During the school year basicREC is open to all Frederick County elementary students. The basicREC program will provide your child with exceptional recreational opportunities before and after school Children will engage in active games and participate in art projects, crafts, sports, and fitness programs. Weather permitting, activities will take place outside.

BALLET
Creativity, dancing, and fun are all part of this ballet class. Dancers will learn ballet basics, including names of positions and how to perform them. Ballet experience is not required, but ballet slippers are. Ballet slippers need to be authentic. Parents are asked to stick around if their child needs them to. Class will not be meeting the week of 9/25-9/29 and 11/20-11/24.

MELODYVILLE MUSIC CLASSES
Caregivers with toddlers explore music together through singing, movement, musical books, instruments, and lots of playful fun! All participants must be accompanied by an adult guardian.
TAP
Young tap dancers will love the enthusiasm and fun of this class! Dancers will be introduced to fundamental rhythms and steps. While improving basic motor skills, they also have an opportunity to develop proper dance etiquette and social skills. Tap experience is not required, but tap shoes are. MUSIC AND ME

WEE STAGE ACTING
Wee Stage young actors learn to expand their imagination beyond words on a page. JUNIOR STAGE ACTING
Junior Stage focuses on the techniques of building theatre pieces through scene study, coaching in speech, improvisation, and stage technique. By emphasizing the importance of the ensemble, “the team”, students learn to work together to create a performance. Confidence and trust building activities are woven into rehearsing theatrical pieces to encourage positive ensemble ship. Junior Stage students work on selected scenes from age-appropriate plays to begin the training of working on a production. At the final class, family and friends will be invited to a performance.

ACTING FOR ADULTS
An intensive introduction to scripted work through preparation and performance of scenes and monologues. Emphasis on learning effective rehearsal techniques and expanding the actor’s range. An essential training in the basics of building the actor’s craft.

ACTING THROUGH SONG
Acting Thru Song is a class designed exclusively for middle and high school students. Prior singing experience is not necessary. The idea is to expose students to the genre and give them opportunities to flex their performing muscle through solo work on song/s selected for (and with) each individual student. This will not be a competitive environment, but rather, an educational one. All students will receive individual coaching and instruction on preparing their selections, with the emphasis on learning how to interpret and portray the meaning and/or objective of the song, and how to “act through” it. This is a great opportunity, in a non-threatening and non-competitive environment, to learn the skills needed for performing in a musical.

SENIOR STAGE ACTING
College prep acting technique is introduced expanding the teen mind, body, and imagination into creating original works that imitate real life. For the past ten years, Senior Stage has created pieces dealing with drug abuse, mental health, school shootings, family dynamics, being uniquely different and more. Teen actors dig deeper into using theatre as a medium to communicate questions that promote positive conversation and impact.

The Young Art Class is a creative and engaging program designed for young artists to explore their artistic skills and experiment with different techniques and materials. Whether it’s drawing funny cartoons, creating captivating illustrations, or participating in art critiques, the Young Art Class offers a diverse range of activities to inspire and nurture young artists’ creativity.

ARCHERY ON DEMAND
This 5-day beginner archery camp will focus on an introduction to target archery including range safety and basic forms for compound and recurve bows. The last day of the camp will end with competitive games for each archer to test their skills.

NATURE TOTS STORY TIME SERIES
Learn to explore nature together in this 4-week nature story time series designed for your preschool-age tiny tot! HOMESCHOOL HIKERS NATURE SERIES
Get outdoors and learn about the natural world found in our park through crafts, games, and hikes in this 4-week nature series for elementary-age students. BASIC ESSENTIALS OF SURVIVAL
SHENANDOAH VALLEY RAISED BED CONTAINER VEGETABLE GARDENING
Are you looking to create a vegetable garden but are limited on time, space, or effort? The simplistic raised bed vegetable garden might be your answer! In this class, view a slideshow presentation, a scale model and receive a free book by local author, Rich Sankovich, on the benefits to building a raised bed garden versus traditional gardening. During the presentation attendees will learn the step-by-step approach to creating and maintaining a successful raised bed garden six to eight months per year without a rototiller. All attending participants will receive a copy of the author’s book: “Simplistic Raised Bed Vegetable Garden”. Participants under age 18 must be accompanied by an adult guardian.

Imagine this scenario: you are out for a fun day in the woods when you step off trail for just a moment -to see a waterfall, a cool mushroom, or to use the bathroom. You come to the realization that you are lost...now what? This class is designed to equip you with fundamental skills that can increase your chances of being rescued and surviving an unexpected night in the woods. Meet us once a month on Wednesdays from June through September to explore our park system & gather data that can be submitted to global citizen science projects! FIRST AID, CPR & AED COURSE
This course will prepare you to recognize and care for a variety of first aid, breathing, and cardiac emergencies involving adults, children, and infants. This course does meet OSHA workplace requirements. This is a blended learning course with a required online portion followed by an instructor-led classroom skill session. The online portion must be completed prior to attending the in-class portion. Upon successful completion of this course, you will receive a digital American Red Cross certificate for Adult and Pediatric First Aid/CPR/AED valid for two years.

GUI ESPORTS LEAGUE
Get ready for a full-length season of competitive gaming with the GUI Esports League. GUI is forming several Esports teams to go up against other teams from around the country in popular titles such as Fortnite, Valorant, Rocket League, Overwatch 2, Super Smash Ultimate, and Apex Legends! Get ready to hit the ground running this fall with the FCPRD Youth Running Club! We’re excited to welcome young runners aged 7-14, regardless of skill level. This season, we will have two locations to choose from -North (Redbud Elementary) or South (Sherando Park). When you sign up, you’ll gain access to amazing races such as Apple Harvest, Thanksgiving Day 5K and our own Rose Hill Mile. Our club emphasizes the importance of proper running techniques, stretching, and other useful information to make running enjoyable. Looking to participate in the Battlefield Half Marathon, but not sure where to start with your training? Look no further than our half marathon training program! Frederick County Parks and Recreation is partnering with Runners’ Retreat to bring a fun twist to one of their Thursday evening group runs! The Halloween Scavenger Hunt Fun Run is a great way to celebrate the spooky season while getting some exercise! Participants of all ages will run or walk while searching for Halloweenthemed items along the way. Teams will have one hour to run around, find items, take photos of items and return to Runners’ Retreat. After, we will have a social get together at Vibrissa Beer & Kitchen and announce the winner!

This year our Thanksgiving Day 5K celebrates 25 years! This event is perfect for all ages and skill levels, as participants can run or walk before their Thanksgiving feast. The 5K race is an electronic chip-timed event that takes place on a course consisting of track, pavement, and woodland trails. The event benefits the FCPRD PLAY Fund and prizes will be awarded to the top three male and female finishers and the top master male and female. This clinic is perfect to learn the basic skills of flag football. Your child will have the opportunity to work on throwing, catching, footwork, agility, change of directions with and without a ball, running patterns, and game skills. FCPRD is looking for you to help cheer on our flag football teams this fall. Games will be played on Saturdays starting in mid-September. Please provide your child’s shirt and pant size when registering. Practice days: One time per week, TBD depending on site.

Don’t miss the excitement of FCPRD flag football! This league provides participants with plenty of action while learning new flag football skills. In some cases, schools are combined to fulfill team requirements. If game cancellations occur, games are scheduled on days other than the regularly scheduled Saturdays. All participants are required to have a mouthpiece to participate. Please indicate the school your child attends or lives near when registering. We will make every attempt to keep participants near their desired location. K-1st Grade will get 1 practice a week. 2nd-3rd grade and older will get two practices a week. Make-up games will be held on Saturdays that are not already scheduled.

This league is designed to teach participants the fundamental skills of volleyball. They will be able to demonstrate their skills learned in games and an end of the season tournament. Teams will practice twice per week (M-F) and games will be on Sunday afternoons at any of four FCPRD facilities. RIVER RIDERS ADVENTURE TRIP
Enjoy a full day of outdoor activities as we visit River Riders Family Adventure Resort. Start the day with a flatwater tubing float down the Shenandoah River followed by 2 hours of exploring new heights at the Adventure Park. Join us at Sherando Park Northwest for a night of family camping fun on Saturday, October 14th! The evening will include an array of outdoor games and a movie at sunset. EMERALD POND BACKPACKING TRIP
Spend an evening at Emerald Pond, one of the Massanutten Mountains precious hidden gems! This is an 8-mile hike with some rocky terrain and elevation gain. Participants should be in good physical condition and be familiar with day hiking. A limited amount of gear will be available to borrow, but it is recommended that participants have their own gear.
*Participants must attend the trip meeting on Tuesday August 22nd from 6-7 PM at Sherando Park – Lions Shelter in order to take part in the trip. Trip meeting will cover more details about the trip, important safety information, and review of necessary gear (please bring your gear to the meeting).
