REDUCE WASTE

Pass me along to a friend or recycle me after reading The month of November November is the 11th month of the year in the Julian and Gregorian Calendars and one of four months with the length of 30 days. November was the ninth month of the ancient Roman calendar. November retained its name (from the Latin novem meaning "nine") when January and February were added to the Roman calendar. November is a month of spring in the Southern Hemisphere and autumn in the Northern Hemisphere. Therefore November in the Southern Hemisphere is the seasonal equivalent of May in the Northern Hemisphere and vice versa. November starts on the same day of the week as February in common years, and March every year. November ends on the same day of the week as August every year. In the pagan wheel of the year, November begins at or near Samhain in the Northern Hemisphere and Beltaine in the Southern Hemisphere.

 November's birthstones are the topaz (particularly, yellow) which symbolizes friendship and the citrine.  Its birth flower is the chrysanthemum  The Zodiac signs for November are Scorpio (until November 21) and Sagittarius (November 22 onwards).

My Dear Readers,

Dear Readers,

I promise to be always an awareness oriented editor. Here comes November with two different health topics! We are having “Movember” which is a combination between the word “Moustache” and the word “November” it directs the attention to men health awareness, moreover the other cause diabetic day on 14th of November and as Kuwait is the third highest diabetic country, we discussed with our beloved nutritionist and doctors about Diabetes and how to deal with it.

November has been a very action packed month for the CP team, Kuwait was certainly keeping us busy trying to keep up with the exciting events which took place. Who isn’t going to remember this month as it featured the largest fireworks display in our history, landing us in the Guinness Book of World Records as well as other unprecedented events that took place such as the vigorous protests which show how much Kuwaitis are passionate about our country, not to mention the opening of the fantastic new Avenues Mall phase III and the second cinema company ‘Grand Cinemas’. I am getting dizzy just listing it all and can safely say that this month has been one that will go down in history. More importantly it is World Diabetes Month, and I’m proud to say that Kuwait actively participates in the awareness of this chronic and prolific illness, as demonstrated by the Beat Diabetes Marathon initiativeas well as free testing to the public supported by the Dasman Diabetes Institute, where I hail all those that support this cause or who work there for their definite contribution to awareness andcommitted research to find a cure. Incidentally it’s also Movember, and that means that men just as much as women must remember to have their annual health checks. We’d like to keep our fathers, brothers, husbands and friends healthy and around us for as long as possible. So men get out there and make that appointment with your doctors. Last month’s issue of CP went off with a bang, due to (if I do say so myself) three lovely powerful and hardworking Kuwaiti females gracing the cover, and interesting feature articles from our various talented contributors which led to a few people calling us to request a chance to write for us well. All in all I think November has been a memorable month for us all, and rememberwe have been told that this is going to be cold across all continents; so perhaps we can all finally pull out our serious woolies and boots. Happy November to you all !

I am so excited that our team of Contributors is growing and we have some finest talent joining us from this month. We always wanted to promote the real talents of Kuwait and its youth and with CityPages we are proud to be the pioneer in this mission. So, if you are a Kuwaiti and have any talent and skill which you think is outstanding, please come forward and contact me and we will give you all the exposure you deserve. We have several new segments in the magazine that we will be revealing through our next issue of CityPages so stay tuned and look forward to the surprises we have in store for you. At the end I would love to have a cause in every issue of CityPages and if you have a campaign or you have a cause you think might slip from our minds please share it with us at citypageskuwait@gmail.com and we will fully support you and your cause. Now I will leave you to live our interesting life in our CityPages….. Enjoy! Happy Movember!

How to Deal with Frustration F

rustration is a mental state that can lead to remorse and melancholy. It is important to control your frustration and deal with it in a unique manner. Frustration can be dealt with successfully by remaining positive and not allowing your mind to drain out. Continue to act in case you tend to develop frustration. Continuous action can go a long way in shaping up your attitude and building up your confidence. Stop worrying over your failures that have led you to the situation of frustration. Never move your focus away from your goal. You might have moved away from your goal for a moment. It does not matter. Get along and remain focused on what you would like to happen. This kind of attitude will help you in keeping the rising frustration at bay. Before getting frustrated you would do well to research the situation to find out what other thing is working well for you. If you can find out the thing that is working for you, then you can focus more on that particular thing instead of repeating the earlier things that failed miserably. This is because of the fact that concentration on a thing that can bring you solace and good results can go a long way in building your positive attitude towards life. Most people that reel under the pressure of frustration normally tend to brood over failures rather than moving forward. Follow the tips given above in your bid to deal with frustration in a successful manner. You would certainly meet with success and lead a dignified life. Great scientists of the past have achieved success in their lives mainly due to their positive attitude towards life. They all considered failures as stepping stones for success. It is extremely important to believe in our own innate strength to achieve success in life. C

The Benefits of Cognitive Training Individuals with learning challenges need some form of cognitive training. Cognitive Training is the term used to train the underlying cognitive skills one needs to be able to learn. Cognitive skills include: Attention, thinking before acting, memory, visual and auditory processing, speed of information processing, as well as logic and reasoning. Individuals suffering from weak memory (whether poor long or short term memory or poor working memory) or individuals who find it extremely hard to focus and sustain their attention find learning increasingly difficult. Although repetition and extra tuition helps, it's not always very effective. The principle underlying cognitive training is to help improve the "core" abilities and self-control which are in themselves necessary before an individual can function successfully in his/her school life. The exercises or procedures involved in the Cognitive Training Program "drill for skill" directly in the areas where basic specific cognitive difficulties occur. Dr. Gad Elbeheri

B

ecause of the above nature of cognitive training, we at Genius Brain, Discovery Center in Kuwait support the view that individuals with learning challenges benefit greatly from cognitive training programs especially those that stress on the transfer of benefit or skills. Typically achieving individuals as well as those with Attention Deficit Disorder, Dyslexia, ADHD, Dyscalculia, slow learners and high functioning autistic benefit greatly from such programs.

In case of ADHD children who are on medications, our cognitive training offers a complementary approach which works hand in hand with the medication to bridge the gap in academic progress and increases cognitive alertness of the individual leading to better learning aptitudes and results. For further information about our program please visit our website: www.kuwaitgeniusbrain.com or come and take our cognitive brain screener! Give us a call at 22913789 / 99987921 / 99987925 / 99987926

At Genius Brain Cognitive Training Program, our sessions are given on an individual basis and levels of difficulty of presented tasks generally depend on the current level of cognitive functioning of the student. Our cognitive training program starts with a pre-test to identify a bench mark against which progress can be measured. Post tests are then carried out after the completion of our program to establish both the benefit and the validity of the cognitive training program. But, generally speaking, no improvement results can ever exceed the value of self-worth and increase in self-esteem of the individuals who successfully finish our cognitive training sessions. At Genius Brain, our cognitive training program is entirely in English and that is why we insist in only enrolling individuals whose English language proficiency is advanced enough to benefit from the program. We also insist on ‘transfer’ and discuss how progress on our program is likely to affect the individuals both at home and at school. November 2012

Soul Food

On my Soul menu today is a concept that is not so new, its actually a practice that has been called for by many great thinkers, preachers and philosophers through history. On my menu today is: Self-care. Self care is not something that comes naturally or easily for a lot of people – when you’re hitting burn out you don’t always stop and think: OK, I need to stop and rest and take care of my heart or my soul. Being diagnosed with any disease, diabetes for example, could be your rock bottom, but learning to take care of your self and nurturing both soul and body will allow you to over come this diagnosis and learn to live in harmony with your diagnosis and deal with it in a better way.

W

hen you take care of yourself, you will notice the difference in your state of mind; you will learn to think differently, act differently and do things differently. Even more important is that when you take care of yourself, by default you see an improvement in your health and overall wellbeing. When your needs become a priority, your life will change, you will be able to handle the messy parts better, you will enjoy the small pleasures of everyday life and more importantly be happy! So now that you know what self-care will do to you and how it will change your life, lets talk about how to go about taking care of yourself. Generally speaking, self-care requires a few things but we will start with these: declarations, intentions and gratitude. Declarations are “I” statements that are used to really drive home beliefs, thoughts and feelings that you may be feeling shaky on. Declarations are tools to help you sink into your own beauty, light and inner power. An example of a declaration would be: “I love who I am and I am grateful for the journey that has brought me to this place”. Another could be: “I believe in my ability to do whatever I put my mind and heart to”. Feel free to use those until you can come up with your own, and remember, there is no right or wrong, there is no one to judge what you write, this is all for you and its meant to help you along your self-care path. Next are Intentions, which are calls to action: Most of the time you can start an intention with a verb. What’s something that you really need to do? Trust, believe, honor, and accept. These are intentions, and they are a strong way to get you grounded here and now. Some examples of intentions are: “Trust that your potential has no limits” or “Trust yourself and trust your dreams”. Again, those are just examples; you are

welcome to use them or come up with your own authentic intentions! Following your declarations and your intentions for yourself, is gratitude. Gratitude could alternatively be called gratitude practice and if you have been following my past articles you will know that this one is a top favorite of mine. The gratitude practice answers the question “What am I grateful for in this moment?” It could be one thing or several; the quantity doesn’t matter – what matters is that you are doing it and practicing it. Slowing down and touching base with the things that are bringing beauty to your day will open up your heart and your soul. The last part to your self-care routine is the most important of the practice and that is Unplugging! And boy is this a hard one to do? We are all connected 24/7, between our PCs, iPads, smartphones, social media, email, etc. I’m getting tired just listing them! The point is we are constantly being bombarded by an influx of information and sometimes we simply need to unplug our selves from all that clutter. Unplugging and tuning out of the world of technology for a short period every day fosters quiet and

tranquility – it allows calmness into your day. We might not notice how connected we are because it has become second nature to us - and trust me even as I preach this to you - I also struggle with this sometimes. Old habits die hard, and being connected is just so easy these days that it becomes a challenge to not be connected and plugged in the whole time. But remember, it is through challenge that you grow and if this is a challenge to you then you are on to a good thing. If your are feeling exhausted every day and ending your day with your energy completely depleted, then try unplugging, and allow yourself time to recharge. Do this for a few days and notice how refreshed you feel and focused you are. My last thought to you, if you have recently been diagnosed with diabetes, or have been struggling with it for a while, I hope you will adopt these practices in to your life and start to notice a difference in the way you feel. Many times we neglect the connection between body and soul, but it's a happy and fulfilled soul that allows a healthy body to thrive; “To enjoy good health, to bring true happiness to one's family, to bring peace to all, one must first discipline and control one's own mind. If a man can control his mind he can find the way to Enlightenment, and all wisdom and virtue will naturally come to him.” ~ Buddha

How much do you rely on the nanny called T.V. to raise your kids? Did you know that on average children between the ages of 2-5 spend about 32 hours a week in front of the screen, be it a television, ipad, dvd, or any of these electronic gadgets. This means that per month they are glued to a screen for about 5 full days! That’s a good 2 months of the entire year unproductively wasted. Its effects can be detrimental.

D

uring the formative years of a child’s life there is huge brain development going on, and screens can affect, delay and obstruct this development. In older kids, an abundance of the screen limits physical activity, opportunities for real life social interaction, family quality time, reading and creative thinking. More screen viewing is also very closely linked to obesity in kids.

differences in brain development between kids who watch a lot of television, and kids who don’t. Many freeways and networks develop in the brain of a stimulated child. Networks associated with language, emotional intelligence, interpretation, etc. Too much exposure to television results in fewer of these freeways being formed as only a part of the brain, a network is constantly being fed.

There is no harm on limited, productive and educational screen time, in fact there can be many benefits if programmes are chosen and watched selectively. It is very easy to become consumed by it and before we are aware of it, our brains switch off as we sit complacently in front of it.

This means that from childhood right through to adulthood, especially if not corrected, people are not developing to their true potentials holistically and therefore struggle with many social, psychological and other challenges.

Studies have also shown that when kids are exposed to a lot of fast paced videos, and also violent ones, they tend to display aggressive behaviour that could continue into adulthood. They also develop an irrational worldview that the world is a scary and fearful place- very much a warped ideal of reality. Fast paced cartoons such as sponge bob and others are also linked to attention deficit disorders and other learning problems. Kids expect that real life should be normalised according to these cartoons and movies. They tend to get bored in real life situations quickly as it becomes too slow paced for them. Their realities are based on the cartoons and movies they watch, where a whole life story would unfold in a few hours, while their own lives and situations take much longer to unfold than this. Studies have shown that there are clear physical

To ensure that we strike a balance for our kids now, and assist them in developing their whole brains and personas here are some steps parents can take. These steps would help parents ensure that the time spent watching television, playing video games and ipad games is quality time that has none of the above mentioned destructive tendencies. • Limit screen time and stick to it. The maximum for older kids being about 2 hours a day, and this may still be too much. • Find creative alternative non-screen activities to fill time such as puzzles, arts and crafts, and other hobbies. • Keep all bedrooms free from electronic gadgets, and have an allocated family area where laptops and televisions can be used. • Turn the TV and other devises off during meal times. Eating while being distracted by TV causes us

to overeat, as we are not fully focused on our meal. • Limit screen time to weekends only. Ideally this would prevent insomnia related problems, and would assist in ensuring homework gets done efficiently. • Allocate designated focus areas for homework and study, away from screens and mobiles, etc. • Be selective on what choices you make in watching TV. Once the chosen program is over be disciplined in switching the screen off and moving away. • Limit your time in front of the screen, on your mobile, etc. You will be modelling to them what is expected, what is ideal and balanced- as parents we must walk our talk. • Rather than watching and playing games aimlessly, raise discussions about what was watched, find what lessons can be learnt from what was watched, etc. This encourages free thinking, rather than passively absorbing propaganda that is fed to us through the media. • Encourage physical activity, and get involved too so that physical activity becomes a family pass time- a great way to capitalise on quality time. • Encourage your kids to get involved with household chores and responsibilities, this will give them a meaningful purpose, boost their confidence levels, as well as awareness about their social responsibilitiescertainly a great alternative to screen time. • Get your kids involved in volunteering, young kids can also become part of community activities if they are taken along as parents and older kids volunteer their time. • Encourage them and yourself to keep a log/ diary. Time the hours we are on screen- this creates an awareness about the amount of time we actually waste being unproductive. • Limit and stop night time viewing as it leads to sleeping late, and sleep problems, especially if what was being watched was violent and disturbing. Incorporating just a few of these suggestions may prove to have profound short and long term effects on our kids, our families and the way we perceive the world. With less screen time we allow ourselves to seek ways to be more productive citizens who create our own destinies rather than watch others doing so on TV or Internet. We will be gifting ourselves with the opportunity to live our lives more fully. November 2012

Interview

Thinking of Kuwait’s Future Talal M. Al-Muhareb, the Third Constituency Candidate for parliament elections 2012, has a dynamic and interesting personality. He decided to run for elections to further his ideas for developing the potential of Kuwait and gives citizens the opportunity to grow. He, foremost, wants to reach out to the Kuwaiti women, ensuring their rights and participation in the public sphere. His other priority is to find an effective way to deal with corruption and raising the people’s trust in the parliamentarians. It was a pleasure for CityPages to converse with Mr Al-Muhareb, who is an exciting candidate in the elections.

Please introduce yourself to our readers? I am lawyer, Talal Al-Muhareb Al-Homoud. I was employed in the private sector, thereafter I turned to the private sector, particularly the Islamic banks. I’m currently employed as the Acting Manager of the Legal Department in Warba Bank. In the last two years, I became very close to the political movement in Kuwait.

my country is passing through a political congestion, in addition to the present struggle between two powers. Furthermore, lawmen, including me, mostly have a political preference.

What changes would you like to see and in which sector?

I obtained a University degree majoring in law and moved on to obtain a diploma from the Public Authority for Applied Education majoring in accountancy. Then, I received an English language diploma from Berkley University, California in the United States of America. I plan to prepare my Master's thesis next year.

It is hard to answer this question briefly and the changes that I seek to make are in both the government and private sectors. The government sector needs screening and adoption of laws that combat corruption, which rot deeply and spread like cancer in the government structure. With regard to the private sector, amendment of the economic laws are to be made in a way that serves Kuwait economy including foreign investor law, BOT and cancellation of the sponsor condition, etc.

What or who inspired you to take law as a career?

What are some of the main points of your political agenda?

A lawyer’s profession has many advantages; it teaches defense of those who are oppressed, patience and careful thinking. Furthermore, being a lawyer allows you to meet different stratums of society, and when you help these people receive their stolen rights through judicature, you’re overwhelmed with good feelings.

I completed my electoral program and it will be distributed during the campaign. It includes acting to spread and implement laws, and solving all the issues that are stuck for tens of years and which worries people including health, education, infrastructure and adoption of anti-corruption laws which are listed in the agenda of the parliament. This is in addition to adopting the judicature independence and suing it.

Can you tell us about your education?

Tell us about your work experience. I have worked for several years in the government sector and was employed in the Legal Department of Boubyan Bank for a period of 4 years. I’m currently employed in the private sector, and am holding the position of the Legal Department Manager in Warba Bank. I participated along with some specialists in preparing a study for transforming the Realestate Bank from the traditional system to the Islamic banking system.

What are your hobbies? Reading and shooting

What inspired you to go into politics? My party is Kuwait, and I’m running out of my love for Kuwait and its people.

Which political area are you standing from? I live in a political environment and it is obvious that in the last few years, www.citypageskuwait.com

Why should people vote for you? Being nominated for the election, I naturally ask the people of my constitution to give me their trust in order to have the honor of representing them under the dome of Abdullah Al-Salem.

Your message to the people of Kuwait? My message to my fathers, mothers, brothers and sisters, who are the citizens of Kuwait is that I invite them to participate in the election and select whomever they see fit to represent them in parliament. I also ask them to vote for the strong and honest person who can act positively and swiftly to achieve making Kuwait the pearl of the gulf.

Your message for us at the CityPages magazine? All my love, appreciation and thanks to you and the esteemed readers of your magazine.

Dr. Ghanima is a Canadian Board certified dermatologist who is widely respected as an expert in the field of medical and cosmetic dermatology in Kuwait. Dr. Ghanima is the owner of the newly opened Skin Clinic in Kuwait. Dr Ghanima’s areas of specialization include: general dermatology, cosmetic dermatology including aesthetic laser skin resurfacing, laser hair removal, botox injections, ThermaLift (non-surgical face lift & brow lift), IPL photorejuvenation, sclerotherapy (treatment of spider veins of the legs), treatment of fine lines, wrinkles, scars, deep smile folds or other facial imperfections

Laser Hair Removal Are you one of the many experiencing excessive hair growth on different parts of your body? Having difficulty in removing such excess hairs with shaving, tweezing, sheera or waxing? Then if your are one of those, hair removal with laser is the best option you can consider. Laser hair removal is a technique medically used to remove hair from the body by matching a specific wavelength of light and pulse width. Wherein the amplified light passes through the skin and into the hair follicles that burns it and then stop the growth of hair. Light is absorbed by dark objects, which make laser energy absorbed by the dark material in our skin called melanin. Melanin is responsible in making our skin color as well as hair color. Skin color and hair color affect the result of the treatment. Laser works effectively on dark hair color and light skin color giving the best results, but with the help of modern technologies, laser can also be used on dark colored skin with specific doses. Treatment of laser for white, grey or blond hair is still being proven. Laser is used mainly in the areas of the body, like the legs, armpits, upper lip, and chin, arms, and face and bikini line. Its main principle is to target the dark hair follicles, heat it up without damaging or burning the surrounding skin. It is equipped with a pulse width that helps shorten treatment duration by shooting two or more pulses targeting multiple hair follicles in every shot. Best results are expected after several treatments, although laser slows down growth of the hair, permanent hair removal may not be certain. A number of treatment sessions will be needed to lengthen the time of hair re-growth. However, after few sessions, hair starts to grow finer and lesser.

Laser hair removal requires preparation for the client and the technician as well. Considering it to be a medical procedure, personnel involve in performing laser must have the license for laser and supervised by a licensed dermatology doctor with experience in handling laser. Consultation with the proper doctor must be the first step to be followed on first time laser treatments. Medications taken, medical history and your skin must be properly assessed before laser hair removal. You may also discuss the benefits and side effects of laser hair removal leaving you well informed of the treatment. When you are decided to do laser hair removal, you must not pluck, wax or sheera, or do electrolysis for atleast 3 to 6 weeks, for these removes the hair follicle or roots which are targeted by the laser during sessions. Shaving the hair is OK as long as it is done prior to or on the day of laser treatment. Exposure to sun or tanning makes laser less effective and increases the risk of side effects like skin lightening. If you were exposed to sun and your skin is tanned, you can wait till your skin lightens before doing laser hair removal. It’s better to avoid sun exposure 6 weeks before and after treatment of laser hair removal. Before the procedure, the laser technician will be inspecting the area for laser, cutting the hair into smaller length or shaving will be done, leaving a small part of the exposed hair. The laser machine will then be adjusted to the parameters suitable for your skin color, thickness and the area being treated. During the laser hair removal session, you and the technician should be wearing a protective eye covering appropriate for the machine used. Then the laser technician will activate the machine to emit pulses of light from the hand piece probe first on a certain area of the treatment to know if the right dose or parameters used are perfect for you and to check for unnecessary reactions. When doing laser hair removal, you will be expecting heat from the laser light that may give a feeling of discomfort or slight pain, a cooling system is provided for certain or depending on the laser machines used. Ice can also be applied over the area being treated for some time to help. If in the case you cannot endure the pain, topical anesthetic creams can be used to help numb the area. After the procedure, you may find the area inflamed or reddened, the technician will be applying steroid cream on the area. The doctor may also prescribe you to continue the cream and advice you as well to what to do at home. After few days from the laser session, you will be noticing some hair growing; do not mistake this for hair re-growth. The hair you may see will then fall out on its own or when pulled by your own fingers. Next session for your laser hair removal can be set after four to six weeks from your last session or when you start noticing hair to be growing out of your skin. During the period between your last sessions to your next session, avoid exposing your treated skin under the sun. If in case unavoidable, always wear sun protection to avoid complications. Laser hair removal results vary from one person to another. For best results, multiple treatment sessions might be needed depending on how your hair will react to the laser. Maintaining treatments will also help lessen the hair re-growth for longer periods of time. Laser hair removal is more affordable today compared before. Cost of treatment depends on the area being treated, the number of treatment sessions needed and the country where you are having your treatments. November 2012

Insights/Fun Reading

Mad Woman and Shopping in Kuwait I love shopping! Which woman doesn’t? Especially with all these shopping possibilities here in Kuwait – starting with small baklava stores all around the country, the supermarkets and souk style petite shops in diverse congested areas like Salmyia or Fahaheel and ending with big shopping malls such as 360, Marina, Avenues – you name it! Every weekend I indulge myself in one of the malls by walking through the various stores, checking on new collections and new offers on old collections, watching women, men, families and kids in all ages enjoying their stay at the mall, have a coffee in the morning and light lunch in the early afternoon in one of the many cafés or restaurants and go home feeling happily exhausted of the successful shopping day.

Now, all this accompanied with one or couple of girlfriends of mine will make such a day absolutely perfect! There is that much and more to check out, try on, compare, give advice and listen to the advice, and while doing all that – go through a selection of news and happenings that occurred since you last saw your dear friends. So again last week I was looking forward to the weekend in a shopping mall; this time I decided to target Avenues and planned to spend the whole Friday there, how much fun it would be! My dear chatty girls agreed to accompany me into my shopping experience and come Friday, me and my entourage arrive at the mall, park the car and march into the magic world of Avenues. The time flew and our hands got full with shopping bags in diverse sizes which we proudly presented to each other during enjoyable lunch. Feeling tired and satisfied with our walking tour through the mall – just imagine all the calories we lost during excessive wandering from shop to shop – a nice piece of dessert after the meal was absolutely justified. There was still so much to talk about and catch up with all the news in each other’s lives that we had to hastily talk and interrupt each other on the way to the car as we knew – it will be over soon and the next time we meet so much more new stories have to be told. Luckily, everybody knows how this mall gets packed in the late afternoon and that it will take time to get out of the parking deck, right? It isn’t different on this Friday – car park had been nicely filled bumper to bumper and the long snake out of cars crawling into or exit the mall was not moving at all. Beeping, waiting, beeping again, moving a mouse step forward, watching some that try to back down from their parking site and others that try to get into that site blocking the ones that try to back down and realize that there is no space for anybody to move in any direction whatsoever – that’s the perfect ending for my day. While many in neighboring cars impatiently wait t o move forward, stare at their blackberries and iphones with the frustration in their eyes, nervously watch the crowd of unmoving cars growing; conduct phone calls one after another with a stress note in their voices; while all this is happening me and my buddies get back to our favourite topic of shopping, to all the clothes, shoes and handbags we saw, wanted to have and promised to get the next time, and

www.citypageskuwait.com

we feel satisfied with the day. An hour later we have moved exactly two car lengths forward and the exit of the mall is not yet to see – perfect! We finally get to have enough time for each other’s stories!! Sour faces on the right and left in cars, outside cars, walking, talking, yelling at each other, waving to others to move on: all that is blended out by us and we dedicate our precious time for another important activity besides shopping – talking! Imagine the happy atmosphere that prevails in our car, I wish I could share some of that positive energy with my fellows trapped in the car park and my friends agree. After one hour and fifty something minutes we are finally out in the daylight again - all the stories were told and shopping got done, what a wonderful day in Kuwait, we all conclude and drive back home.

DIABETES MELLITUS Important Information What is Diabetes? Diabetes mellitus, commonly known as diabetes or sugar, is a chronic disease characterized by high level of sugar in the blood. This high level of sugar in the blood occurs either when the pancreas does not produce enough insulin or when the body cannot effectively use the insulin it produces. Insulin is a hormone that regulates blood sugar. Hyperglycaemia, or raised blood sugar, is a common effect of uncontrolled diabetes and over time leads to serious damage to many of the body's systems, especially the nerves and blood vessels leading to kidney failure, heart disease, stroke, and blindness.

TYPES OF DIABETES

KEY FACTS: According to the latest WHO report: • 347 million people worldwide have diabetes. • In 2004, an estimated 3.4 million people died from consequences of high blood sugar. • More than 80% of diabetes deaths occur in low and middle income countries. • WHO projects that diabetes related deaths will increase by two thirds between 2008 and 2030. • Healthy diet, regular physical activity, maintaining a normal body weight and avoiding tobacco use can prevent or delay the onset of type 2 diabetes.

Type 1 diabetes Type 1 diabetes (previously known as insulin-dependent, juvenile or childhood-onset) is characterized by deficient insulin production and requires daily administration of insulin. The cause of type 1 diabetes is not known and it is not preventable with current knowledge

Symptoms • Frequent urination • Unusual thirst • Extreme hunger • Unusual weight loss • Extreme fatigue and Irritability Type 2 diabetes Type 2 diabetes (formerly called non-insulin-dependent or adultonset) results from the body’s ineffective use of insulin. Type 2 diabetes comprises 90% of people with diabetes around the world, and is largely the result of excess body weight and physical inactivity. Symptoms may be similar to those of Type 1 diabetes, but are often less marked. As a result, the disease may be diagnosed several years after onset, once complications have already arisen. Until recently, this type of diabetes was seen only in adults but it is now also occurring in children

• Cuts/bruises that are slow to heal • Tingling/numbness in the hands/ feet • Recurring skin, gum, or bladder infections Gestational Diabetes Gestational diabetes is high blood glucose that develops at any time (usually around the 24th week) during pregnancy in a woman who does not have diabetes. A diagnosis of gestational diabetes doesn't mean that you had diabetes before you conceived, or that you will have diabetes after giving birth. But it's important to follow your doctor's advice regarding blood glucose (blood sugar) levels while you're planning your pregnancy, so you and your baby both remain healthy.

• Extreme hunger • Unusual weight loss • Extreme fatigue and Irritability If you have one or more of these diabetes symptoms, see your doctor right away. Also, women with gestational diabetes often have no symptoms which is why it's important for atrisk women to be tested at the proper time during pregnancy. Risk factors for gestational diabetes include: •Being overweight prior to pregnancy • Having had gestational diabetes in a prior pregnancy • Having a family history of diabetes

Symptoms: • Frequent urination • Unusual thirst

Symptoms: • Any of the type 1 symptoms • Frequent infections • Blurred vision November 2012

Health/Diet

A science-based monthly column based upon the U. S. National Institute of Health ‘Clinical Guidelines on the Treatment of Overweight and Obesity’

Dr. Mike, Dr. Bonnie and Dr. Jasem

Wellness, Fitness and Obesity Consultants

Lighten Up Kuwait © - 2012 With the New Science of Weight Control© Continuing With Let’s Make A Diet! Last month we were talking about, Food categories, and we said they were more useful than trying to count calories. Why? Because they are easy to understand, recognize and easy to use. The two most important food categories are:

pretty startling science-based facts about Glycemic Index and Glycemic Load!

Storage foods are processed carbohydrates and fats/oils. Storage foods always turn to fat once eaten!

So what would be the best choice here? Right, baked potato! What about toppings?Topping choices range from thick creamy gravy to cheese, butter and finally merely salt and pepper. What would be the best unprocessed choice? Of course, plain old salt and pepper!

Non-Storage foods are unprocessed carbohydrates and protein. Non-storage foods almost never turn to fat when eaten. Isn’t that easier than trying to count calories? Okay, let’s practice what we have learned … let’s try out our new knowledge in the real world! Imagine a salad bar line where desserts are usually placed first in the food selection line. Are desserts processed storage foods, or are desserts unprocessed non-storage foods? Right! Desserts are made of processed grains, and sugars. They are therefore storage food. Salads are usually placed next in the food selection line. Are salads storage foods which are processed, or non-storage foods which are unprocessed? Actually, salads are made of raw vegetables and are therefore unprocessed. But what about the salad dressings? The major ingredient in most salad dressing is oil. All oils are processed food. Therefore, most salad dressings fall into the storage category. In addition to oil, the majority of salad dressings also contain a sweetener, for example sugar or corn syrup, which of course are processed and therefore storage food. Exceptions are the non-oil and non-sugar diet dressings.

So you see, in the real world, food categories are quite easy to discern and very useful tools when choosing foods for weight loss and maintenance purposes. With minimal training, amateurs and professionals alike have demonstrated near 100% accuracy in identifying food categories by sight. Storage foods (processed) increase hunger hormones, while non-storage (unprocessed) foods decrease hunger hormones. In other words: Non-storage foods push the right buttons. And storage foods push the wrong buttons. See how easy it was to push the right buttons as you mentally went down the salad bar line? Now let’s talk about oils. It is important to note that not all oils are nutritionally bad for you. The good oils are the Omega oils which produce ecosanoids that actually prevent artery disease.

Next in our imaginary salad bar line we find the meat dishes. Are meat dishes processed or unprocessed? Most meat animals are fattened in feed lots before marketing. This artificially raises the fat content above that found in wild animals and is a form of processing.

There are 3 kinds of Omega oils:

For this reason commercial meat contains a large percentage of fat. For example, lean beef is about 20 to 30% fats. Earlier we stated that all fat/oils are considered processed food.

Omega 9

Also ask yourself how the meat was prepared. Baked or broiled meats have little or no added oils, but fried or grilled meats do have added oils that are processed. And battered meats have additional processed flour added. Therefore, the best meat choices would be lean cuts of fish, chicken, turkey and beef that are baked or broiled and prepared and served without sauces! Next in line are the starches (carbohydrates), for example rice, potatoes, pasta, noodles etc. Are starches processed or un-processed? Raw potato is totally unprocessed. Baked or boiled potato is slightly processed by the cooking. And mashed potato is even more processed. Remember processing changes the sugar chains within the starch (carbohydrate) making them more easily digested, absorbed into the blood stream and turned into fat! Rice growing in the field is unprocessed, but then it is processed during milling, and when cooked it is further processed. Raw pasta of course is made of processed flour. Cooking processes the pasta in proportion to the time cooked. Pasta cooked for only eight to twelve minutes is treated by the body as less processed than if it were cooked for 15 to 18 minutes. More about that in another session where you will learn some www.citypageskuwait.com

Omega 3 Omega 6 Omega 6 is found in corn, sunflower oil, and safflower oil. Omega 6 oils are very abundant in the western diet. Because Omega 6 is so plentiful in our diet, we need to decrease consumption of Omega 6 as we increase Omega 3 and Omega 9 oils. Omega 3 is found in high concentrations in: Deep water fish Egg yolk Flax seed Canola oil Omega 3 oil is the super good guy of the oil family and an increase in dietary Omega 3 will help balance the overabundance of Omega 6 in the western diet. Let’s go back to our salad bar analogy. Imagine you are at the meat section making your choice. Usually there are several fish dishes. Often there is one baked, one grilled and one fried variety. Which is the best choice? If you said baked go to the head of the class, and if you said baked salmon you deserve a gold star!

Diet/Health

Omega 9 is mono-unsaturated oil found in:

various grains. Grinding and milling processes the grain. Therefore all flour is processed and is consequently a storage category carbohydrate.

Now the bread was labeled as 100 calories per slice. But we see that each slice actually has 98.5 storage calories and 20 non-storage calories.

Avocados

Let’s see how the nutrition label on our whole grain bread further breaks down the ingredients:

Almonds

100 total calories per slice.

Omega 9 mono-unsaturated oil is thought to help prevent artery disease. But remember, all oils can cause obesity when eaten in excess quantity.

Total fat 2.5 grams (2.5 grams times 9 calories per gram = 22.5 fat calories).

Was the bread labeling helpful or misleading? It was misleading because most of the calories in the bread come from processed carbohydrate; a storage food which science tells us is equivalent to sugar.

Olive Peanuts

Imagine you are now at the salad section of the salad bar and you are trying to decide what dressing to put on your salad. What did you come up with? If you said diet or plain vinegar you get a gold star. But, if you said one teaspoon of olive oil you were thinking well ahead of the curve. Why? Because even though we want to minimize the oil in our diet, one tea spoon of olive oil is an okay choice since it is loaded with Omega 9 fatty acids and therefore helps prevent heart and artery disease! How much good vegetable and fish oil should be in the diet for a healthy heart? The American Heart Association has for years recommended a diet where 30% or less of total daily calorie is derived from oil. Pritikin, on the other hand, recommends no more than 10 to 15% of total daily calories from oil. In reality sciencebased evidence indicates that lower is better. A reasonable compromise would be 15 to 18 % of total daily calories from oil, excluding the counting of Omega 3, where more is always better. Oil in the diet is unavoidable. For example, of total lettuce calories, 14% are oil! Therefore, do not worry about not getting enough oil in the diet. Practically speaking it’s impossible to not get enough. There can be no weight gain unless a person deliberately chooses to eat an excess of storage foods. That is, unless a person purposely chooses to push the wrong hormone buttons. Putting Your New Knowledge to Use With Action Tools You Can Use

Action Idea #1 Read nutritional labels and apply your new science-

based knowledge. Ask yourself questions. 1. What is the first ingredient listed on the label? 2. How many grams of carbohydrate? 3. Is the carbohydrate processed or unprocessed? This last question is almost a trick. Why? Because if you are reading a label it is very likely most of the carbohydrate is processed because unprocessed foods do not require a label! Look in the fresh produce section of the grocery store. No labels there! Let me say that again. If it has a label it will likely be processed because most unprocessed foods do not require a label! For example, on the label of a loaf of bread advertised as whole multi grain the label will list the primary ingredient (the first ingredient on the list) as whole-wheat flour. We know that all flour is made by grinding and milling

Total carbohydrate 19 grams = 19 times 4 calories per gram = 76 calories from processed carbohydrate (We know this is processed because it is milled and ground grain). Sugar calories = 0. Manitol = 2 grams. Manitol is an alcohol that is sweet tasting, but not absorbed by the intestine. Manitol can cause diarrhea in some susceptible individuals. Protein = 6 grams 6 grams times 4 calories per gram = 24 protein calories. Now, in summary we have: 22.5 calories from fat 76 calories from processed carbohydrate 24 calories from protein. Note that this will add up to more than the stated 100 calories. This is not uncommon! Often the numbers simply do not add up.

So, all in all, is this a good food or a bad food? The answer depends upon our problems and our goals. In other words: 1. How much of this food we eat, and how often we eat it? 2. Do we have a weight problem? 3. Are we dieting for weight loss? If so, this food would not be a good food. 4. Are we dieting for weight maintenance? Then this food would be acceptable in small amounts so long as we understand that even small amounts increase our appetite and promote fat building.

Action Idea #2 Storage foods, processed carbohydrate and fat, push the wrong hormone buttons. Eat as little storage food as you can.Remember the salad bar line? How could you push the right hormone buttons as you select your food? • Salad with low cal. dressing.

From this we can see that even though this bread is advertised as sugar free and multi grained, each slice still contains:

• Apple or other fresh fruit for dessert.

Each slice contains 76 calories from processed carbohydrates that we call storage foods. Processed carbohydrate stimulates hunger hormones causing more eating behavior. Why do you think all restaurants give away bread? So that you will increase your appetite and order more food that does cost!

• Baked potato with no topping!

Each slice contains 24 calories from protein that we call nonstorage food, because it does not store as fat. Protein retards hunger. Each slice contains 22.5 calories are from fat, a storage food. Fat also retards hunger but stores readily as fat.

• Lean meat - especially broiled or baked, and deep water fish. • Steamed vegetables without cream or oil. • No bread. • Water or tea + artificial sweetener and lemon. Next month we will continue with tips on pushing the right hormone buttons to lose weight, become healthy and enjoy life more!

Motto: Promoting A Healthier Lifestyle Personal Message: Aesthetic is my favorite word.. Aesthetic is how I see the world

Dalal M. Al Nukhailan

Clinical Dietitian Diabetes Specialist/Pediatrics

No It’s Not Banned From Your Diet Now that you have been diagnosed as a diabetic, you and I will have a series of what I can call “dietary sessions.” In the very first session you will be introduced to food groups, Carbohydrates, Proteins and Fats. Carbohydrates and Fats will be the main focus as they influence the blood glucose level and our target is to keep the blood glucose level stable which we can manage by understanding how much and what type of food we should eat according to the type of medication and the level of physical activity.

What should I eat and what should I avoid eating ? These are the most common questions that come in mind whenever the word “Diabetes” is mentioned. Many people confuse the concept of food and may be hearing some misleading information from here and there so let’s clear it out by categorizing the food that

can reduce the incidence of blood clots because what they do is increase the HDL Cholesterol level that is the Good Cholesterol and that will make a smooth flow in the blood streams.

HOW much is Enough?

Carbohydrates: Rice, Pasta, Bread, Cereal, Legumes, Biscuits, whole wheat

Now that you are happy about that healthy snack, be wise and don’t over eat it and have negative impact on your bodies. Fats tend to have higher calories than proteins and carbohydrates so be moderate, let’s say about 2 walnuts = 6 almonds = 15 pistachios or you can make life easier and say 1 handful of mixed nuts and THAT’S IT. We wouldn’t want you to have extra weight gain resulting from fats that

Starchy Vegetables: Potato, Corn, Pumpkin, Peas

will affect your blood glucose level.

Dairy: Milk , Yogurt, Leban Whether it's skimmed, Low fat or full fat it has the same influence,

DOES that mean we should stop eating those?

affect blood glucose:

Fresh Fruits & Fruit Juices Others: Sugar, honey, sweets, cake, chocolate, ice-cream

However there is a very important food group that you can always make use of:

FATS I know that many people get scared of that word, or eat fats without even knowing about their presence, but like any other groups in our lives aspects, there are always some good and bad subgroups. So, what I’m saying is that we have some bad fats (hydrogenated, trans and saturated) such as those present in butter, frying oils, ghee, animal fats, some cookies candies cakes and chips. And there are some good fats (unsaturated fats) present in olive oil, fish, avocados, sunflower seeds and nuts. Foods from the Fats group does not affect the blood glucose level significantly. What I mean is that if a person eats anything from the fat group and checks his blood glucose level after, there will be no effect on blood glucose level directly. So make use of them and have some GOOD FAT SNACK such as NUTS. Nuts contain omega 3 and omega 6 oils that are very beneficial for the body and

www.citypageskuwait.com

Of course not, you can eat all of the above foods, after all a balanced nutritional diet must have all the food groups in a balanced way, but what you need to do is to be moderate and restrict your choices from those foods. The whole diabetic team will be involved to help you in achieving the best diabetes managements. Depending on the medication your doctor subscribes, your dietitian will guide you with how much is enough from your “Carb Count Menu.” All food is measured in a certain amount and it’s HOW MUCH WE NEED? that matters the most. As soon as you leave your dietitian, you will be guided and supervised to be your own master in choosing your diet smartly. You will have the freedom to choose, create, and combine your carbs and enjoy healthy meals and will always be asked to in return pay us a visit back just to make sure you are doing great 

Type 2 diabetes is much more common than type 1 diabetes, and accounts for around 90% of all diabetes worldwide.

5.

Reports of type 2 diabetes in children -previously rare - have increased worldwide. In some countries, it accounts for almost half of newly diagnosed cases in children and adolescents.

6.

A third type of diabetes is gestational diabetes. This type is characterized by hyperglycaemia, or raised blood sugar, which is first recognized during pregnancy.

7.

In 2005, 1.1 million people died from diabetes. The full impact is much larger, because although people may live for years with diabetes, their cause of death is often recorded as heart diseases or kidney failure.

8.

80% of diabetes deaths are now occurring in low- and middle-income countries.

Whenever possible, you'll want to couple these carbs with protein and/ or healthy fat. Beans (including black, white, navy, lima, pinto, garbanzo, soy, and kidney) are a winning combination of high-quality carbohydrates, lean protein, and soluble fiber that helps stabilize your body's blood-sugar levels and keeps hunger in check. Beans are also inexpensive, versatile, and virtually fat-free.

Studies have shown that eating a diet rich in whole grains and high-fiber foods may reduce the risk of diabetes by between 35 and 42 percent. An excellent source of both is heart-healthy oatmeal: It's packed with soluble fiber, which slows the absorption of glucose from food in the stomach — keeping blood-sugar levels under control. Top oatmeal with 1 to 2 tablespoons of chopped pecans, almonds, or walnuts to add protein and healthy fat, which stabilize blood sugars further. Plus, the nuts add great crunch and flavor to your morning meal.

Another outstanding source of lean protein is fresh fish. Choose an environmentally friendly variety like catfish, cod, or tilapia; all are mildflavored, white-fleshed fish that can be healthfully prepared by baking, grilling, or roasting. Pair fish with the high-quality carbs found in vegetables, lentils, or beans for another balanced meal combination that will keep your blood sugar from rising.

Fat-free yogurt naturally contains both high-quality carbohydrates and protein, making it an excellent food for slowing or preventing an unhealthy rise in blood sugar. Studies also show that a diet high in calcium from yogurt and other calcium-rich foods is associated with a reduced risk of type 2 diabetes. Be sure to stick to low-fat or nonfat brands; Greek nonfat yogurt is my favorite choice because it has twice as much protein as regular nonfat yogurt.

Almonds

Nonstarchy Vegetables

Wild Salmon

Egg Whites

Unsalted almonds provide a healthy, low-carb mix of monounsaturated fats plus magnesium, which is believed to be instrumental in carbohydrate metabolism. A large study out of Harvard University found that high daily magnesium intake reduced the risk of developing diabetes by 33 percent. Therefore, including more magnesium-rich foods like almonds, pumpkin seeds, spinach, and Swiss chard in your diet is a smart move.

Chock-full of vitamins, minerals, and fiber, nonstarchy vegetables (such as broccoli, spinach, mushrooms, and peppers) are an ideal source of high-quality carbohydrates. Because these low-calorie, nutrient-dense veggies have a low-impact on blood sugar, they're an integral component of your diabetes food plan. For most people (including those looking to lose weight), this is one food group that's okay to eat as much as you like!

Omega-3s from food help reduce your risk of heart disease, which is important for those with type 2 diabetes, whose risk of cardiovascular disease is already elevated. (Over time, high blood glucose levels can lead to increased deposits of fatty materials in blood vessels, which contributes to clogging of arteries.) Wild salmon or sardines are not only rich in omega 3s but also contain a healthy-fat-and-protein combination that slows the body's absorption of carbohydrates, keeping blood sugars on an even keel.

Rich in high-quality lean protein and low in carbs, egg whites are another healthy choice for controlling or preventing type 2 diabetes. One large egg white contains about 16 calories and 4 g of high-quality, filling protein, making egg whites a perfect food for blood sugar control, not to mention weight-loss or maintenance.

Avocado Avocado is high in monounsaturated fats, which are generally considered among the healthiest of fats. Researchers have found that a diet high in monounsaturated fats and low in low–quality carbs may improve insulin sensitivity. Monounsaturated fats also improve heart health — an especially important benefit for diabetics, who are at an increased risk for heart disease and stroke. Add a few thin slices of avocado to your sandwiches in place of mayonnaise, or mash a ripe avocado with cilantro, lime juice, and diced tomatoes for a delicious guacamole dip.

5 tips for staying healthy and weightgain free this holiday season! The season of festivities is upon us! We take every opportunity; be it Eid, Halloween, Thanksgiving, Hijri, Christmas and New Years to show our adoration for food. Decadent dishes are praised upon and social media apps such as Instagram and Twitter are excellent mediums for an eatery to showcase their latest piece-de-resistance. Spare no expense on the quality of ingredients used, we are talking the Real McCoy here when it comes to food in Kuwait, people. Hence it’s no surprise why people tend to gain weight during the holiday season. The average Joe tends to gain roughly around a pound during this festive time. However shedding the extra bulge is another story altogether. Thus as we get older, we do have a tendency to be heavier and one of the reasons why can be attributed to the holiday weight gain over the past several years (or decades) that hasn’t been dealt with. I’m sure it is no fun being a food Nazi yet at the same time, we don’t want to get carried away with gorging ourselves at the dinner table so much so that the Style Network has to revamp ones wardrobe. Aesthetics-aside, think about the health complications should you binge-eat during the holidays and then diet like crazy to counterbalance the weight gain. Dubbed “yo-yo dieting,” one of the most negative impacts on your health doing this is messing up your metabolism (this is what regulates your body’s ability to burn calories and what you consume efficiently). Thus what can we do to ensure that we can somewhat enjoy and partake in the festivities and at the same time ensure that we more or less are still active and healthy and devoid of potentially gaining weight? 1. Keep a food diary

4. Common sense prevails

5. Where’s my water bottle?

Writing down whatever you eat and drink is a great habit to get into as most of the time we don’t realize the quantity of food and liquids consumed! Every little thing has a calorie value so even though you THINK you might be having little cheat-meal moments here and there, by keeping a food journal, you get to see what your true food volume consumption is like. Lastly by keeping a food diary, you are less inclined to stray from eating well.

If you decide that you’re going to enjoy the holiday treats, do so with a touch of common sense. If you’re going to have pastas, have them but opt for tomatobased sauces as opposed to rich white cream ones. Love the spread and varied choices at dinner? Sample them but start off with soups and salads to fill you up before hand. Itching to try that chocolate cake? Do so but a portion size that’s larger than the size of your palm will eventually add on to the girth of your hips. Get my point?

If you struggle with being disciplined when it comes to food, I sometimes suggest to clients to bring a water bottle with them wherever they go. By having it in your sight, you’re more inclined to sipping it throughout the day. This is great cause not only does it hydrate you, but more often than not, people tend to mistake thirst for hunger (a great way to detect this is to drink a glass and wait for 20 minutes to see if it’s hunger or thirst your body is crying out for). Keeping a water bottle with you also ensures you get your daily recommended water intake and in a hot country such as K-town, benefits the condition of your skin and immune system!

2. The Plus 1 rule Dessert is a must come holiday time. Yes you heard right. What’s Eid and Hijri without the lovely petite little Arabic sweets? Thanksgiving is no Thanksgiving without sweet-potato pie. Festivities occur for a reason so when it comes to clients sampling a few sweet treats, as a trainer I understand clients wanting to try them. Fitness doesn’t have to be all about eating clean and training mean. If you do want to try that decadent dessert, do so in moderation. I also advocate my clients with my Plus1 rule, whereby if you have that extra one sweet treat, add one extra cardio and weight session to your week. That way, you kind of counter balance the extra calories!

3. Coincide your cheat meal Getting fitness results is all about routine and planning your meal moments. With eating clean, I advocate having that one cheat meal a week. Studies have shown that it can benefit you to adhering to eating clean and spiking your metabolism. If you know when your next visit to the dewaniyah and that the boys there will be having a food soiree, plan your cheat meal to coincide with this visit. By doing so, you will be able to enjoy the evening and feel guilt-free doing so. November 2012

Society/Animal Care

Shares a kinship with animals of all sizes and species. Life mission is to care for Kuwait’s forgotten animals, spread awareness and empathy. Views herself as a risk taker with a coffee addiction.

Ayeshah Al-Humaidhi

Why do animal shelters exist? It’s a simple enough question, but it invites a myriad of answers. Shelters often receive a plethora of criticism when it comes to the fate of homeless animals, and they are easy targets, since they receive animals and must then choose what to do next. The best shelters make the welfare of their animals their top priority. They are therefore obliged to take a very few animals or to provide humane euthanasia to unadoptable animals. Those shelters that choose not to euthanize and to take in relatively few animals are called ‘no-kill’ shelters. Shelters that take in a large number of animals and euthanize unadoptable animals are called open-door shelters because they never turn an animal away. This is where the controversy begins.

S

o why do shelters need to exist? The primary source of unwanted pets in the world is irresponsible pet owners; followed by dog fighting rings, and back-yard breeders. The universal constant for all shelters is that there are literally millions of homeless pets in the world. Each shelter therefore must face very difficult realities to help as many animals as possible. They can only do their best. Where do the animals that end up at K’S PATH come from? The first group of unwanted pets come directly from people’s homes. There are a large variety of explanations for this, ranging from the serious (family emergency) to the ridiculous (my cat wants to get married and a shelter is the best place to pick a spouse). Excuses that come to mind also include ‘I’ve had my cat for 5 years and now I’m allergic,’ ‘I’ve had my dog for 11 year but I don’t want him any more,’ ‘I bought this puppy for my kids but they don’t like her anymore,’ and ‘my cat claws my furniture; can’t you find a home with cheaper furniture?’There are legitimate reasons to give up an animal, but for every one of these reasons, shelters get about 50 excuses. The simple, direct, plain, and awful truth is that adopting, buying, or rescuing a pet is a lifetime commitment, not a passing hobby. Pet ownership is a ‘for better or for worse until death parts you’ arrangement. Another large source of unwanted dogs and cats is from breeding. Unwanted litters account for an incredible number of unwanted pets. If you consider that a single pair of intact cats can produce 11,606,011 offspring within 9 years, it’s not hard to see how accidental litters account for so many unwanted pets. Granted, the average pet owning household never ends up with hundreds or thousands of pets, but with cat litters of 4-5, even one unexpected litter puts a strain on local shelters. With a community of 3 million, www.citypageskuwait.com

there are thousands of unwanted cats every year and a similar number of dogs. The solution is simple: spay and neuter your pets. In a world where millions upon millions of unwanted pets are euthanized, exterminated, and culled every year, sterilization isn’t a choice; it’s a responsibility. One argument we often hear is that it is the animal’s right to have babies. This line of thinking is illogical. The global meat industry forcibly impregnates literally billions of animals every year while endangered species vanish from the Earth. As pet owners, our responsibility is to manage the animals in our lives for their benefit. A dog does not sit at home thinking about how it wants to have babies. For these animals it is not a choice, but rather an instinctual reaction to a change in hormone levels in the body. If you have ever seen a young 8 monthold mother dog trying to raise her puppies and see the stress and exhaustion on her you wouldn’t say she chose to be in that situation. The same is true of animals bred and bred until their bodies are used up.As humans, we possess the ability to reason and to make choices based upon information. When we take on the responsibility for a pet, we accept the

obligation to make decisions on their behalf. Shelters exist, not as a form of population control, but as an alternative for homeless pets. The solution then is not to condemn shelters trying to keep up with the high demand for additional space, but to prevent the need for a shelter in the first place. For that, all pet owners need to take responsibility for their animals by providing lifetime care and by spaying and neutering. Are you ready for your first pet, a new, or an additional pet? Consider adopting. Start your journey at www.kspath.org

SKYFALL James Bond is back! Roger Deakins, ASC, BSC joins Her Majesty’s secret service with Skyfall, the 23rd James Bond adventure.

British secret agent James Bond (Daniel Craig) returns to the big screen in Skyfall, which reteams director Sam Mendes and cinematographer Roger Deakins, ASC, BSC, and is the first film in the franchise to be shot digitally. “You know the rules of the game,” M tells Bond near the start of Skyfall, “You’ve been playing it long enough!” Fifty years to be exact, an anniversary that makes the 23rd entry in the world’s most durable franchise both a cue for nostalgia and a chance to reassess. It would have been easy for director Sam Mendes to wallow in the former, tick all the right boxes and play to the gallery. Instead he poses questions. Who is Bond? What is his role? Is he a man with a future, or an irrelevant relic trapped in the past? It’s a daring move to reintroduce Bond after a four-year hiatus as a man whose best days may be all behind him. But then Skyfall is nothing if not audacious, deconstructing 007 and the iconography www.citypageskuwait.com

he comes with in a way that is constantly, consistently surprising. A blistering pre-credits sequence, in which Daniel Craig destroys half of Istanbul in a quest to recover sensitive information from an enemy operative, initially suggests Bond is back on track after the stuttering blip that was Quantum Of Solace. No sooner are we settled, though, than James is shot in error by one of his own (Naomie Harris), plunging from the roof of a moving train into Daniel Kleinman-designed titles filled with skulls, tombstones and other totems of death. Bond survives, of course – he always does. But when he comes back to life he is far from his best, Craig’s unshaven chops and

41 bloodshot eyes betraying a man whose heart isn’t in it (if it ever was). It doesn’t help that Judi Dench’s M also looks set for the scrap heap, or that the new Q (Ben Whishaw) is a techno-nerd barely half his age. (“You still have spots!” sneers Bond contemptuously during their first encounter in the National Gallery.) Put through his paces after some Mediterranean down-time involving scorpion-baiting drinking games and post-shag Heineken, 007 can hardly manage a chin-up before collapsing in a heap. He can’t even dangle from the undercarriage of an ascending elevator without wincing in discomfort. If Casino Royale was Bond finding his footing, Skyfall is him remembering where he left it - a clever turnaround made all the more effective by giving 007 an adversary who, for much of the film, is crossing the finish line while Jimmy’s putting on his trainers. With his shock of blond hair, dodgy dentistry and vengeful M fixation, Javier Bardem’s Silva is that rarest of creations: a cyber-terrorist who genuinely terrifies. But he also has a playful side; witness the literally thigh-rubbing glee he brings to one stand-out interrogation scene. It's far from the only sexually charged moment; cue a steamy shower clinch with Bérénice Marlohe’s femme fatale Sévérine, plus some saucy banter with Harris’ Eve that positively fizzes with winking innuendo. But in line with Craig’s summer assignment at Buckingham Palace, the real Bond girl is of a more seasoned vintage: Dame Judi herself, here evolving from 007’s testy taskmistress into a surrogate mother he will kill to protect. At one point – possibly Skyfall’s gutsiest – Mendes has the two decamp to rural Scotland, there to ruminate on Bond’s past and how M took advantage of it. The casting of Dench was always a master-stroke, but it has taken seven outings, and one Oscar-winning filmmaker, for her to be exploited properly. Mendes’ ambitions, though commendable, don’t always fit the material. The Bond series has lasted half a century without referencing Shakespeare, Tennyson and JMW Turner, so why shoehorn them in now? Thankfully, they don’t interfere with the standard Bondian trappings, Skyfall boasting all the glamour, excitement and exoticism we have come to expect and then some. A floating Macau casino, complete with firework display and komodo dragons, supplies a perfect setting for cocktails, fisticuffs and Live And Let Die in-jokes, while Bardem’s hide-out - a deserted island full of crumbling masonry and broken statues - has all the grandeur of Blofeld’s volcano with none of the impracticality. Thanks to lensman Roger Deakins and production designer Dennis Gassner, a Shanghai skyscraper rippled by neon advertising provides a brilliantly atmospheric backdrop for a nocturnal assassination. A splendid mid-section in London, meanwhile, spurns the city’s overexposed architecture for a chase beneath its surface, Bond pursuing Silva via sewer, tunnel and Tube while still finding time to crack the odd funny. Indeed, for all its intimations of mortality and harping on obsolescence, Skyfall is more often than not a hoot, Craig having the confidence at last to lace his Bond’s killer instinct with a bone-dry wit and wry nonchalance. The scene where he contemplates utilising one of the series' oldest and most famous gizmos is a perfectly judged grace note, while an appearance from Albert Finney near the end of the picture exudes warmth and good humour. It all adds up to the 007 adventure we’ve been waiting for: a flawlessly assembled thrill ride with a cast to die for and a nakedly emotional undertow. Happy birthday, Mr Bond. November 2012

The Lovely Bones This

title might be bit familiar to most of you, as it is a title of one of the well-made movies based on great stories. If you haven’t read the book yet, then I recommend you do before you watch the movie. The lovely bones is a story based in the 1970s about a family faced with tragedy when their fourteen years old daughter gets murdered. The story is told in the words of a fourteen year old girl named Susie Salmon (like the fish). Susie tells her story in her words and thoughts, through her own eyes, her way of seeing her heaven, while looking down on her family struggling to stay together. Alice (author) takes the lives around people that knew Susie personally or people who knew of her and one by one you will see how each of their lives were affected by Susie’s murder. We see her family that was so close, drift apart and gets torn into pieces. We see friendships that are formed out of the blue. All that they have in common is Susie’s death. And on the other hand, Susie is looking down each and every one of them, trying to lead them on their right paths. The book is written in easy English and the scenery shifts from the world of the living to Susie’s heaven. It has an excellently executed narrative concept; it will keep the reading riveted from beginning to the end. Alice Sebold is an American novelist who wrote total of three novels including The Lovely Bones. She lives in California with her husband who is also a novelist named Glen David Gold. She shares some of the main character’s feelings and thoughts because she too, like Susie, was raped. That’s what made this book so real. It is one of the most emotional books I have ever read. It’s not emotions that made you want to cry, but you could feel the quietness of Susie’s heaven, the pain of Susie’s family and her www.citypageskuwait.com

Next Month...

friends. Sometimes it’s gentle and other times it’s over whelming. Alice’s total literature history combines only three books; Lucky (1999), The Lovely Bones (2002) and The Almost Moon (2007). Only The Lovely Bones was adapted into a motion picture in 2009, directed by famous director Peter Jackson and starring famous names such as Mark Wahlberg, Rachel Weisz, Susan Sarandon and Stanley Tucci. Reading the lovely bones, it might give each reader a different feel or a conclusion. However, it definitely showed that death has to be accepted and endured as it comes. That’s why we should always be open and honest with each other, as we don’t know when it might take one of us forever. This book isn’t about a little girl death or rape, but it is how tragedies bring people together or tear them apart. In the end it’s all up to them. And as Susie says at the end of the book, “I wish you all a long and happy life.”

Our lovely readers, next issue I will be featuring a book by Paulo Coelho called, The Winner Stands Alone. It’s one of his latest books. If any of you have read it, please email me what you think about it so we can share it with the other readers. It’s a book that will surprise you if you have read other books by Paulo Coelho. As it is yet the most different one out of the rest of his books. In this book Coelho brought his remarkable gift of storytelling to the darker side of celebrity, wealth and excess – and how the world we live in can distort the truth in our hearts. Beth Ditto, Michelle Tea

A gleeful and exhilarating tale of global conspiracy, complex code-breaking, hightech data visualization, young love, rollicking adventure, and the secret to eternal life— mostly set in a hole-in-the-wall San Francisco bookstore.

A raw and surprisingly beautiful coming-of-age memoir, Coal to Diamonds tells the story of Mary Beth Ditto, a girl from rural Arkansas who found her voice. Born and raised in Judsonia, Arkansas—a place where indoor plumbing was a luxury, squirrel was a meal, and sex ed was taught during senior year in high school (long after many girls had gotten pregnant and dropped out) Beth Ditto stood out

Names From the Past Part II

That’s the problem with jet lag; no matter how much you sleep or how you try to avoid it, it will always be waiting for you. Like a friend waiting to greet you at the airport, Jetlag will grab on to you tightly and be by your side for the first days upon your arrival. And at 2 AM, Jetlag was definitely not leaving Hakim’s side anytime soon.

T

hankfully his room was equipped with a coffee maker and enough coffee to last him throughout the night. Gazing out the window into the view of the Arabian Gulf, Hakim took short sips from the Styrofoam cup. The Gulf was eerily calm as if it was staring back at him. I knew you would come back someday, it was telling him. The scent in the air, the sound of the water and the Arabian moon all brought back forgotten childhood memories. Memories that have been stowed away in the deepest part of his soul under lock and key. It’s the place he thought to himself. The environment he was in was slowly unlocking the vault that would force Hakim to face what he had been trying to escape from all these years. The last Hakim could remember about this place was that he was getting ready to leave it behind.

* College was never on his agenda when Hakim was in his early twenties. But then again, his agenda did not include being haunted by memories of his dead brother every minute of his life. It’s not like Hakim needed an excuse to leave and start a new life. At 21 years-old he was quite capable of doing whatever he pleased. Money wasn’t a problem either. He was able to save up a pretty penny working long school nights and weekends. In fact, he had enough in his savings for full year tuition. With only a few months until the start of the new semester, Hakim had just enough time to tie up loose ends and bid farewell to those he would not be seeing (since Hakim was never going to return to this place). But those lose ends were never attended to and the farewells were never bade. He couldn’t even get himself to come face-to-face with Jacob – or Jay as he liked to be called.

Jay was the only person Hakim was able to call a friend and was the only one he was able to connect with after the death of Ezra. Jay was positive, funny, confident and outgoing. Characteristics Hakim knew he himself did not possess. Maybe being polar opposites was what made them friends and kept their friendship interesting. But no matter how close they were and how much Hakim cared, he made up his mind to not see Jay. Saying goodbye to another friend was something he refused to go through once again. For Hakim, nothing was more emotionally draining than spending time with Ezra’s family. They treated Hakim as their own. Loved him as their own. But as others would have welcomed this love, Hakim rejected it. In fact, if it wasn’t for some moral sense of obligation, the funeral would have been the last time Ezra’s family and Hakim where within the same vicinity. But this time was different. Ezra was not there because of a sense of guilt or obligation but was there to see them for the last time. He wasn’t sure how he was going to tell them. No matter how much he rehearsed, he knew it would not happen as planned. As expected, Ezra’s family welcomed him and asked him to stay for dinner which Hakim accepted without objection.

let them know how much he loved them. Tell them that his decision had nothing to do with them and that if he would have been given a choice, he would have chose them as his family. Courage overcame him as he walked up to the front door and gently placed his palm on the knob. He could hear the family as they were cleaning up the table. I love you he whispered and gently kissed the door. The door that gave him Ezra. The door that acted as a portal of love and friendship. The tears came forward with a vengeance as he slowly walked away.

* The Styrofoam cup he was holding was no longer hot. The Arabian Gulf still calm. Hakim came here without a plan. He did not think this through. All he knew was that this is where he had to be. His thoughts moved on from Ezra’s family and focused on Jay, as the moon disregarded him and focused its attention elsewhere. ...to be continued next month

It was different this time. Whatever walls he would usually erect before seeing them had been taken down. He enjoyed the feast that Ezra’s mother thoughtfully put together and the discussions he was having with the family. There were a few opportunities during dinner for Hakim to actually discuss the reason he was visiting and tell them that in less than a week he would be leaving never to return. But he didn’t. Instead, the night ended as any other night with simple hugs, kisses and see you soons. Hakim paused as he walked away from the house. His eyes welled up with tears as he heard the front door close behind him. A part of him wanted to go back, hug every one of them and November 2012

Literature/Short Stories

Nada Faris is an award-winning poet who writes articles and short fiction in local magazines and newspapers. Her articles and short fiction appeared in Kuwait Times Newspaper and several magazines in Kuwait.

Nada Faris

MYSTERY DIET She was stalking me. I stood with my back to the wall counting the seconds until she walked away. One Mississippi two Mississippi three Mississippi. I poked an inch of my head around the corner, and slowly, as if my life depended on it, protruded more until my eyes were exposed. “Nada!” Damn. “Oh, hey, I thought it was you.” “Are you hiding from anyone?” She looked behind her, searching the Avenues’s crowd for nothing in particular. “No. No. I was just on my way to—” To what? I didn’t know. I was a terrible liar. I let the end of my incomplete sentence hang between us like the Berlin Wall. My cousin, whom I hadn’t seen for years, retained her smile. “Um . . .” I still had nothing to say. I couldn’t tell her I was avoiding her and I couldn’t make up anything else. What could I say? ‘I’m shopping for clothes, you know me, a self-proclaimed fashionista?’ She’d have a better chance believing me if I told her I was Maradona, The Hand of God. “You lost weight.” She cut to the chase. I knew it was coming. This was why I avoided her in the first place. “Thanks. I guess.” “What are you taking?” “What do you mean? Like pills?” She nodded and I threw my hands in the air defensively, “I don’t take pills. Honest. It’s football practice.” My cousin nodded slowly, her smile was still strained, unchanging. “Football?” She asked. “Yeah.” “Nada you haven’t played football for three months,” she said as matter of fact. “How did—” “I read your blog.” “Oh . . .” Deflated I thought of something else. I needed desperately to

www.citypageskuwait.com

touch up on my lying. “Um . . . Yeah. I’ve been walking the dogs. They’re not mine, you know, before you jump in and tell me you know we don’t keep dogs in the house. They belong to my friend, Sherwood. We walk them together. I guess that’s how I lost the weight.” My cousin with the unwavering smile nodded again. “Do you mean Surgeon?” “Yeah. How did—” “Twitter. You haven’t exercised with Surgeon since he went missing three months ago. I’ve been keeping track of your development since I saw your interview in Bazaar Magazine. Nice poetry book by the way.” “Thanks,” I said shamefully. “So how did you lose the weight? Last time we met you were . . . well let’s just say you’re back to human shape.” I bit my lower lip. Then I chewed it. Damn. Damn, damn, damn. For a brief moment I considered telling her I joined a gym, but as soon as I thought of it I discarded the idea. She stalks me. Not just physically. Digitally as well! Of course she’d have read my conversation with the Dalai Lama in which I express my utmost refusal to join a gym. “Pills,” I exhaled. “You just said—” “I lied. I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have. I’ve been taking pills.” “Which ones?” “Um . . . I can’t remember their names now. They’re Chinese. You can get them from that store, there. They sell protein shakes and all. Just ask for the Chinese weight loss pills. They’re famous. And good luck with your weight. I’ve got to go now.” I patted her shoulder affectionately and slipped away. I turned around once to make sure she wasn’t chasing me anymore. When I saw her walk hesitantly toward the health shop, I bolted in the other direction seeking the nearest escalator. I let out a sigh of relief when I reached the top. I made my way through obnoxious teenagers stood in front of Baroue. I grinned. Finally. I greeted Jud, the employee who was stationed at the cashier, high-fived Chuck, who stood by the virtual car racing, and walked triumphantly towards my mystery diet: Dance Dance Revolution. I swiped my card, chose my song, and cracked my fingers before stepping on the dancing pad. The speakers blasted “Ready?” and I yelled “Hell yes!” That’s when my cousin cried, “You’ve got to be freaking kidding me!” from behind. Damn.

PEER PRESSURE It had begun. The Nightingales had gone, Hollow and empty of song. But we didn't notice, or miss Their beauty and grace, For we were all gathered at Kaifan park one day; Crawling like criminals in the dark we stayed. We all knew about it. But at the park, that day, we saw it for real. One of my friends had bought it. And yes, he was aware that it was illegal, But he tried to convince us that it shouldn't have been. He evinced a leftist vision, About freedom of expression, And then he tried it when no one was looking. He prepared the equipment, And stuffed it all in.

They grew it in this school, They sold it in this school, They bought it in this school! All of it illegal. But do you think they cared? They would joke and almost choke with laughter. They felt invincible, And after, They asked me to join them. My friend said, “Come on man, don't be trippin' We're doing something good here, Listen, don't let the world confuse you, Or use you, or abuse you, Cause you got the liberty to be whatever we wanted to be. And you're full grown man, I said come on.”

My heart was pounding and almost burst from my chest, I looked around in fear, Close to tears, But I didn't leave…

So I did what they did. And I know I may sound like a hypocrite, But I'm here to attest to it. You see, I liked it.

Why didn't I leave?

In fact, The more I tried it, The more I realized I couldn't deny it! It was ingenious! And I don’t want to hear your negations, Cause I'll stand here imperious.

Because I was more interested in being cool, Than being caught. That's when it began, And where it began, But soon after it came to school This school! I didn't want to take any part of it, I had my education to worry about, My poetry participations, And most importantly, My reputation.

And so it evolved.

I think everybody should do it. You heard me, Go tell your friends and their parents, That I said grab some seeds, grab a shovel, Find a fertile ground and pummel. And like my friends at Kaifan park, Plant delicious fruits and vegetables to reduce the effects of global warming! Cause it sure as hell is alarming, and illegal, But we've all got to do our part to stay green Even if it means, planting trees on school grounds!

They began to grow it, And soon after, They began to sell it!

What? Y'all thought I was talking about drugs? Suckers!

But others did.

Interviews

At what age did you start singing? I began singing professionally at the age of 5. I was the youngest in a Classical Lebanese Choir headed by Maestro Salim Sahab.

Who were and are your biggest musical influences? I grew up listening to Magida El Roumi and to this day she is still on my list of favourites, that’s why I chose her song ‘Tiri Tiri Ya Asfoura’ when I was a child to sing in Italy. I can’t say it’s just one artist that has influenced me, especially that I live in Canada, there are so many amazing musicians/singers that you are exposed to from many different genres.

Tell us about your experience while performing in Italy? The experience was surreal because I was in Italy representing Lebanon singing for peace while Lebanon was in turmoil state. It was an honour knowing that I am representing Lebanon and especially the Arab World as I was the first child from that region to participate in this festival after 29 years of its inception. I had no expectations but to do my best and have fun.

How was your experience performing for charities during the war? It was bitter sweet because at times it was terrifying knowing there are bombs going off in the distance but then again I had packed venues coming to watch me perform and ultimately I was making a positive difference so it was worth the risks.

What are the achievements and awards that you have won? While I was young I was recognized by the President of the country for my humanitarian work. I was chosen to represent the Children of the World for ‘peace’ in Bulgaria as well as asked to open and close the Gioffoni Film Festival in Italy, which is like the European Academy Awards. As for swimming, I had won medals and trophies but unfortunately didn’t get to the level that I had hoped for due to my back injury.

How is swimming connected to singing? I mean what talent did you discover first? I used to sing and hum under water while I swam so many kilometers in practice! My parents gave us the opportunity of swimming and singing since an early age. I liked both professions and was lucky to be successful at both. When I got to Canada swimming took over because of the commitment for practices and swim meets. I enjoyed the hard training and racing, it was very satisfying. I always knew I’d return to singing but swimming is one of those sports that you can’t pick up after years to race. Racing in swimming has limitations in age and timing in comparison to singing. At that time, I concentrated on swimming while I was still practicing singing and playing piano.

Tell me about your achievements in Swimming? I was third in Canada at the age of 11. I got my National Standings at the age of 13, surprisingly after

www.citypageskuwait.com

I fractured my back. I retired in 1997 but then was asked to return to the pool to represent Lebanon at the Pan Arab Olympics where I won 5 Bronze Medals.

this your style?

Tell us about the accident you had while swimming?

Where have you performance so far?

I was at school during Physical Education class and we were playing Hand Ball. I jumped up to catch the ball and got side swiped in the air by an opposing team member and went flying then landed on the ground on my tail bone. They found out I had two fractures a year later!

I came to know that you are also a Computer Programmer Like me? Is that true? Yes, I used to do Computer Programming. I worked in the field for over 5 years but then went back into working on my music. Music took precedence as they are both time consuming and I really wanted to return to my passion. I now enjoy working with photo editing a lot so I have my Adobe Photoshop Associate Certification.

Why did you choose computer programming? It’s so boring.... You program and you think it’s boring??? I actually don’t think it’s boring at all. It is so cool creating code from scratch then watching your whole program/ project/website whatever it is come together.

Did you make a career in computers or work in that field? I would say I work in the field. I am still somewhat involved with it on a part time basis but not doing the core programming. I design, consult or test, so I’d say the easier part of it.

How many albums have you launched so far? I worked on an independent 2 version album years ago but didn’t end up releasing it, although I had a major distribution company wanting to pick it up. I guess that inner gut positive feeling wasn’t there with that work and now I know I made the right decision. Saying that, this is my first official debut album that I am releasing and I am 100% satisfied with the product and especially the people that I have worked with to get this work complete.

Tell us about your new songs that just released… I heard them several times and really loved them? Thank you for your positive review. It’s nice that you aren’t judgmental of the work and accepting of the different style. I feel like I have two homes, one in the Middle East and one in North America. I am blessed to experience both regions so my music is an influence of both worlds. The music contains a mix of Arabic and North American melodies with orchestral scores written by Michel Fadel. All the Middle Eastern instruments where played in the Middle East and the electronic beats were infused from North America. I have Classical Arabic, Lebanese, Egyptian and English lyrics on the album.

Your music has a very western touch. Is

Yes this is. It’s a fusion of the two worlds that I can call home.

travelled

for

I sang in the Middle East, Europe and North America. I’m hoping that this album will allow me to go worldwide!

Who writes your lyrics? On this English version I wrote the lyrics with a good friend, her name is Christie Smith. On the Arabic version, Kamal Kubbeissy has his share of lyrics.

When are you planning to launch your complete new album? November 13, 2012 is the debut release date. I just shot a video clip and that will be out early November.

Your message for your fans in Kuwait? Thank you for being fans of mine and accepting my music since the days of “Vola, Palombella!” I hope that you will continue supporting me and my music and I would love to visit Kuwait and perform for my fans there. Spread the word 

Your message for us at CityPages magazine? I appreciate you taking the time to reach out to me and for supporting my passion. I love your magazine and keep doing the great job that you are doing.

Review/Restaurant

HANHUM Experience Kuwait’s history of rich, hot food at the Hanhum restaurant, where tradition mingles with modernity for an unforgettable meal. All the Kuwaiti favourites have a refreshing twist and are featured in quality ingredients, undertaken by a skilled Chef. The word ‘Hanhum’ is an old Kuwaiti greeting, said by a person who enters a room of people enjoying a meal. The undoubtedly hungry people reply by saying, “Winta minhum,” cordially inviting the greeter to join them. We aim to invite people to enjoy our food, which we present in a contemporary yet traditional Kuwaiti way.

Relish the tantalizing, taste-exuberant dishes of Kuwait at the Hanhum restaurant. Locals will recognize the word as a Kuwaiti greeting said by a person who enters a room full of people enjoying a hearty meal. He soon receives an invitation to join the happy feast. The restaurant invokes these sentiments of hospitality and cordiality in its hosting of diners, a sincere nature is the foundation of the restaurant. www.citypageskuwait.com

Restaurant/Review

Hanhum is located among the bright lights of Kuwait City at Al Hamra Luxury Center, Hanhum restaurant is an attraction with its own charm. It has a very natural, earth-inspired theme; making it relaxed and inviting. Large windows offer a pleasant view of modern Kuwait while diners relish traditional Kuwaiti dishes -- an interesting meeting of past and present. Sleek and minimalist; the decor comprises of wood square panelling, large rounded light bulbs, plain square tables and curved chairs. In a cool way, they have played with shapes to create a ‘Here and Now’ setting, as they serve traditional Kuwaiti home cooking in a contemporary manner. The restaurant is designed with a swanky

crunch, so we sampled the salads that were a flavourful blend of textures and colours. Jarjeer Salad, a mix of green rocket leaves, red onions and pine nuts with feta cheese to give it a savoury edge. The second dish was a succulent Baidiyan Bilroub Salad of fried aubergines, chopped garlic, chick peas, parsley and saturated in yogurt and lemon juice to infuse a bit of sharpness. It must be mentioned Hanhum’s choice of mouth-watering speciality sandwiches: Diyay o Zanjabeel (a blend of diced chicken pieces, garlic and ginger wrapped in Tanour Bread), Jibin Glass (cheese spread in Tawa Bread) and Asal O Gaymar (honey and thick cream for a sweet Tawa Bread). Onto the main course,

yet open style. The menu lists many scrumptious meals prepared from fresh ingredients, so each dish retains their natural flavours and nutrients. The pictures of delicious food surrounding you leave you thinking incessantly on what to select. We met with Chef Besim Kurtlaj, who is responsible for the delicious food diners love. We requested his recommendation for the best dishes to experience true Kuwaiti food. The food looked incredibly delectable on our platter, in particular the classy presentation. We started on the appetizers; Ibraq, aromatic rice wrapped in vine and the Kuwaiti style Kubba’t Aish, made from mashed potatoes and minced meat in a fried round crust. Speaking of round, Kubba’t Butat Biljibin’s crust is filled with mashed potatoes and cream cheese, a favourite tasty combination. We wanted a little

the prime Kuwaiti dishes were spectacular; our taste buds were stimulated with the intensity of the union of flavours. Imrabyan, beautiful golden-brown shrimp cooked in basmati rice and topped with sautéed onions; Margoog is a true Kuwaiti dish with a robust, distinctive flavour; the stew contains meat, vegetables and thin dough slices. The fish-based dish, Fillet Hamour Magli was a Hanhum speciality; fried fish served with a delectable mixture and a zesty sauce. Our team couldn’t resist the appealing desert menu - the sweet goodness of chocolate cake drenched in Nutella; the taste of Kakaw cake was transcendent, especially heightened by the tartness of fresh berries. Hanhum is ‘the’ place to discover the essence of traditional Kuwaiti cuisine.

From this point I had it clear what I wanted to be - A Fashion Designer. So the dream began. My first destination was in Milan at the “Instituto De Moda Burgo” where I completed studies and received my degree. When I graduated I thought of Lebanon as the capital of fashion and style. I opened a small boutique, and recently LAB 8 Kuwait. Now it's been a journey of 10 years in the business doing what I do best "design"

The brand Everybody is asking why LAB 8? What does it stand for?. “8" symbolizes the figure of the woman. It also means infinity, and Lab is the kitchen, behind the scene. So basicly LAB 8 has a philosophy. We build an image, not only clothing.

MY DEMOGRAPHIC I aim the Fashion conscious, never related to age nor stage.

FASHION STYLE Well thats a tricky question. Back in the days, trends used to be fixed and prolonged. Now a days every thing can be a trend from classy couture to trashy. So I can make a whole retro collection that inspires me from an old hollywood movie or vise-versa I could be inspired by a rock and roll song and do a whole rock chic collection. So what I am trying to see is that Fashion is a global international concept, where everything could be considered art. As a slave to fashion I tend to embrace international trends in term of general colors & cuts. I'm a trend setter not a trend follower yet respect the general lines.

ON GOING PLANS -Fashion designer -Fashion critic & analyzer -Blogger -Social media freak -Opening specialized bridal boutique -Future collaborations with celebrities -Fashion Editor in Zafaf magazine -Collaboration with Asnan Clinic -Textile computerized heavy machinery the first in the region.

The Shocking Truth Of The Psychological Effects Of Socks You may not know it, but the colour of your socks leaves a lasting effect on everybody you meet. At work, in public, in relationships - the crucial first impression left by an ill-advised sock purchase could affect your everyday life. Sock subscription service Socked.co.uk has conducted new research that explains just what your socks say about you, and concludes that a considered choice of sock will put you streets ahead of the crowd. Mark Hall, Gentleman Creation Officer at socked.co.uk, said: "Colours are used to help create your persona, your desired image; and wearing a particular colour of socks will influence the way others relate to you. Pick the right colour, and you're already winning. Pick the wrong colour, and you could just come across in the wrong way." "Our research shows that the only colour a gentleman should wear on his feet is black. Don't take chances with the wrong coloured socks."

What do your socks say about you? Black

in the shins more than any social group.

Worn by: Gentlemen. Well-dressed villains

Brown

The classic black speaks authority, power, sophistication and mystery. Stylish and timeless, black socks remain the first and only choice for the gentleman around town.

Worn by: Gardeners. Librarians (male and female)

White Worn by: Eighties throwbacks. Commercial radio DJs While white usually portrays innocence and purity, in a sock it is a mortal sin, especially when worn with open-toed sandals. White socks are also the tell-tale sign of the gym-goer too lazy to get changed after a work-out. Avoid whitesockers - they are up to no good. Grey Worn by: Bankers. Vicars Neither black nor white, neither here nor there, grey socks portray a dull life built on compromise, boredom and poor laundry skills. You may put your trust a man in grey socks, but could live to regret it. Red Worn by: Would-be Casanovas. Politicians Confrontational, emotionally intense, and quick to anger. Red cars are most the popular choice of stolen car, red socks are not. Yellow Worn by: Attention-seekers. The office joker When he's not wearing his Homer Simpson socks, the joker thinks yellow socks are cool. The most difficult colour for the eye to take in, people in yellow socks get inadvertently kicked www.citypageskuwait.com

Good, solid and reliable people, brown betrays a serious down-to-earth personality that is quite happy to sit in the background like a wallflower. There is probably a brown-socker within ten feet of you now, and you haven't noticed. Blue Worn by: Traffic wardens. Doctors Blue projects an image of success and security. High street store signs are often blue, as this tells the consumer they are a dynamic, growing brand. You can certainly trust a blue sock wearer with your life, but with the nagging doubt that they don't quite have the confidence to wear black. Gold Worn by: Lottery winners. Premier League footballers Gold signifies success, achievement and extravagant triumph, yet is entirely impractical

in everyday footwear. A sign of conspicuous consumption, no true gentleman - whatever his wealth - would flaunt his bank balance with so little class. Day-Glo Worn by: Cyclists, Nobody over the age of eleven 'See and be seen' we say, and we are all for cyclists wearing fluorescent colours as part of their everyday bike kit, providing they change into something less eye-catching the moment they reach their destination. Odd socks Worn by: People who dress in the dark. Derelicts, curs and ruffians The odd sock wearer is an emotionally unstable, attention-seeking wastrel. The only cure for odd socks is to burn the lot and start from scratch

Menswear Inspired Blazer

A Classic Handbag

The men blazer became popular in the late 1980s. The only bad blazers were from the 80s when extreme shoulder pads came into play. Today the blazer is classic, wear it with a cocktail dress, blue jeans and a white shirt and even with classic shorts, it all goes well!

The term “purse” originally referred to a small bag for holding coins. A “handbag” is a larger accessory; women’s bags grew larger and more complex with time. Never go out without it, and we know it’s annoying to change it every day, so choose the color you love, the color that goes with everything.

Waves, curls and sinuous curves adorn steel bracelets and rings in gold and pink easily to combine and make any sophisticated set.

Men’s reversible Voyageur watch As an extension of the Kalahari model, launched in 2010, Korloff is launching a new, reversible men’s watch. It comprises two timelines, and therefore two ETA movements with a second read-out at 7 o’clock on one of the dials. The other dial has a highly original design, with a disk in place of the hour hand at the centre. The minute display is conventional. Another particularity is that the crown used to adjust the second display is at 4 o’clock. The dials are steel or black chequered, with one version combining the two. Finally, as with the Kalahari watch, the strap is black alligator on one side and black rubber on the other and the patented, pivoting buckle give it the reversibility feature. There are two non-diamond models, and a third which is set with 56 diamonds (1.4 carats) on the bezel itself, sculpted with gadroons all around the watch. A single watch for two different styles!

For SKYFALL, Bond’s choice is the steel on steel Seamaster Planet Ocean 600M OMEGA Co-Axial Chronometer, whose design features can be traced directly back to the classic Seamasters of the 1950s. Inside the case it’s a different story: the watch is driven by the OMEGA Co-Axial calibre 8500 whose revolutionary Co-Axial escapement and free sprung balance deliver long-term stability and precision, dramatically reducing the need for servicing. Also equipped with an Si14 silicon balance spring, the watch is delivered with a four-year warranty. James Bond has worn an OMEGA Seamaster in every film since GOLDENEYE in 1995. The Sun and Saturn in your sector of friends and associates will bring a strong commitment to others. You'll be available, if needed, as well as loyal and trustworthy. A New Moon in this area of your chart will help you develop passion for a cause or organization. You'll relish the chance to use your talents to help out over the next month. New opportunities at work may not materialize to your satisfaction. You might be overlooked for a promotion or expected to prove yourself even if you already have. Venus in Libra will help your career if you turn on the charm.

There will be several opportunities for romance this month, and this could be overwhelming. If you're single, there could be too many choices of partners. If you're in a relationship, you might be tempted to stray. If you have a partner, make an effort to spend time together. The Sun and Saturn will be in Scorpio and your career sector. This combination will bring the desire for respect and success, but you'll have to work hard to earn it. Nothing will come without effort. This pair will bring the need for patience and inner strength.

Daily life may have seemed overwhelming lately, and this month will be no exception. Neptune has moved backward and is now on the cusp of your sign. Your inner world will be amazing, but dealing with commitments and schedules could be a nightmare. Try to stay on track as much as possible by writing everything down and using whatever tools work for you. Jupiter will be in Gemini and could bring a power struggle with a parent or child. You might give in if someone isn't listening to you or has a different agenda. A Full Moon in Gemini on November 28 will stir up previous struggles.
