LEADER

Lars Persson – acting chair of the Sundsvall City Executive Board Ewa Lindstrand – chair of the Timrå Municipal Executive Board Sten-Ove Danielsson – chair of the Ånge Municipal Executive Board

welcome “THE MIGHTY WATERS OF THE LJUNGAN AND INDALSÄLVEN RIVERS”, “The most magnificent town in the world”, “The charming countryside of Medelpad”. These are just some of the superlatives the authors of the delightful 1907 tourist publication (shown here) used to describe “Sundsvall and its environs”. Of course, these descriptions are just as relevant today, even if these days the “environs” – in modern tourism style – have been dubbed Destination Sundsvall. The range of activities is also in a completely different league than that which was offered 106 years ago.    Destination Sundsvall is a wider concept in purely geographical terms now too, also covering the municipalities of Timrå and Ånge. We believe what we have to offer is hard to beat when it comes to the vast array of experiences, sights, accommodation and events for everyone who visits our region, whatever their age or whatever they want to do.    Choose to go west along the beautiful Ljungan river valley and you’ll reach Ånge – the place with the highest number of rock bands in Sweden – including big names such as Takida, Stiftelsen, Corroded and Kill! Kill! Pussycat! It’s also the geographical centre of Sweden. Head just 80 km to the east and you’ll find beautiful beaches where the river meets the sea in the Timrå delta area, also home to one of Sweden’s best-maintained golf courses. Ten minutes to the south, in Sundsvall, is where the city action is, with Sweden’s first international casino, slalom slopes in the centre of town, the greatest shopping imaginable at Birsta and in what we call “Stenstan”, literally “stone town”,the northernmost authentic continental-style city centre in Europe.

Some of the tourist destinations have accessibility symbols. If there is no symbol, it doesn’t necessarily mean it is not accessible to people with disabilities. You should check with the destination itself to see whether your needs will be met.

The aim of this tourist magazine is to help and inspire you to get the most – and the best – out of your visit to our region. We have consciously chosen not to swamp you with offers and advice in the magazine itself, instead presenting an exciting selection of everything there is to see, do and experience in this part of Sweden.    Find out how the visit of the King of Siam (now Thailand), King Chulalongkorn, to our region in 1897 resulted in the biggest Thai festival in the Nordic countries. It fits in well with all the other major events such as the Street Festival, often said to be the best in Sweden, and the Concert Festival, which in recent years has seen guest stars including Rod Stewart and the Eagles performing unique concerts in Sweden.    You can also read how Stanley Cup winner and hockey legend Fredrik Modin rates our fantastic, varied golf courses and we’ll also be giving you some tips for a romantic weekend featuring a country house dinner and a hamam. The Himlabadet water park, rooftop guided tours, wilderness adventures, drag racing and world-class salmon fishing are a few other phenomena we’ll be highlighting in this magazine. Naturally we’ll make sure we steer you towards websites and portals where you can see the full range of activities and events on offer, complete with package rates and offers in every area.    We’re very proud of everything our three municipalities have to offer you as a visitor and we’re confident that your stay here will live up to and even exceed the high expectations you’ll have of us after reading our tourist magazine. All that remains is to wish you a very warm welcome to Destination Sundsvall.

ADVENTURE CALLS Active families gear up for top speed. Get into top gear and put your foot down.

Wilderness day for children Being out in the wilderness, discovering all sorts of exciting things creates memories that last a lifetime. And the best thing about it is that it couldn’t be easier. At least not when Lotstornet Åstön is running things, in a programme of activities geared towards children and families. Spend the night in a military tent that sleeps 20, out on the beautiful island of Åstö, a nature reserve. Paddle rubber dinghies used by the coastal rangers, go fishing, relax in a hot tub, enter a triathlon and round the thrilling day off by barbecuing sausages at the seaside. “There’s room for a whole school class in our tent. But it’s also open to families of all sizes who just want to get back to nature, simple style. There’s plenty of room out here,” says Lasse Berntzén, who runs the business with his wife Margareta.

Quests at Boda Borg BODA BORG is all about solving tricky puzzles in teams, making it the perfect way to have fun together. “We call a course with several challenges a quest. I often see families who’ve completed a quest. The children are happy and proud because they were the ones who came up with the solution,” says Katarina Ödmark, who runs Boda Borg. You don’t need any special skills to embark on a quest on one of the many routes with all the challenges you’ll face, but you can count on your physical prowess and logical thinking being put to the test.

New for this year are four additional courses. The quests involve solving puzzles having to do with sounds and pictures. “It’s about time we built in some slightly nerve-tingling challenges for the teams to complete,” says Katarina Ödmark. Visitors often sum up the experience as being just like a computer game, except it’s for real. Boda Borg also has youth hostel standard accommodation and a restaurant.

After a day packed with fun activities, there’s sure to be a lot to talk about. Who had the best lap time? Who stayed on the bucking bronco the longest? Who shot the biggest elk? Who’s looking at who? At the Aquarium at Himlabadet there’s no doubt about the acquatic interaction.

A wonderful water world

“A day at Himlabadet is a day with something for everyone. Toddlers love Otter and co., while bigger children and adults love the surf. We’re the first in Europe to have a surf machine. And most adults agree that the SPA and the Aufguss sauna are a retreat for a moment or two of R&R,” says Hasse Bergqvist. The SPA features different saunas, steam baths, hot and cold pools, experience showers and places to sit and relax. The outdoor pool area has a 50-metre pool, an intermediate pool and a splash pool for the little ones. All you need to do is turn up, get changed and jump in! > himlabadet.se

The first Surfstream surf machine in Europe. Surfstream is an artificial surf wave that gives the sensation of surfing on real waves. The speed of the water is adjusted to the level of expertise of the surfer. If you’re a skilled surfer, just select the high wave option. Several people can surf at the same time but you need to be at least 7 years old and 125 cm tall.

SUNDSVALL’S HIMLABADET being a sure-fire hit is as certain as swimming is fun. “We have lots of satisfied visitors, and more than 400,000 of them two years in a row just goes to show the water park’s popularity. We do our best to give visitors a day packed with wonderful splashes and happy sploshes,” says Hasse Bergqvist, arena manager at Himlabadet. Three water slides, Magic Eye, Black Hole and Turbo run from the tower and the lift makes them accessible for all bathers. The surf machine Surfstream is the latest attraction. For smaller children, there’s a separate section with pools, waterslides, a waterfall, a cave, play sculptures and a mini jacuzzi. There’s also our special mascot, Otter and friends.

See a clip of the surf machine on YouTube.

A WALK IN THE PARK Norra Berget is Sundsvall’s city park with animals, a viewing tower, walks, play parks, barbecue areas, cafés and restaurants. There’s always something fun going on. Wander through the area, exploring the history of Medelpad through the fascinating historical wooden cottages gathered here and the working mountain grazing farm. And if you’d rather not explore under your own steam, you can join one of our guided tours. Beginning in June, you can pet the animals

and meet the milkmaids as they go about their daily work. Handelsgården Vinfabriken, Norra Gaveln and Skvaderboden sell handicrafts and fine foods, The Crafts and Seafaring Museum is popular too. Getting peckish? Stop off for a light lunch or a coffee at Gullgården or waffles at Café Gesällen. If you can climb the 112 steps up to the top of the viewing tower, you’ll be rewarded with fantastic views over Sundsvall. > norraberget.se

QUESTION: What do you get if you cross a dolphin with a bird, a superhero and a jet ski? ANSWER: The fab new flyboard.

Camp Mid Adventure, 60 km west of Sundsvall, is attracting visitors this year with its latest innovation, the flyboard, which owner Dan Thornberg is delighted to have added to the activity mix. “Flyboard is at the cutting edge of extreme watersports. Find your balance with this water powered jet pack and you will be flying through the air like superman or swimming like a dolphin in no time,” he says.   But Camp Mid Adventure, geared towards private visitors, groups and companies, has much more to offer too, including:

Sport fishing doesn’t get much more adventurous than Bergeforsen. Just ask Mikael Skogh who tried fly fishing for the first time in 2010. After a 40-minute long fight, he pulled out a salmon weighing 22.7 kg. What a whopper!

BERGEFORSEN IS KNOWN for being packed with salmon trout and salmon, which is why fishermen from around the world gather here on the banks of the river. In the summer there are so many salmon in the water that trolling is banned as there’s a risk that the hooks would catch in the wrong way, harming the salmon. “The fishing in Bergeforsen is amazing. But I’d also want to tell people about the unique fishing in the huge Lögdö Vildmark wilderness area that isn’t far away either,” says Arne Perming, who is responsible for local fishing. You don’t need any special fishing skills. Everyone is welcome to come and have a go at catching big salmon trout in our waters.

A cozy Italian restaurant INVITO RISTORANTE ITALIANO is where Norrland meets Rome, Florence and Sicily. As you can probably guess, “invito” means “invite in” in Italian and Sundsvall locals long ago realised that the restaurant really means it. The atmosphere in the dining room and bar is welcoming and friendly. It you want to delve a little deeper into the Italian experience, the bar’s sommelier will guide you through the perfect wine and food

combinations. The restaurant also hosts whisky, cognac and grappa tastings, dinners for large groups, and company events in the new wine cellar. If you’re visiting Sundsvall you can expect a place that knows what it’s doing when it comes to the good things in life. If you’re a lover of fine wines and cocktails – Invito is popular among the world’s connoisseurs. > invitobar.se/sundsvall photo: kristofer lönnå

Interested in being wined and dined? If so, there’s something for you, whichever direction you’re heading.

In the middle OF NATURE IN THE MIDDLE OF SWEDEN IF YOU CUT SWEDEN out around its borders and stuck a nail through the middle, the piece you cut out would balance at a point called Flataklocken. It’s near the village of Munkbysjön in western Medelpad. In other words, this is the geographical centre of Sweden. Flataklocken enjoys a beautiful setting with a 10 km wide view over the beautiful landscape of the Ljungandalen valley. A restaurant, a café and a viewing tower are located on top of the mountain. A path, suitable for disabled visitors, runs to the café, which is open in the summer, and the fully licensed restaurant. For those who’d prefer to eat in the open air and have brought a picnic, there’s a barbecue area with a shelter. And if you want to find out more about the history of the geographical centre of Sweden, there’s plenty of information available. A survey was carried out in 1947, headed by Gustaf von Platen.

Lotstornet – a haven of peace and tranquillity Skatan is a true gem just south of Sundsvall. Since the early 20th century, this fishing village has been a popular tourist destination.

The coastal alternative to the E4 SOMETIMES LIFE PASSES us by a bit too fast. Consequently, the recent trend for travellers and tourists to want to slow down and see a bit more than the things nearest the motorway makes perfect sense. This is why the coastal road, Kustvägen, a tourist route in north-west Hälsingland and south-east Medelpad has become so popular. The 75 km long route passes genuine working fishing villages, the longest sandy beach in Norrland, restaurants, cafés, industrial heritage, golf courses, hotels, campsites, guest houses, summer shops, farm shops, a steam railway with handcars, animals, bridle paths and hiking trails, nature, fishing…

Yes, you get the idea. A bit different from the E4 in other words. Travellers on the coast road might sum up their journey like this: “I spent one night in a guest house in the archipelago with smoked fish for lunch. I spent another day sunbathing on a beach that stretched as far as the eye could see. I played golf and looked at industrial heritage and then I rounded it all off with a night out at the theatre.” Sometimes it’s worth taking it slow… > kustvagen.nu

The Nordic Chamber Orchestra has a worldwide reputation THE NORDIC CHAMBER ORCHESTRA is sure to hit the right note. In every respect. The Nordic Chamber Orchestra was founded in 1990 as the Sundsvall Chamber Orchestra, making it Sweden’s youngest professional chamber orchestra. Right from the start, the orchestra has specialised in performing newly written music. The orchestra regularly commissions and gives first performances of works by completely new composers and more familiar names in the Western musical tradition as well as in other genres such as jazz, folk and world music. Alongside its traditional work, the orchestra has run groundbreaking and highly successful initiatives for children and young people.

ARE YOU AND YOUR FAMILY in need of a place to escape to for a few days? Family, friends or colleagues, everyone can get away from it all at Lotstornet on the island of Åstö, outside Timrå. A pilot’s tower, Lotstornet was built in 1938 for the pilots who worked on the island until 1965. Today it provides over five floors of accommodation with a wood-fired sauna and a wilderness hot tub. In autumn and summer it is used as a mini conference centre. The tower includes a viewing platform from the roof, a bar and two floors of bedrooms. It’s the perfect spot for a small group of 1-8 people, where peace and quiet and real relaxation is what matters. There isn’t much to distract you. During the summer the tower is used as to accommodate guests. With views out towards Härnösand to the north and the island of Brämö south of Sundsvall, nature is impressively everpresent. Finds raised from shipwrecks are an everpresent reminder of the power of the sea. > lotstornet.com

From autumn 2011 to spring 2016, conductor Johannes Gustavsson and star violinist Gilles Apap will be sharing the role of artistic director and advisor to the orchestra. The fact that French musician Gilles Apap has been called ”the violinist of the 21st century” by such a legend in the field as Sir Yehudi Menuhin says a lot about the expertise of the Nordic Chamber Orchestra. > entresundsvall.nu

STENSTAN

The Phoenix, our symbol Many people consider Hirschska huset to be the most beautiful building in Stenstan. It was built in 1890–1891 to designs by Stockholm architect Johan Laurentz.

Few people know as much about Sundsvall’s Stenstan as author and historian Nils Johan Tjärnlund. Nor does anyone have a stronger emotional relationship with the unique heart of the city than this 34 year-old born in Selånger. Today, Nils Johan lives in Uppsala but naturally he has kept a home on Storgatan in Stenstan. It is here that several of his historical books are set, such as ”Staden som reste sig ur askan” (The town that rose from the ashes”) (2009), the popular guide to the architecture of Sundsvall’s stone inner city, and it is here he heads guided tours and gives talks on Sundsvall’s history.   The Stenstan (Stone Town) Visitor Center opens a new ultra-modern chapter in Stenstan’s history, its cultural heritage and the people who lived here.   Who better than Nils Johan Tjärnlund to write about this juxtaposition of old and new in Stenstan? Well… No one really! Off you go, Nils Johan.

The city is engulfed in flames

25 June 1888 was the date of the biggest fire that Sweden has ever seen. The flames engulfed almost the entire trading metropolis of Sundsvall. Five people died and more than 9,000 people were made homeless.   A new city soon arose out of the ashes in a transformation unparalleled in Sweden’s urban history. The wealthy wholesalers and timber magnates hired Sweden’s foremost architects and craftsmen, who turned a bourgeois dream world of palatial houses made of stone into reality.   The stone city “Stenstan” became a concentrated and modern urban core in continental style – a slice of Berlin or Vienna amid the pine forests of Norrland.   That was 125 years ago and the days of the timber magnates are dead and buried. But we can still see their view of the world and walk around the city of their dreams that they had built. Nowhere else in Sweden is such a complete and coherently designed environment from the late 19th century still preserved.   Start your own journey of discovery in the magnificent square, Stora torget. There you can see the statue of the city’s founder, King Gustav II Adolf, gazing out in the summer over the market

STENSTAN

stalls, outdoor restaurants and bustling crowds. The entire western side is taken up with the building that has been voted the most beautiful building in the city, Hirschska huset, built in 1890–1891 by property magnate Isaak Hirsch.   The southern end of the square is the site of the newly restored City Hall, whose façade has now regained its deep, lion-gold colour. The 12 impressive roof sculptures in zinc were the largest in Sweden of their type when they were created in 1890. They describe the changing history of the building as Sundsvall’s courthouse, police station and centre of political power. FROM CITY SCENE TO TOUCHSCREEN

A must for every visitor is Stenstans Visitor Center, which opened in 2012 in the former police station on the ground floor of the City Hall. The centre guides you through the architecture and history of Stenstan using the latest in interactive technology.

The Sundsvall fire of 25 June 1888 was the largest city fire Sweden has ever seen.

On digital tables and screens – like on a giant iPhone – you can click and drag the buildings, scrutinise architectural details and learn more about the events and personalities of the city’s past. Author Lars Ahlin, artist Sigrid Hjertén, songwriter Kai Gullmar, restaurateur Oscar Knaust and timber magnate Fredrik Bünsow are some of the historical Sundsvall personalities that are portrayed.   Stenstan Visitor Center shows videos on the Sundsvall fire, while the centre’s staff are qualified to answer questions about the city’s past. The Tourist Information Office, with its souvenir shop and Entré Sundsvall, which sells tickets to local events, are all integrated in the centre, making it a practical destination for visitors.   The new bistro in the glazed courtyard of the City Hall, the Orangery, is one of the new favourite spots of the locals. Lemon and olive trees lead thoughts to the Mediterranean and Renaissance Italy, from where the inspiration for much of Stenstaden’s architecture is drawn.   Traces of the former police station can still be seen in the rear courtyard of the City Hall. The prison cells, still intact to this day, have incarcerated wrongdoers from drunks to murderers. The atmospheric setting of the former jail is now a venue for events, including children’s parties and stag and hen nights.   On the next floor is the magnificent Stadshussalongen, an impressive state room used for concerts, banquets and celebrations. This is the home turf of the Nordic Chamber Orchestra during its performance season, an atmosphere reminiscent

STENSTAN

History and modern technology go hand in hand at Stenstan Visitor Center. Children explore the history of Sundsvall in the digital aquarium.

of Vienna’s famous New Year concert, albeit on a smaller scale. Stenstan Visitor Center is a meeting point to constantly return to, but the idea behind visiting it is to encourage people to get more out of the heart of the city. The beautiful buildings along Storgatan and Esplanaden are now home to flourishing cafés and restaurants and a wide range of small shops that you can’t find anywhere else. One of many delights – and a journey back in time – is Konditori Pallas on Strandgatan, whose 1950s interior is almost untouched. The café serves a wide range of delicious things to eat, including their speciality, “La Strada” cake. HOTELL KNAUST – SUNDSVALL’S MOST HISTORIC LANDMARK

The decorative staircases of Stenstan are a sight in their own right. Special guided tours of them are even arranged in the summer. Hotell Knaust’s magnificent stairway is even famous outside Sweden’s borders. Gorgeous wrought-iron banisters, twisted baroque columns and landings topped with cupolas decorated in gold with paintings of angels accompany the staircase’s winding journey from floor to floor. Royalty and celebrities have stayed in the hotel, which reopened in 2002 and now, once again, attracts guests from far and wide.   Storgatan and Esplanaden may have the most impressive architecture, but Sjögatan is also worth a look with its unbroken rows of ship owners’ houses and seafaring hotels, which remind us of Sundsvall’s role as a port. Opposite is the old warehouse for goods from the colonies, elegantly incorporated in the 1980s into the glazed and award-winning cultural centre Kulturmagasinet, where original works by world-famous Sundsvall artists such as Sigrid Hjertén and Bengt Lindström are on display. 12

Many activities are free of charge, such as relaxing in the sun on a bench in Vängåvan Park and watching the fountains play. The people of Sundsvall have been doing this since the 1880s. The park is surrounded by imposing bank buildings and is a symbol of the selfconfident city that grew out of the ruins after the fire in 1888. Sundsvall is a symbol of dreams and ambitions. It was described as ”the capital of Norrland” as early as the 1910s. Global awareness has fostered constant curiosity about new technology and the latest trends. Stenstan Visitor Center is a prime example of this, having become a trailblazer in seamlessly combining tradition and cultural heritage with development and progress. As a result, Sundsvall today can offer its visitors a unique urban experience. The precious stone city, the northernmost in Europe, becomes increasingly precious with every year that passes. Art expert Anders Åman in Umeå put it Nils Johan Tjärnlund particularly aptly: ”Seen through the eyes of the Historian, radio presenter, journalist, historic European city building tradition, Stenstan speaker and writer on history and is the last city in Europe if you come from the south popular science. or the first if you come from the north.” From whichever direction you come, welcome photo: camilla abrahamsson to Sundsvall and an inspiringly beautiful experience that isn’t easily forgotten!

How would you like to reach the historic heart of our city, Stenstan? From the rooftops, gliding along on a segway, on a fire engine, or through one of our beautiful leafy parks? It’s up to you.

Vängåvan: Nestling in the centre of Sundsvall’s Stenstan is this delightful park, its fountain dating from 1886. The look of the park has changed over the years but 10 years ago it underwent a major facelift, gaining more shrubs and flowerbeds.

Through Stenstan by Segway... Still on a roll! Glide along and experience the freedom of a vehicle that’s like nothing you’ve ever seen before. Throughout the summer we’re offering lunchtime tours, “have a go” tours with an instructor and advanced driving for people with a bit more experience. It all starts in Stora torget outside the City Hall.

Norrmalmsparken: The green spaces along the riverside have been given a new lease of life and the steps and lawns are now a great place to enjoy the summer sun. There’s a great fishing spot and a basketball pitch, too. And an island – Ågläntan – with a café and restaurant. Hedern/Stadshusparken: Stadshusparken, otherwise known as Hedern, is a park behind the City Hall. It is our foremost park for flowerbeds, with the Dialog fountain in the centre.

Hamnträdgården: The materials used in designing the park draw their inspiration from water and waves. It’s got large lawns, seats, flowerbeds, a play area, a square where people can meet and a chance to get close to the water and watch the boats.

...Or a fire engine The old Volvo fire engine from 1935 has become the symbol of tourism in Sundsvall. It majestically glides its way between the beautiful neo-Renaissance buildings constructed after the fire in 1888. On the fire engine tour, passengers get to hear about 20 unique and thought-provoking stories about life in Sundsvall.

Badhusparken: Runs alongside the river Selångersån from the Storbron bridge in the east to Mid Sweden University in the west and is a important walking route in the city. This is also where you’ll find the bronze sculpture “Seated wild boar” by Carl Frisendahl. Stadsparken Norra Berget: A nature park and open-air museum and the municipality’s biggest play area. There are lots of beautiful walks and excellent views over the city, especially from the viewing tower, 155 metres above sea level. Tivoliparken: The side of an amusement park in the 1870s, today it is a park on a steep south-facing slope offering fantastic views of the city and the entrance to the port. Its sheltered geography means that several not very hardy trees can be found here. Follow the signs through the park to learn more about Sweden’s deciduous trees. photo: bengt-olov eriksson

Green oases

Bünsowska Tjärn: A small idyllic park created in 1885 with water from Lake Sidsjön. This is where many of us go to eat lunch, feed the ducks or just enjoy the peace and quiet. In the centre of the park there is a pond surrounded by large willows. Esplanaden: Originally designed to stop fire spreading in 1888, this has now become one of Sundsvall’s most famous views with paths, a play area, flowerbeds and shrubs. Hedbergska Parken: In the spring, all the cherry trees are in flower. On its north side, the park is bordered by Hedbergska huset, one of the most famous and most beautiful buildings in Stenstaden. There are two works of art in the park.

Other green oases that we’re quite proud of include Skolparken from 1907, Åkroken with its variegated maple and Manchurian walnut trees, Östra Parken with its beautiful conifers and Fagerdalsparken with a waterfall and little bridges.

STENSTAN

That was the title of one of Kim Wilde’s biggest hits in the 80s. The view from the new E4 bridge over Sundsvallsfjärden will also be memorable, particularly when you look towards Stenstan. But they’ve got to finish it first! 2,109 metres long, with the working title “Double curve”, this is the biggest bridge construction project started in Europe this side of the millennium. When it’s finished, it will be the longest motorway bridge in Sweden. The bridge will undoubtedly be one of the most important landmarks and tourist destinations in Sundsvall. Construction is busily underway and this summer we’ll be able to see the 2,500 tonne bridge span being lifted. From spring 2013, the “Utsiktsplats Sundsvall” viewing spot will be accessible to visitors in the southern quay area, with a perfect view of the bridge construction, the port and Stenstan. The Swedish Transport Administration will have guides on the spot in the summer to provide plenty of information about this spectacular project. Naturally, maps and information on attractions and tourist destinations in Sundsvall are also available at the viewing point. “One new road – 1,000 new opportunities” is what the Swedish Transport Administration says about the project. We’ll be making sure that the viewing area points lots of them out. > trafikverket.se/e4sundsvall

MINIGUIDE shopping Shopping is one of Sundsvall’s trump cards. The range and the breadth are of the standard of a major city, and attract visitors from across Norrland.

Smart shopping transport buses between Stenstan – with its own unique shopping opportunities – and Norrland’s largest external shopping centre in Birsta run several times an hour. You can buy tickets at the city terminal, via SMS or by a credit/debit card on the bus. No cash is accepted on the bus.

Popular Stenstan There are more than 200 shops in Stenstan and even if Storgatan provides quite enough for one or two days of shopping, there’s one thing worth pointing out – the side streets! There are lots of little shops there well worth a detour. On Storgatan the In gallery offers three shopping areas, seven days a

week, under the same roof. Norrland’s largest city mall, In runs from Stora Torget to Olof Palmes Torg and contains many popular shops and brands in fashion, interior design, beauty and sport. > www.stenstan.se > www.insundsvall.se

Seven kilometres north of Sundsvall, Birsta shopping centre spans both sides of the E4. The entire area has 150 shops with generous opening hours, and includes IKEA and Birsta City, which has 95 concept stores under one roof. These are surrounded by a number of other concept stores and DIY stores. It’s got everything for families, leisure and the home. Parking at Birsta is free. True shopping professionals also know that you need to top off your energy levels to be able to

keep up the pace. You’ll find the widest range of food and snacks at the Birsta City food court. IKEA’s restaurant is another good option. Birsta City often hosts top artists and popular dance bands to add an extra boost to the shopping experience. ACTIVITIES

WHAT SHALL WE DO?

Guess what Olav the Norwegian Viking has in common with playing children, 800 skateboarders and trolling fishermen. Well they’re all just some of the wide range of activities Sundsvall has to offer. Let’s sniff out the rest. Climbing – Bouldering

Never dull at Drakborgen Drakborgen has one of the biggest climbing frames in Sweden, containing several different slides and climbing attractions, pedal cars, softball cannons, a ball fountain and a sports arena built into the second floor. Drive miniature Formula One cars and motorbikes or jump and leap. This is where it’s at! And after all that jumping around it’s time for great food in the restaurant.

The Sundsvall area has pretty much everything when it comes to climbing, especially bouldering, which involves climbing a boulder wall. We’ve got fantastic bouldering areas with a total of about 1,000 problems – or climbing wall options – within a 30-minute drive from the centre of Sundsvall. The best known is Bergafjärden, with about 350 problems and a huge range of difficulty. If you’re looking for traditional rock climbing, Brattberget is the best choice, but if sport climbing with bolts is more your thing, Midskogsberget and Nolbykullen will fit the bill. > sundsvallsklatterklubb.se > expedition-altitude.com

The word is out that we have a top class facility and that we allow three different sports,” says Monica Tjärnberg, who is in charge. > drakstaden.com

ACTIVITIES

St Olavsleden on the pilgrim trail and most people think of the pilgrim trail that attracts thousands and thousands of people who make the long journey through Spain. Say St Olavsleden and few know what you’re talking about. One of many people looking to change this is Putte Eby in Jämtland who is working as a project manager tasked with increasing interest in the St Olavsleden trail. “There are four major pilgrim routes in the world. Rome and Jerusalem have their own, and then there’s Santiago de Compostela. The fourth is St Olavsleden between Sundsvall and

Comment from a Danish pilgrim on the way to Trondheim: “Excellent recreation and just as much of an inner journey”.

Trondheim. The first three attract tourists in their thousands. But here no one has bothered telling a story that is just as exciting as the others,” he says. In early summer in 1030, the Norwegian Viking Olav Haraldsson landed where Sundsvall now stands after a number of years in exile in what is now Russia. His aim was to regain the throne of Norway and so create a united country. Because on his travels as a Viking Olav had encountered Christianity and also been baptised in Normandy in northern France, his aim was also to make Norway a Christian country. Here we could continue a story that could become a novel or a film. But a thousand years ago, Olav’s route led to Trondheim, and to him becoming Saint Olav and gaining thousands of followers who walked in his footsteps. In a very short space of time, Nidaros Cathedral in Trondheim became, rather unexpectedly, one of the most important pilgrimage destinations of the Catholic world. Entirely on a par with Jerusalem, Rome and Santiago de Compostela. “Today there is a great deal of interest in walking with a sense of meaning and purpose. For many people, walking on an ancient pilgrimage trail involves an internal journey of their own, and on the 3rd – 7th of September the trail will be reopened with a major walking event,” says Putte Eby.

One of the most popular meeting places in Sundsvall is the beautiful Kulturmagasinet, a venue for most of what’s going on and has been going on in Sundsvall’s past, present and future. Kulturmagasinet is four old harbour warehouses in Stenstan containing a library, the Sundsvalls Museum, a shop, a café, the Medelpad archives, a teaching and coaching centre, consumer information, energy and climate advice and plenty more. FESTIVAL

PARTY ALL SUMMER LONG Festival in the west, summer in Stenstan, music galore for everyone and the smell of fermented herring in the air. What are we waiting for?

Veronica Maggio was a hit at Sundsvalls Gatufest 2011. Gina Dirawi, originally from Sundsvall, gave the speech on Sweden’s National Day in 2012.

One of Eric Saade’s first performances after his Eurovision win.

Welcome to Sweden’s biggest National Day celebrations Yes, it might sound daft when you think about Skansen in Stockholm and all the events in Dalarna, but our sources tell us that it’s Sundsvall that has the biggest single celebration on Sweden’s national day, 6 June. The audience record was broken in 2012 when Stora torget was filled with 26,000 people! Kjell Lönnå pulled this vast sea of people together, Gina Dirawi gave a speech and entertainment was provided by Ulrik Munther. In 2013, the National Day celebrations will focus on children. You can be sure that it will be just as packed with partying people this year, too. If not even more so!

SUNDSVALL Street Festival 3-6 July “It’s about happiness, love and summer memories.” Anna Frisk, MD Sundsvalls Gatufest

As Sundsvall launches its 26th street festival, Sundsvalls Gatufest, there are plenty of new things in the cards for visitors. “We’re going back to our roots and producing a festival in a smaller space, a bit like it was at the beginning,” says MD Anna Frisk, indicating perhaps that in recent years the concept has become slightly splintered and impersonal. This year they are seizing on the phrase “It’s a true love story”, which ties in with all the wonderful moments and experiences visitors have had at the

festival over the past quarter of a century. “Everyone has their own memories, and we’re making the most of them. Our visitors this year will feel that the atmosphere has been heightened and it all feels that little bit more intimate,” muses Anna Frisk. The event is the largest of its kind in Sweden. Summer 2013 will see Ulf Lundell, Petra Marklund, Magnus Uggla, Style of Eye and Icona Pop take the stage. For further information and to buy a festival pass: > entresundsvall.nu > gatufesten.se

The building that was once home to the Röda Kvarn cinema is now a completely different kind of dream factory. Relax in the peaceful welcome of the Orient. The scent of essential oils with rose, bitter almonds and lemon relaxes tense shoulders and smooths the wrinkles in your forehead the minute you step through the door, wafted away to oriental Istanbul. This is the place where really busy people can calm down and recharge.

“Body and soul go together and we work on the whole, the senses. Relaxing in the heart of a hamam lowers your guard and makes it easier to deal with your own thoughts,” says owner Susanne Marklund, the woman who introduced spa culture to the people of Sundsvall. Spa Maskrosen offers a comprehensive range of treatments including steam baths, Japanese washing, hamam bath, massage, body treatments and facials and more. Or allow new ideas to emerge in a business meeting in the exciting lounge with all the latest tech. > spamaskrosen.com

Step back in time on Åstö The island nature reserve of Åstö lies less than an hour from Sundsvall’s Stenstan by car and 25 kilometres from the centre of Timrå. This is the home of Idyllen, an inn that nestles among fishing huts and fishermen’s cottages 150 years old. The building dates back to 1849 and its past includes several decades as a rest home for exhausted housewives. Today it is not necessary to be either exhausted or a housewife to receive a warm welcome at Idyllen. The whole setting exudes the romance of the 19th century and the experience is further reinforced when you’re received by hostess Hjördis Brand in period costume. “I’ve tried to create an environment that I like myself,” Hjördis explains. If you put a lot of effort into the reception, personal service and the food, you shouldn’t cut corners on the setting. It all goes together. > varldshusetidyllen.se

At the top of the majestic Ljungan river valley, with the hustle and bustle of urban life a reasonable distance away, you’ll find Torpshammars Herrgård, an impressive reminder of bygone days. Since buying the property from SCA in 2006, hosts Peo Jönis and Jennie Särlefalk have transformed the old managing director’s villa into a luxurious hideaway for relaxing weekends, romantic dinners and inspiring conferences. The view of the blue ribbon of the river is magnificent and the authentic decor inside the manor house takes you back a hundred years in time. “The first time I stepped over the threshold, I said to Peo that the house has a good soul, and we have really tried to retain and reinforce that in our business,” says Jennie Särlefalk, hostess and sommelier. Leave the car at home. An hour by train from Östersund or Sundsvall, you hop off just 150 metres from the well-raked gravel paths of the manor house. Here there’s a newly built spa area with a steam sauna, jacuzzi and an amazing wine cellar. You can also go for a trip on the Ljungan river – maybe enjoying a brandy in the lounge – in the 150-year old steamer, “Ljungfrun”.

Thailand has come to Norrland and it’s here to stay!

photo: wasu watchardachaphong /shutterstock.com

116 years ago, Sundsvall

and southern Norrland received a visit that was as exotic as it was unexpected. The visitor was King Chulalongkorn of Siam, now Thailand, who was invited by King Oscar II to spend four days as a tourist in these latitudes. The visit made quite an impression. Following it, a magnificent Thai pavilion was constructed in honour of the king. It was the inspiration for an event which in the space of just a year has become the largest of its type in the Nordic countries – Sundsvall’s Thai Festival. “Basically, I just like organising parties, especially for Thai people who are amazingly friendly and laidback people to spend time with. And then this festival is important for diversity in Sundsvall, which has events for so many other target groups,” says Nicklas Norberg, founder and organiser of the Thai Festival. The Thai Festival was held in Sundsvall for the first time in 2012. The festival site was the beautiful urban and cultural park Norra Berget. The event was an immediate success, attracting more than 20,000 visitors, including the Thai ambassador. Besides modern and traditional dance and music, the

market itself is an attraction with its food, a beer tent, hairdressers, massage and stalls selling clothes, souvenirs, flowers, etc. The many Thai monks from different temples in northern Sweden are also appreciated participants in the festival and this year there are great hopes of attracting one of Thailand’s most famous artists. “Yes, the negotiations have come quite a long way,” says Nicklas, who is giving nothing away. This year, too, the festival is free for visitors and gets off the ground on 18-21 July, as always in conjunction with the birthday of the popular king. Nicklas has marketed the event among all Sweden’s Thai organisations and is also hoping for a contribution from the embassy after last year’s success, especially considering the fact that at least a fifth of the festival’s guests are from Thailand. “The aim is to become the biggest festival in Europe and we might achieve that, even this year,” concludes Nicklas who will soon be just as successful as Kung Chulalongkorn when it comes to attracting Thai people to southern Norrland.

Vikbron Vikbron is the longest wooden bridge of its type in Sweden. Its 133 metres of beautiful timber construction span the shining waters of the Ljungan river. The bridge is open to pedestrians and the beautiful setting makes it well worth a visit. Don’t miss lovers’ lane!

Merlo Slott Europe’s northernmost stately home – Merlo Slott – was built as the summer residence of the timber magnate Fredrik Bünsow in 1883–1885. The wellpreserved library is an experience in its own right. Bünsow created a successful timber business based in Timrå and today the building is home to the SCA archives. A challenging fourleafed clover... In just under an hour’s radius by car, there are four top-class golf courses in Destination Sundsvall and they vary a great deal in character. If you’re looking for the seaside, a physical fitness test, forest experiences or “just a walk in the park”, you’ve chosen the right place for a golfing holiday. Öjestrands Golfklubb An incredibly beautiful forest course by Lake Öjen, about 200 kilometres south of central Sundsvall. Öjestrand offers major challenges in terms of games and condition. Starting at the 18th hole and looking out over Lake Öjen and the beautiful landscape, it’s love at first sight. There is also a short-hole golf course. > ojestrandgc.se

Timrå Golfklubb Ever tried playing golf dressed as a frogman? Well on Norrland’s only seaside course, the water is in play on all 18 holes. The Indalsälven delta is a scenic experience in itself and the golf course sits beautifully in its surroundings. It’s clearly in the Swedish elite class and has won national awards for “Golf Course of the Year” and “Greenkeeper of the Year”. > www.timragk.se

Hussborgs Golfklubb (Ånge) Set in a beautiful location in the fertile valley of the Ljungan valley, 70 km west of Sundsvall. The surroundings, Hussborg manor and the agricultural landscape are hard to beat. The park/forest course has made a name for itself and you can feel the sense of history when you take a short cut through the cow meadow to hole 7. > hussborggk.se

Sundsvalls Golfklubb (Skottsund) Sweden’s northernmost pure park course. The first nine holes here were opened 60 years ago by Prince Bertil, making it the 40th club registered in Sweden. An incredibly well-maintained and historic course. > sundsvallsgolfklubb.se

Golf is played in many different ways. On little courses and big ones. On grass and artificial turf. Inside and out. More golf!

Play golf indoors in or out of season. Entrepreneur Pålle Börlin runs a golf simulator and is keen to attract anyone looking to practise their shots, chips, putting and so on. “We’ve invested in a 3D golf simulator and offer high-class facilities. We are geared towards private individuals and companies too. Everyone’s welcome,” he says. There is a large putting green and a ”swing studio” on site. “The swing is filmed and then you can analyse your shots really well. As a teaching tool I haven’t seen anything to beat it,” says Pålle enthusiastically.

Skön Golf, not far from Birsta, is a privately owned Pay & Play course with a driving range and a 12-hole golf course. In other words you don’t need a green card here. Seven holes are quite easy to play, with the remaining five on a

slightly more demanding loop. Skön can probably be categorised as a combined forest/meadow course which offers minigolf as well. > skongolf.se

Minigolf x 2 A round of minigolf is on offer in Skönsberg. They have a 36-hole, high quality, top competition standard felt course. > spelaminigolf.se

An 18-hole course in a beautiful outdoor setting can be found next to Folkets park, beside Sporthallen, Himlabadet and Äventyrslekparken. Here the rule is unlimited play per visit. > tonhallen.se/aktiviteter

Matfors-Ängom golf course Not everyone knows that the old industrial community of Matfors, a quarter of an hour west of Sundsvall, boasts its own golf course. A 9-hole course in the middle of the Ängom residential area,

well maintained in beautiful surroundings. It also has a Pay & Play course with an annual fee of only SEK 600/season. For the whole family! > matforsgolfbana.n.nu

Water, water everywhere. As if Selångersån, Sidsjön and the whole of the sea weren’t enough, there are plenty of waterbased activities in and around Sundsvall!

Tranviken on Alnö is probably the most popular swimming spot in the area. You see all the generations there.

long sandy beach. Restaurant, campsite and heated pools are nearby. Tranviken has a ramp on the sand that stretches from the restaurant right down to the water line. This makes it possible to roll into the water in a wheelchair or with a pushchair. There is also a barbecue area, changing rooms, showers and a sauna, a beach volleyball pitch and a boules pitch. Tranviken is Sundsvall’s hottest spot, whether you’re spotting “hotties” or perhaps want to be “spotted”.

Bergafjärden beach A few kilometres south of Sundsvall you find an 800 metre long, beautiful sandy beach on the seashore. The beach is very shallow and suitable for children. It is next to Bergafjärden campsite, which has a café, a shop, minigolf and a barbecue area. Tranviken The south of the island of Alnö boasts a number of beautiful beaches perfect for swimming, including this classic, beautiful,

Smackgrundet beach and naturist beach On the coastal delta of the Indalsälven River, where the river meets the sea you’ll find this beautiful natural beach, which also includes an area for naturist bathing. The area is a nature reserve, which means that camping is forbidden. The beach is a 20-minute walk from the car park. The whole area is adapted for disabled visitors, which means it is accessible for pushchairs and wheelchairs. Barbecuing is also permitted at special sites around the delta.

I really enjoy the water when I’m sitting in a boat on the way to Skatan. You can just stop off at a beach and then eat a delicious dinner at Skatan.

WATER

FLOAT RING fishing float ring fishing gives you the chance to experience the feeling of being as close to the fish as possible in small watercourses. A bellyboat, wader trousers, flippers and a lifejacket are the equipment you’ll need to keep yourself dry and warm. The catch mainly consists of trout, rainbow trout and pike. And you might get to cook your own fish over a campfire at the water’s edge. Recommended for groups of 3-10 people to ensure a top quality fishing experience close to nature.

Shooting the Ljungan rapids Grab the chance to try shooting the rapids between Viiforsen and Nolby, a run about 12 kilometres long. Paddle your way through six sets of rapids, classified level 1-2, on a trip that takes about 3 1/2 hours.

The trip is best suited for beginners canoeing in fast-flowing water and usually takes place in the evening, or by agreement. The season runs from the end of May until September. > ljungansforsranning.se

A delicious archipelago buffet is served and on some days a two-hour long lunch cruise is also on offer. Seine fishing – tonnes of tourist attractions in Bergeforsen Seine fishing is definitely one of the high points of the summer in Timrå and Bergeforsen. In the first week of August, ”the silver of the sea” is harvested – salmon and sea trout that have just left the Gulf of Bothnia to make their way up river. The tradition dates back to the 19th century and today thousands of expectant spectators gather on the shoreline as the salmon farm staff haul out their

breeding stock. Sometimes it takes about 100 fishermen to pull in a really big seine. Spectacular is an understatement and the biggest salmon ever hauled in weighed almost 30 kilos!   Read more about Allsta Fiskecamp, Bulldog flyfishing and lots more fishing adventures at: > www.fiskeisundsvall.se

FESTIVAL

VROOOOM! Everything to do with cars, fast driving and anything on wheels basically is welcome in engine-mad Sundsvall.

Karlsro Flyers meet “End of Summer Meet” the 23-24 of August is a car meet in Ljungaverk with about 170 cars and 1,500 visitors. The secret of its success lies in the combination of revving engines and foottapping rockabilly music. A market, beer tent, two nights of entertainment and car judging with prizes are permanent fixtures. > karlsroflyers.se

Classic Car Festival There’s also the Classic Lady, open only to female drivers in appropriate period costume. The cars need to be at least 30 years old but there’s no age limit for the participants! A market, a car meet and a rockabilly night are also all part and parcel of the weekend. > classiccarfestival.se

On the weekend of 13-14 July, the chrome will be extra shiny in Sundsvall. We have no doubt about it as that’s the date of this year’s Classic Car Festival. There will be a parade of 50 selected veteran cars cruising through Stenstan, so that’s plenty of “eye candy” for car lovers.

Full throttle in Njurunda! Nolbybanan – Njurunda MK’s own ground – has pretty much everything speed freaks could desire. Motocross, enduro, trail and snow scooters demand total control by the driver of the vehicle and here it’s speed, excitement and a huge boost of adrenaline that’s on offer for young and old alike. Nolbybanan has everything from Swedish championship contests to fun training activities for younger speed fans. The business is based on many years of organised training for children and young people, and exercise sessions for all ages and levels. Might it be something for you? THE CHALLENGE

The Sundsvall Classic is a challenge for everyone More and more of us are pushing ourselves through the Swedish Classic every year. Now, for the first time, we’re giving you the chance to complete the challenge all in one place, at your own pace and at a level that suits you. Welcome to the Sundsvall Classic! 2013 sees the launch of a really fantastic Norrland challenge, the Sundsvall Classic. Just like in the Swedish Classic, you need to complete all four events – cycling, swimming, running and skiing – within a 12-month period, and you choose which challenge you want to do first. What makes the Sundsvall classic stand out from the traditional version is that we don’t have any women’s or men’s classes. Instead you get to choose the challenge you want, whatever your age or sex. We’ve pinched the idea from the ski slopes and classified our events by colour according to difficulty – blue, red or black. The black course is equivalent to a men’s classic, the red a women’s classic and the blue is for children or easy exercise. The different colours and levels of severity mean the Sundsvall Classic is particularly well suited for fitness initiatives in workplaces. Challenge your colleagues or form a team and complete the races together. Each of you get to choose the colour that’s the right challenge for you. Whether you’ve never run a race before or are an elite sportsperson, the whole team gets a fun and stimulating exercise goal for the year.

“The group of us who set up the Sundsvall Classic include a group of girls from Sundsvall who have run the women’s 10 km and the Lidingöloppet race for many years. But a couple of years ago we felt we wanted a challenge that could stimulate us to work-out all year round” says Maria Åslin, aged 46. “We signed up for the women’s classic and had a really fun year with a lot of training, sweat and laughter. But it also meant a lot of long journeys and there were often problems finding accommodation. We got the idea that we ought to organise a classic in Sundsvall because we’ve got such amazing countryside and the transport links and the accommodation are first class too,” Maria continues. The beautiful landscape with its natural challenges is perfect for really good competitions. The cycle race has already been going for a couple of years and if you choose the black course, it’s seen as one of the toughest exercise loops in Sweden for cyclists, with a total increase in height of about 2,000 metres. “We’ve received a great deal of praise for our race, especially for the beautiful course and the food that is included in the start fee. Being able to sit down afterwards and talk through the race with the other cyclists is much appreciated,” says Fredrik Olsson, in charge of the cycling event. Whether you want to challenge your friends, your colleagues, your sewing circle or just yourself, the Sundsvall Classic is the perfect challenge. It’s a challenge that in one way or another will link up with the newly built bridge over Sundsvallsfjärden, Sweden’s longest motorway bridge. Register at: > visitsundsvall.se.

NATURE

back to nature The Sundsvall region is full of good things. Especially the great outdoors! Here are just some of the suggestions from the world of the “Skvader” for those of you who get your kicks from the great outdoors, whether it’s on horseback or on the water. Here even actors catch fish Actor Lennart Jäkhel, who grew up in Timrå and Sundsvall, is one of the many people who love the countryside here. “One of Sweden’s best fishing waters is the legendary Bergeforsen, where trout lurk behind the rocks of the wild, white-water rapids. I can’t personally boast of any huge catches but I’ve probably caught a few two-kilo trout down there,” he says. So, after making two films about The Hunters, perhaps it’s time he made one about The Fishermen… Grab your rods, adventure calls. You’ll find more about Bergeforsen on pages 7.

Destination Sundsvall offers extremely varied fishing in white water, rivers and sheltered sea coves.

Söråker: Thomas Bergman is a kayak enthusiast and rents out kayaks in Söråker. As he puts it: “I’ve been canoeing for six years and I hope more people will be able to discover this wonderful leisure activity. It’s very relaxing and meditative and you really do get to experience nature. Paddle your way along the coastline, through the delta, in Tynderösundet, on the rivers Indalsälven or Ljustorpsån, or in our network of lakes.” > kajakochfoto.com/kajakpaddling

Indalsälven: The Indalsälven canoe route takes you through one of the most beautiful river valleys in Sweden, from Långliden on the Jämtland border to Bergeforsen in Timrå. There are several huts for

a rest along the way, with picnic tables, campfires and dry toilets. The river is narrow as it winds its way down to Liden, where it widens into a lake-like course. After the river, there are a number of power stations and portage is necessary. One-day tours are recommended between Järkvissle and Liden, while a longer weekend trip can be taken along the whole route. Ljustorp: The river Ljustorpsån is a beautiful family-friendly canoeing route. The river flows gently through a varied forest and agricultural landscape. Depending on the water level there are a number of small exciting white-water sections. This is a twisty route, easy to paddle, running down to the Indalsälven delta and the sea. > www.logdokanot.se

Juniskär: Beautiful Juniskär offers kayak hire and guided tours. In the archipelago outside Juniskär it’s almost always possible to find calm water, even when it’s windy. On windless days, there’s fantastic paddling to be had in the bays, out and around the islands and on the open water where it’s “Finland next stop”. > temanatur.se

Riiby Gård’s Icelandic horses are the perfect way to explore the countryside in Bergeforsen. Ambling on horseback along sandy paths, gravel roads and through field and forest is a wonderful experience. You don’t need to be an expert rider either. There’s a horse for everyone and you’re always accompanied by an expert pony trek leader.

You can never get enough of a good story. So it’s always worth listening when someone wants to tell you the true story of how one Mr Dahlmark shot at the notorious Skvadern in Timrå. The Skvadern, as you may know, is the unofficial provincial animal of Medelpad, a cross between a hare and a capercaillie. No wonder you don’t see it very often. Food and drink are served at the Café Skvader Inn. Guided tours.

Lake Sidsjön brings NATURE into the heart of Sundsvall Three years in a row, Sundsvall has won a medal for being one of Sweden’s municipalities that best fosters outdoor recreation by the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency. In 2010 it won gold! The outdoor recreation area surrounding Lake Sidsjön plays a major part in this. Just a few kilometres from Stora torget in the centre of town, this idyllic area boasts walks around the lake, picnic areas, jetties adapted for people with disabilities, and first class fishing for those who like to see rainbow trout, char, perch or pike on the menu. Sidsjön has something for everyone in the family. Take a dip in Aborrviken, wander through the trees in the Arboretum, feed the ducks or enjoy a peaceful trip in a canoe.

CONFERENCES

CONFERENCES Choosing Sundsvall and the area around it for a conference is a reassuring choice. Its excellent rail and air links are good points in its favour but the friendly hosts and comfortable facilities are first class, too. 1. Östanskär Jakt och Konferens

If you’re keen on hunting and looking for the little extras, we’d highly recommend Östanskär Jakt och Konferens in Indal. It runs elk hunting and game hunting for groups and individuals. There is also a course to gain a hunting licence. With an outdoor spa, a wood-fired sauna with panoramic views, a steam sauna and an infrared sauna, there are plenty of opportunities to rest and relax after a successful day’s hunting. The centre is newly built on an old property in a genuine forest and agricultural building, beautifully located in the Indalsälven valley. It also hosts weddings, birthday parties, christenings, gourmet dinners, corporate kick-offs and tastings.

2. Hussborgs Herrgård

Staying at Hussborgs Herrgård with a group means everyone has the chance to choose the right accommodation for each individual as the facility offers various kinds. The 110 beds are divided between the manor house itself, the side annex with its hotel-standard accommodation, and houses and apartments, as well as cheaper accommodation in a youth hostel or cottages. The centre of the estate is the English Park, which with its many unusual trees provides a beautiful backdrop for the surrounding buildings. Hussborg has become an eldorado for golfers. The first tee is just 75 metres from the manor house verandah, an ideal meeting place during the summer. > hussborg.com

> ostanskar.se

3. Kolstabodarna Vildmark

Kolstabodarna is located in a beautiful area just 10 minutes from the centre of Sundsvall and has pretty much everything hunting enthusiasts could desire. There is a shooting range, game hunting, fishing and the chance to gain a hunting licence. A range of different kinds of hunting is on offer. One example is hunting with a dog, Finnish Spits or Norbotten Spits, that barks to indicate game up a tree. When hunting with this kind of dog, the aim is to keep to areas of natural and undisturbed forest. When the dog has found a bird, the hunter needs to move forward protected by the terrain without the bird discovering the hunter and taking flight. As well as shooting and hunting, there is a sauna and hot tub on the water’s edge and a conference room.

4 4. Södra Berget

Hotell Södra Berget is a top hotel in two senses of the word. It’s located at the very top of a hill, where the slalom slope starts, and it offers all the top experiences anyone could ask for. The conference hall covers an impressive 2,400 square metres and generally good conference opportunities make it possible to hold everything from a small meeting to a major congress. The hotel is known for its shows with top artists, its spa and bowling alley. There is also a big outdoor recreation area right outside the entrance. > sodraberget.se

5. Söråkers Herrgård

One of the many advantages of a conference at Söråkers Herrgård is that it is so centrally located. The manor house enjoys a strategic location between Sundsvall, Timrå and Härnösand, with Midlanda airport just a few kilometres away. In partnership with expert entrepreneurs, the manor house arranges activities such as fishing, golf, canoeing or health and fitness.
