Pedestrian bridge restores Onehunga’s precious coastal connection

In the 1970s the South Auckland suburb of Onehunga sadly lost its connection to the coast. The construction of State Highway 20 had irrevocably severed local access to Manukau Harbour. Decades later, Onehunga’s precious coastal connection is back.

PROJECT: Onehunga Foreshore Restoration, Auckland CONTRACTOR: Fulton Hogan (Civil North) L ocals now enjoy crossing an elegant pedestrian footbridge constructed by Fulton Hogan (Civil North) as part of Auckland Council’s Onehunga foreshore restoration project.

The bridge itself is the most visible part of the work, but it’s the more prosaic elements – some unseen – that really make the footbridge shine. Included in the recipe book was 2000 cubic metres of wall abutment, 501 square metres of precast cladding panels and 432 square metres of precast deck panels.

Throw into the mix a colossal steel truss, an inordinate amount of timber cladding and the late addition of anti-throw screens (useful in stopping objects from being tossed off the bridge) and you’re really looking at something special.

The ink on the contract had barely dried when Fulton Hogan (Civil North) began work. This was truly a team effort, with the firm working alongside subcontractors, suppliers and partners, including Tonkin & Taylor and design partners URS and Isthmus Group.
