Is the beauty and bounty of the world still a privilege reserved for the few? Shouldn't society come together to ensure that everyone gets a fair chance of having a good life?
Some cinematic works truly force us to pause and ponder. So, let's have a look at them
Shivi
It is imperative that cinema stands as a representation of life. Sometimes, it becomes much better than life actually is. Films provide a mirror into society's doings and offer scope for change. Society's evils include oppressing individuals and not offering them the space to grow.
Over time, directors have made sure that they provide the audience exposure to the lives of marginalised individuals who stand for their communities and the oppression that they face. While some works offer a solution, others provide an insight into the current conditions. Let's talk about five such works of art that are also critically acclaimed.
There is a reason why the Tillotama Shome-starrer tops the list. The film opens with the life of Ratna (portrayed by Shome), a maid who has been employed by Ashwin and his girlfriend Sabina. Amidst the privileged life of her employers, Ratna struggles to sustain her own. Through some awkward glances, it is seen that Ashwin eventually falls for Ratna. By taking love as the classic class-breaker, the director, Rohena Gera, questions the capitalist system created by society. What is most beautiful is Ashwin's treatment of Ratna. The relationship is neither forced, nor one-sided. He respects her like every being must be respected and pushes her to pursue her dreams. The film does not provide the audience with the answers to whether the relationship will reach its ultimate, presumed end — marriage. It changes the entire focus of the viewers by not letting them have that question in their minds and reimposes the idea that if love isn't yet, then it must eventually be enough.
The Indian film industry has been continuously obsessed with the unexplored lives of prostitutes. It is often questioned that the industry that is so focussed on glamorising the lives of women working in meagre conditions, what has it ever done to improve their condition. The answer often lies in a single word — nothing. The film, directed by Sudhir Mishra with Kareena Kapoor Khan as Chameli, is one of the initial takes on a modern prostitute. Khan flawlessly adds value to her character by allowing Aman Kapoor (Rahul Bose) into her life. Aman, who is undergoing a difficult time, easily gives into Chameli's advances. The narrative of the film becomes a medium of inner change for Aman, who seeks reflection and introspection in Chameli.
One of the most scandalous films of its time, Deepa Mehta's Fire shows an unacceptable lesbian relationship in an Indian household. The film is loosely based on Ismat Chughtai's 'Lihaaf'. It is one of the first mainstream Bollywood films to explicitly show homosexual relations. Not just social, it also violated religious sentiments as it used 'Radha' and 'Sita' as the names of the protagonists. In the weeks following its release, the film was called 'explosive', 'gutsy' and 'pathbreaking'.
to actors belonging to the lower castes in the industry rather than taking an upper-caste individual and presenting him as the saviour for all. The cinematic piece worked as a form of open dialogue and served as a topic of discussion in the mainstream discourse for much longer after its release.
The title of the film was based on a constitutional article that offers equality and condemns any discrimination based on caste. Even as the Ayushmann Khurrana starrer did not receive much acclaim from the critics and was often called an inappropriate representation of the marginalised community, the film was one of the first mainstream movies to talk about a much present but much more hushed topic in the Indian subcontinent, caste. Even the protagonist of the film, who is a renowned mainstream actor, was questioned for his position in the film. Critics suggested that director Anubhav Sinha could have given a chance
Films on marginalised communities cannot be closed without discussion of the cinematic works that offer an insight into the lives of the disabled. Our society still fails to accept the disabled with open arms and even worse, it still does not provide them with spaces that help them ease their pain. Starring Kalki Koechlin as a teenager with cerebral palsy, Margarita with a Straw is a film directed by Shonali Bose. The film talks further about her complex relationship with a blind girl. It deals with the challenging concepts of sexuality, inclusion, self-love and self-acceptance. The film was screened at the Toronto International Film Festival where it received a standing ovation.
It's time for Africa! One of the most exhilarating road trips in the world, the Garden Route in South Africa is the perfect stretch for wanderers of all kinds. With a new experience at every turn, this journey is full of surprises that will leave you yearning for more
Vidhi Arya
When we hear the word "Africa", we often get transported to a lush, green land that's full of flora and fauna. Dressed in whites and khakis, blending in the nature, we imagine being on a ride that will introduce us to the beasts of the jungle along with the little cuties that inhabit the land. But, did you know, there's so much more to it! Readers, welcome to South Africa. Posh cities, ghettos that awaken curiosities, hard-hitting history, pristine golden sand beaches, mountains, rivers, and wildlife you can never get enough of! If there's one place where you can immerse into all of this, it's South Africa. What can be better than exploring it all from the comfort of your car, driving down with breathtaking views? If you haven't guessed it yet, we're going down the Garden Route.
Stretching over 300 kilometres on the South Coast of the country, Garden Route is one of the most mesmerising road trips in the world. Whether you're seeking adventure or want to be a laid-back traveller, this journey has something for each wandering soul. As you pack your bags and begin driving through the route, the landscapes will change at every turn.
At one moment, you'll be surrounded by gigantic mountains and next, you will be around the ocean. At all stretches and turns, trust me, your heart will remain full. Oh, and how can we forget the adventure activities that will surely leave you gushing with adrenaline? So, are you ready to go down a road that will leave you with a lifetime of memories? Before we start, here are a few pointers you must know about: What's the currency: While the South African currency is Rand and you can carry the same, most resorts, restaurants, and tourist spots will be more than happy to take US Dollars and will easily accept credit cards.
What to pack: Since the Garden Route involves a lot of hiking, beaches, and trails, make sure you pack a good pair of sports shoes, waterproof
footwear, comfortable clothes, and a jacket. What's the best way to go around the Garden Route: You must drive down the route to soak in its beauty to the fullest. Since self-drive is popular here, you will easily get rental cars at airports and can return them to the same company at your endpoint. So, don't worry, you won't have to go to the starting point to return the rented vehicle. We drove down, halting each night at a new location. From personal experience, I recommend driving 10/10.
However, if you're not comfortable with
the idea of driving around a new country for over a week, you can take a bus. For instance, the Baz Bus is a great idea and it covers most of the places on the route. It's safe and you'll surely make a few pals on the way. How many days are needed for the Garden Route: Honestly, there is so much that this journey has to offer. I spent 10 days on this route and if I could go back in time, I would give myself at least 15 days. But, even if you have a week, you'll get a taste of most flavours here. Be sure to take good breaks, be well-rested before each new drive, and have a clear plan in mind.
Taking a flight into the South African land, we started our journey in the economic hub of the country: Johannesburg. Bustling with posh neighbourhoods at one end and ghettos at another, the vibe of this city is nothing less than eclectic. As we only had a day in Johannesburg, the aim was to cover as much as we humanly could. So, we decided to get on a HOHO bus (that's a Hop On-Hop Off bus). Starting our journey at the Melrose Arch, we had the opportunity to witness classy art museums. Full of both cultural references and coming-of-age works, the galleries here will awaken the hidden artist in you. Additionally, this street is lined with several abstract and cultural statues, making it the perfect spot for your photo ops. Next, we visited the much-revered
South Africa is known for its majestic wildlife
Apartheid Museum and you can only visit this place to come a step closer to understanding the ordeals of the slaves across the nation. With hard-hitting pictures, presentations, stories, and arts, the museum really makes you feel the pain of the colonisation deep within. That followed by a visit to the Nelson Mandela House makes you really appreciate each tiny step that led to a free Africa.
We had a flight to Port Elizabeth the next afternoon so we had some time on our hands. So, we decided to engage in the fun culture of the city with a visit to the Melville Street. It's a street with a number of cute, Pinterest-y cafés serving chilled beer and scrumptious meals. Making it an unmissable breakfast spot. And, if you turn out as lucky as we were, you can witness some ongoing fair or the other. It's a colourful affair where the locals come together exhibiting and selling home-made candles, soaps, skincare products, beaded jewellery, scarves, and so much more. Believe me, it's all so pretty, you wouldn't want to miss a stall!
From Johannesburg, we packed our bags and headed straight for Port Elizabeth, the 'Friendly City'. It is at this airport that
we rented our car and prepped ourselves for driving across the South African coasts for next eight days.
First spot: Of course, our first Airbnb. We dumped our bags, freshened up, sipped some coffee, and headed straight to the Sardinia Bay Beach. A serene paradise, this golden sand beach is just a
During the wildlife safari at the Kragga Kamma Game Park, spotting Africa's Big 5 – lion, leopard, elephant, rhinoceros, and African buffalo – was astonishing
few kilometres away from the city centre. After spending some time here, we drove along the ocean and reached the Cape Recife Lighthouse to wind up the day with a beautiful sunset in front and a chilled drink in our hand.
Starting our day soon after the break of dawn, we gulped some amazing fruit cream, eggs, and cheese and tomato sandwiches, prior bidding goodbye to our host. Now we had ahead of us nearly 230 kilometres before touching down at our BnB at Plettenberg Bay and a list of viewpoints to cover on the way. On the way to Plettenberg Bay, our first stop was the Kragga Kamma Game Park Honestly, I lost the count of the animals that we saw at the wildlife safari here. Right from Africa's Big 5: lion, leopard, elephant, rhinoceros, and African buffalo to many other amazing animals, such as giraffe, nyala, lechwe, bontebok, zebras, and so much more.
The Storms River Bridge is one of the first arch bridges in South Africa. At a height of 123 metres above the river, you'll be privy to breathtaking views
The best part: Kragga Kamma allows you to take a self-drive! They allow three-hour tours, and with their well-maintained roads and clear directions, you can easily go around spotting the vast fauna.
Next, after a refreshing trip to the Game Park, we went to the Tsitsikamma Wolf Sanctuary. It was my first time seeing wolves and my excitement was through the roof when I saw they look exactly like dogs. Big dogs that you should be scared of, but I swear, they were cute. The sanctuary is home to numerous abused wolves and a few wolf dogs.
Super-friendly and well-informed guides will take you around, introducing you to each wolf and their story. The experience and the stories truly left me wondering where is the humanity in the human race?
Wrapping that up, we left for our next stop: The Big Tree. Before you get to the location, you can make a pit stop at the Paul Sauer Bridge aka Storms River Bridge. They are literally nearly five kilometres apart. The Storms River Bridge was actually one
of the first arch bridges in South Africa. At a height of 123 metres above the river, it will give you some breathtaking views of the river and gorge. Then, the Big Tree.
You would be stunned to know that this yellowwood tree is one of the largest and oldest trees in the country. With a height of 120 feet, the 800-year-old tree will fill you with awe. Just imagine the test of time this big boy has passed and gracefully continues to do so!
From here, we got ready for one of the most revered stops at the Garden Route: The Storms River Suspension Bridge at the Tsitsikamma National Park. It's a fairly comfortable hike of two kilometres which shouldn't take you more than two hours to complete. However, if you are a photo junkie like me, then brace yourself for a longer journey.
The hike through the forests will offer you enchanting views: one minute you'll see the beautiful ocean, next you'll be standing in a cave, and at the end of it all, you will witness the suspension bridge over the river. If you have time, you can engage in many fun activities here, like kayaking or bungee jumping. With this tiring yet fulfilling walk, we ended our day and drove straight to our second BnB in Plettenberg Bay. After all, we were on the road all day, almost everyday.
Day 4: Knysna — elephants, gin, and beauty at every turn
Knysna, the jewel of the Garden Route, stole my heart the moment we arrived. Known for its lush forests and pristine beaches, this charming town felt like a dream come true. We started our day with some thrill at the Bloukrans Bridge. It is an arch bridge located near Nature's Valley. The bridge stands at a height of 216 metres
above the river and houses the highest bungee jump in the world from a bridge.
Would you give it a try or like us, you would rather prefer a walk at the edge of the bridge? From the bridge, we made our way to the real gem. Knysna Elephant Park, home to elephants that have been rescued and rehabilitated. Watching these majestic animals up close and feeding them fruits and vegetables was an unforgettable experience. Their gentle presence, combined with their immense size left me brimming with unmatched joy.
Next, we went to the Knysna Gin Distillery, where we got familiarised with the art of gin-making. Knysna Gin is an award-winning gin known for the vast variety of flavours. They have some really unique flavours such as honey, blueberry, ginger, plum, and to top it all, they release seasonal editions. It all comes packed in very cute bottles, so don't forget to grab one!
After our gin adventure, we reached Bollards Bay Beach, where we took a
moment to simply sit by the water. The soft sand under my feet, the breeze in my hair, and the sound of seagulls in the distance created a sense of pure tranquillity.
The last spot before heading to our third BnB was the Margaret's Viewpoint, which offered panoramic views that I had never seen before. From this vantage point, we could see the vast ocean, the never-ending coastline, and the hills that formed the backdrop. It was like a painting came to life.
Our journey continued with the next destination being the Redberry Farm, a charming farm with fields of strawberries and other fresh produce. Our time there was spent picking strawberries and exploring their products. You'll have a variety of products like jams, salad splash, parfaits, crackers, and much more. The jam, trust me, tastes like real strawberries!
From the Redberry Farm, we moved on to the Oudtshoorn Ostrich Farm, where we spent our time between the ostriches and emus. The long-necked creatures with curious eyes, were both comical and captivating. The farm is an informational extravaganza where you learn about ostrich farming as it is a significant part of local culture for generations.
Our next stop and the most awaited of all was the Southernmost Tip of Africa, where the waters of Indian and Atlantic Oceans unite, leaving behind a playful mix of colours, waves, and beauty! Standing at the edge of the continent, you get a feeling of being on the brink of something much larger than yourself. It reminded me that no matter how long or short a journey is, it's always a part of something grandeur.
Finally, we ended the day with a visit to the Klipgat Caves where the stone age men once resided. The hike here has an unparalleled view of the sea. Some of the caves here take you back in time, millions of years. We finally closed the day with a relaxing sleep at the fourth BnB of the trip.
Our final destination was Cape Town, and this city has a vibe of its own. We spent two days in the city centre, exploring its urban life and two days at Simon's Town, soaking in the beauty of the coasts.
While we were in the city centre, we hiked up the Table Mountain for stellar panoramic views of the city and the ocean. Next, was a visit to the colourful houses of Bo-Kaap. This city is a lovely mix of urban life and diversity. From buildings, streets, to food, the cultural beauty is omnipresent.
Apart from this, we also toured the Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden which houses over 7,000 species of plants. Also on the list was Two Oceans Aquarium to get a glimpse at the vast ocean life. Viewing over 300 species, such as starfish, sharks, jellyfish, eels, and corals among others, opens up your mind to the vastness of the ocean life; some of which is still secret.
Our two days stay at the city centre concluded with a visit to the V&A Waterfront
The oldest working harbour in the southern hemisphere is also home to a gigantic shopping centre and the Cape Wheel. After riding the Cape Wheel, we spent the evening shopping to our heart's content.
If you're wondering what you must pick while in South Africa, I'd suggest get yourself some spices, silk scarves, handmade beaded jewellery, wooden artifacts, and plenty of
lotions, bath salts, and body care. You get a lot of artisanal skincare and candles here that will make you want to pick up everything.
The final leg of our Garden Route journey took us to Simon's Town. It's a charming coastal town near Cape Town and is well-known for its naval history, serene beauty, and penguins. Simon's Town is home to one of the most iconic attractions in South Africa — Boulders Beach, inhabited by a colony of endangered African penguins. Watching them in their natural environment was an absolute delight and the actual highlight of the trip.
Later, we covered Groot Constantia. The oldest wine farm in South Africa boasts a variety of wines that have won over 100 awards in the past few years. A favourite amongst the celebrities, these wines are so good, you'll surely end up taking a few
bottles. Don't doubt anything and take a guided vinery tour for the best experience.
The journey concluded at the legendary Cape of Good Hope. With its dramatic cliffs, the hike to the top felt like a challenge, at least to me! However, the endless views of the Atlantic Ocean meeting the sky was totally worth it.
As I sit here reflecting on our extraordinary journey down the Garden Route, I am filled with nothing but gratitude. The landscapes we encountered, the wildlife we met, the people we connected with — all of these came together to create experiences that will be etched in my memory forever. South Africa's Garden Route is more than just a drive, it's a gorgeous way to learn from the past, connect with our planet, and embrace every turn in life's journey.
As the world embraces remote working, are you still trapped in the confines of your cubicle or have you been able to break free? When work comes with freedom, this is how fulfilling it gets…
Asmita Anand
Picture this: you're responding to emails from a cosy café in Lisbon or finalising a project as waves crash in the distance on a Bali beach. Imagine brainstorming ideas under the twinkling lights of a Tokyo skyline. This is the life of a digital nomad — an enticing blend of work and wanderlust that has captured the imagination of professionals around the globe. With remote work becoming increasingly mainstream,
the dream of combining a career with global exploration is more attainable than ever. Digital nomadism is not just about travelling while working, it's about crafting a lifestyle that prioritises freedom and flexibility. For me, it's the ultimate test of adaptability — a journey that pushes you to redefine productivity and creativity as you navigate unfamiliar cultures, time zones, and terrains. It's about breaking free from the monotony of a fixed routine and discovering how much more vibrant life can be when work isn't confined to a cubicle.
However, this lifestyle isn't without its challenges. The glamorous social media snapshots often mask the behind-the-scenes realities: finding reliable Wi-Fi in remote corners of the world, managing different time zones, and maintaining a sense of structure amid constant movement. Successful digital nomadism demands careful planning and a willingness to embrace dedication as well as unpredictability.
Choosing the right destination is a critical part of the puzzle. Locations such as Bali, Lisbon, and Chiang Mai have become popular hubs for nomads as they offer more than just scenic beauty. These cities are equipped with coworking spaces, strong Internet connectivity, and thriving communities of like-minded travellers. But it's not all about aesthetics.
Practicality plays a big role as dealing with different time zones can become a tricky dance when collaborating with colleagues
across the globe. Also, the cost of living in certain places can quickly eat into your travel budget if you're not mindful.
Another cornerstone of this lifestyle is setting up your mobile office. It goes without saying that your laptop is your lifeline, so invest in a reliable, travel-friendly model, along with noise-cancelling headphones and a portable charger. Cloud-based software ensures you can work seamlessly from anywhere, while applications like Google Workspace, Slack, and Zoom keep you connected. But tools are only half the story.
The real skill lies in creating a routine that works for you, whether that means early morning hours in a quiet café or late-night bursts of creativity in a bustling city. How you will manage to complete your task list and also enjoy the scenic views is something that requires careful deliberation.
What makes digital nomadism truly fulfilling is the freedom to design your days.
You're no longer tethered to a 9-to-5 desk job but instead have the opportunity to blend work and exploration. One day you might be taking calls from a beachfront hut, and the next, learning a new skill like surfing or salsa dancing during your downtime. This fluidity often leads to greater creativity and a deeper appreciation for both your career and the world around you.
It's not just about the places you visit, it's also about the people you meet. Digital nomadism introduces you to a global community of entrepreneurs, freelancers,
What makes digital nomadism truly fulfilling is the freedom to design your days. You're no longer tethered to a 9-to-5 desk job as you have the opportunity to blend work and exploration. However, how you complete the tasks and enjoy the vacation is something that requires careful deliberation
and remote workers, all carving out their own paths. These connections can inspire, challenge, and sometimes even lead to collaborative opportunities.
If being a digital nomad is your dream, many jobs allow you freedom of movement without being tied down to your seat. Creative fields such as writing, graphic designing, videography, photography, virtual assistant, and lifestyle coaching, among others can be explored if you want to become a digital nomad.
Owing to work-from-home provisions post the COVID-19 era, many mainstream jobs have also become remote. Thereby, allowing you to travel the world while earning a paycheque. IT jobs, online tutoring, and data analysis are a few on the list. And, if none of these fit the bill for you, you must be aware how travel blogging and vlogging are picking pace.
As people leave their full-time jobs and travel the world to make content for the Internet, passion becomes work. This is
truly one of the most effective ways of being a digital nomad. However, the challenges, as mentioned before, remain.
You'd be surprised to realise that the concept of being a digital nomad is not just gaining popularity among individuals. As remote working trends are gaining momentum, many countries are realising the benefits of having stays for digital nomads within the borders for long spans.
Enter, digital nomad visas. Yes, did you know that many countries offer these visas for remote workers? These visas allow people who are employed by foreign individuals and firms to stay and work for long durations. While each country has its own terms and conditions, the benefits are largely the same for all. As people come in and invest in stays, food, and tourism, countries benefit economically. Countries such as Brazil, Croatia, Estonia, Portugal, Italy, and Dubai are the top picks with the best visa conditions.
At its heart, being a digital nomad is about more than travelling. It's about living intentionally, taking your work and your passions wherever your heart leads. Of course, it's not without its hurdles — burnout, loneliness, and a lack of stability are common. However, the rewards often outweigh the challenges. For anyone dreaming of trading their desk for the open road, the journey isn't just about where you'll go but who you'll become along the way.
Luxury brands now have a bold, new avatar! Some launches are so off-beat, they leave us thinking whether it's an expression of creativity, a marketing genius, or plain lunacy
Luxury brands have a unique way of enchanting the world; owing to good quality materials, appealing designs, and impeccable artistry, their offerings often feel worth the hefty price tags. Look around and you'll spot people proudly wearing branded labels.
Sometimes, it's the quiet lavish appeal of these brands that gently sweeps you off your feet; other times, they're so in-your-face that you simply can't miss them.
Think infamous Juicy Couture tracksuits with bold butt labels, Moschino's signature bears, or T-shirts plastered with Burberry or Gucci logos. If you thought the craze for overtly branded clothes marked the end of luxurious poise, think again.
Believe me, there's so much more that it will leave you questioning your sanity. Still double-guessing? Let's unravel further.
For a very long time, we have all associated luxury brands with understated, logo-free designs that speak timelessness. However, these brands are now evolving and have taken their marketing tactics to the next level with the introduction of big logos and loud designs.
Even though luxury connoisseurs always consider bold logos to be tacky, labels continue to produce them in bulk. Wondered why? The answer is simple as clothes with prominent logos are walking advertisements. They help create instant recognition and brand recall value. As consumers walk around the streets in such apparel, they promote the brand to a wide audience, reinforcing its presence in the high-end market.
While establishing a brand's recall value is understandable, some of the current practices are beyond my comprehension. For instance, have you seen Balenciaga's recent products? Think: the tape bracelet or the towel skirt. Or maybe Louis Vuitton's sandwich bag? Or the new perfume for dogs by Dolce & Gabbana? If you have seen even one of these going viral online — for both appeal and absurdity — you must have been amused too, right?
Now, the question arises whether luxury taking the shape of absurdity is just a form of expression or a medium to go viral. As today's audience is eager to pick up on funny and atrocious things instantly, there's no better marketing stint than to launch a product that will immediately gather attention.
This surely creates eminent brand visibility and recall: yes, better than big bold logos. While, it's best to leave the real intent behind such products to the brands who are releasing them, it can be safely concluded that all publicity is good publicity indeed! All we can do is get amazed together.
and a zipped pocket inside. If you've been to India or live in India, you must have noticed the floors of buses and trains?
That's exactly what this bag reminded the web surfers of. Most social media users were in splits because of its design, others couldn't justify the price tag!
So, let's check out some of the luxury items that break conventional boundaries and take grandeur to a whole new realm. Here are five such items that left netizens scratching their heads.
Prada launched this men's tote in September 2024. This metallic leather tote has embossed checker plate motifs, achieved by hot stamping. Priced at US$ 3,247, this tote comes with twin top handles
Balenciaga released the Tape Bracelet as a part of its Fall/Winter 2024 Collection in March 2024. Priced at a whopping US$ 4,000, this bracelet will surely take you back to your dad's garage as it looks like a regular roll of clear tape. Only that it has the Balenciaga logo plastered all over it. I think it's perfect for DIY junkies who have some staggering amount in their bank accounts! The bracelet garnered a lot of popularity — not because of its unmissable beauty but because the Internet almost unanimously found it hilarious. Some were also appalled with its looks. Critics felt it was just another way of using poverty as entertainment.
Once upon a time, it was suggested that to judge a person's character, you must look at their shoes. But, what will these shoes suggest? Well, I am not too sure! These inflatable shoes were released in January 2024 as a part of Rick Owen's
Fall Collection. These were designed by a South African-Australian-Finnish-born designer, Straytukay. These futuristiclooking shoes, look like a huge balloon starting around the knees and going down to the feet. Priced at US$ 4,485, these are available in a variety of colours: black, red, green, and stone. These shoes are sure to add a lot of drama to your life. And, they might just save you from drowning in a pool!
Drawing its inspiration from the classic brown-paper sandwich bag, Louis Vuitton launched this bag. Priced at US$ 3,130, this cowhide leather bag was designed by LV's Men's Creative Director and famous musician, Pharrell Williams. As per the brand's official website, the bag comes with a zipped pocket and a double flat pocket inside. The launch of this Sandwich Bag had the Internet divided. While some appreciated how the brand elevated a simple old-school product into a luxury item, others were in disbelief. So, will you buy this for yourself to carry your lunch to work?
In August 2024, Dolce & Gabbana reminded us how much we need to pamper our dogs with this perfume. Enter perfume for dogs, Fefé. The fragrance was named after the label's co-founder Domenico Dolce's pet. With a starting price of US$ 108, this alcohol-free scented mist features notes of musk, sandalwood, and ylang-ylang. It's true that our dogs deserve all the love, pampering, and comfort in the world but I am not willing to shell out that amount for my pet, knowing that he'll surely jump in a puddle soon after. Are you?
While luxury fashion is omnipresent and gradually becoming the new norm, are these products truly "normal"? These launches stirred conversations and sparked debates globally as netizens expect much more poise and luxe from reputed fashion houses. Whether it's a clever marketing stunt or a genuine embrace of the new and bold, we are all entitled to our judgments.
From courtyards to elegance, every home reflects timeless stories, architectural wonders, and a soul — celebrating the unique bond between space and the ones who live in these residences

Often, people flaunt labels such as 'Wanderlust', 'Queen/ King of travel', 'Globetrotter', and 'Travel Junkie', among others on their social media profiles. The reality, however, is that we only sleep sound when the head hits the familiar pillow. We only feel perfectly ourselves in the comfort of our homes. That is because our homes have, within themselves, a little piece of our souls.
Endless memories, countless moments of joy, envy, grief, and euphoria is witnessed by the four familiar walls. All walls, made of brick and mortar, or wood and insulation, contain countless stories within them.
These little rooms emit the energy they get from the tenants that live in them. Some of that energy is also reflected by the architectural styles that they are built into. Every corner of the world has its unique architectural styles that portray its culture. Here are some of the most famous architectures across the world that have baffled modern architects owing to their distinctive layouts.
It is a reflection of the Hindu architectural skills in India. Large houses surrounded by gardens and a central courtyard surrounded by rooms is nothing short of mesmerising. The central courtyard allows natural light and ventilation, providing good air
circulation all year round. These beautiful homes are making a comeback with new vigour due to their visual appeal as well as functionality.
Victorian architecture
This form of architecture marks not the style but the era of Queen Victoria's rule over Great Britain. The reign spans over 60 years and is later seen as revival. The Victorian era was all about defining the grandeur through ornamental richness.
Rich gleaming golds paired with gems and expensive velvets make their presence known in this type of home decors. Victorian architecture bloomed in Britain and managed to influence internationally. They can be found in several North American countries, Australia, and New Zealand, even today as the remnants of the era bygone.
Modern architecture
Modern architecture dominated the architectural style of the 1930s through 1960s in Europe as well as the United States of America. It was the modernist movement defining the rapidly changing world. It marked the aesthetic as well as structural advancement across the globe.
Modern architecture can easily be defined as an analytical and functional approach to building a home. Open floor plans, flat roofs, and minimalist decor that
we all brag about are all a gift of the modern architecture movement.
Ranch style architecture
Patios and gazebos were the new introductions in the countryside homes under this trend. Single storey homes with dedicated open spaces meant for viewing and outdoor entertainment are what ranch style homes are all about. They redefine the open floor plan and offer a great fluidity of movement within homes. These homes are designed to weather all storms, small and big, and provide a nourishing space for generations to come.
Symmetry, proportion, elegance, and simplicity — these four words are enough to define the Greek style architecture, be it original or revival. Although grand would be another word for the original Greek architecture. The ancient civilisation may be treated as the era of no technology, but that never stopped the Grecians from building geometrically accurate and challenging architectures of vast proportions.
Greek revival architecture reflects on the 5th century temples and builds on the principles of highlighting its simplistic and elegant beauty in a more everyday approach.
It reflects a modern take on traditional

styles. Like all things Italian, it breathes passion into concrete with its unique style. It takes inspiration from the Mediterranean farmhouses to give it an all-American flair. Towers are a famous characteristic feature of the Italian architecture. They define the passionate and artistic side of the Italian designers in its ornate carvings and designs.
The Renaissance era (15th and 16th century) Tudor architecture truly brought the use of timber in highlight. Lavish can easily be a one-word definition of these houses. Ornate roof designs, large bay windows with beautiful curtains, and elaborate plaster ceilings with creative designs is what Tudor architecture is well known for. They also showcase rich wood panels and a touch of glamour with the ode to Renaissance ornamental motifs.
Turn the Tudor architecture in all black, paired with dark wood richness and touch of velvet, and you have the gothic architecture right there!
It can be safely concluded that every home whether small or grandiose has a unique story to tell. This story spans across generations and some are built to sustain centuries worth of generations. If walls could talk, the stories they would tell will pale all the literature in comparison.

Vidhi Arya
Every year, as the world flips the calendar to a new year, millions of people across the globe prepare to welcome vibrant celebrations and a wholesome new year. Shortly afterwards, there comes another mesmerising gala affair, rooted in centuries-old traditions:
The Lunar New Year
Unlike the Gregorian New Year, which is observed on January 1 every year, the Chinese New Year does not follow a fixed date. It is determined by the movement of the moon or the lunar calendar. Hence, the celebratory date changes every year but it always falls between late January to mid-February. The beauty of the Lunar Year lies in the fact that each year is associated with an animal and an element. The union of the two influence the energy and fortune that the year brings.
Naturally, it is not only a time to rejoice and celebrate, but also to reflect on our past doings and dwell in hopes for better times ahead. As cultures around the world prepare to welcome the Lunar New Year on January 29, 2025, The Year of the Wood Snake, this feature encompasses everything you need to know about the wood snake and what the year has in store for all.
The Chinese Zodiac: A dance of animals and elements
The Chinese zodiac system is a fascinating and unique one, it's nothing like the zodiacs that follow the Gregorian calendar. The Chinese system entails a 12-year cycle where each year is represented by an animal. These are: Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog, and Pig. All of these animals have their own traits and energies and how they influence a year is further influenced by the five-year cycles of elements: Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, and Water. Together, this dynamic pairing shapes the unique essence of every year.

The animal kingdom is full of wonders. Brimming with traits that never fail to surprise humans, each animal gives us something unique to learn from. Wondering how? Read along
Gauri D.
From mere apes to as we see ourselves today, our species has traversed a long journey of evolution, where we have learned, unlearned, and relearned a lot over millions and millions of years. All of this has shaped the way we live, think, and act today. Humans are the unique possessors of consciousness, empathy, creativity, and resilience – a species that communicates effectively and hence writes the sonnets of its own greatness.
We, homo sapiens, often deem ourselves the greatest of all species, although saying this would be a gross misappropriation. And, if we look around and carefully evaluate what we have done to this planet, it's even more wrong to say so. But, what if we spoke of mere capabilities and skills?
There are many other animal species which have great and rather intriguing abilities that make them a contender for the best species award. It is, however, a sad truth that these species are always in danger of human intervention because, despite all the creativity and consciousness, humans can be rather cruel and ignorant. For once, I think it's a good time to come out of the cocoon of greatness and look at the amazing traits that set the animal kingdom apart from humankind.
There have been cases in Australia where police found the fingerprints but never found the culprit. Such a perfect crime never seen before. Well, in their defence, they were looking for humans but the fingerprints in their records were of koalas! Koalas are known to have fingerprints very similar to that of humans, making them the perfect scapegoat. So, the next time
your mom finds your little fingerprints on a cookie jar, you know who to blame!
Sometimes humans must learn some empathy from the animals. They have a lot to teach us in terms of ideal behaviour. We may not give another look to the little squirrels around us, but they are known to adopt other squirrels' babies if they are abandoned for some reason.
The natural habitat of hippopotamus has scorching African Sun but who will protect their thick yet delicate skin from it? Well, hippos found their own solution. They simply make their own sunblock! These giant herbivorous mammals secrete a pinkish substance through their skin. This secretion acts as a natural Sun protection from the region's blistering heat.
vote for which way to travel. They are known to indicate their choice of direction by standing up and looking at the direction before lying back to their original position. How amazing is that?
Ancient Egyptians worshipped cats, and we must wonder if they had the right idea. Cats are the only members of the feline family who decided to be domesticated. For their own benefit. In fact, meow is not their language at all. They cunningly or perhaps smartly developed their cute sounds to seduce humans and attract their attention. Interestingly, cats can make over 100 different sounds.
How we have wondered about the superpowers and abilities through infinite superhero stories and movies. Reindeers showcase one of the coolest superpowers of them all. As the icy winds of winter approach, their eyeballs start to change colour from brown to blue for the season. This ability helps them adapt to changing climatic conditions and allows them a full range of visibility in low light.
Humans perhaps got the idea of reversing the car from hummingbirds. We use twists and turns to fit into our parking spots. Whereas, Hummingbirds can marvellously turn their wings and fly backwards at a fluttering astonishing speed. They are the only bird species to possess this special ability.
We are all creatures of material pleasure, aren't we? Well, so are otters. They have a membranous pocket that they use to store their beloved material possessions. What are they, you ask. Otters store their favourite rocks in these pockets. They use these special rocks to crack open molluscs. But they aren't simply materialist-minded. Otters are gentle creatures with hearts full of love. They are known to hold hands when falling asleep to stay close to their companions.
The Darling Cows with their busy moos have quite a social life. They are known to form close bonds with their kin. Cows can get easily stressed if they are separated from their companions. No wonder that these compassionate animals form close bonds.
The concept of feminism came to power fairly recently in the human world. African buffalo herds have been practising democracy and feminism since the dawn of time. In African buffalo herds, only females can
The cute cuddly penguins are as cute in nature as they are to look at. Most penguins are monogamous and love their partners dearly. Some males even propose to their partners by giving them a perfect pebble. Penguins are known to suffer from broken hearts when they lose their partner. Now, isn't that worth melting a human heart?
Pick a fight with a bull and that would be forgiven with time, but pick a fight with a crow and repent for life. Crows have a long memory and can read facial features rather well. So, if you are mean to them, they will make sure their grandkids know of you. They hold grudges bigger than the Grinch.
We all know that we, red-blooded humans, have one brain, one heart, one liver, two lungs, and two kidneys which help us function to our fullest. But the octopus is a proud owner of nine brains and three hearts and also has blue blood. They are known to squeeze from the tightest spaces that look impossible and are highly intelligent.
Let's not restrict ourselves to strictly animals, some birds might amaze us too!
It is safe to say that the ghosts stole the idea of turning their heads in a complete circle from the wise and noble owls. Owls are the only birds possessing this unique ability which helps them navigate their surroundings in the dead of the night with minimal movement. It's worth wondering if they are nature's true spy birds!

While travelling the world, people wish to experience its picturesque beauty. However, many take the road less travelled to satiate their curiosities with slum tourism. But is it reasonable?
Long ago, I heard the famous quote by director Tim Burton: "One person's craziness is another person's reality", and I briefly forgot about it. But while booking one of my travel packages, I came across a slum tour, and the quote came back and hit me in the face. True, the life we can only imagine to be a crazy, rough, or tough road is the one that someone is living every day. But how ethical and logical does it sound to encash on it — for entertainment? That's truly beyond me.
We humans have a way of finding different means to satiate our quest to know the unknown, to experience far-fetched realities, and to fulfil our undying thirst to feel more blessed than others — or maybe, superior. I believe all of this comes together
really well in a well-planned slum tour. No wonder this type of tourism's popularity across the globe is growing substantially. Travel agencies are rampantly pushing out tours to shanty towns to acquaint the blessed and wealthy with the poverty-laden
lives of the people there. At what cost, I ask? While some may argue it has its own benefits, it can't be denied that it comes with its issues. So, I decided to dig deeper. And here I am, presenting all that I have learned about this fad in this feature.
Read along and ask yourself: how good or problematic is this trend?
When we think of tourist destinations, we often swoon over pristine beaches, historical museums, pleasant mountains, or fascinating concrete jungles. However, the paradigm is shifting, and now slums across the globe are gaining popularity as tourist attractions. These zones, which are often considered filthy, unsafe, and no-go areas, are now brimming with tourists. Be it Dharavi in India, Soweto in South Africa, or Manila in the Philippines, the status quo remains the same.
Slum tourism entails organised tours to shanty towns, where a gazillion tents and temporary houses line the sides of railway tracks and rivers or are spread over a huge area visible from the posh city's airport, like Dharavi. These tours allow tourists a sneak peek into the lives of the dwellers in the area. By showcasing their daily living, struggles, and community life, these tours aim to sensitise the affluent to the lives of the less fortunate. With untreated sewage, undisposed trash, non-functional water pipes, bare minimum means of survival, and people with heavy hearts yet smiling faces, these tours often shine a light on the neglect that the marginalised experience at the hands of the government.
Apart from showcasing the regular ways of living, many slum tours attempt to show a silver lining. They take visitors to various upliftment projects in the area, be it schools, washrooms, orphanages, or upcoming waste treatment facilities. The idea is always to bring tourists to terms with reality and highlight what's being done to make it better.
Technically speaking, it is not a novel phenomenon and has been around for centuries. For instance, in the 19th century, upper-class people from London visited the East End to look at the poor. At that time, this practice was commonly called 'slumming'. The British then carried this practice to the other end of the world: New York and San Francisco.
Here, they would visit the ghettos and compare the poverty situation there to back home. As a matter of fact, looking at
the ethical connotation of this mockery, San Francisco banned the practice in 1909. However, this practice slowly spread from here on. A major boom came in when the world started to pay attention to the anti-apartheid movement in South Africa. That is when Soweto and Cape Town became hubs of slum tourism.
As of today, whether you call it a trip to a slum, a favela, a barrio, or a ghetto, this form of tourism is peaking, in all its glory, all across the globe.
This form of tourism has been under the moral lens for a long time. While some may argue that these tours help us come in touch with the reality of many, others are not too sure if this is the right way to do so.
Even though this has been a debatable topic, its popularity continues to rise, despite the constant backlash. So, let's
delve deeper to understand the two sides of this coin.
While the discomfort and ethical dilemma around slum tourism are undeniable, many argue that it is sure to uplift society and its benefits can't be ignored. Advocates for slum tourism suggest that it provides an excellent opportunity to spread awareness. More often than not, for many people, these tours are the first exposure to the stark realities of poverty.
The visceral experience of walking through narrow, overcrowded lanes and seeing the sheer resilience of slum dwellers has the potential to ignite a sense of empathy and a desire to help. These advocates also suggest that understanding the hardships that the dwellers face on a daily basis can encourage meaningful actions, such as donations, volunteering, or supporting policy changes.
The supporters of slum tourism also say
that these tours form a part of livelihood for many dwellers. Local guides to these tours often hail from these communities. They earn a living by showing visitors around and sharing their life stories. Many tour organisers also direct a part of the fee towards the development and upliftment of the communities. They do so by either providing money or by providing resources for education, sanitation, and healthcare facilities.
Lastly, many people also believe that these slum tours shine a light on the fact that these places are more than just poverty-laden communities. For instance, walking down the streets of Dharavi will tell you that it's not merely a slum but a huge market for leather. Many families here produce leather products that are sold in the
market. Also, these tours help us realise the value of community living and togetherness in times of stress.
On the other hand, could you imagine a group of people walking by your house, gawking at what you're doing and how you do it within your means? Can you imagine random strangers trying to talk to you every second day to understand your lifestyle and your struggles? Does it sound invasive to you? Would it not feel invasive to them? It's something we all need to ponder about; only after we keep our crown of privileges aside.
Critics often argue against slum tourism due to the fact that it exploits the misery of the underprivileged for the amusement of the affluent, in turn reinforcing stereotypes. As many across the globe are trying hard to
fight the root cause of poverty, slum tourism risks turning human suffering into a spectacle. That's not entirely wrong. Afterall, the power dynamics between tourists and locals is extremely unequal and it just ends up exacerbating the issue. While tourists might see the slum dwellers as subjects of curiosity or sources of inspiration, the locals may feel objectified, as though their struggles are being commodified for someone else's gain.
Moreover, the funds generated from slum tours don't always trickle down to the community. In many cases, tour operators and private companies pocket most of the profits, leaving the slum dwellers with little to no benefits. This raises a critical question: who truly gains from slum tourism, and at whose expense?
As slum tourism continues to grow in popularity, one should stop and think about our roles as tourists and individuals. Are we okay with being mere spectators as we exploit others? Or do we really have it in us to become catalysts of change? If done ethically, slum tourism can spark conversations that hold the power to bring meaningful change. But for that, the focus needs to shift from voyeurism to empowerment.
At its core, the question remains: would you open your doors to let the world observe your life, not knowing whether they're there to understand, judge, or to simply walk away?
In a world where everyone's searching for their soulmate — the one to grow old with — the dating scene has taken a very different turn. But fear not! If you've ever found yourself stranded in romance, this feature will help you navigate the chaos with ease

Have you grown up seeing those dreamy romantic movies where 'Prince Charming' would enter the damsel's life and sweep her off her feet? Have you also been waiting for your perfect partner to find you on a mundane day, hoping the meet-cute turns into a fairytale love story? However, all that you are being able to do is look for someone, barely half-decent, online? Well, that's the sad truth for so many hopeless romantics around the globe!
Dating in today's world is mostly about swiping right and left on a number of profiles, without being directly consumed or emotionally involved in the entire process. With the new generation of millennials and Gen Z, appearances hold more value than meaningful conversations that help connect on a deeper level.
Gone are the days when one would wait for their special someone to call on the landline. Today's digital age is spoiling and ruining the overall experience of dating, meeting new people, and eventually falling in love. Who is to blame? The dating apps?
Tinder, Bumble, Hinge, Grindr, etc. are the new forthcoming applications that have given young adults a platform to explore,
Are we all just confused?
choose, and reject people. Before these online dating platforms became popular, people would meet organically, in bars, at house parties, sometimes even at work,
or just get introduced by friends or family. It was natural for people to know each other first, understand each other's traits, and then develop a romantic relationship.
The pandemic has changed the picture across the globe and has completely disrupted people's social and love-lives in a profound yet disappointing way.
In my therapy sessions, I have heard some amazing stories about clients who expressed how they met the love of their lives on a dating platform. That excites me and worries me a little at the same time. Overall, it fills me with hope that these platforms are not all a waste. Maybe they are eventually helping young adults find their choice — find the true love they have been seeking.
However, some cases have come to the fore where a new phenomenon has been doing rounds — ghosting. The Oxford Dictionary defines ghosting as ending a personal, moderately long-term intimate and romantic relationship with someone suddenly and without explanation, withdrawing all communication.
Being ghosted is probably one of the most painful experiences to ever happen to anyone. Ghosting as a concept is extremely hurtful to the person on the receiving end of things. It involves no explanations and no closure on why things had to end. The person is left thinking, analysing, and questioning himself/herself over what went wrong for this to have taken place.
The reason why a person would ghost is still unknown and complex. In the context of online dating, ghosting can occur anytime — there is no set date, time or occasion for someone to ghost another. It could happen after a few conversations, after the first official date, or when it's least expected — when one is knee-deep in with a person, has gone on a couple of dates, and has started to trust them deeply. Just then, bam! They ghost! While this behaviour may appear socially acceptable, dating becomes harder and people become prone to having commitment issues.
As a therapist, I have been in sessions with many clients who have either faced ghosting or ghosted people for several valid reasons. It is not only important to understand the reasons, but it is also vital to reflect on why you are being ghosted. It is not necessary to always see yourself as a victim in the relationship, someone who is not worthy of love or does not deserve love. It may or may not be your fault,

so it is integral to understand the reasons, deal with it, and move on peacefully to a new experience.
Here are five underlying causes for ghosting a relationship:
There are times when there is a lack of communication between two adults involved in a romantic relationship. Poor communication can drive a wedge and destroy the entire relationship. Why? Because it will be based on mere assumptions, questions, and absence of trust. It is difficult for some people to be vulnerable in front of their partners or have tough conversations. They may even fall out of love during this whole process of avoiding the conversation.
Leaving seems easier than talking about things and moving towards a positive resolution. This is where abandonment issues also arise. Some people ghost because they are internally scared that the other might ghost them first. The worst part is they won't have enough courage to speak about it since it's a vulnerable discussion to have. So, to avoid the entire charade of being abandoned and questioning one's self-worth, they end up ghosting first.
Being a therapist, I can go on and on about boundaries — setting and maintaining them in all sorts of relationships — new or old. People tend to fear forming boundaries as they feel this might drive away this new person for whom they are catching feelings. Forming boundaries could lead to distance or the other person feeling offended. People often ghost due to a lack of boundaries because they struggle to communicate their feelings or set limits in relationships. Instead of expressing discomfort, disinterest, or the need for space, they choose avoidance as an easier option. This behaviour often stems from fear of confrontation, people-pleasing tendencies, or inability to manage emotional conflicts. By not setting clear boundaries, they unintentionally resort to ghosting as a way to escape the situation. So, learning how, when, and why to set boundaries in relationships can be an extremely helpful intervention.
Low self-esteem and self-worth are the root cause of many problems. These are directly related to ghosting — the person who is
ghosting struggles with feeling inadequate. If one isn't confident in their own skin or constantly has self-doubt, the chances of them ghosting their partner are really high.
You've all heard the phrase, "It's not you, it's me"? Sometimes people really mean it. Many people believe that they are doing their partner a favour by ghosting them before things turn too ugly or their self-esteem and self-worth issues start to surface. Instead of working on the problem, working on themselves and their issues, and discussing it with their partner, they would rather ghost. It's easier after all!
This is the exact opposite of having self-esteem issues. People who are covertly narcissistic and think too highly of themselves tend to reject people and ghost them. These people lack basic emotional empathy and naturally, it doesn't bother them to ghost or hurt someone. People who show a high sense of confidence, charm and extroverted traits in an inauthentic way are susceptible to ghosting you.
People who display dominating and controlling tendencies in a relationship often end up ghosting the other person. Here, all they want is an upper hand in making decisions in the relationship — one such instance being ghosting their partner out of the blue. The expectation here isn't to end the relationship, it is deeper and uglier. They want their partner to chase them and beg them to come back and continue the relationship.
If the partner who has ghosted reaches out again, it confuses the person being
If you have been ghosted in multiple relationships, self-care is a prominent part of your recovery. Journalling your thoughts, taking part in activities, sleeping and eating well are all very simple but effective measures. Remember, this too shall pass
ghosted even further. They can't decide if this is the end or if there is light at the end of the tunnel. This kind of power dynamic can turn out to be extremely toxic and unhealthy in a relationship and cause severe abandonment issues.
Now that you are aware of why people ghost, here are some self-care tips : If you have been ghosted in multiple relationships, self-care is a prominent part of your recovery from ghosting. Life can seem unfair and harsh during those times, but being kind to yourself is paramount. There is no need to beat yourself over what happened; rather, work towards self-improvement.
Journalling your thoughts, taking part in different outdoor activities, sleeping and eating well are all very simple but effective measures. One habit that you should avoid completely is snooping online and looking at what your partner is doing. There will also be times when you feel like you've been wronged and it is important to seek revenge and show them their place.
But, please stop and take a deep breath, and know that this too shall pass. The end of a relationship is certainly not the end of
your life. These things and thoughts would not help you in the long term and impact your overall growth.
On the other hand, if you tend to ghost new partners when dating, it's essential to consciously reflect on yourself and the reasons behind this behaviour. Ghosting can be tormenting and hurtful for the person experiencing it. Frequently ghosting multiple new partners indicates a clear pattern and suggests something deeper needs attention. This calls for self-assessment and reflection to understand the reasons. Work towards forming healthier perspectives on relationships, connections, and the impact of hurting others.
If you are finding it hard to overcome the trauma of being ghosted, therapy can be an effective solution. Also, if you are finding it hard to reflect and understand why you end up ghosting others, therapy can lead to a lot of answers. It can be an eye-opening process that highlights insights about life, love, and dating in the new digital age.
Before I wind up, I would like to take this opportunity to remind you that being in the talking stage, right before taking the next step to date, can be a tricky affair. As you get to know a new person and let them into your sweet little world, a lot of thoughts and ideas will clash or match.
At such times, it becomes essential to practice empathy and step into the other person's shoes to understand where they are coming from. With patience, understanding, and an open mind, you can easily navigate the modern dating world.
Additionally, while you're at it, remember that you'll meet so many people on the way that you won't hit off with and ghosting them can never be an answer. If you really feel you're not clicking with someone, be graceful enough to let them know. If you have the right tacts, you can also politely give them feedback, if you feel it's needed.
Similarly, if you get ghosted, don't take it to your heart. Learn, if there's a lesson and move on. You know, as they say, "there are plenty of fish in the sea". You never know what's waiting for you in the times to come.
So, as swiping left, right, and centre becomes the new norm in dating, it's time to swipe clean your inner-self and build the right foundations for a healthier and long-lasting relationship.

Fashion has always been a canvas for self-expression, a medium through which we make bold statements, challenge norms, and celebrate identity. In recent years, the industry has witnessed a significant shift — the rise of genderless fashion. This movement isn't just a fleeting trend; it's a revolution reshaping the way we think about clothing and identity, proving that style transcends the confines of binary labels.
Gone are the days when wardrobes were divided into "his" and "hers". Today, racks are filled with oversized blazers, fluid silhouettes, and versatile fabrics that cater to all body types, regardless of gender. The beauty of genderless fashion lies in its freedom — the freedom to wear what makes you feel authentic, without the constraints of societal expectations.
So, what's driving this movement? It's a cocktail of cultural shifts, celebrity influence, and the unapologetic confidence of younger generations like Gen Z and the millennials. These trailblazers have embraced gender fluidity as a cornerstone of their identity, demanding inclusivity from the brands they support.
Celebrities such as English singer Harry Styles, with his headline-making outfits, and American singer-songwriter Billie Eilish, known for her love of unisex silhouettes, have added fuel to the fire, inspiring millions to explore further.
Brands, too, have stepped up and embraced the trend. From Gucci's avant-garde unisex collections to high-street labels like Zara launching gender-neutral lines, the industry is recognising the power of inclusivity.
Even social media, fashion industry's digital playground, has become a stage for breaking barriers. Instagram feeds and TikTok trends are brimming with individuals proudly showcasing their genderless wardrobes, proving that personal style can't be confined.
However, my take on this is that genderless fashion isn't just about clothing — it's a statement of intent. It challenges the deeply ingrained stereotypes that society has upheld for decades, offering a refreshing perspective where individuality takes centre
stage. For me, personally, this movement is less about what's in your wardrobe and more about dismantling the rules of who you're "allowed" to be.
Yet, this revolution isn't without its hiccups. While the concept of genderless fashion is empowering, it often leans heavily towards traditionally masculine proportions, leaving some wearers feeling alienated. And while many brands are genuine in their efforts, others see it as a mere marketing tactic, skimming the surface of inclusivity without addressing deeper issues of representation.
Despite these challenges, the rise of genderless fashion signals a brighter, more inclusive future. It's a reminder that fashion should be about self-expression, not self-limitation. After all, style is as unique as the person wearing it, and no one should feel confined by the boundaries of gender labels. This movement isn't just changing what we wear; it's transforming how we see ourselves and each other. So, if an oversized suit or a flowing dress makes you feel your best self, wear it and flaunt it unapologetically!
While not everyone can stick to the conventional modes of well-being, these unique activities are changing the way society views wellness in the present era

Irecently came across an Instagram advert promoting puppy yoga!
Now, I love dogs and yoga but for a brief second, I was confused as to what puppy yoga really is. Are dogs doing yoga now? I had no clue, otherwise, I would have enrolled my pup, too. But it turns out that's not the case. It's just people doing yoga while their furry companions run around!
Isn't that the dose of happiness we all want in our lives?
Since people have started counting mental health under the domain of fitness and wellness, many unique activities have started picking up pace. While traditionally, people spoke of meditation, yoga, and walks for good mental health, things are slowly changing. New techniques such as journalling, mindfulness, and gratitude have also come to the fore. While today's generation is deeply concerned about its
mental health, they need more engaging and fun ways to achieve it than just journalling thoughts in a diary.
The traditional methods of maintaining good mental health and well-being, such as the ones mentioned above have been proven beneficial time and again. However, for them to actually work, one requires a certain level of patience and skill. One eventually needs to master the art to see long-term results. And, let's be honest, who has patience these days?
People want to feel good mentally but they want it quick! Almost like a dopamine rush that makes one jump with joy. But that's not the science we will jump into in this feature!

The benefits of puppy yoga are manifold. Yoga helps with flexibility, mindfulness,
strength, and balance. At the same time, being around puppies can de-stress a person, increasing happiness and overall well-being. It has been proven that the playful energies that puppies bring to the floor reduce stress and anxiety as they boost happy hormones. The social interactions, laughter, and light-heartedness of these sessions elevate the attendee's state of mind, leaving them refreshed and rejuvenated. This makes puppy yoga a wholesome wellness practice which is great for the body, mind, and heart.

Having its roots in traditional forms of healing, sound therapy has found a whole new popularity amongst wellness-seekers of today. In India, sound healing has been linked to Vedic traditions where chanting mantras such as 'Om' was believed to align the body and mind with profound vibrations. In Buddhism, singing bowls have been known to create harmonic frequencies that induce a meditative state in listeners. Even in Greece, ancient people used sound therapy to treat ailments and mental illnesses. Point in the picture: the power of sound has been recognised and used for wellness for ages.
Now, many wellness centres and retreats have introduced sound therapy sessions. During these sessions, the participants usually lie down or sit in comfortable postures and the facilitators use instruments like gongs, singing bowls, flutes, or tuning forks to create a relaxing and harmonious environment. The vibrations from these tools travel through the body, releasing built-in stress and worries. It influences brain activity and puts a person in a calmer, deep-meditative state.
Sound therapy offers numerous benefits for mental, emotional, and physical well-being. Sound vibrations can reduce stress and anxiety by promoting the release of endorphins. It also helps in enhancing focus and mindfulness. You must have noticed that a lot of people use calming music while working or before sleeping; that's because such tunes reduce stress and improve focus. So, you don't really have to go to a wellness centre for these benefits. Find a nice track on YouTube and feel like you're floating above the clouds with divine music in the background.
Do you remember the ice bucket challenge that gained popularity a few years ago on social media? The same challenge where everyone was dunking loads of ice on

themselves and recording their reactions? Well, turns out it's not just a fun challenge but a very beneficial one.
Just like sound therapy, ice bath has traditional roots, dating back centuries. Ancient Greeks, Romans, and Nordic people often included ice baths in their daily routines for vitality and healing.
In the modern age, this practice has been popularised by athletes and wellness practitioners as it is known to promote muscle recovery, blood circulation, and resilience. As ice baths are popularising, you will see that they are a part of many
wellness centres, retreats, and even workshops. These baths have several benefits for both your mental and physical health. It helps reduce muscle soreness, inflammation, and improves recovery. You know, your mother is not wrong for compelling you to clean your room. While it surely makes your space look aesthetic, it also holds the power to declutter your mind. Here's how
Astha Anand
Have you ever walked into a garden adorned with dewy green grass, neatly trimmed bushes lining the sidewalls, and plants blossoming with roses and daisies? Did it suddenly make you feel like all your life problems have disappeared into thin air and everything is just better?
Or have you ever walked into your room, maybe after days of zero organising and felt like you are drowning in uneasy thoughts, like all your problems have piled up on your head, just like the pile of clothes on
the chair in that corner? Does all this sound familiar? Well, read along as I solve this puzzle for you.
When people feel anxious or stressed out after a long day at work or after a fight with a friend, some go for therapy, some might indulge in yoga, while others journal their thoughts to feel lighter.
However, don't we all know that one person who indulges in cleaning their wardrobe or dusting their shelves as they believe it is equally, if not more so, beneficial for their mental health and peace? They are not wrong at all! Did you know that a healthy lifestyle and a sterile environment promote good mental and physical health?
Infact, it is a great way to clear your mind. So, the question that arises is can keeping your room clean and tidy actually result in amazing effects on your mind?
A lot of clutter and chaos in your surroundings leads to a string of negative thoughts in your head as mind and body have a very strong connection. As a result, one tends to overthink situations and eventually spirals down into a huge mess of emotional and mental instability. Thereby, it is essential to understand the correlation between your environment and your mood.
Let's try to recognise how cleaning your physical mess can help declutter unwanted psychological stress.
Cleaning helps in improving your overall focus. But how exactly? Too much clutter in your room, like your clothes, shoes, skincare products, books, etc., causes a visual overload. It makes it difficult for the brain to process so much information. With an information overload, one tends to shift focus towards less important things or things that don't deserve their attention. Eventually, neglecting important and meaningful things that require consideration and are right in front of the eyes. When you clean your room or surroundings, you tend to clear your headspace and allow your brain to relax and cool down. This, in turn, empowers the brain to focus on important things, things that matter and will bring out value.
When you see a messy home, you may not feel anything in the moment but somewhere in the back of your head, you have this lingering thought that clearing all of this one day will become even tougher and cause more stress. But when you actually get down to it — when you start addressing the need to declutter and clean your house, half of the job is already done. It's like a weight is lifted off your shoulders. Knowing that you are now in the process of cleansing itself is extremely therapeutic.
Imagine feeling disorganised before a big day at work or messed up before leaving for a date with the new guy you've been crushing over. These aren't great feelings to deal with. Living in a disorganised environment can lead to a lot of unwanted stress and anxiety. This anxiety can cause temper issues, disinterest, and mood swings. All of this will eventually ruin the experience you were heading out for.
One's environment speaks a lot about the person living in it. Those who live in a cluttered environment, would more often than not, have a low sense of self-esteem. People who don't put an effort into cleaning their surroundings and be in an elevated space, tend to feel helpless, demoralised, and sometimes might even consider themselves as a failure. But that can change.
One's environment speaks a lot about the person living in it. Those who live in a cluttered environment, are likely to have low self-esteem. Whereas, those who clean their surroundings tend to feel more positive as they feel they are in control of their lives
Once you start cleaning your space, be it your wardrobe, a small cabinet, or even your car, it can bring a sense of ownership over your life. Ownership brings control; having control over your life and how you feel, is a positive vibe overall.
Now that you understand how cleaning your surroundings and environment boosts overall mental health and satisfaction levels, let's dive into the process! Here are some methods that can help declutter the room and the mind:
Start small: There is no rush to clean the entire house in a single day. First, start with whatever seems the easiest and the fastest. It could be as small as a makeup vanity or a cabinet in the room or washing your car. Stick to a plan: Do your laundry, gather the trash, fold your sheets, dust your cabinets and bedside, wash the dishes, and then relax. Take a deep breath. This is enough for a day.
Imperfection is key: Don't aim for perfection. You should not be aiming to become a world-class home cleaner. Rather, you should look at having some fun and uplifting your mental health while at it. If you are cleaning your entire home, start with a quick closure on the garbage bins, pull them out of the house, wash the dirty dishes and clothes, and then move to the other big-ticket items like sweeping the floors or doing the laundry.
Ask for help: If you are struggling, and don't know where to start, ask for help, seriously. Everybody needs support at times. It is fine to ask for help. Reaching out is not a sign of weakness. Ask other people to hold you accountable for your plan of action for the day, asking for professional helping hands is also not a bad idea at all. You can delegate your work. The end result should be a decluttered space with no more mess and a better mental headspace.
I hear young adults, especially Gen Z, complaining that cleaning is fine but it is not fun. Sometimes, things don't have to be fun. However, if you are still reluctant to get on with the job, here are certain ways where you can turn mundane tasks into fun activites.
Clean with your buddy: Cleaning with your partner, your friend, or your family member can be a lot of fun and can also improve your camaraderie. When you work with a partner, you tend to joke around, work on your bond, and also inculcate the habit of sharing the load of responsibilities at home.
Dance your way through: If you find cleaning to be a mundane chore and you get bored easily, make a cleaning playlist. Music can instantly elevate your experience of decluttering your space. Turn up the tunes and dance around while you also sweep the floors or load the dishes in the dishwasher.
Set challenges: Having an organised cleaning routine — something you can follow each day — can really help in terms of knowing what is done, what is to be done, and what can be moved to another day. Apart from that, you can try challenging yourself. It could be time-based, speed-based, or you can find your fun way! Treat yourself: Now that you are adulting, treat yourself with good cleansers and disinfectants to ensure your cleaning process is efficient. Using good-quality products that you know about can help make the entire process a lot more likeable. Reward yourself: All the hard work you put into physical and mental cleaning deserves to be rewarded. Once you are done completing the assigned tasks for the day, have a piece of chocolate, treat yourself with a good hot steaming cup of coffee, or go for a movie you've been wanting to watch for some time.
Now that you are well-versed in the logic behind the feel-good factor you achieve after cleaning, I hope you'll start seeing this chore in a different light. Next time you feel low or have had a bad day, don't sulk and bury yourself in your blanket. Just turn up your speakers, pick up a dusting cloth, and clean away the mess in your room and the chaos in your head!
From jesters to stand-up, humour thrives on wit, defiance, and joy. While political correctness may challenge its glory, laughter will remain our most human and unifying survival tool
Gauri D.
Humour is one of the defining traits of the higher primates.
Humans have found ways to incorporate humour in daily life, through everyday scenarios, word plays, observations, and much more. It holds a special place in the hearts, providing solace in times of struggle, protest in times of injustice, a tickle in times of happiness, and butterflies in new lovers.
This long life of humour has transcended from innocent to offensive and jokes to deadpan or sarcasm. It brings out different aspects of wit and active psychological functioning. But what killed humour was the rise of political correctness.
There are many articles and writers who have blunted their swords in writing for political correctness. But these battles, I believe, are just one side of the coin. On the hidden side are the lost words filled
with joy and innocence, misunderstood in the world of political unrest.
It is one of the widely frowned upon yet thriving genres of comedy. It consists of offensive insults, often directed at a certain person or other performers, even the audience. Trading insults, making personal remarks, and throwing away political correctness to derive humour from dark situations are usually what insult humour thrives upon.
The genre came into existence as an option for political correctness. Because where do you go when women become womyn, and humans become humyn? These are sole and niche examples of the changing world politics and how narratives wish to control every aspect of our lives. Humour, more so, because it is the only medium that has the power to reach the most depraved person through one means or another. It has the power
to overthrow tyranny through political cartoons and character bits and humanise the oddities within us all.
One of the bastardised versions of humour is fear of jokers and ridiculing the jesters. When in fact, jesters and courtesans once held their heads high for their wit and humour. Jokers were an innocent portrayal of a lovable and goofy character that resides in us all. They are not exactly the victims of political correctness in the true sense of the word but have suffered through the same fate for a very long time.
There are many standup comedians we watch on our handheld screens. They joke of their own cultures and traditions, languages and habits, faults and foes. If a Japanese person jokes about Japanese culture, it is okay. But it becomes offensive when
Humour holds a special place in the hearts of humans, providing solace in times of struggle, protest in times of injustice and butterflies in new lovers. However, what killed humour was political correctness. Let's find out how
a different-looking person of a different nationality makes the same joke. Why? That person made the same observations. Just because the face of the joke changes, doesn't mean the joke becomes any less funny. Many a time, it is also on the audience to take a joke like a joke, without judgement and by keeping the politics aside. Otherwise, how can one cope with the fact that Jesus was, in fact, brown, an average German does carry the Nazi guilt, and a certain religion can have flaws beyond measure.
The term "politically correct" humour started in the 1970s among left-wing groups and was used as a way to joke about strict views within social movements. Over time, conservatives began using it to criticise efforts to make language more sensitive to social issues. This caused a backlash against politically correct humour by the late 20th century. What began as a self-aware joke became a strong criticism.
As a result, comedians changed their styles. Some tried to push boundaries to avoid being seen as "politically correct", while others took a more inclusive approach, leading to debates about whether humour should address social issues.
The show, 'The Big Bang Theory' presented a unique concept of Super Asymmetry. It prophesied on the show that the world is not perfect at all. It carries many flaws. And these flaws, these asymmetrical elements, are what makes the universe the place it is. It's a fictional concept of course, but doesn't it ring true in many aspects of our lives? We are surrounded and made of flaws. Humour is what makes life bearable. Laughter makes our lives lighter, and more fulfilled. If only we could let go of the political correctness and the anger in beacons with communities.

l 1 teaspoon garam masala
l Juice of 1 lemon
l Salt as per taste
For gravy:
l 2 tablespoons butter
l 2 tablespoons oil
l 2 large onions (finely chopped)
l 2 large tomatoes (puréed)
l 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
l 1 teaspoon coriander powder
l 1 teaspoon red chilli powder
l 1 teaspoon garam masala
l 2 tablespoons fresh cream
l 2 tablespoons cashew paste
(soak cashews in water and blend into a smooth paste)
l 1 teaspoon fenugreek leaves (kasuri methi)
l 1/2 cup water
l Salt as per taste
l Fresh coriander leaves
l A drizzle of cream
Instructions:
1. In a bowl, mix chicken with all marinade ingredients. Cover and refrigerate for at least two hours or overnight for best results.
2. Heat a grill pan or regular pan with a little oil. Sear the marinated chicken until golden brown and partially cooked. Set aside.
3. Heat butter and oil in a large pan. Add cumin seeds and let them sizzle.
4. Add onions and sauté until golden brown. Add the gingergarlic paste and cook until aromatic. Add tomato purée and cook until the oil separates from the mixture.
5. Stir in coriander powder, red chilli powder, garam masala, and salt. Cook for 2-3 minutes.
6. Mix in cashew paste and water, stir for a few minutes to create a smooth sauce.
7. Add the partially cooked chicken to the gravy. Simmer for 10-12 minutes or until the chicken is fully cooked and tender.
8. Stir in fresh cream and crushed fenugreek leaves for that signature flavour.
9. Taste and adjust the seasoning as needed.
10. Garnish with chopped coriander leaves and a drizzle of cream, and serve hot with fresh naan.
l 1 kg chicken (whole or drumsticks)

l 2 teaspoons green chilli paste
l 1 teaspoon garam masala
l 1 teaspoon cumin powder
l 1 teaspoon coriander powder

For cooking and garnish:
l Butter or ghee
l Chaat masala (optional, for garnish)
l Fresh coriander leaves (chopped, for garnish)

Instructions:
l Clean and pat dry the chicken pieces. Make deep cuts on the chicken to allow the marinade to penetrate.
