As students, we work, recreate, and live our lives with a view to a time when we will be established with a career and a family. Fred Wenzel and Tom Deuer worked, recreated, and lived their lives with a view to a time when they would be established with a career and a family also. But their lives and dreams were suspended very quickly: Tom died in the middle of our Junior year, and Fred during the 1963 Summer.

Der Kuhpfad, the ordinary way, is often the most difficult. And Tom probably earned hi.s way by performing those tasks which sometimes seem routine, but are really heroic in God's sight. Trying to do well at one's studies, and attention to daily responsibilities are regarded highly in God's judgment of a person.

Perhaps Fred's 'task was to have his leg amputated (excluding him from the football he had played for a year, and loved very much), and then to have the guts to smile as he hobbled up and down Chaminade's stairs on his cane and wooden leg, always late for class, always smiling. Congratulations to you both from the Class of '64.
