Why did you choose the Upstate for your business?
Working with kids at Word Play allows for rewarding experiences to happen every day. Our caring therapists love watching the progress with their clients and their families. There is nothing like being in the room when a child takes a first step, utters a first word, or achieves a goal that was previously thought to be unattainable. Small miracles happen every day around here, and it never gets old!
Lisa and Amy were both born in South Carolina, so by settling in the Upstate, they returned to their roots. Lisa went to Clemson and eventually settled in Greenville. Amy attended UNC and moved to Greenville to start Word Play. They chose the Upstate because of its family-friendly environment. People come from all over to live in the Upstate, which has allowed us to build a strong, diverse team of therapists. The Upstate has been very good to us!

Lisa Baumhofer and Amy Reynolds are business partners and sisters. They were military brats and moved almost every two years. As such, Amy and Lisa were each other’s “always friend.” Their favorite activity growing up was playing school. Being the oldest, Lisa was almost always the teacher, and Amy was the eager-to-please student. It was early training for a job they would both love someday.
Word Play is a unique family-owned business with an established reputation of excellent play-based therapy with phenomenal therapists. We believe children learn best through play and that working hard can be lots of fun. Our therapists are masters-level, certified therapists who make the lives of the families we serve even brighter. We are always looking to add to our energetic team. We pride ourselves on quality therapy with proven results by the best therapists in the Upstate!
How did you get your start? Word Play has been in business for ten years. Prior to that, Lisa and Amy worked as Speech Pathologists in various settings including hospitals, homes, schools, and daycares. When we started Word Play, there weren’t many companies doing natural environment therapy where the therapist goes to the child to provide services. We found a niche, and Word Play grew into what it is today. Word Play’s primary mission remains the same: to improve the lives of our clients and their families through exceptional, unique, and fun therapy. 86
