Saint-Petersburg St. Vladimir’s Cathedral The baroque style church was built in 1769 to house the miracle-working icon of Vladimir Mother of God. The bell tower was erected a bit later in early neo-classical style. After the reopening at the beginning of the 1990s, the church is actively attended again.

The Lutheran St. Peter’s Church

The Roman-Catholic St. Catherine’s Church

The early classical style Roman-Catholic St. Catherine’s Church was built to the design of the architect Vallin de la Mothe in 1783. It can be recognised by its magnificent green dome. Tombs of several famous people, for example, the last king of Poland are placed here. In front of the church, right in Nevsky Prospekt, an open air souvenir market is situated. Temples of the world’s religions in Saint-Petersburg The Mosque Among new inhabitants of the city in the time of Peter the Great, there were the Muslim Tatars. In 1914, the mosque was built to the design of the architects N. Vasil’ev and A. Gogen. The building work was financed by Muslim Communities. The tops of the minarets are decorated with turquoise tiling.

The Buddhist Temple The most northern Buddhist temple of Europe was founded at the beginning of the 20th century.

The Dutch Church

The church was built to the design of the architect Aleksandr Bryullov in 1830. In the Soviet era, the church, constructed in neo-romanesque Style for the German community of St. Petersburg, was used as a swimming pool. Nowadays regular evangelistic services are held here. The Armenian Church The construction of the edifice, which was built in 1780, was funded by an Armenian merchant. The church, created in Clas-

Built in classical style to the design of the architect P. Jacot in 1836, the church served the European, mainly Dutch, communities for Christian services. The neighbouring buildings, to the west of the Fontanka River, were inhabited by Dutch families. Address: 20, Nevsky pr.

The Synagogue The St. Petersburg synagogue is the second largest jewish temple in the world. The building of the synagogue was constructed in Eastern moorish style on the orders of Emperor Alexander III in 1893. The Synagogue has been restored recently; the building has gained its original appearance.
