Coach Hatmaker is excited about his 2020 team. “As far as my kids go I’m blessed I have a great group of guys who all get along well and I enjoy being around them every
day. So going into this season I look for our team to be better all around. We are a lot older this season than we were last year. My coaching staff and I have made some changes to a couple of our philosophies and I think that if we buy into those and execute we will have a successful season.”
