On The Couch With

Jalian Johnston

photo: pagliaro

I have spent a fair amount of time with Jalian Johnston over the past couple months including a surf trip to Central Cali. He’s not your typical surfer. The guy is consistantly thinking outside the box and is always making me laugh. He lives a happy life, doing what HE wants to do at his own pace. He’s a quiet guy vocally but says a lot with his expressions. He is a bit of a throw-back, caveman type person. Seems like you could drop him off in the middle of the Austrailian desert with nothing and come back a month later to find that he has set up a small village. This is our first “On the Couch” feature. These features are a quick question and answer article shining a spotlight on some of our South Bay talent both in and out of the water. Who better to start this feature with than Jalian... Civic Couch (CC) Sponsors: Jalian Johnston (JJ) Fire Surfboards and Hurley (CC) What is your 9-5? : (JJ) Basically it is to surf, find waves and document my surfing. Aside from surfing I work on my clothing art (Jalian Stitching Endeavors), help friends in the garden and plan future surf trips! (CC) Travel, where have you gone and where is you favorite? : (JJ) I’ve been fortunate enough to have traveled a lot. Costa Rica, Panama, Nicaragua, Mexico, Indo, Africa, Peru, Samoa, Fiji, Japan, India.... and I’ve enjoyed every place for it’s unique perspective on life and culture.!!! As far as surf, it’s a tie between Mexico and Indo. (CC) What’s in your quiver? : (JJ) I just started riding Fire Surfboards. I mostly ride shortboards in the 5’10 range but will mess around with smaller fun shapes and swallow tails in the 5’5 - 5’9 range. I also have a few step-up boards that range from 6’1 to 6’6 and one 7’2 that I will ride if I need but that’s rare. (CC) Favorite post-surf grub? : (JJ) Some sort of GIANT burrito, either home_made or out somewhere. (CC) Motto to live by : (JJ) Today’s a gift, that is why it’s called the present. (CC) Favorite thing to do when the surf is flat? : (JJ) I love being on the water; kayaking, diving, sailing etc. I also enjoy gardening. (CC) What’s next for Jalian? : (JJ) More barrels, more trips, more experiences... maybe put out a film of it all!!!!

Former South High surfer Natalie Anzivino, last months women’s open winner, and last year’s overall series winner, won the women’s open division, again, on Saturday. Body Glove team rider Chandler Parr was second, followed by Mira Cosa team riders Jordan Wible, Rachel Tominaga and Sara Kohrogi. Tamara Lentz of Spyder Surf was sixth. Tominaga also won the junior girls (18 and under) division. For the groms, the highlight of the day may have been getting to meet Jamie O’Brien, second place finisher the past two years in the Volcom Pipe Pro, and fellow Body Glove teammates Alex Gray and Anthony Walsh. The groms also brought home swag from the Volcom sandal toss game organized by Jani Lange. Top finishers received what might be the heaviest trophies ever presented in a sport known for unusual trophies. Body Glove’s Billy Meistrell affixed brass plaques to old scuba tanks that he cut in half with a blow torch and filled with dirt, topped by succulents. The trophies were so heavy that micro grom winner

Finn Bertino asked O’Brien to accept the trophy on his behalf.
