Once in a Lifetime As one of Ed Roseberry’s many careers, he served as the “in-house” photographer at Monticello, where he had the pleasure of working with former curator, James A. Bear, Jr. In 1965, Donnie McGregor of McGregor’s Motors and Ed set off on their own Lewis and Clark expedition to persuade James Bear to allow them to photograph their cars on the lawn of Monticello. Ed owned a 1941 Cadillac Fleetwood and Donnie owned a 1941 Lincoln Continental. Still on the road today, Ed’s Cadillac was purchased in 1951 from its original owners, Mr. and Mrs. L. Bright of Keswick. Captured in time, this classic luxury Cadillac automobile and Jefferson’s Monticello are recognized internationally as true American icons. Selected works of Ed Roseberry, images that have captured historic moments of Charlottesville’s people, places, and events, will be featured in albemarle throughout the year. Take time to tour Monticello this spring and visit Ed and his antique car at the Piedmont Regional AACA Car Show on April 27.

The International Regional Magazine Association presented albemarle Magazine a bronze medal in the Single Photo category for Once in a Lifetime, a photograph by legendary Charlottesville photographer Ed Roseberry of his 1941 Cadillac Fleetwood. This black-and-white image, captured in front of Thomas Jefferson’s Monticello, appeared in the April/May 2008 issue of albemarle Magazine.

We’d like to welcome you to the second annual Virginia Festival of the Wheel and to thank you for coming. Our vision when we conceived the event a couple of years back was to present a show that aimed at providing all of the participants with a good experience in a nice venue with amenities and a program that would make the event interesting and informative. Our mission was to raise awareness and support for the UVA Cancer Center, which has touched the lives of so many people, not just in Charlottesville but across the country in such a positive way. It is exciting to see so many beautiful cars, from Ferraris to Packards, in one place. But what is even more interesting are the stories behind the cars, the journeys that the car owners have taken to acquire their car and to bring them back to their former glory. When you walk through the Festival on Sunday and you see an owner polishing a spot on the chrome of his car, stop and ask him how long has he owned the car and what is its history. The car doesn’t define who the owner is but it does reflect who he is. You’ll learn a lot about the owner just by listening to how he describes it. I was at another event a few years back. By chance I was parked next to a young fellow who had a bright green Camaro with “lambo” doors which opened by pivoting up rather than out. Out of curiosity, I asked him about the doors and how long he had owned the car, which he obviously took a great deal of pride in. I’ll never forget his response. He said, in a quiet manner, that he and his wife had purchased a new Chevrolet van a few years before. Shortly thereafter, his wife was diagnosed with cancer and underwent treatment which ultimately did not stop the spread of the disease. When the end was near, she made him promise that he would sell the Chevrolet van when she was gone and get the car of his dreams. That car was the green Camaro that we were standing next to. That’s how powerful some of these stories can be. Enjoy your day and thank you for supporting the Virginia Festival of the Wheel and the UVA Cancer Center.

Keynote Guest Speakers Carter Meyers, Carter Myers Automotive History of the Automobile H. Carter Myers III, grandson of the founder, joined Carter Myers Automotive (CMA) in 1965, upon graduating from the University of Virginia's McIntire School of Commerce. He was elected President in 1974 and now serves as Executive Chairman. Carter III has been very active in the automotive industry, serving as President of the Virginia Automobile Dealers Association (VADA) in 1995 and as Chair of the National Automobile Dealers Association (NADA) in 2002. In 2010, Mr. Myers was named the Time Magazine Virginia Dealer of the Year. In 2016, he was honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award from the American International Automobile Dealers Association.

Automotive team in 2003. A graduate of the University of Virginia's McIntire School of Commerce, Liza's first role in the family company was purchasing a Volvo store in Charlottesville where Liza served as General Manager from 2004 to 2010. In October 2011, Liza was the 4th generation of her family to be named CMA President. She now serves as President and CEO for all CMA dealerships. Liza is the first 4th generation dealer to be on the board of the VADA. Carter Meyers, Ken Gross and Tom Cox Panel Discussion and Audience Questions The Virginia Festival of the Wheel is proud to have two esteemed authorities in the Classic and Collector Car World, Ken Gross and Tom Cox, join as special guests for the second Annual Festival of the Wheel. In addition to answering questions at the VIP Reception, each will be giving talks during Virginia Festival of the Wheel Concours. Ken Gross has had an amazing career in the automotive industry including having written 23 books, curating twelve highly acclaimed exhibitions of extraordinary automobiles in fine art museums including the Drive! exhibit at the Taubman Museum in Roanoke, VA. Ken was formerly the Executive Director of the Petersen Automotive Museum in Los Angeles, arguably the finest Automotive Museum in the country. Ken has been a Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance Chief Class judge for 29 years, is the Chief Judge of the Greenwich Concours d’Elegance, and has judged at Amelia Island, Boca Raton, Hilton Head, Elegance at Hershey and many other events. Ken has received the Automotive Hall of Fame Distinguished Service Citation, the Lorin Tryon Trophy at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance, the Ken Purdy award from the International Motor Press Association, the Lee Iacocca award, and the IAMA Lifetime Achievement Award. Tom Cox has had an extraordinary career both as President of President of National Optical/National Optometric Centers Headquartered in Roanoke, VA, as well as many key positions with Automotive Associations including co-founder and Board member of the Virginia Car Council Association, as board of directors member for the Virginia Museum of Transportation, co-founder of Star City Madness, and as an AACA Master Judge. Cox has served on Board of Directors of National Antique Automobile Club of America. National President of AACA (in 2014 and 2017), and served on Board of the AACA Museum. He serves on the Greenbrier Concours Steering committee, the Board of Directors Rolls Royce Foundation.

Glory of the Packard Packard has been named the featured marque of this year’s Virginia Festival of the Wheel to celebrate its legacy for excellence in the design and manufacture of Luxury Automobiles from 1899 to 1956.

ackard is the featured marque of this year’s Virginia Festival of the Wheel to celebrate its legacy for excellence in the design and manufacture of Luxury Automobiles from 1899 to 1956. At one time in this country, a man of means had to have one of the “three P’s”—Peerless, Pierce Arrow or Packard. Quality built by hand, backed by an extensive and professional dealer or organization and styled to reflect the taste of an affluent upper class America, these glorious Marques were the envy of the world. Sadly, the world wide depression of the 1930s spelled the end of Peerless in 1931 and Pierce Arrow in 1938. The Packard Motor Car Company of Detroit, Michigan was founded in 1899 and built luxurious and innovative automobiles there for 57 years. During the company’s heyday from the late 1920s through the 1930s Packard was the number one designer and producer of luxury automobiles in the US. The company was also a major exporter of automobiles with sales in 61 countries. During the Depression, Packard introduced medium priced cars which retained many of the features of the earlier models, but were built in a more modern mass production factory which allowed them to be sold at prices competitive with other manufacturers. Without addressing the medium price market, Packard would likely not have survived the Great Depression.

During the war years, Packard moved to 100% military production, building the famous “Merlin” airplane engines under license from Rolls Royce. Packard built over 55,000 combat engines during the war. After World War II, Packard continued to build both medium priced and luxury automobiles. Efforts to move toward the higher priced cars to complete with Cadillac made it difficult to remain profitable and the last Packards were produced in 1956. The Old Dominion Packard Club was founded in 1958 for the historical preservation of Packard motor cars. The idea sprang from the mind of Herb Hulvey of Fort Defiance, VA. Postcards were sent to all known Virginia owners of Packard motor cars, proposing the establishment of a club devoted to the Packard marque, since it was clear that Packards would no longer be built. The club, which now has around 136 members, holds 2 official events per year, a Spring Tour and a Fall Tour, which includes a tour and judging event. Members are encouraged to participate in the driving tours for the enjoyment of the classic automobiles and to show the motoring public that Packards are still plying the roads. Packard ownership is not a requirement for club membership, but most members own one or more Packard models representing the years 1917 to 1958. CAR CATEGORY DEFINITIONS

The following vehicle classes for the Virginia Festival of the Wheel 2019 best represent the vehicles widely collected by discerning owners. These fine machines appeal to car enthusiasts as well as attendees who appreciate the history, the artistry and preservation of the automobile. There can be a wide variation between vehicles within each class, but they all possess certain basic characteristics.

THE AMERICAN HOT ROD

Old school hot rods with steel bodies, period correct engines, and authentic 1950s design and construction.

THE BRASS ERA CAR

Cars that evolved from the Horseless Carriage of 1900 to the elegant cars that featured brass lights and trim of the mid 1920s before the advent of mass-produced cars built on an assembly line.

THE BRITISH SPORTS CAR

Cars that were built in Great Britain, and were normally two-passenger vehicles which were agile and quick, as well as focused on performance. These two seater sports cars were often used in road races between 1950 to the present.

THE CADILLAC

Vehicles produced by the leading luxury car manufacturer Cadillac from 1947 to 1967. They are characteristic of the Harley Earl era of futuristic automotive design at General Motors.

The Packard Motor Car Company of Detroit, Michigan was founded in 1899 and built luxurious and innovative automobiles there for 57 years. During the companyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s heyday from the late 1920s through the 1930s Packard was the number one designer and producer of luxury automobiles in the US.

Virginia International Raceway A World-Class Venue

ust a few hours down Rt. 29 in Alton, VA we are fortunate to have one of the finest road racing facilities in the entire country. The VIR—Virginia International Raceway—has come a long way from its humble beginnings. In the mid-50s, road racing quickly gained popularity with the influx of sporting automobiles from Europe, such as MG, Jaguar, Ferrari, Maserati and Alfa Romeo. New tracks sprouted up, including Watkins Glen, Bridgehampton and Elkhart Lake. The Sports Car Club of America (SCCA) was formed to sanction organized road races patterned after races in Europe. In 1955, a group of North Carolina car enthusiasts began their search for a site and found the perfect location on the Virginia-North Carolina state line. Virginia International Raceway (VIR) opened for business in August of 1957. Their first official event was an SCCA race which attracted drivers like Carroll Shelby, Bob Holbert, Augie Pabst, Don Yenko, Dr. Dick Thompson, and others, that would go on to become legends in the sport. The track became a favorite with drivers for its long straights, sweeping turns and elevation changes. Unfortunately, the track did not attract a sufficient spectator base so the original ownership group relinquished their lease in 1959. The lease was taken over by Colonel Paul Rembold and Henry Wallace, who were more successful in the operations through the 1960s attracting thousands of fans to its annual Gold Cup SCCA races, as well as motorcycle and karting events. The first ever IMSA race for professional racers was held at VIR in 1971, VIRGINIA FESTIVAL OF THE WHEEL 2019

and was won by Peter Gregg and Hurley Haywood in a Porsche 916 GT. Unfortunately, the track again fell on hard times after 1973 fuel crisis, and the track closed in 1974. The track was abandoned for 25 years, until investors Connie Nyholm and Harvey Siegal had the vision to bring the track to life. They left their careers in New York real estate to resurrect VIR in 1999. Reopening in 2000, the historic track was renovated to become a world-class road racing circuit, repaved and widened, but following the original center-line. VIR was transformed into America’s first “Motorsport Resort” which combined racing, lodging, dining and other recreational options. VIR is now the host of many major road racing events including the Micheline GT Challenge, the IMSA Weathertech Sports Car Championships, the Heacock Gold Cup Vintage races and, for the first time, the SCCA Run-offs. The historic track remains a favorite of the drivers for its challenging layout and is now one of the premier racing facilities in the United States. Connie Nyholm became the only female majority owner of a racetrack in the country when Harvey Siegel retired from ownership in 2013. Plan a trip to the VIR. The Golden Age of Drag Racing

he “Golden Age of Drag Racing” is widely regarded as the period from 1963 to 1973. During this period, drag strips sprouted up everywhere, and for a time drag racing was the largest participant sport in the country. The “King of the Sport” was the Top Fuel Dragster. Ground zero for Top Fuel drag racing was Southern California, where the aircraft manufacturing industry provided the skilled designers and craftsmen to build dragster chassis from chrome moly tubing, and formed aluminum bodies for front engine top fuel dragsters that would be the state of the art through the 1960s. Lawrence "Penny" Flammia from Richmond, VA had a burning desire to be a part of this innovation. He left Richmond and headed to Los Angeles, where he got a job working for Woody Gilmore welding dragster chassis for $2.50/hr. One of the benefits of his job was that he had a chance to meet many of the most successful Top Fuel drivers of the day, while at the same time honing his skills building dragsters. Penny returned to the East Coast in 1965. There were now a number of Top Fuel teams on the East Coast and Penny’s skills as a crew member were in high demand. He served on crews for some of the top East Coast teams, including Joe Jacono and Biddy Winward. His profession took him to drag strips all over the East Coast and the midwest from 1965 to 1971, competing in National events and match races against some of the top names in the sport. During this time, he got to know one VIRGINIA FESTIVAL OF THE WHEEL 2019

of his competitors, Jim Walther, a racer from Ohio who had a Woody Gilmore dragster and Ed Pink engine, who would go on to win the NHRA National Championship in 1972. By 1973, Fuel Funny Cars had become the big draw at most tracks, and the top fuel dragsters were now rear-engine cars, which were much safer but less popular with spectators. Penny made the decision then to settle down and make a career move to work on pipelines, which was more lucrative than traveling with drag racing teams. In 2007, Penny was fortunate to run into Jim Walther at an event in North Carolina. They decided to rebuild Jim Walther’s 1969 Fuel Dragster, known as Special Edition. Jim had sold the car to Walt Arfons, famed for his Green Monster jet cars back in the 1960s and 1970s. There wasn’t much left of the original car, so Penny fabricated many of the replacement parts and had Al Bergler from Detroit re-create the original Tom Hanna full body on the car. The car was completed in 2012 and was debuted at the 2013 Gator National Drag Races in Gainesville, FL. Penny Flammia may have been one of the best Top Fuel Crew Chiefs during Drag Racing’s Golden Era, but he never sought publicity or recognition of his accomplishments. His re-creation of the Special Edition Dragster is a testament of his skills and his passion for the King of the Sport, the Top Fuel Dragster.

Boar’s Head Resort’s Multi-Million Dollar Restoration

here was once a country inn in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. The Boar’s Head Inn in Charlottesville, VA, was established by John Rogan in the 1960s on land that is steeped in history. But a new era has begun. In recent years, the country inn has been transformed into Boar’s Head Resort—a AAA Four Diamond destination with the most up-todate facilities one would expect from a luxury hotel. The resort is situated on part of a 1734 land grant. It was also the site of a rustic inn, Terrell’s Ordinary. In 1959, John Rogan, a University of Virginia (UVA) graduate, with friend John Rhea, purchased 321 acres of this land and developed Boar’s Head Inn, using the image of a boar’s head that can be traced back to taverns in Shakespearean England. Rogan found an old grist mill on the nearby Hardware River and had it painstakingly dismantled and reconstructed to become the inn’s dining room, The Mill Room. The room’s massive hand-hewn beams were from pines harvested in Thomas Jefferson’s time—a fitting use of materials for a site with such a long and distinguished history. Rogan died in 1988 and the UVA Foundation acquired the property the following year. The Foundation also purchased the neighboring Birdwood estate, which was part of the land grant in 1967. The resort now encompasses nearly 600 acres and includes the Birdwood golf course. From 2000 to 2012, the Foundation made substantial improvements to the property including the addition of a spa and the Pavilion. The Pavilion has a large banquet room and a smaller executive boardroom; it can serve large groups for weddings and conferences. It is also equipped with areas for food preparation. 34

Although guest rooms were updated during this period, the inn itself had not been comprehensively updated since it was built in 1963. In 2018, the Foundation addressed this and launched a plan to reconfigure the entrance, the registration area and the Mill Room for better access and flow. The planned updates, designed by Johnson Studio at Cooper Carry of Atlanta, included a relocation of the main entrance and porte cochère. According to Russ Cronberg, Boar’s Head general manager, the new entrance opens into a completely reimagined lobby. “Our guests walk into a totally transformed area filled with natural elements, bookshelves adorned with historic reference materials and updated furnishings, making it a truly unique gathering place,” he said. Along with the lobby and entrance renovations, Johnson Studio transformed the Old Mill Room restaurant. According to Shawn Jernigan, director of food and beverage, this new space will be a carefully curated mixture of old and new. “History will still run deep in this space as we’ll have increased natural lighting that will illuminate the existing 1834 wood beams that provide a focal point for the room.” The design includes seating for 200 guests and upgrades to the porch room, with a private dining area and flexible banquet space for larger gatherings.
