WELCOME

Summer is here and we have gone Vintage crazy, you may be forgiven for thinking that we stepped into the TARDIS and travelled back in time, but no, this is 2011 and we have not gone mad.

Thanks in no small part to the Royal Wedding vintage style is a dominant feature in many of the designers collections. Lashings of lace, Illusion necklines, two tiered skirts and lace sleeves are key looks for 2012. The vintage trend has saturated all areas of the bridal market. From the darling cupcake and cute posy bouquets, to the drama of black and white photography and old sepia tones. It looks like our romance with Vintage will continue for a long while yet. If like me, you love all that is vintage or retro, help is at hand as we present our first ever Vintage Bridal Fayre. It will take place at The Coal Exchange, Mount Stuart Square on Sunday 2nd October. Tickets are on sale now for only £1 and each ticket purchased will be entered into our prize draw for a chance to win £500!!!

The creation of a collection

A

Angela Pitcher Dowdell, the designer of Cardiff based design house ‘Blue’ takes you through the creation of her 2012 collection of silk bridal gowns. Read on to find out how South Wales brides have the chance to set the trends before the rest of the UK.

s a designer I am often asked “How do you come up with new designs?” Even with a fashion degree and many years experience, I only have a very woolly answer – “I sort of feel it.” What I do know is that each collection I create goes through very specific stages, the first of which is...

I carry around my sketch book. I don’t draw anything yet, but I take that sketch book everywhere with me. Whilst I carry around my empty sketch book I brew ideas. Then I start drawing. The main bulk of the collection is put onto paper in one session. After so long brewing ideas they tend to fly out onto the page.

All images are © Blue Bridalwear Ltd 2011

We edit. My assistant and I will go through my sketches and pick out the ideas we feel most strongly about. Then we group designs together to tell ‘stories’. Each story will develop a design theme. This process will spark new designs which are added to the groups of sketches. One of the things we are most excited about this collection are the dresses with the short/long skirts. We have a reputation for creating tea length gowns so this idea creates the opportunity to have a tea length gown and a long flowing train! We also continue a theme we started in our current collection – sleeves! Not many bridal gowns have sleeves nowadays, there is a selection of tea length gowns and an overall Audrey Hepburn/ Grace Kelly feel. We have two thirds of the collection sorted and we are happy.

The Launch. We launched the new collection at the prestigious show ‘White Gallery’ which took place in London 22nd to 24th May. The show was open to national and international buyers and press. We also had a catwalk show booked so that means we have to create an extra set of gowns for the models (as if we didn’t have enough to do!) Our brides. This new collection will be available from our stockists around the UK and Ireland from September. HOWEVER, the new designs are now available from our Cardiff studio, so South Wales brides have the chance to set the trends before the rest of the UK!

For further information contact Angela Pitcher Dowdell on 029 2062 4477 www.BlueBridalwear.co.uk

Production. I then draft patterns for the new designs. At this stage a toile is made. (A toile is a version of the dress made out of a cotton fabric.) I make any final tweaks and alterations to the paper pattern and then hand it over to my team who will cut out and stitch the gown. I am very lucky to have a fantastic team of people working around me who turn my initial ideas into beautifully crafted gowns. The Royal Wedding. Catherine Middleton looked FABULOUS! I am pleased on two other counts too – her dress had sleeves and clearly Grace Kelly’s wedding dress was part of the inspiration. These two things back up what I have been designing – phew! Her gown sparks ideas for the remaining one third of the collection that still needs to be created. Our final story will be ‘Chantilly Lace’.

Two-Tiered Skirts

Last season in skirts, three-dimensional florals hit critical mass. This season, designers focused on hemlines, creating skirts with two distinct tiers. Call it an exaggerated form of the peplum detail from previous seasons, and this time, it’s super flattering—the top tier is a genius way to camouflage wider hips.

Horsehair Trim Don’t worry horsehair does not come from our equine friends; it’s a synthetic fabric often used on the underskirts of gowns to create a cleaner shape and a crisper hemline. Continuing with the trend of turning dresses inside-out (see last season’s corsets), designers are now exposing this underlay fabrication, either as a visible hemline treatment or a lavishly looped sash or bodice detail. It works to create incredible volume and dimension on ballgowns and also provides a unique, frothy-yet-modern textural element.

DIAMANTÉ BRIDAL MAGAZINE www.diamantebridal.co.uk

Victorian styles

We saw lots of unique necklines this season, but “most spotted” goes to the illusion style, in which a sheer, delicate, and often embellished layer of fabric veils skin that would otherwise be exposed. (Think of illusion as “strapless, with coverage,” noting its power to transform a sassy, “look at my boobs” situation into something soft, elegant, and romantic.)

A big inspiration for the 2012 bridal season. Long, full skirts paired with corsets, lace, chokers, and high collars. This look really shows that our love for period costume never wanes.

Lace Sleeves

Blush Wearing a wedding gown in a non-white or ivory hue was, until recently, considered a pretty radical move. Then, a few seasons ago, we began seeing subtle pops of colour—from the faintest hint of silver or lilac to bright lettuce green—but colour was still the exception rather than the rule. This season, however, blush and pink shades appeared on dozens of runways, marking its official debut as an expected—not quirky— wedding gown hue. Perhaps this has something to do with Reese Witherspoon’s blush Monique Lhuillier wedding gown.

DIAMANTÉ BRIDAL MAGAZINE www.diamantebridal.co.uk

Monique Lhuillier

Since April bridal market fell just a few weeks before the Royal Wedding, several designers were inspired by Kate Middleton and what she might wear. For a great majority, this meant lace sleeves—a sleeker, more contemporary version of the voluminous sleeves that engulfed the young Princess Diana so many years ago. Turns out the recently dubbed Duchess of Cambridge did end up wearing lace sleeves to her wedding, and it’s only a matter of time before this regal look catches on in a big way. We can’t wait.

You just have to see it yourself New hair boutique ICONIC has finally opened just outside Cardiff. It’s been a year in the making, and looking at the attention to detail, it’s easy to see why.... The concept for the boutique, the design and the work has been the creation of artist and photographer Scott Clark. If you live in South Wales, you’ve probably seen his paintings and photography before. Iconic is more than a hair salon, it’s an experience; a visual celebration of all things iconic. As hair salons go, you couldn’t really call this one modern; in fact you’d be hard pushed to find anything clinical or white about it. Retro would be a better word to describe it as most of the interior uses reclaimed furniture. But, my oh my, its both refreshing and warm, its a true feast for the eyes... Its vintage, its shabby, its chic, its funky, its edgy, its retro, its dramatic - boy, does that place have some serious drama. From an ‘iconic’ wall, with images from the past, where customers are encouraged to add their own images, to a reception desk propped up by two 1960’s drop-handle bikes. There’s also a ceiling made from old doors, a seating area made from old, red velvet cinema seats, 80’s Athena style artwork in the bathroom and a wash area that features a mural of the gorgeous Audrey Hepburn. You can imagine how delighted business partners Mike Dearden and Marie Law must be now that they can finally see how their vision for an Iconic hair boutique has finally come to full-colour, feast-for-the-eyes fruition. e: iconichairboutique@gmail.com

Capturing the Past With a huge surge in the popularity of vintage-themed weddings, it was only natural wedding photographers would offer the option to process wedding photos in vintage style, i.e. images that have a ‘washed-out,’ faded, aged or sepia tint. Many forward-thinking photographers are doing brilliant jobs of creating a real vintage look to their images and offering the perfect album to match the style. The vintage look is something that is generally created in post-processing. Many professional photographers can process an image afterwards to make it look vintage. Great images should be the biggest priority. The vintage by Photo look can be created later but if you start off with poor images, Evolutio n www.p hotoevo there’s nothing you can ever do to change that. luti

Venues CHOOSING YOUR WEDDING VENUE IS ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT DECISIONS YOU’LL MAKE. The first thing to take into account is that there are likely to be two parts of your wedding to organise – the wedding ceremony and the wedding reception. As regards the ceremony, a church wedding is still the favourite choice for many couples, and most have a particular church in mind. In this case, the reception must be planned around the ceremony location. Factors such as ease of transport from service to reception will be important when planning your church wedding. If, on the other hand, you’re thinking about a civil wedding, you have the option of choosing a venue that will host both your wedding ceremony and your wedding reception. If this is what you are hoping for, you will need to choose a venue that is licensed for marriage ceremonies. Any number of buildings can make a perfect wedding reception venue, but the most popular are castles, country houses, stately homes and historic building. Here are four of the best.

THE NEW HOUSE COUNTRY HOTEL Situated on the fringes of Cardiff nestling amongst the Welsh hills, The New House Country Hotel boasts unrivalled views over the city and beautiful Vale of Glamorgan. The open fires, exquisite furnishings, fully equipped function suites, beautifully restored bedrooms and the award winning restaurant combine to create the perfect atmosphere in which to relax and unwind. The ideal wedding venue for your special day. The combination of a romantic Country House, excellent cuisine and that all important personal touch guarantees that you have the perfect wedding day. The New House have a variety of delightful wedding suites, including a beautiful marquee for your reception from 10 to 200 guests. www.newhousehotel.com

THE COED-Y-MWSTWR HOTEL The Coed-Y-Mwstwr Hotel is a delightful wedding venue near Bridgend. The Victorian country mansion provides a warm welcome for your Civil Ceremony and reception, while the extensive gardens provide excellent photographic opportunities. Combine all this with delicious Welsh fayre and you have a wedding day to remember. The Fox Room can cater for intimate occasions up to 25 people while the elegant Eliot Restaurant can seat up to 60 people. For larger weddings, the Hendre Suite can accommodate 170 (250 evenings) or alternatively they can arrange a Marquee in their grounds for up to 300 people. www.coed-y-mwstwr.com

TY NEWYDD COUNTRY HOTEL Situated at the gateway to the Brecon Beacons National Park is the stunning Ty Newydd Country Hotel. The venue provides every modern convenience for a wedding, whilst retaining the character and style of a fine Georgian country house. Originally built by the coal baron William Llewellyn, The Ty Newydd Country Hotel is a particularly popular choice for weddings, hosting, on average, 100 weddings per year. The 28 en suite bedrooms are complemented by the elegant Foxhunter Suite, with its adjoining Olympic Bar. The George Suite, which also serves as the hotels restaurant, serving freshly prepared locally sourced food, the residents bar with three quarter height oak panelling and residents lounge with an open fireplace and adjoining library. The beautiful landscaped grounds extend to over three acres, with magnificent views of the Beacons and Neath Valley, provide breathtaking photo opportunities for the big day. www.tynewyddcountryhotel.co.uk

THE BEAR HOTEL

The Bear Hotel has origins as far back as the 12th Century. Probably best known as being the inn where they changed the horses on the mail run from Cardiff to Swansea. This famous Coaching Inn is steeped in history. Nowadays, the hotel is famed for it’s fine home cooked food, friendly atmosphere and really good ale. The hotel’s facilities for Weddings are unrivalled. Venues include a traditional Georgian Ballroom with high ceilings and chandeliers, stone vaulted restaurant and our St Quentins Suite, with it’s own private courtyard. www.bearhotel.com

Formal Wear

THE GROOM With the revival of Vintage fashions, we couldn’t neglect the groom and groomsmen. Formal Wedding attire has always had classical elements included within the design, here we’ll focus on what is available, along with adding additional touches to give the outfits that original touch. From the ever-popular Peter Posh collection, the Newport Black Victorian frockcoat, matched with grey and black trousers, Wessex waistcoat with dark wine-coloured detailing and matching cravat.

This stunning, traditional Grey Mohair Morning Suit, by Torre, is a fantastic example of combining Vintage styling by way of pointed lapels and defined, V-shaped cut with a modern, silver leaf patterned waistcoat and cravat over a wing collar, pleated front dress shirt. Finished with Paulo Vandini black patent shoes and gold and black Fleur de Lis cufflinks.

MyTuxedo.co.uk

For the more modern groomsmen, the Claverley range, in a light grey and here finished with hot pink tie and handkerchief. Equally modern yet with a classic combination of solid jacket and striped trousers, the Jackfield range is both elegant and understated.

Best Dressed Boy

Every wedding is a special occasion, not just for the happy couple, but for the friends and family attending. It’s a day to enjoy, celebrating two people coming together to declare their love. It’s also statistically one of the events that many meet their own eventual beau. So, with this in mind, we’ve put together some styling tips, suits for those that don’t have to be confined to top hat and tails for the day, or even to change into for the evening, when the drinks are flowing and you may be looking to catch someone’s eye.

FIRST OFF, THE DON’TS ! First and foremost, don’t ever pick an outfit that makes you think “that’ll do”. Chances are the reaction you’ll get from anyone you meet will be the exact opposite. Summer is great for bright colours, but if you’re a self-confessed fashion disaster, go for solid colours and keep the garish patterns for ties or handkerchiefs (easily disposed of when you overhear comments!) Don’t be afraid to ask for help when you are shopping, or take someone along to give you an honest opinion. We all need a little helping hand every now and then.

LAPELS Most suits come with a step lapel, although this season we’re seeing many pointed lapels, with designers taking inspiration from the Vintage revival that is seeping into all areas of fashion. The shawl lapel is a rare yet great looking styling to a jacket. In silk on a velvet jacket, it says “I’m confident enough not to be another sheep in the herd”.

FABRICS & PATTERNS Woolen suits can be a little warm at this time of year, so team them with a light shirt if it is your choice. Linen suits, in light or dark colours, takes a certain amount of care before and during the day, to avoid looking like the laundry pile. If you’re looking to wear a pattern, take some time to choose the shirt, tie and any accessories so that you avoid looking like a selection from the dressing up box. Plaids, Tweeds (and sack-suits), checks and pinstripes are featured in many collections this season.

12

DIAMANTÉ POUR HOMME www.diamantebridal.co.uk

SUIT STYLING Whether it’s Geek Chic, 60’s Skinny or just an off-the-peg item, men can be baffled by the choice and often plump for the suit that will pass quietly in the crowd. Let’s look at some of the characteristics that can make you stand out, whatever your personal preferences. Very much at the core of suit designing are two basic elements; classicism and masculinity. By including or omitting certain variations, different outcomes are possible.

BUTTONS 1, 2 or 3, it really depends on what you prefer and your shape. Certainly avoid a single button if you are carrying a few extra pounds, as the strained jacket look doesn’t cut it.

CONFIDENT DETAILING Thankfully, for the adventurous out there, some designers are including great detailing within their suits. From contrasting stitching and raised seams for those still wanting to be slightly reserved, to defined V-shape double breasted jackets teamed with slim trousers.

ACCESSORIES Ever important, to finish a winning look. Ties are no longer obligatory when wearing a suit, although for a formal occasion, they still have their place. Cufflinks, scarves, handkerchiefs and the right shoes all go together to complement a stunning suit and can make or break your chances of standing out from the crowd.

FRANK LAMPARD When not playing on the pitch or tag-teaming in Ayia Napa hotels, Lamps would definitely organise one heck of a night out. Like many players of his calibre, he’d offer to get things going at his palatial home, before hitting the bars and clubs of Mayfair and Chelsea (pun intended). Drunken conversation will include: IT WAS OVER THE LINE!

MARK WRIGHT (ONLY WAY IS ESSEX) Ideal man to show your stag group the time of their lives around Chigwell and Brentwood. Obviously kicking the night of in The Sugar Hut, Mark will have you sipping the finest champagne, eyeing up the fittest girls and generally getting so out of your face, you wouldn’t even know where you’d been the morning after. Most likely to end up: Starkers, handcuffed to Mr Darcy’s collar.
