Letter to the Students
April 15, 2024
Dear Students:
Congratulations on your oustanding achievement in reaching the national finals of the We the People: The Citizen and the Constitution program! Your significant accomplishment of qualifying for this competition is the direct result of the many hours of individual study and teamwork you put in with your classmtes and teachers. Your superior performance is also a testatment to the commitment and support of your teachers and coaches. No matter your team’s placing, your accomplishments over the past few days are just the tip of the iceberg.
Through your hard work, preparation, and exploration of the depths of our American constitutional history, you have gained an incomparably deep understanding of the fundamental principles and values of our constitutional democracy and our system of government. We do not doubt that as you continue on in your studies and life paths, you will make a great impact on our government and in your communities, no matter your ultimate vocation in life. Your We the People experience will always be the foundation of who you are as a citizen and participatory member of society.
While not perfect, the experiment of the Constitution and the United States has remained viable and powerful. We hope that through this program, you have recognized your place as an active participant in the continuation of that experiment. You are the future of democracy and of our nation. This program is dedicated to you and your teachers.

2024 We the People Alumni Network Outstanding Young Alumni Award
Athena Claire Hanny
We the People class of 2015
Douglas S. Freeman High School (VA)
In the words of her nominator, Martha S., “Athena has dedicated her career to public service, as her passion is uplifting the education system to support generations of students… and is always aiming to create environments where students have an equal and just opportunity to learn.” Following her time as a member of the We the People team at her high school, Athena attended the University of Virginia (UVA). She graduated with an undergraduate degree in Youth and Social Innovation from the School of Education and Human Development and a Masters degree in Public Policy from the Frank Batten School of Leadership and Public Policy. From there, Athena served in the UVA’s President's Office, growing her communication skills and learning how to foster improved higher education in Virginia. She went on to work at an architectural firm focused on transforming educational buildings, ensuring school designs promote the best, healthiest learning environments for students, and enhancing the overall well-being of students and educators. Currently, Athena works for Mayor Levar Stoney in Richmond, Virginia, focusing further on public education and juvenile justice. Recently, Athena published a report with the Mayor’s office providing an overview of the multitude of steps being taken in the City of Richmond to reduce and prevent gun violence and injury among youth in Richmond.

Sambo (Bo) Dul
We the People class of 2001
Corona del Sol High School (AZ)
Sambo (Bo) Dul, was a member of her high school’s 2000-2001 We the People State Championship team, which placed in the top ten teams at the National Finals. Ms. Dul’s We the People teacher and team coach, Timothy Smith, shared, “Bo provided leadership and was an integral part of the success of our team. She proved to be an informed and passionate orator.” Ms. Dul and her family resettled in Phoenix, Arizona, as refugees from Cambodia in 1988. English was her second language, and she excelled as a student, according to Mr. Smith. She attended college at Arizona State University and graduated summa cum laude with three degrees. She then earned her law degree from New York University and a Master's in Public Affairs from Princeton University. After practicing law for two years in New York, she clerked for Chief Judge Theodore McKee in the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit. She then returned to Phoenix and joined Perkins Coie LLP, where she made partner in the Political Law Group. Additionally, Ms. Dul started the Phoenix Legal Action Network (PLAN), a public-interest legal organization designed to help immigrant families in Phoenix. In January of 2019, Ms. Dul was appointed as State Elections Director by then-Arizona Secretary of State, Katie Hobbs. After Secretary Hobbs was elected Governor in November 2022, Ms. Dul became General Counsel in the Office of Governor Katie Hobbs.
