Dear Readers… March, the month when we celebrate not only women around the world, but also the special being that gives us unconditional daily love — mothers. This special month deserves a special issue from CityPages. This month’s magazine brings you many stories about women, motherhood, and special ways to pamper all mothers, and women out there, in many different ways to celebrate them. We had the pleasure to talk with Ema Shah, a remarkable woman with many talents and a passion for traveling, music and anthropology. This month our magazine witnessed new heights with Kinda Al-Faris, as she had the opportunity to talk with Chris McDougall about making a jump from the heights building in Kuwait. Our staff got the chance to taste Applebee’s new 550 calories menu. I’m sure this food review will make your taste buds water and encourage you to try their new menu. Among our reviews, we were able to talk and see how a groundbreaking machine, is capable of targeting, cooling and eliminating fat cells. Our own Claudia Lozano brings you this experience step by step. Please enjoy our new section “Fashionista of the Month.” This month’s fashionista is Yalda Golshaifi. We also saw this section as an opportunity to showcase important places around Kuwait during the photoshoot of this section. We hope you like the photos and recognize these iconic places in Kuwait. And last but not least, the winner of last months kids competition, sponsored by Fantasy World — Fatima Khuraibet. Check out page 116 for new questions and a new chance to win. As always, we appreciate your readership and ever since we started CityPages in Kuwait, three years ago, we remain committed and aligned to local publishing rules, laws and regulations. If anyone happens to take offense by any of our pages, please do not hesitate to reach out to us. We depend on our readers for improvements. As always, we appreciate your readership. Feel free to pass around our magazine to all your friends and family members, City Pages made sure there’s something for everyone. Enjoy!

My Dear friends and readers, plan to make everyday matter… Ladies It’s our month - our March! Celebrating Women’s Day and Mother’s Day in the same month makes me happy and proud. We love to celebrate our achievements, success, victories & many other things we are just proud of. Being a woman is awesome. We are everything; we are sensitive and assertive, beautiful and unique, soft and strong. We know exactly how to achieve what we desire and what I’m really happy about is that women all over the world make it happen! Also I agree we don’t need a day to celebrate our love to our Mothers, but it’s a day for the whole family to gather and show their love in their own special way together in the same time to their moms. I’m sure this means a lot to our moms, don’t you agree? Our March issue will tell you a lot about that special day, we want you to enjoy it and get inspired by our writers and partners! Happy Women’s Day & Happy Mother’s Day! Honestly I’m in love with our March!

Love you all!

Hello loyal City Pages readers, March is the month that everyone loves; it’s when spring starts to break through, the month that celebrates Mothers day, the month when the weather starts to improve bringing excellent temperatures and lots of sunshine, when the flowers that my mother plants every year start to bloom and the month that I celebrate my own birthday too. The grass is always greener in March, which makes it the perfect time to make things happen. We loved how Chris Douggs McDougall made it happen, jumping off Al Hamra Tower that is, and not just once; what a feat that was! Wearing a parachute designed to feature the Kuwaiti flag, he put the country on the map as a base jumping spot, helping put another notch in the country’s “been there, done that” belt. I was lucky enough to be invited to meet him, and you’ll get to read more inside. A special thank you is in order to Red Catering and Camco Events for the sweet invitation. We are celebrating Mothers day in a big way this year by hosting an Instagram competition, and we’re so happy to have had so many entries, the pictures that were submitted were absolutely heartwarming. We are also going to be ordering at Applebee’s more than ever now that they’ve launched their new U550 menu, featuring dishes at 550 Calories and under. That is every girls dream come true, when she feels like tucking into a hearty meal. I don’t know about the rest of you, but I’m getting bored of my rice bread sandwiches, soups and salads. With so many new branches of the restaurant open now it’s become easier than ever to head to an Applebee’s for comfort food. City Pages has sponsored so many wonderful events in the past, and this month we’ve added Boxhill College’s photography contest to our list. Our aim to contribute to community is part of our ingrained CSR initiative at the magazine. We love to support local talent, and will continue to do so. I’m happy to be able to celebrate my birthday in spirit with all of you. Happy March everyone!

Ema Shah born on June 7th 1981 is a Kuwaiti anthropologist, musician, singer, composer, dancer, pianist, guitarist, writer, puppeteer, theatrical actress, and theater director. With a strong passion, Ema started her career in 1996 with the goal of being part of the art movement as well as being an artist. Her passion led her to starting a Kuwaiti band called “Anthropology” and had presented her first performance by Gibran Khalil Gibran; directing and producing and playing roles in “The Prophet.” In 2012, Ema received her award for Rumba Solo Dance from the Fred Astaire Dance Studio in Jacksonville, Florida amongst many other awards locally and internationally. Ema and “Anthropology” presented many performances locally, regionally, and internationally, with scripts and songs of different languages such as Arabic, English, French, Spanish, Japanese, Maori, Tamazight, Hebrew, and many others! Local and International TV stations and radio stations hosted her live on air; and was spoken highly of by Los Angeles Times, MBC, CNN, France 24, Rotana and many other magazines and newspapers. Ema enjoys travelling to different parts of the world to experience and learn about different cultures, traditions, dances, religions, and languages; as these factors inspire her art work and supports her in finding ways to unify mankind without any racial, sexual, or religious differences. Her intention is to make the world a better and peaceful place by helping people come together as one through her work. www.citypageskuwait.com

Scenario: Each super hero is known to have a super power used to help people who are in threat and danger. If you were to have a super power, what would it be and how will you use it to help people and make the world a safer and peaceful place? “My Supernatural strength will be to control gravity and extend the life time of the planet because that will preserve the human species from extinction; reason being: Planet Earth shall one day reverse gravity and turn it into a Hispanic dead planet. Controlling gravity in the universe will give greater opportunity for the human race and the human gene to persist and thus there will be a greater chance to discover the secrets of life. This leads to hope of correcting the mistakes and perhaps evolution; because human nature ideologically lives in a jungle and is difficult for the human-animal kingdom to realize so. People inherently are fighters, and if it weren’t for these fighters, our civilization that has mastered and foresaw designs for the containment of this civilization at this stage would not have been what it is today. Therefore, those with the greatest minds today, are the ones who will survive in our period today. I can assure you that the ideal solution to the problems of the human-animal survival may be a factor of mass, but as long as we are alive, experiencing life would be the best proof. We have built a moral order and we should not use it in one perspective!”

Exercise More

Before I took a look at the top results, I tried to predict a top 5 and only got this one correct‌because we all knew this was going to be here! Going to the gym/exercising more was far-and-away the most desired good habit, with nearly 9,000 more people wanting to achieve it than the second place habit. It's easy to understand why: regular exercise is like an elixir for your overall health. It plays a role in so many aspects of your well-being (both physical and mental) that we all hold it as a habit worth pursuing. There's only one problem‌ it's one of the harder habits to form and it also takes a while for it to stick: research from the University College London found that regular exercise was significantly trickier to do regularly for participants, compared to easier habits like drinking a glass of water every morning. Their research suggests that it takes at least 66 days for a regular exercise habit to form. Worse yet, science has shown us that exercise is a "long game" if you're looking to see results (but hey, deep down we all already knew this). How to form the habit: Since the biggest challenge for exercising regularly is how long it takes to form the habit and to see lasting results, reducing friction and increasing motivation are of paramount importance. Honestly, I've yet to come across a better "tool" for establishing this often difficult habit than a method recommended to me long ago by a professional fitness trainer. Take an oldschool flip calendar and tape it to your gym locker (or put it in your gym bag) and put a big "X" on the date every time you go to the gym. I have the luxury of leaving it up on my gym's whiteboard, and I've noticed that not only will this encourage you to get down to the gym more often (since the calendar tells no lies), it also allows you to be more honest with yourself about how often you've gone. Last tip: Focus on getting in and out, because the research says that people who

spend too much time "measuring" results (through mirrors and scales) are more likely to de-motivate themselves.

Read

Most Sought After Good Habits and How to Achieve Them I'm an avid student of behavioral psychology, and I really enjoy observing trends of large groups of people. A few days ago, I noticed something curious about one of my new favorite iPhone apps, Lift, which focuses on habit formation. There's a section in the app which lists all of the most selected habits that users have added. What's interesting is that due to the app's intentions (sticking to good habits), you essentially get an inside look at what habits matter to the most people. Given the time of year this is, motivation and resolution making is at an all-time high. That's why I thought it might be useful to break down the 7 most popular good habits from this list and describe the science behind making them happen. Let's begin! www.citypageskuwait.com

Reading is a hard habit shun: most of us would like to consider ourselves to be intelligent, and we "know" that reading is good for our brains‌so why do some of us find it so hard to read consistently? First things first, the hype behind reading is true: not only has study after study shown that reading gives a noticeable improvement to creativity & decision making, but research from Yale also points to reading as being a fantastic way to improve your memory. Last but not least, the valuable information obtained from good books is hard to put a price tag on. While reading isn't a race (and their isn't any conclusive research point to an ideal reading time), I've seen quite a few mentions of 30 minutes a day being a good place to start for those interesting in reading daily.

Floss

It's a habit that's a lot more important to your health than you think. A number of recent studies have shown that there are some strong ties between gum health and heart health. It's even been suggested that taking care of your gums can help reduce the risk of strokes! "There are a lot of studies that suggest that oral health, and gum disease in particular, are related to serious conditions like heart disease."—Sally Cram, DDS & spokeswoman for the American Dental Association said. Plus, the dangers of bad breath can not be understated…

Sleep by Midnight

Since many of us will be (on average) sleeping away 1/3 of our lives, getting quality sleep is incredibly important to our well-being. I suspect that this habit was popular in particular because for many people, staying up past midnight means nothing but trouble: you were either out too late, up on the computer goofing around, or just tossing and turning in bed. The tough thing about this habit is that there is a lot of misinformation out there, such as the 8-hour rule. According to acclaimed researcher Daniel Kripke: "We've all been told you ought to sleep 8 hrs., but there was never any evidence… people who sleep between 6.5 hrs. and 7.5 hrs. a night, live the longest, are happier and most productive." Many other researchers counter his argument and say sleep is more dependent on the person than the amount. Despite all this, I think many of us who have a regular work schedule can agree it's awesome to wake up in the morning and not feel awful. Since most jobs run on the same schedule, midnight is a pretty solid "limit" for hitting the hay, regardless of what the sleep scientists argue about.

Eat Breakfast

As someone who eats breakfast daily, I was surprised to see this habit so high on the list. I suppose I shouldn't be though, because there is a variety of research (including a study from theWorld Health Organization) that shows how our morning meals can impact the rest of our days: "Adequate nutrition can raise your productivity levels by 20 percent." WHO One thing to note is that you aren't that much better off if you eat something too sugary in the morning to substitute nothing at all: too much glucose in the morning can cause a crash later in the day. According to researcher Leigh Gibson, "the brain works best with about 25 grams of glucose circulating in the blood stream about the amount found in a banana."

Save Money

Ah, now this is one of my favorites! I don't need to cite any research to prove to you why this is an incredibly important habit to form… but I'm going to go against the grain a little bit here in doling out my advice. Instead of overwhelming your already busy day trying to count pennies or cut back on lattes, I agree with many modern financial experts who urge people to focus on big wins instead. So, what's the biggest win you can achieve this year if you have very little saving experience? That would be "automating your personal fiances," a term I'm borrowing fromRamit Sethi.

Eat More Fruit/Vegetables

Some people's taste buds just seem to make them "veggie haters," but we all know that a healthy serving of fruits and plenty of vegetables makes for a healthy diet. In order to best approach this habit, you have to decide what is really stopping you from eating vegetables. Is it because…

Women’s Month and the Assertive Leader Its March, the month where the world celebrates Women and Mothers; honoring them and recognizing how hard they have had to work all their lives to get to where they are today. As an executive and a parent coach, I talk and work with women all the time. I hear what they have to say, I hear their concerns, their woes, and their triumphs. From where I stand, women have come a long way in all aspects of life, whether it is career related or family related. We still have a long way to go, but we should take a minute to reflect, realize and honor our selves and women around us for our accomplishments. Did you take a minute to reflect? Great! Now off to the hard part!! My realization has been that roles of leadership do not come so easily to women, and some are not very confident taking a leading role in an organization; where men naturally assume it is their natural place as they ascend the career ladder. There are many ways around this and coaching is definitely one of them, however, it would be a lot easier to start as early as childhood. If we women would like to see more assertive and strong willed women, we need to raise more assertive and strong willed girls! I will share some tips with you to help you on your quest to raise strong, resilient, and confident girls: 1. Allow and encourage your daughter to be assertive. Once you make that decision, stick with it. It will not always be easy but once you set it as a value and not waver from it, she will understand and will naturally be assertive. How can she be assertive? Let her make her own decisions, for example picking out her own clothes (even if she ends up looking like a clown!). Encourage her to order her own meal next time you go out to a restaurant and stand up for her self during play dates or even picking out a movie with her brother. 2. Affirm moments of assertiveness. When she does assert her self and make her wishes clear and her needs known, encourage her for doing that. 3. Encourage her to take physical risks. "Girls who avoid risks have poorer self-esteem than girls who can and do face challenges," says JoAnn Deak, Ph.D., author of Girls Will Be Girls. "Urge your daughter to go beyond her comfort zone -- for example, encourage a girl who's scared to ride her bike downhill to find just a small hill to conquer first." Catherine Steiner-Adair, Ed.D., co-author of Full of Ourselves: A Wellness Program to Advance Girl Power, Health and Leadership, agrees. "It's important to help even nonathletic girls develop some physical competence and confidence when they're young. Whether it's through team or individual sports, girls need to form a physical relationship with their body that builds confidence." 4. Allow her to disagree with you. I know some www.citypageskuwait.com

of you are already saying no to this one and shaking your heads, but bear with me. "Raising a powerful girl means living with one. She must be able to stand up to you and be heard, so she can learn to do the same with classmates, teachers, or future bosses," says White. Lyn Mikel Brown, Ed.D., and Sharon Lamb, Ed.D., co-authors of Packaging Girlhood, write, "Girls need guidance about how to stay clear in their disagreements, and they need support for not giving up their convictions to maintain a false harmony. Help girls to make considered choices about how to express their feelings, and to whom." Steiner-Adair notes "Not all girls will want to do this, especially shy girls, but you can still help them develop the skills." Remember, that raising tomorrow’s leader takes passion and a lot of work on a daily basis. We don’t always get the big moments in life to announce our values and transfer them to our children. We get the tiny moments. The moments that come and go so fast, you can miss them if you are not aware of them. It is these little moments that build one on top of the other until they create a value that sticks with your child wherever she goes in life, whether you are with her or not. You are creating an assertive girl. Assertiveness cannot be dependent on convenience. It just doesnot work that way. And believe me, sometimes raising an assertive girl can be a pain in –the-you-know-where (I know from first hand experience!) but I think it’s worth it. Don’t you? Happy Women’s day and Happy Mother’s day to all you wonderful women out there!

A simple girl who loves her life and appreciate every moment of it, a banker who's trying to have marvels accounts of the knowledge in this universe, always seeks the beauty in everything and every one, a passionate reader, in love with any book my hands can get, and my most favorite sentence is: life is simple, so simply live it .

Fatma Al-Najdi

IM TITANIUM

Sometimes when we are so down, we start remembering all the bad things that ever happened to us, and then you start to hear that little voice in your mind: HERE COMES THE DRAMA, but you ignore it, after that the eyes starts to sing: here come the tears, so you start talking to your self, thinking that all the bad things were only meant to happen just for you, like even since the beginning of the creation all of the misfortune were just under your name, to make your life harder, to make you suffer, to be a miserable human being, and the list goes on. Its normal, it happens, and if it didn't happen to you, dude, there is something wrong with you. Thats what makes us humans, that what makes us know our limitations and how hard it could gets, it teaches us how we can stand up against it with our believes. If we are strong enough? If can manage our selves? and what exactly we are made of? Like the movie LIFE OF PIE, poor Pie, after his whole family drowned and he survived in the ocean on a raft with a TIGER, how bad could it get !! Thats how life is, gets harder and squeeze us to let us realize what we are really made from. In my opinion some people are made from matches sticks , with any scratch they will burn right away, some people are made from mud, with any drop of water they will melt to the ground, and some people are made from steal, even if a canon ball hits them, they will feel tickled from it and laugh. I've wondered my type for a long time, until one day I was out with my dearest cousin and she knows my kind of music, so she let me hear this song: IM TITANIUM by SAI and DAVID GUETTA . From the first word it was love at first heard you can say, there is something about this song that showed me WHO I REALLY AM. What I'm really made of, what I can stand up to. I am titanium, I'm strong, I can do anything, anywhere, anytime. Sometimes we think life is unfair to us, but at that moment you just know, what you really are, a weakling or a strong human being. To maintain control of your life, to stand up on your feet again, to walk tall against all of the worlds misery, and still made of TITANIUM. www.citypageskuwait.com

& Chris McDougall

Chris “Douggs” McDougall Jumps off Al Hamra Tower and gives us the adrenaline rush we’ve all been missing. Chris “Douggs” McDougall is a free spirited yet centered man. He is a professional Sky Diver and BASE jumper, a six time Australian champion of formation skydiving and champion record holder in the world’s largest freefall formation. He has represented Australia in world championships and is the base jumping world champion for 2003/4. Chris has jumped off cliffs, bridges, buildings, towers and antennas all over the world. He has jumped off the world famous Petronas Towers in KL, the Jin Mao tower in Shanghai, the Q1, Queensland and most recently the Al Hamra Tower, Kuwait. He also works on oil rigs when he is called upon to lend his expertise with fixing structures that otherwise can’t be reached except by hanging on a rope. Australian by nationality, Chris now lives with his wife (who also base jumps) in Wengen, Swiss Alps, where his house is apparently perched atop a cliff as high as the Al Hamra tower, which he can jump every day. He started out as a carpenter straight out of school, but got into skydiving soon after, but he left carpentry to concentrate on competing. I asked him why he chose Kuwait to which he pointed out ‘Kuwait hasn’t been base jumped yet, and this is a great way to help Kuwait kick start adventure themed sports”. He wants to inspire Kuwaitis to follow their passions, whatever they may be. According to Chris so many kids and youth these days are attached to their laptops and smart phones and aren’t necessarily challenging themselves. He would love for everyone to go out and find adventure of all sorts, for “today’s society doesn’t get out enough” and I’m sure we all agree. When he was invited to visit Kuwait for the second time by Camco Global for the SkyFall event he readily agreed, and seemed to really mesh with the friends he made here. Chris’s jump thrilled the enormous crowd that turned up to see him on the 8th of March, where he catapulted himself from the highest glassed point of the building wearing a parachute designed like the Kuwaiti flag, his love for the country made evident for all to see. CityPages were beyond thrilled to have met Chris and are now actively following his next steps. Who knows, we may just invite him back ourselves.

What's one thing you learned from your mom that helped you in motherhood? Patience and consistency, for my personal learning I had to be patient, to teach my kids I had to be consistent .

How do you balance being a woman and a mother? I'm a working mother of two, I have many responsibilities and I have a tight schedule, but I make sure that the time I spend with my kids is quality time, and we have certain rituals they look for and that's how we bond.

When you were little, did you dream about being a mom? Yes all the time. My perfect version of a woman is a successful young mother. I always wanted to be one.

What is something unique from each of your daughters that they get from you? Laura who is 5 is very considerate and thoughtful for her age, and that is a quality I like to practice, and Liann who is 2 is very opinionated and a good negotiator and that's in me too.

Do you have nicknames for your daughters and do they have one for you? Yes I call Laura law law. And Liann youn youn, and mostly they both go by the name "you little monkey"

What's the most challenging about being a mother? The challenge is setting a good example at all times. Kids look at their mothers as role models and you have to lead by example, you seek perfection but you can never meet it. We just try.

What's the most rewarding experience you've had while being a mom? Everyday I'm guaranteed a hug and a smile, they love you for you no matter what.

Having two daughters, what are the values you want them to learn from you for when they become mothers? They have to live and lead their own lives. I want them to succeed on a personal level and that will definitely teach them the value of things, being a good mom starts with being a well rounded person.

Did you experience different feelings or cravings from each of your pregnancies? Yes, with my eldest Laura it was shrimps all the time, with my youngest Liann it was strawberries.

What inspires you as a mother? The look in their eyes when they learn something new, that sparkle is what keeps me going.

Do you think it's easier or harder to be a mom now than when you were a child? Easier in certain aspects like teaching my kids because now I download bedtime stories and learning programs on my IPad, but , more difficult in others since I have many other responsibilities

www.citypageskuwait.com

Can you remember one thing that each of your daughters said or did that surprised you? When Laura was little we were revising the alphabets and at the letter C was a picture of a crown, she wasn't familiar with that word so she said this is a queen hat! And one day Liann was trying to snatch Laura's toy and when I said No! She said "But sharing is caring ". That made me respect their intelligence very much.

How does it feel watching your children grow up? Such a joy, I'm blessed every day.

What would you say to first time moms? Take your time, learn with joy, don't panic it's a learning process for both of you. Do it with love!

Dr. Adel Quttainah

Cutting Edge Plastic Surgery Today most cosmetic surgery patients want simple solutions to their cosmetic concerns. Educated customers and internet savvy patients are aware of most of the latest trends in cosmetic surgery often before they are offered in most clinics. Dr. Adel Quttainah has been a pioneer in offering less invasive surgeries to patients in Kuwait as well as other new emerging procedures.

One of the most popular procedures that Dr. Quttainah performs is "lunch time" laser liposuction. It has been increasing in popularity, especially for those who do not have a lot time in their work schedules or for those who do not want their family or friends to know they are doing liposuction. It is a minor surgical solution that aids quicker healing time thanks to its pioneering advanced internal lasers that melt the fat away and target the areas that people find hard to shift the weight from. This includes the neck, upper arms, abdomen and hips, resulting in a smooth outline and definition of the covering skin. Liposuction removes the fat directly and the laser helps to tighten the skin. The major difference between this liposuction is it done under local anesthetic only, like a visit to the dentist. The patient is awake the whole time and feels a little pressure and virtually no pain. The procedure takes only about one hour and the patients go home right after. There is only a very small incision that is closed with one stitch. They can return to work immediately and no one will even know they did a procedure until they notice the final result. Liposuction can be specifically targeted and that means particular areas of your body can be shaped and sculpted and problem areas you can't lose with diet and exercise can be treated easily with guaranteed results. Many surgeries can be offered at Dr. Quttainah's clinic using local anaesthetic including breast augmentation, hair transplant as well as others. Depending on the area, up to 5 litres of straight fat can be removed in one liposuction procedure. Many patients ask about new machines that help remove fat such as external lasers or "freezing" the fat. According to Dr. Quttainah, "We have many patients asking about a non - invasive or easy ways to lose fat..

we have had many years of seeing these machines come and go with no success... Liposuction is the only guaranteed fat remover. Companies market these machines by giving false hopes to the patient....they have a place for patients who will try anything except surgery, and most get very, very minimal result..which is usually a loss due to diet change anyhow. Most patients come to us complaining that they wasted large amounts of time and money trying to lose fat with these trendy machines and should have just paid for liposuction instead." With today's technology they are making surgery easier, safer and with a much more rapid recovery time. Results are better than ever and patients are benefitting from these advances in every way. OSTEOPOROSIS

what women need to know According to a recent research report, the lack of sufficient vitamin D intake is becoming a growing problem in Kuwait and entire Gulf region and due to lack of exposure to sunlight there is an increased risk of the debilitating bone disease osteoporosis and associated bone fractures. Unfortunately, the Gulf is synonymous now with bad lifestyle choices which increase the risk of contracting osteoporosis, such as lack of physical activity, bad diet, and reduced sun exposure due to the extremely hot summers. So I thought it is necessary to discuss this increasingly growing health problem in a little more detail. Osteoporosis, means "porous bone", is a disease in which the bones gradually become weak and brittle. So brittle that a fall or even mild stresses like bending over can cause fracture. Osteoporosis-related fractures most commonly occur in the hip, wrist or spine. CAUSES Your bones are in a constant state of renewal — new bone is made and old bone is broken down. When you're young, your body makes new bone faster than it breaks down old bone and your bone mass increases. Most people reach their peak bone mass by their early 20s. As people age, bone mass is lost faster than it's created. How likely you are to develop osteoporosis depends partly on how much bone mass you attained in your youth. The higher your peak bone mass, the more bone you have "in the bank" and the less likely you are to develop osteoporosis as you age.

RISK FACTORS There are a variety of factors that can put you at risk for developing osteoporosis. These include both controllable and uncontrollable factors. It is important to discuss your risk factors with your healthcare provider. Together, you can develop a plan to protect your bones

Uncontrollable Risk Factors: Some risk factors for osteoporosis are out of your control, including: Gender: Women are much more likely to develop osteoporosis than men.

frames tend to have a higher risk because they may have less bone mass to draw from as they age. Hormone levels: Osteoporosis is more common in people who have too much or too little of certain hormones in their bodies. Examples include: Sex hormones: The reduction of estrogen levels at menopause is one of the strongest risk factors for developing osteoporosis. Women may also experience a drop in estrogen during certain cancer treatments. Men experience a gradual reduction in testosterone levels as they age. Some treatments for prostate cancer reduce testosterone levels in men. Lowered sex hormone levels tend to weaken bones. Thyroid problems: Too much thyroid hormone can cause bone loss. This can occur if your thyroid is overactive or if you take too much thyroid hormone medication to treat an underactive thyroid. Other glands: Osteoporosis has also been associated with overactive parathyroid and adrenal glands.

Controllable Risk Factors Low calcium intake: A lifelong lack of calcium plays a major role in the development of osteoporosis. Low calcium intake contributes to diminished bone density, early bone loss and an increased risk of fractures.

Family history: Having a parent or sibling with osteoporosis puts you at greater risk, especially if you also have a family history of fractures.

Steroids and other medications: Long-term use of corticosteroid medications, such as prednisone and cortisone, interfere with the bone-rebuilding process. Osteoporosis has also been associated with medications used to combat or prevent: Seizures, Depression, Cancer, Gastric reflux, etc.

Frame size: Men and women who have small body

Sedentary lifestyle: People who spend a lot of

Age: The older you get, the greater your risk of osteoporosis.

time sitting have a higher risk of osteoporosis than do their more-active counterparts. Any weight-bearing exercise is beneficial for your bones, but walking, running, jumping, dancing and weightlifting seem particularly helpful for creating healthy bones. Tobacco use: The exact role tobacco plays in osteoporosis isn't clearly understood, but researchers do know that tobacco use contributes to weak bones. Weight-loss surgery: A reduction in the size of your stomach or a bypass of part of the intestine limits surface area available to absorb nutrients, including calcium.

TEST AND DIAGNOSIS The most common test to measure bone density is dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA). This procedure is quick, simple and gives accurate results. It painlessly measures the density of bones in your spine, hip and wrist — the areas most likely to be affected by osteoporosis.

TREATMENT Treating osteoporosis involves reducing bone resorption using bisphosphonate drugs, which are either taken orally weekly or monthly. However, a new medication, which is given via an infusion, only needs to be administered once a year, so helping to improve medication compliance.

PREVENTION Spending 10 minutes per day, exposing 40 percent of the body area such as the back, arms and legs to the sun as well as eating sufficient foods containing vitamin D, are both recommended actions for helping to maintain vitamin D levels within the normal range that prevents osteoporosis. CoolSculpting, the Michelangelo for your body This is the first and only machine in Kuwait capable to target those difficult areas, which seem immune to exercise and diet.

By Claudia Lozano

Located on the 6th floor of the Hotel Missoni, at the Beverly Hills Medical Center, lies a CoolSculptin machaine capable of a groundbreaking procedure that targets, cools, and eliminates fat cells without the use of needles, cuts, or the use of anesthesia. I had the opportunity to talk with Dr. Nabil Kablawi about this device and also try this new procedure. “It is not a weight loss machine,” Dr. Kablawi said. “This is meant to be for those who, after some diet and exercise, still have a muffing-top or love handles.” He added patients with liver problems or a hernia can’t use this procedure for safety reasons. Clients will discuss all this with the doctor first and select the areas to be treated. For every area, the CoolSculpting device is placed on your body for 60 minutes. For example, if one person wants to have their abdomen and sides done, it would take three hours to cover those three areas — the abdomen, the right side and the left side.

The procedure: As he examined my abdomen we decided to focus on the lower abdomen. There are two sizes to determine an area; he took the small plastic plaque to mark my lower abdomen. I sat down and a thing gel pad was placed on the area to be treated. This is not only done as a sanitary precaution, but also because the cool gel acts like a barrier to prevent any harming of the skin at

the time of suction. They placed the machine in the target area, making sure both extremes of the device where on the marked spots the doctor had made previously. Once the machine is turned on I slowly started to feel my skin been suctioned in and pressed. The device draws the bulge up between two cooling panels that will keep this area at -4 C° during 60 minutes. The suction power is constant throughout the entire process. Clients will be wrapped in blankets to keep the body warm, except for the target area. In the meantime they can also enjoy water, or like me, a hot tea to keep them warm.

The method: This revolutionary machine got the FDA approval on September 2010. It uses a precisely controlled cooling method called Cryolipolysis. This trademarked procedure targets, cools, and eliminate fat cells without damaging the tissue. As fat cells are crystallized and broken down, the body can easily flush those naturally later on. Once the remaining fat cells condense and get closer together, so does the extra skin, reshaping its contour and tightening the area. Results can be seen as quickly as three weeks after the treatment, but the body will keep working flushing down more fat cells and will continue to do so for up to six months. “If a patient wants the area to be treated again, they have to wait at least three months,” Dr. Kablawi said. “You won’t see a change in your weight, but the circumference of you abdomen will be less and you will be impressed by the

After an hour Dr. Kablawi came back and waited for the machine to beep. The 60 minutes had passed and as he gently pulled the device I could still see my skin just as the machine had suctioned it — a little rectangle bulged up. He got some cream and massaged the area back to its normal shape. It was still very cold and I could feel some numbness and a little tingle.

“Some redness and a little bruising on the skin can be expected,” Dr. Kablawi said. “But CoolSculpting is a completely non-invasive procedure, so clients can still return to their daily activities immediately.”

LASER HAIR REMOVAL How many types of Laser are used in Yiaco Apollo for hair removal? Mainly two types of Laser are used Nd YAG and Alexandrite. ND Yag laser works more efficiently on strong hair and all types of skin. Alexandrite works better on fair skin and light hair. Is there any difference in your hair removal techniques which makes you different from another clinic? We have the latest cooling technique which makes the hair removal laser virtually painless apart from this, we have the shortest pulse duration which gives better and faster results without any side effects . How many laser sessions for hair removal I will require for reducing my hair growth? Depending on the area, texture, distribution and growth of your hair, you may require multiple sessions. Is it necessary that I should do my laser session frequently? Yes it is important for you to schedule your laser session every 6-8 weeks period in order to reduce your hair growth. Are there any side effects of laser? Usually the Dermatologist will take a detailed history and prescribe medications and precautions in order to determine your skin sensitivity. To avoid and reduce the incidents of burns, post laser pigmentation, acne farm eruptions or rashes after the laser. These may occur immediately after laser or within 24-48 hours after the laser session. How can I avoid any side effects after the laser? • Avoid any direct sun exposure before and after 2 weeks of your laser session. • Shave the area to be treated 1 day before your laser session. • Avoid applying any cosmetic cream or lotion before laser session. • Inform your doctor if you are on any medicine like antibiotics. If there is hair growth, after 1 week of my laser session, what should I do? The hair will start growing after few days after the

laser. Some of the hairs will fall and some of them will remain .shave those hairs if you are uncomfortable with it. Do not do waxing, plucking, tweezing, bleaching after laser. What measures may be done after laser session? Do not use hot water or scrub for 48-72 hrs over the laser area, avoid rubbing, scratching that are. Apply a post laser cream or antibiotic cream after laser as advised by your doctor.

LASER TREATMENTS FOR AESTHETIC Which other aesthetic and cosmetic treatment you have in your clinic? Apart from laser, we have many skin remodeling and rejuvenation programmes for face and body. One of them is the Oxygen treatment and 3 Face skin rejuvenation programme What is new about this oxygen & 3 Face programme? The Oxysystem is a new oxygen therapy that combines a jet of oxygen with dermabrasion and massaging of connective tissues. The 3 face also includes dermabrasion with massage, but it also provides photherapy to the skin. What are the benefits of these programmes? The Oxygen treatment increases the blood supply to the tissue, improves cell metabolism and stimulates the production of collagen by fibroblasts. The 3 Face treatment is mainly useful for fine lines around eyes and mouth, sun damaged skin, acne scars and uneven texture of skin. Do you have any treatment for stretch marks? Yes, recently we have added a new device name Derma Pod which is very useful for the stretch marks. Do you have any laser treatment for pores or skin rejuvenation We have a new aesthetic laser treatment known as spectra peel for open pores, inflammatory acne, pigmented lesions and skin rejuvenation.

How does this Spectrapeel differs from ordinary laser treatment? Spectra peel is a two step rejuvenation treatment that dramatically reduces acne, improves your general skin tone and texture and even reduces large pores and some acne scars. Unlike other laser treatment, spectrapeel is virtually painless. You can return to your normal life, immediately after treatment without any risk of side effects. Do you have any treatment for wrinkles, skin rejuvenation, apart from spectra peel? We do have procedures like Botox, Derma fillers, Mesotherapy to meet the demand of enhancing facial contour by removing wrinkles & rejuvenating the skin without any surgery. What is this no needle Mesotherapy? This is a new concept in mesotherapy whereby aesthetic medicines for improving the skin elasticity & glow are infused with machine. It is totally painless, so patients prefer this procedure to enhance their looks. What is PRP? PRP is blood plasma enriched with platelets. It contains various growth factors and cytokines required for tissue regeneration. It is an excellent way to reduce the signs of ageing. Where is it used? PRP has been used to treat nerve injury, tendonitis, osteoarthritis, bone injury and in cardiac muscle regeneration. In aesthetic medicine it has a variety of applications which include treatment of wrinkles and skin aging, scars, pigmentation and hair regeneration . How it is done? The procedure includes drawing a small amount of blood from the patient. The blood is centrifuged to concentrate the platelets which are activated and reinjected in the treatment area by small needles where requires for example face, neck, scalp (hair roots) or hands. Three sessions are done at monthly intervals followed by a fourth session at 6 months and fifth session at one year. Results appear gradually and continue to improve over a long period of time. Is it safe? PRP is absolutely safe as patients own blood is used and is the natural way of skin regeneration.

Women and Exercise This is the time to talk about important issues including women’s health.

Breast cancer is a major medical problem of women ageing 35 years and above. Women at younger ages should conduct monthly self examinations of their breasts to detect potentially cancerous lumps. Launching the third and most successful Es.ca.pade trip this year, was nothing short of a prodigious experience filled with challenging and rapturous enlightenment. Scaling on a new level of exceptional wealth of success is Pink Coffee Marketing & PR, with one of its many flourishing initiatives. Es.ca.pade lives by the motto of creating memories before they happen – and this is what happened in 25 days of endless entertainment, travel and merriment.

The backpacking journey started from Barcelona where the travelers embarked to the romantic country Paris and there after to Berlin. Berlin won the heart of the travelers with its magnificent history and art, which is where they embarked to Hamburg to explore more of the historic country - Germany. From Germany we explored Denmark and headed towards Tallinn. Mr. X recounts his journey “Meeting and exchanging with people from wide spectrum of the world at all the various hostels, was totally awe inspiring. An unforgettable experience.” Singing to a different tune they traveled by sea to Estonia, where the rush and trill of the arctic winters had them wishing for more. And more is what they got at St. Petersburg, Russia. The heritage of the city won their hearts with the resplendent churches, stunning architecture and impressive art work. They ended it at a focal point – at Amsterdam – where they spent a night star struck by the flowing canals and listening to nature’s music. Shamlan Al-bahar believes that “Creating and compounding Es.ca.pade initiative at such a glorious high scale is a challenge” .

A challenge which was met well by all our encouraging sponsors. We practice what we preach here at Es.ca. pade. We go out and create endless possibilities to learn new skills, enhance the participant’s capabilities, and to explore opportunities in an enjoyable, safe, and family oriented environment. Applauds and laurels of inspiration from all the travelers have pushed us to plan our fourth Es.ca.pade. Look forward for a new chapter to be born in the books of Es.ca.pade. Make your next holiday, a healthy one As I look out my hotel room window, it's a sunny day. Green foliage frames the views of the swimming pool beneath my boudoir and the best part? My view is devoid of sand.Well that's probably because I'm not near the beach yet. A fitness-holiday is great simply because:

It is a great way to restart your motivation and enthusiasm for exercise. I'm in Thailand to polish up my skills in muay thai boxing. Training at a muay thai camp doing one on one sessions with my Thai trainer, in this humid weather, while at the same time witnessing other people training hard at camp has definitely been a sensory overload experience! One in a positive way as it has rekindled my passion for the sport.

It's a good excuse to step out of your fitness comfort zone and try something new. Sawadeeka from Thailand! For this year's Liberation and National Day celebration, I decided to jet away from the dusty shores of Kuwait to the sunny humid skies of Phuket to partake in some R&R (rest and relaxation for those of you not in the know). While my surroundings are lush, tranquil and a far cry from the traffic-ridden, sandy streets of the Arabian Gulf Road, my body is in another state altogether. Bruised, battered and aching in places I haven't felt in awhile, my holiday excursion is in-fact, fitness related. Kuwaitis are known for traveling at every season. Be it the schools' Spring Break holidays, Eid or even Christmas, we always find a sound reason to jet-away. Why, we travel so much so, that it is one of the most effective methods the Ministry of Interiors uses in getting one to settle their financial-debts. According to the Kuwait Times online, at present there are approximately 90,000 individuals (Kuwaitis and expats alike) who are on the travel-ban list for unpaid dues. I would imagine, a good chunk of these being traffic and speeding related. Our fervor for worldwide-gallivanting saw us spending roughly around KD2.24 billion in 2011 on travel expenditure, according to the Central Bank; a 22% increase from 2010. As we clearly have a penchant for visiting a country or two, why not make your next holiday excursion, a fitness-related one?

For example, my friends and I were attending bikram yoga classes (yoga classes in a heated environment) at 7am in the middle of the forest! I even managed to bump into Saoud Al-Humaidhi from Circuit+ Gym who was here with some of his crew as he was out and about going for a run through the humid jungle ridden-streets of Chalong. It is definitely a positive experience and something you'd hardly forget.

As fitness is one of the reasons of your trip, it cuts down the likelihood of you food binging. Too often when we travel, we find that we'd experience 'travel weight gain' upon our return back to Ktown. The discipline one normally possesses when it comes to food and what you eat is understandably a tad more relaxed as you're on holiday. However if you're on a fitness-related getaway, then you would to an extent, watch what you consumed. Also with

the amount of exercise done, having a treat or twowouldn't make you pile on the pounds.

You will lose weight. Depending on how fitness-oriented you make your trip to be, you will shed weight if you exercised consistently throughout your holiday duration. At camp, I see a lot of overweight expatriates exercising hard. Their reason? Going back to their respective countries and going through the nine to five grind, they sometimes find it challenging to workout. They hope that this fitness excursion and the weight loss experienced, will give them the motivation to continue this healthy habit of working out when they go back home. So where does one begin in trying to concoct such a holiday for themselves? Well the Internet is a great tool and you can find a variety of detox spas and exotic exercise getaways via Google. I also like this website called Responsible Travel (www.responsibletravel.com) which specializes in a cornucopia of health and fitness related holidays (fancy doing a 5 day yoga trip in Kenya, Africa?). If you're still unsure about planning it, speak to your personal trainer and pick his/her brain. You can even drop me an email if you like at rrevi@multiworks.net. Remember, the hardest part of exercising is not executing it but rather starting it. If you've planned out a health-holiday trip, you are already halfway there to your journey of experiencing something positive and new which will undoubtedly benefit you and your life. March 2013

Cool New Gadgets To Add To Your Wishlist

This month we're running the gamut from fun to functional: highlights include a foosball app, a sled for adults, easy-install tire chains, and the Cadillac of vacuum cleaners.

Miele S8 Alize The Alize is the most efficient and quietest vacuum of its size. A sensor in the head detects the type of surface, so the 12-pound vacuum can tailor suction strength to texture. Rubber shock absorbers on the wheels’ axles and a cloth-insulated motor reduce noise.

ThinkGeek minibru

Light and Motion Taz 1200

The minibru is a coffeepot and mug in one. A user adds coarse ground coffee and hot water to the 12-ounce French press and then inserts a filter that pushes particles to the bottom. The filter, which doesn’t have the usual plunger, doubles as the mug’s lining.

Drivers won’t miss a cyclist with a Taz bike light. At its highest setting—1,200 lumens—it’s brighter than some car headlights. The 7.6-ounce lamp has three LED bulbs and attaches to the handlebars with rubber straps.

Thule Easy Fit Snow Chains

Snolo Sleds Stealth-X

It takes only 12 seconds per tire to install Easy Fit Snow Chains. Rather than driving onto a precisely aligned chain system, a user slips a set over a tire and then depresses a pedal on a central aluminum bar to tighten the chains all together.

The Snolo is a sled for adults. A rider steers the nine-pound carbon-fiber sled using foot pegs attached to a central ski. He can lean onto its side rails to take tight corners while traveling at 40 mph.

New Potato Technologies Classic Match Foosball When full-size foosball is hard to find, players can snap an iPad into the Classic Match Foosball table and boot up a game. Each of the eight rods has an optical sensor that relays direction and spin info through the iPad’s connector.

DarbeeVision Darblet

Expect Labs MindMeld

Alpinestars Atem Leather Jacket

With the Darblet image-processing box, a user can upgrade his picture quality without buying a new TV. The three-ounce device plugs into a TV’s HDMI source and its display; Darbee-developed algorithms then enhance a streaming image so it looks sharper even without more pixels.

The iPad MindMeld app anticipates what information a video chatter would like to have on hand. The app listens to the conversation, analyzes the language, and automatically pulls up relevant information from the Web, including videos, maps, and weather.

The Atem is the safest motorcycle jacket available. The company subjected every component— including foam chest, shoulder, and elbow pads; Kevlar cuffs; and a 1.33-millimeter leather shell—to stress tests that more accurately mimic crashes.

Kohler Moxie

Belkin NetCam

Singing in the shower is easier with the Moxie showerhead and speaker. Held in place with a magnet, the detachable speaker sits in the middle of the 60-nozzled head. A user can sync it to any Bluetooth-enabled device up to 32 feet away.

With the NetCam, a user can watch what’s happening in his living room, anytime, anywhere. In low light, the Wi-Fi camera activates infrared night vision and can stream video or photos triggered by motion to any iOS or Android device.

IDAPT S2+ Docking Universal Speaker The IDAPT S2 is the first speaker that can play music and charge any three devices at once. Two charging docks with interchangeable connectors power virtually any smartphone or MP3 player, while music streams to the speaker via Bluetooth. There’s also a USB cord for larger devices.

Mother ... I43 My Mother is that person who carried me for nine months in her womb, delivers me into this world , she takes care of me all her life. My mother completes my innovation with her spirit and emotions, my mother gave me all love energy until she ignored all her own need just to see me happy to live my life successfully. "Mother... I Love you" After everything that my mother has given me, it is the time to show my love and gratitude with a truly amazing gift every day and moment, which will show just how much I care about her. Especially in the world Mother's Day, my gift should be all about celebrating the wonderful woman who has given me so much. And I am planning (for sure with no doubts) to craft a special perfume for her, why? Perfume is the perfect gift for my mother and any woman. It shows thought, effort and taste on my part and if it's the right perfume for her, she will be forever thankful. The scent is the strongest link to memory every time she smells it, she will reminder my love and appreciation. Yes my gift to my mother is a perfume and I named it “ Seham .

A monthly article contributed by John Peaveler and Ayeshah Al-Humaidhi of K'S PATH

John Peaveler

Where are all the animals? In February of this year, K’S PATH received a call about a Hamadryas baboon on the loose in the Friday market. Baboons of this kind tend to compete fiercely for resources, and can be particularly dangerous around food. They are also potential vectors for an astounding number of diseases that affect humans, including rabies, herpes, hepatitis b, HIV, and tuberculosis, to name but a few. A baboon on the loose in a public place, struggling to survive in stressful, unnatural conditions, therefore represents a serious risk to human health. Two of the K’S PATH animal control units therefore quickly responded to the call.

Two of the K’S PATH animal control units therefore quickly responded to the call.

sending staff periodically to check the traps. Almost 24 hours later, we were finally successful. We had an unharmed baboon in a trap.

On arriving at the market, we were directed to the Shrimpy’s restaurant, where she had last been sighted. A thorough search of the building, including the roof, led nowhere. Several hours of searching the area around the market and talking to people revealed little except word of an occasional sighting. Eventually we were obliged to go back to our other duties and see what developed.

In 2012, poachers killed 668 Rhinos in South Africa-- the highest number ever recorded. This figure represents a significant upward trend in rhino deaths driven by demand for their horn in China and Vietnam. Meanwhile, elephant poaching is at its highest rate ever, also driven primarily by Chinese demand for ivory. The list continues. It is now estimated that more than 100 million sharks are killed for their fins each year; scientists are now confidently predicting the collapse of many shark fisheries. Meanwhile, poaching of big cats (primarily cheetahs) A female striped hyena rescued by K'S PATH in 2010. She was is on the rise, driven by demand from the Middle East. nursed to health from an infant then sent to the Al Ain wildlife park Simply put, the populations of these and many other species are in crisis, and if we don’t act quickly and the middle building creeping around looking for what I firmly, humans will once again cause the extinction of hoped wasn’t an angry primate, when the beam of my another species. flashlight caught the slightest smudge in the dust inside This month, the Convention on International Trade in of an air conditioning unit. A closer look revealed the Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITIES) slight impression of three little baboon prints. will meet in Bangkok to seek solutions to these and

Later, we received a frantic call from one of the people we had spoken to earlier that day: the baboon was inside Lu & Lu Hypermarket, and people were panicking. This time K'S PATH mobilized all of our units and several volunteers, under the assumption we would have to use a dart gun to catch a baboon inside a crowded supermarket; a very dangerous prospect. By the time we arrive at the scene however, workers had chased the baboon back outside. Now we were faced with the prospect of finding and catching a primate in the dark, in a huge open area. Fortunately, we are experts in animal capture, so we went with our training. With such a recent sighting, we were able to more or less track the animals’ movements through eyewitness accounts. This led to a small cluster of buildings near the main entrance to the manufactured-goods area of the market. Here the trail went cold. We split up with flashlights and headlamps to see what we could find. The first search revealed nothing. We were just about ready to give up. I was on top of www.citypageskuwait.com

The story does not end here, however. A baboon lives approximately 35 years, and K’S PATH is now faced with the prospect of caring for yet another baboon, at least our 15th in the last 5 years. But keeping them is no easy endeavor. They are particularly dangerous in groups, and their housing and upkeep are expensive. The K'S PATH sanctuary does not currently enjoy any government or corporate funding, and our options grow more limited with every new wild animal.

The tracks went in, but they didn’t come out. It appeared that she had settled down for the night in the labyrinth of ductwork in an unfinished bank. So we rustled around the building trying to narrow down the location, but she didn’t make a sound. I decided to plan for every eventuality, and we made holes in the ductwork inside the building, set a humane-live-trap inside, and sealed off every opening. We also set traps outside on the chance she might still be loose. Then we settled down to a waiting game, going home and

other issues related to wildlife. More than 170 countries have signed into the convention, thereby promising to abide by it’s agreed upon policies to protect flora and fauna from overexploitation. Among these countries is the State of Kuwait. As a signatory to the convention, Kuwait has agreed to monitor and regulate all of the more than 30,000 species protected by the convention. What this means on a basic level is that signatories to the convention must provide protection tolisted species.

Signatory governments therefore cannot allow the movement or trade in any individual of a species or product derived from any species considered threatened, endangered, or otherwise protected. At the very least, this means inspections at all border crossings, seizure of plants, animals, or products in violation, and care of all living specimens until an alternative arrangement can be found. It also means routine inspection and regulation of live animal and online animal markets. Unfortunately for the species affected, Kuwait is currently failing to meet virtually all of its obligations under the CITIES agreement. Law enforcement officers are either not aware of the rules or choose not to enforce them. If they did enforce the rules, there still would be no place to put seized animals until their future could be decided (the zoo is not adequate in any way, not the least of which is volume). Perhaps the most glaring and public failure to comply with the convention is the presence of illegal wildlife in the so-called ‘Friday Market’ and their listing on public online forums. In fact, you can buy almost any animal in Kuwait. In 2009, our undercover investigators conducted a sting operation that revealed a Eurasian Brown bear, an African Cheetah, a striped hyena, flamingos, several hundred venomous snakes, and several protected parrots for sale on a farm in Kebd. The man selling these animals also listed other animals he could bring, along with their prices. The list included critically endangered White Lions. In that instance, the zoo was in need of a bear and so the law forbidding the sale of wildlife was enacted. He was allowed to keep the other animals. Unfortunately, confiscation of illegal wildlife is all too rare. Meanwhile, a weekend visit to the Friday market will usually reveal wild-caught African Grey parrots, desert tortoise, African crocodile, a wide-range of locally caught birds (all protected by local law), and Hamadryas baboons originating in Saudi Arabia. One can also find vervet, macaque, and other more exotic species on a less regular basis. The list goes on and on. These sales are able to take place in public becausethere is no fear of repercussion. The trade in illegal wildlife is of global concern, and it has very real implications in Kuwait. There is still hope, but only if we all start working together. Visit www.facebook.com/kspathq8 or www. kspath.org to see how you can get involved.

Room 237 This is a documentary that explores the hidden meanings behind "MASTERMIND" Stanley Kubrick’s film The Shining (1980). The film may be over 30 years old but it continues to inspire discussions and mystery. Viewers are still struggling to understand its hidden meanings loved and hated by equal numbers The documentary will be Voice over by different people, film clips, animation and drama. It approaches The Shining from the outlook of five deep thinking. (None of whom are ever shown onscreen — you only hear their voices) The other three assumptions are less reasonable, but more creative and ultimate. “Behind every Queen is a Machiavellian Prince” “It would be well to be reputed liberal.”

I

swallow a lump in my throat once I pick up the white rose I’ve placed over my father’s grave. It is eight or nine, judging by the sun’s luminosity, beaming shafts of bright light in various directions. I lost track of time as I read out of Galen’s That the Best Physician is also a Philosopher in honor of my father’s passing. It’s been near twelve months now, and I read out of father’s science books at the cemetery every Sunday. I see dandelions floating in the gentle breeze. I catch a flower. It reminds me that yesterday, Saturday the 7th of August, 1535, was my birthday, which means I am now sixteen-years-old. Oh dear. Mother will throw a fit if she realizes this. I close my eyes and make a wish—please don’t let mother realize—and then I blow gently on the flower. Its petals disperse with the wind. She would be in the house at this moment, snoring. Elana would be in the pantry, pretending to cook. She didn’t see me leave the house, but even if she enters my chambers and finds my bed to be empty, she will say nothing to my mother. She prays for my misery on every day and every hour apart from Sunday morning and for that, at least, I’m grateful to the frivolous gift. Who gives an old friend a seven-year-old slave? Sometimes I think nobles have so much money they get sick of it, so instead of offering ducats or perhaps some vegetables, they give away their possessions. Here, take the chair I’ve been sitting on for years. You’ll enjoy the imprint I left upon it. A full-grown slave would have been nice, someone to do the grocery shopping for you, someone to accompany you in public without the need for adult supervision, someone to talk to about your latest studies, but my father just thanked the congressman—a something Ziani— and brought the tyke to the family. It’s been hell ever since, because the Ethiopian child forgets that she’s a slave. I stand and dust my black dress. I groan when I notice that the mud stains won’t come out. I can’t go home to wash my dress. My Sunday reprieve ends the moment I leave the cemetery, and Elana, who has been particularly edgy these days, most likely struggling with pubescence, will pounce on me as soon as she discovers it. I pull out the wooden sole of my shoe from the puddle of dirt below and find that even my white ribbons are smeared with mud. Fantastic. When I lift my head back up again I notice Giuseppe at the gate heading in my direction, carrying a bouquet of flowers like a leash of a dog that totters behind. He waves when he sees me. His shoulder-length, sun-kissed hair flows in the wind, the flowers shake left and right. He’s wearing faded green breeches, a white shirt that turned beige from a residue of a life near the sea unfastened all the way down to his bellybutton, a brown leather bag bobs against his hips whose strap crosses his chest diagonally and, I can’t be sure form this distance, but I almost swear that www.citypageskuwait.com

Giuseppe is wearing slippers. I stop and wait for the tall, tanned, Grecian thespian with exposed legs to reach me. Yep. They’re slippers. Green breeches, an open shirt, and slippers: perfect outfit for a cemetery. “Hey!” He says when he is next to me. “Morning.” “Hang on, let me just put these down.” Without taking a step closer he casts the bouquet into the air. It lands on top of my white rose, and rolls down the side of my father’s grave. “Oh! Too close. Alright. Maybe next Sunday.” I walk away. “You are too conservative Maria, a little liberality now and then will do you a world of good. Laugh, it is better than Galen’s bloodletting. Come on. Talk to me. You know I’d die if you stop.” I turn around, readying Galen’s book as a possible weapon. He looks at me with his green eyes and I almost, almost, forget that this is Giuseppe Nini. His eyes wander a moment later and I follow his gaze. He raises his hand and catches a dandelion, brings it to my face, and squints. “The question is,” he says slowly, “if I blow on your frizzy hair the way one blows on this flower, will your brown petals also scatter into the air?” “You’re a mule.” “Mules are indispensible.” I daresay I laugh at his remark and even slow down when I turn to leave again to indicate that I don’t loath his company. I am mad. Of course I am. He just desecrated my father’s grave and mocked my hair. So I’ll hate him forever for both affronts. But I’m not that mad. “You actors aren’t,” I claim. “Oh the acting thing again. You must be so jealous from all the attention I get. A man, in his nineteenth-year, beloved by everything in the village, handsome, strong—” “Don’t you mean everyone?” “Isn’t that what I said?” “No, Giuseppe, you said everything.” “Oh, well, in that case, I’m sticking to it.” We pass the gates. The fishing village has now awakened and the streets, which were scarce a few hours ago, are now teeming with activity. There are too many nationalities, races, and faces. This multiculturalism has been the pride and joy of Corfu, but more and more of us are now conforming to the image of our nobility: Catholic, Venetian. “Where are you going? Church’s that way,” Giuseppe says. “I’m surprised you know where it is.” “I know where it is, just not what’s in it.” He tags along. “But really, where are we heading?” “I need a well,” I say pointing to the filth on my fabric.

{Literature/Short Stories} “Let’s got to port!” he exclaims as if I told him I had nothing planned all day and was dying for a lazy dip in the water. “Some of us have Sunday Service to attend.” Giuseppe tells me I should go home to clean my dress with proper Venetian soap and boiling water like any normal girl, and then he smacks his head theatrically, wondering what he is talking about, because everyone in Corfu knows I’m not normal. “Don’t you dare call me ugly twice in one setting.” “I never said it once.” “And that remark about my hair?” “Is only to indicate that it is the most fascinating variety of the brown and frizzy.” He leans against the wall when we reach the well. He doesn’t even bother to pull up the water bucket for me despite seeing me struggle. So much for courtship. I lay Galen’s book on the edge of the well and dip then heave and pull. I part my legs a little and bend to grab a handful of my dress, scrunching the smeared fabric with my left hand, and, with my other hand, I try to tip the bucket, which rests on the edge of the well, so that it pours a steady stream of water on the mud stain, but not enough to ruin it for service. My right hand jerks accidentally. The bucket knocks my book into the well, and when I shriek in horror, throwing myself at it in a reflexive moment to save my father’s bequeathal, the whole thing tips over and drenches my Sunday dress, all the way down to my mud stained ribbons. I curse in Greek like a man at port who lost both his evening dinner and fishing rod at once. Giuseppe laughs without restraint. “As I was saying, you’re not ugly. You’re just a damn klutz who is totally oblivious to social norms. Who comes to a well on the edge of the village to wash a smear? You could have gone home Maria, or gone to port. It’s right there, you know, just a little further down this path. Here, let me help you.” “No. You’ve done enough already. You pulled out the bucket when I needed it and held it for me as I cleaned my dress, and I can never thank you enough for saving my father’s book! You’re too kind Giuseppe. I shan’t exploit your generosity further.” I even curtsy, spreading my wet dress to full length, showing him the degree of the stain, just to bring shame upon him. “Touchy, Maria, always so quick to rile. Be liberal, a little, that is all I ask.” “Ask nothing of me, Giuseppe. You’re an actor. Your father was a fisherman. And your mother still worships Poseidon. If I’m a klutz who is totally oblivious to social norms, what do you say about yourself? Breeches, open shirt, and slippers! And where? In a cemetery! And why? Because you were visiting my father!” Maybe I shouldn’t be yelling in the open streets like an Armenian grocer. I picture my mother’s face when she sees the stains. A shudder courses through me. Mother thinks my interest in science dilutes my chances of marriage, because, and I quote, “No man wants a woman who thinks like a man.” For a whole year, we’ve played a game of cat and mouse, chasing, escaping, twirling over one another, and dancing around the subject of marriage. She’s been widowed for a year. There are three females in the house. This was decidedly unnatural and required immediate rectification. Last week I even suggested that she remarries. Hey, if we needed a man in the house, it didn’t have to be mine, right? Mother didn’t think so. Giuseppe tries to hold me and I pull away, not too hard, and not too quickly; enough to show him the degree of my anger without severing the thread of this conversation. I’m feeling a little playful today, maybe as a result of reaching sixteen, maybe as an effect of Giuseppe’s greens, but if anyone catches me thusly, my reputation would be ruined. I almost push him away for real when the consequences snap me back to reality, but my Grecian mule pins me to the wall, reiterating my name so fast that it begins to sound like: Mariariamriamira. “What?” I yell, feigning disgust and irritation, forcing myself not to smile. “Would you hate me still after I give you the birthday gift of the century?” “I will hate you till Judgment Day, Giuseppe.” He grins. “Then my dear I’m afraid I’ll have to trash it.” He moves away, pretending to leave. How dramatic. I play along, moving away myself. I look up the street and weigh my options.

69

Giuseppe was right. The port was a better decision than the well at the edge of the village. I could have gotten anyone from the people there to help me with my stain. Like Giuseppe, many people adored my father, but it is too late now for even if I do wash the stain with proper soap, it will never dry in time. I need a change of clothes. “My birthday was yesterday anyway, so your gift is unwelcomed.” “Darling the best things in life require a little patience. Where are you off to now? Look! You’ve gathered the children. They’ll file behind us and sing songs about your stain.” I notice the kids as well heading in our direction, jumping over pavements, and pushing one another merrily, but they don’t file behind us, and they don’t sing songs about my stain. I see Giuseppe’s brothers among them, tiny versions of my Grecian mule, but I also recognize some of the other kids, like the Ottomans’ children. They pass us after they greet me and Giuseppe and continue on to the harbor. I see their little bodies shrinking in the distance, like a painting with da Vinci’s brilliance, showing perspective and capturing sunlight’s penetration of the trees on either side of the street. I love da Vinci most of all because he was a scientist not merely an artisan. I don’t remember where exactly but I recall reading a quote once that moved me. He had said, “We rightly call painting the grandchild of nature and related to God.” It is related to divinity because art attempted to expose nature the way science conveyed the workings of God. Although I’m not much interested in art, I love Leonardo himself, for apart from his contributions to science and rational thinking, he shared my father’s name. Leonardo. God. I miss my father. I try to be strong, pragmatic. Death happens. I know. I believe in science and the inevitability of the end, like the flame on a candle’s wick fizzing out, turning to darkness, sending slivers of smoke into the atmosphaera. But I can’t help how I feel. I can’t help the longing, the pain, the memories that strike at the worst moments. “So? Shall I toss that in the well?” When I look back at the Grecian mule, I see that he is holding his brown leather bag in front of me. “The bag?” “No Maria. What’s in it.” “Giuseppe, I don’t have time for your games. I need to see if Caterina will loan me a dress before I run into mother.” “Liberal, liberal!” He cries again and for the life of me I cannot discern his meaning. What did he expect me to do? Kiss him out on the street? “Look, here, just take it. It’ll be the last time we see each other anyway and I’ve been dying to give this to you all morning.” My curiosity peaks. I peer into the leather bag as he pulls it out. When I read the engraving on the cover I feel like I just died and came back to life again. Maybe life doesn’t fizzle out of a wick after all. I squeal and grab the book. “Oh my lord, Giuseppe how did you get this?” He stands there, smug, fists curled at his hips. “You may call me Prince Giuseppe from now on. And you are most welcomed.” I wait, struggling to prevent my pursed lips from sliding into a smile, betraying my true emotions. I can’t give this thespian the satisfaction of knowing that he has impressed me. He exhales with evident melodrama, letting his arms hang low. “Fine, fine. I give up.” His attitude changes a moment later. “I couldn’t bear it when Leonardo died and you…you were just not…you, so I planned it then. I paid Arturo and told him to look for it when he went to Venice. I told him it was for you. His ship only arrived this morning. That’s why I’m late by the way in giving it to you. I had the flowers all bought and wrapped last night but the ship didn’t dock. Do you like it?” “I love it, Giuseppe, I love it so much!” I hug the red leather to my chest, the words: “Dialogue on Adam and Eve by Isotta Nogarola” engraved in gold are pressed against my heart and in that moment of blissful surrender I think I might be a little liberal after all. I lean in to give the Greek a gentle peck, and then I hear my mother shrieking my name behind me. March 2013

BOOK CLUB Eclipse As the months go by, we continue reviewing the epic love story of Edward and Bella with book three of the Twilight Saga: Eclipse (2007). This book is one of four other books in the series, followed by a fifth book called The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner (2010) which talks about one small character that was presented in Eclipse (2007). After almost losing Edward to the Vultory (Vampire Royalty) in New Moon, and after Edward thought he lost Bella forever through a vague vision from Alice (Edward’s Sister), the unusual couple faces yet another Dilemma. An old vampire grudge over Bella sends a whole group of vampire new borns toward Forks to hunt and kill Bella. With Bella’s life being under a threat once more and with her graduation approaching a decision has to be made about her life, the forces of werewolves and vampires unite to stand against those new borns in order to save Bella’s life as well as people in Forks. However, a declaration of love from Jacob Black sets Bella’s world to an unbalanced spin and sends Edward to a huge jealous rage while he tries to declare his own love for Bella through a more traditional fashion. This sets Bella to be more confused about how she really feels about these two different men. In this book Edward has to put aside his jealousy to allow Jacob to try and help keep Bella safe, because what’s most important to both werewolf and vampire is Bella’s safety. Among all that, Bella realizes that she was just trying to figure out herself and it was never a choice between two people, Edward or Jacob because www.citypageskuwait.com

she knew who she loved from the start and who she will always love, who she considered part of her family and who she considered the greatest love of her existence.

Next Month...

“It had not been Edward and Jacob that I’d been trying to force together; it was the two parts of myself, Edward’s Bella and Jacob’s Bella. But they could not exist together, and I never should have tried.” – Bella Swan In this book Stephenie Meyer captures the true essence of friendship and unity towards one common good cause as well as the immortality of this love story. Overlooking our differences in order to stand in front of one common enemy for the greater good or to protect the ones we love.In this book two battles go on: a love battle and a battle between immortals and werewolves, both equally catastrophic.

Next month, we will be reviewing Breaking Dawn, Twilight Saga book four. The epic love story of Edward and Bella is totally out of this world, it deserves an equally epic ending. With more dilemmas and greater surprises, will it ever be smooth sailing for those two? You will have to keep reading to find out.

March Book Releases March is a month when there is a mix of heavy winter reads and light spring break titles. These are the new books that have buzz for the month.

The Burgess Boys

Telling the Bees

From the Pulitzer Prize winning author of Olive Kitteridge comes a new novel -- The Burgess Boys. The Burgess Boys are two brothers whose father is killed in a freak accident when they are young. They flee their small Maine town for New York as soon as they are adults, but they are forced to return when their sister calls them for help with her teenage son. When they return home, they must deal with their past and the dynamics of family relationships.

Telling the Bees by Peggy Hesketh is a debut novel that seems as if it might appeal to book clubs. It is the story of of an eighty-something year old beekeeper, Albert, who has spent his life as a bachelor, but has a deep and complicated relationship with a friend, Claire. When Claire is killed in a burglary, Albert must work through his memories and their past.

Elizabeth Haynes

How to Get Filthy Rich in Rising Asia

Elizabeth Haynes is a bestselling author of psychological suspense novels in the U.K. This past June, Harper published her first novel, Into the Darkest Corner. Her next book, Dark Tide, is the story of a woman who saves up to buy a houseboat and start a new life. Things are looking up when she gets the boat, but then a dead body floats into the harbor, and it is someone Genevieve knows from a secret second job as a dancer at a club. Is their relationship a coincidence or something more sinister? Fans of Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn might enjoy this up and coming author.

How to Get Filthy Rich in Rising Asia by Mohsin Hamid, author of The Reluctant Fundamentalist, is part love story, part examination of the costs and benefits of economic transformation in Asia. The novel is about a boy who goes from rural poverty to be a corporate tycoon selling water. He is enamored with a woman who is also climbing the corporate ladder, and their paths cross again and again throughout the novel.

Six Years

Middle C

Harlan Coben delivers a stand alone thriller for those who need some spring break beach reading. Six Years gets its title from the amount of time since the woman Jake loves married another man, Todd. Jake has kept his promise to leave them alone, but he has never stopped loving Natalie. When he sees Todd's obituary, he decides to go to the funeral. There, he finds out that Natalie was not really Todd's wife and that he's been lied to. As he tries to find Natalie, more of what he knows to be true becomes suspect and his life becomes endangered.

Gass' last novel came out 17 years ago, so there is a lot of excitement around this new release. Middle C starts in Austria in 1938 and moves to England and then Ohio. A man takes his family to London to escape impending Nazi occupation of his country, but then he mysteriously disappears. His family is relocated to Ohio, where his son grows into a piano prodigy and grapples with his identity in light of feelings of abandonment. There are themes of identity and truth.

A Thousand Pardons

Never Too Far

A Thousand Pardons by Jonathan Dee follows a woman whose husband makes a public mistake that destroys their family and everything they have worked for. The protagonist moves their daughter to New York and takes a job in PR, but she must still face the fallout from her past and work through what it means to forgive and how to reach her increasingly distant daughter. Dee's last novel, The Privileges, was a finalist for the 2011 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction.

He had held a secret that destroyed her world. Everything she had known was no longer true. Blaire couldn’t stop loving him but she knew she could never forgive him. Now, she was back home and learning to live again. Moving on with life‌ until something happened to send her world spinning once again. What do you do when the one person you can never trust again is the one that you need to trust so desperately? You lie, hide, avoid, and pray that your sins never find you out.

A mother’s worst nightmare As I watched my daughter leave for the first time, I could feel my heart breaking. ‘Don’t forget to call me when you land,” I said. She ran towards me for one last hug and I could not let her go, I wanted to hold onto her forever. ‘I’ll be fine mom,” she whispered into my ear. I wanted to protect her from the world because the world could be a cruel place to be in, but at some point I knew I couldn’t always shelter her, she was twenty-one and it was time for me to set her free. She was travelling for the first time without me, she wasn’t a child anymore. She never called me, days later and I was still waiting to hear from her. I grew inpatient and worried. Every time someone knocked on the door, I would jump expecting the worst. Expecting the police to be standing on my doorstep with bad news. Hours felt like days, days felt like years. I was uneasy, scared and I needed to know if my little girl was okay. Five days later and I still heard nothing from her, the police were searching. I grew insane. I sat by the window looking out, waiting and waiting. All I could do was pray. ‘God, watch over my girl. Protect her. Please make sure she’s safe and bring her back to me.’ I knew God would listen to my prayers, he always did. To not know where your child is and if she is okay, is a mother’s worst nightmare. My heart was in pieces and my mind was exhausted. Where was she? Is she alive? Is she scared? I needed answers. I needed my daughter back. A week passed and there was no sign from her. I grew weak, barely able to leave the bed. Crying drained all my energy, I was helpless. I slept in her bedroom with a photo of her under the pillow, I could still feel her presence in the room. On Tuesday I got a phone call that would change my life forever. “Hello, mom?” The two words I was waiting to hear since the day she left. “Mom, I am so sorry, I lost my phone and lost all my contacts. I used another phone to text you and I didn’t realise till yesterday that the number I sent the text to was the wrong number. I am so sorry mom, I hope you weren’t worrying.” I was too relieved to be angry with her, she was okay and that was all that mattered. I couldn’t help but cry with happiness. I never www.citypageskuwait.com

wanted to experience that horrible feeling ever again. “God, thank you,” I whispered. As soon as she came back from her holiday, I stayed by her side for hours, not wanting to leave her out of my sight. I kept hugging her and stroking her long brown hair. I was a mother who knew how it felt to lose a daughter for a while and I never wanted to be in that situation again. My daughter is my everything and every minute I have with her is the happiest minute of my life. Children grow up and we can’t always watch over them, they grow up and become adults but as a mother, we never stop protecting them or worrying. It’s in our nature, after all they will always be our babies.

Names From the Past Part IV

So many emotions that Hakim thought he was incapable of came forward as he froze in place looking down at the space in the ground where his friend was and had been for a while now. With effort he pushed away images of Ezra’s lonely and decaying body. A hint of guilt. Guilty for not visiting more often. Guilty for not visiting at all. It was true he had the number of the grave site - given to him by Ezra’s father - for as long as he could remember. But Hakim never visited. Denial was what he thought it was but finally after so many years he knew the reason why. It was lingering within his soul underneath all the reasons and explanations.

shouldn’t let the past haunt you, for the past is the past and you should learn from it and not go back to it and try to fix it...”

Guilt. Oh yes. The creature that had been haunting him from the moment of Ezra’s passing was Guilt.

As he kept talking his age seemed to bounce back and forth.

It was as if his brother and only childhood friend knew that he was coming and waited for all these years.

Younger.

Do I know you? Startled, Hakim looked around. Nothing but endless grave sites surrounded by a barbed fence. He looked behind him and saw the security booth. Surely he heard the voice. Do I know you? the voice beckoned once again. Of all the afflictions Hakim thought he would inevitably catch, insanity wasn’t one of them. But he was sure it wasn’t his imagination. It was real. Hakim closed his eyes, perked his ears and listened. Do you make it a habit to ignore strangers? He flipped his head to the voice that was suddenly behind him. It was a man dressed in traditional attire that looked a little to lose for him. As if he had suddenly lost weight and didn’t have time to get properly fitted clothes. It was hard to tell the man’s age. He looked like he was in his early twenties, but with every movement he seemed to age. Deep aging lines would appear on his face only to disappear a second later. “Sorry I guess I didn’t see you,” Hakim heard himself saying. “Don’t worry about it, you are not the first to. Forget me I mean,” he answered. “People visiting their beloved around here tend to not focus on their surroundings.” Hakim took notice of the man’s army-like posture. It was as if he was standing to attention. The man extended his hand and met with Hakim’s. “Ismael, I have been watching over the area for as long as I can remember.” “Hakim, just here vis…” “Visiting a friend,” Ismael interrupted. “A friend you probably have not come to visit in a long time, if ever. Someone you were probably never separated from until he met his fate. Someone you thought you loved but didn’t know how much you actually loved them until you lost them. Well that’s just the circle of life my friend. I know it’s a cliché but it is very true. ” Hakim took a deep breath thinking that of all things, he ran into some old, or was it young, man who liked to tell stories and pose as the town oracle. Ismael, not noticing that he was losing his audience kept going. “Some regrets maybe? Here to redeem yourself? You

Older. For a few seconds he looked a little familiar but not long enough for Hakim to put his finger on it. “…expressing their love to the ones they lost. I see many people come and go from all walks of life. But they come for the wrong reasons…” Just as Hakim was about to put an end to this, Ismael caught his attention. “If you think you are coming to explain yourself or apologize, you are on the wrong path friend. You would have travelled many miles across lands for nothing. And what is worse is that you will end up with nothing. Just the same way you started I’m afraid.” Ismael was shaking his head in disappointment like a father would to a son who he caught with a cigarette. Now he wanted Ismael to continue but didn’t know how to ask. He did not want to sound like he was buying into this man’s “visions.” Ismael continued as if reading Hakim’s mind. “Indeed apologies cleanse the soul, but to travel this far to deliver one after all these years is nothing short of selfish.” Ismael flashed Hakim a look with the corner of his eye knowing that he probably struck a chord. The right chord. “I never thought of it that way. I thought I owed it to Ezra to explain why…” “You do not owe Ezra any more than you owe anyone else in this place,” Ismael interrupted gesturing to the vast cemetery as he spoke.

Once again, as if in his mind, Ismael answered. “Jacob.” Hakim nodded. A full understanding passed between them as Hakim put the piece of paper on Ismael’s palm. And now Ismael’s face was gentler, kinder and more delicate. And although he looked younger and almost juvenile, eyes were displayed the history and future of the entire world. How much has this man seen. Ismael smiled and understood what Hakim was thinking. He let him look into his eyes a few second more. Ezra? And then it was gone like a painting behind frosted glass that did not want to be read any longer. “It’s getting dark Hakim, we should be on our way.” Hakim did not notice but now that Ismael mentioned it, indeed the sun was setting. It looked like they only had thirty more minutes of sunlight. Without any ‘goodbyes’ Ismael turned around and started to walk away. With each step Hakim seemed to be getting a little confused as if he had just woken up from a deep sleep. He was forgetting the past few hours he had spent talking to this man. Ismael was pulling the memories with him as he left. “Hey, you forgot to tell me your name!” Hakim shouted at the man who seemed to have covered a vast distance although he was only walking. A faint whisper responded, “My name is Isa…” And he was gone.

To be continued next month...

“Ezra is gone but not absent. He knows. He has journeyed with you and has been your strength for all this time. You just didn’t care to listen.” The cork within Hakim that had been bottling up all the emotions finally popped and he burst into tears. Ever since Ezra’s death, Hakim had never felt him so close. But he was. Ezra was here. He could feel him. It was as if Ezra’s scent overtook the whole cemetery. “He knows,” Ismael reassured him placing his hand on Hakim’s shoulder. “Now go. Go and use these few days to rebuild your bridges. There is one that needs your attention.” Hakim lifted his head from his palms and looked into Ismael’s eyes. The familiarity was there again. Then gone. You can’t possibly know he thought to himself. February 2013 March 2013

Going out for dinner or lunch with friends, when trying to lose weight, can be a little bit daunting. Nonetheless, the next time your friends want to meet up with you to grab a bite, suggest Applebee’s. This international casual dinning restaurant just launched its Under 550 Calories menu and it’s sure to satisfy you and entice those around you to start eating healthy. Applebee’s new addition of this menu has made Kuwait the first country in the Middle East to initiate a healthy menu. All of the Applebee’s dishes have been certified to have 550 calories or less. Four of these meals contain shrimp; one also has chicken and two come with a halal steak. Not only is the menu diverse in terms of meats, but also it varies in flavors, bring in www.citypageskuwait.com

FOOD Tasting

There’s nothing light about the flavors on Applebee’s new menu

a little bit for everyone, from spicy to sweet, to a very juicy steak. To determine the calories on each dish, all five meals on the new menu were sent to a food-testing lab. The four day process, determines the calories of each individual plate by blending all the components of each meal, making sure everything is mixed well, then they tests for the proteins, fats and carbohydrates individually and calculate the total amount of calories. CityPages had the pleasure to try all five items on their new menu, and to the waitress’ great recommendation, added a citrus mojito with fresh slices of orange and lemon, to complement the meal. We started with the Roasted Garlic Sirloin. This 7oz. sirloin is marinated in garlic and served over sautéed onions. It is accompanied with herbed potatoes and a grilled portobello mushroom with a creamy sauce and spinach. This meal doesn’t contain oil, which makes this the perfect dish for those looking to enjoy a juicy steak, along with some potatoes to add a carbohydrate into the meal. I personally liked the steak on this dish because it was seared to perfection, so all the steaks juices were kept inside, and this added more flavor to every bite. Next we had the Zesty Roma Chicken and Shrimp served with red potatoes, chopped zucchini, red onions, Roma tomatoes, basil and pepper, with Parmesan cheese over it. The shrimps had been blackened, and the chicken breast was March 2013

grilled. This dish contained the best shrimp out of all four meals with shrimp, maybe it was because the tomato sauce, which tasted almost but not quite to a marinara sauce, gave it an extra pop to the shrimp. What I liked about this dish was the combination of the chicken and the shrimp. Although I always thought I couldn’t have them together, but Applebee’s chefs sure made this work in a very tasty way. Also, I liked the potatoes, which were fried, and what’s impressive is even with those fried potatoes, the shrimp and the chicken, this dish was still less than 550 calories! The next dish was the Roma Pepper Steak and Shrimp. Again, this dish contained no oil, just simple non-stick spray to sear the steak. This dish also came with Portobello mushroom, but this time it was a creamy cheese garlic sauce with artichoke. I was sold on this dish, solely on the idea that it had Parmesan cheese all over the cap of the portobello mushroom. The steak was very tender and juicy and the shrimp was a great addition to keep this dish nutritious and exiting. So far, these first three dishes were consistent in bringing in the portobello mushroom and the potatoes. I thought the rest of the dishes would also dance around these ingredients, but I was in for a good surprise. As I saw the Cranberry Orange Shrimp I thought it looked like a salad, but I was also in a little bit of

www.citypageskuwait.com

a shock. This dish did not have the potatoes or portobello mushroom; instead it had a generous portion of sautéed shrimp, and it was refreshing to see green beans. The green on the plate made the little pieces of dry cranberries stand out. Not only was this dish colorful and appealing to the eye, but also I was surprised to find rice underneath the green beans. This dish was Kinda’s favorite, no wonder it was because it had it all. It had the crispness of the green beans, a little spiciness on the rice, a hint of sweetness and citrus from the dry cranberries and

orange glaze and the tenderness of the shrimp. Last, but not least, we had the Poblano Shrimp Pasta. It was nice to see Applebee’s had managed to bring a pasta dish to this healthy menu. The dish came with a combination of roasted poblano pepper and seasoned shrimp, fresh pico and roasted red peppers with freshly chopped cilantro. I’d recommend this dish to those that can handle some heat and are looking for the type of energy that

only pasta can provide. The dish, made with whole-wheat linguini also came with a slice of lemon. Use the lemon and squeeze it into the dish, it helps bring down the heat, without taking away from the flavor of the shrimp or the creamy sauce on the pasta. At the end we were all pleasantly surprised at how much we ate and how full we were, but still felt energized and not at all heavy. All portions are sufficient to fill you up but not weight you down. It was good to have all the veggies on the dishes, still with their skins on, which made these dishes not only healthy, but very nutritious as well. It’s amazing to think all these dishes were so fulfilling, so tasty and yet

ARMANI JEANS Spring Summer 2013 collection - ECO ICE Armani Jeans has always been attentive to contemporary issues and problems and for next Spring/Summer the brand introduces the innovative Eco Ice treatment. Through a unique process, the faded quality of the jeans is obtained by injecting dry ice at a very high speed into the fabric, which it reacts to through thermal shock. Once it collides with the denim’s surface, the ice turns into its gaseous state, without humidity or producing residual matter. Eco Ice is a procedure with numerous advantages: it is antibacterial, uses limited quantities of water and has a low impact on the environment because there are no residual materials from the production process. It is an entirely Italian made process and a testament to how aesthetical sophistication and respect for the environment can happily co-exist with innovative design.

OMEGA Ladymatic at fashion’s forefront with new vibrant dials The fashion-forward design of the Ladymatic collection, paired with the innovative OMEGA Co-Axial calibre 8520 within each of its timepieces, has become even more impossibly exquisite with the newest models featuring bold, attractive dials. Known for its captivating look, the Ladymatic has been a prestigious example of the brand’s style and invention since its launch in 2010. These striking OMEGA Ladymatic timepieces have a 34 mm polished stainless steel case with white, black or rose ceramic between the decorative wave and inner casebody. Each is presented on either a matching satin-brushed leather strap or a polished stainless steel bracelet. The dials, with their enchanting Supernova pattern, are made even more brilliant with 11 diamond-set indexes in facetted 18K white gold diamond-shaped holders, and there is a date window at the 3 o’clock position. The polished alpha-shaped minute, hour and seconds hands are crafted from 18K white gold and the minute and hour hands are coated with white SuperLumiNova. A domed, scratch-resistant sapphire crystal with anti-reflective treatment on both sides protects the evocative dials.

The “Brilliant Omega Cut” diamond found on the screw-in crown is complemented by the wearer’s choice of a dazzling bezel with diamonds arranged in a snow-set pattern, or the pure and elegant polished stainless steel bezel.

The OMEGA Constellation Sedna Sedna™ gold is the name OMEGA has given to a new alloy that stunningly blends three elements: gold, copper and palladium. It is an 18K rose gold, meaning that it has a minimum gold content of 75%. Sedna™’s unique rose colour is a result, in part, of just the right proportion of copper: Its palladium content helps to ensure that the reddish hue of Sedna™ gold will be particularly long lasting. It takes its name from a trans-Neptunian object which astronomers called Sedna – the same name as an Inuit goddess who is said to live at the bottom of the Arctic Ocean. The surface of the orbiting object has been described as one of the reddest in our Solar System. Swatch Group assembled a team of top metallurgists and scientists from several of its companies with the shared goal of creating an 18K rose gold alloy whose colour would be not only beautiful but enduring. Sedna™ gold – developed 100% in house by the Swatch Group team – is the patented, breathtaking confirmation of their success.

{Interview/Designer}

ELISHA FRANCIS London based jewellery designer Elisha Francis studied her Foundation Diploma in Art & Design at Camberwell College of Arts and Interior Design and Retail Design at London College of Communication. She is now an Undergraduate at London Metropolitan University studying a BA in Jewellery Design. Elisha has been designing and making jewellery since August 2003 when a trip to John Lewis’s haberdashery department inspired her first pair of earrings and it was then that she knew exactly how she could turn her talents for design into a business venture. In 2009 she decided to set up as a limited company and went to GLE onelondon where she was assigned a business mentor who helped Elisha achieve this goal as well as awarding her with a grant. GLE referred Elisha to BBI (Black Business Initiative) who also supported Elisha with her buinsess and also awarded her a grant. Elisha went on to be nominated and won an award from GLE for Innovation in the Creative Sector in March 2010. Inspired by vintage glamour her designs are timeless pieces made using semi-precious stones, swarovski crystals and freshwater pearls.

I love working with gemstones, pearls and crystals, however my next collections will include more textile techniques, as this has been a passion of mine long before I started jewellery. My time at university has helped me acquire the skills to fuse my two passions.

valuable tools in business, ask questions, apply for internships and don't be afraid to start. Many people have great ideas but never but them into action because they are afraid of failing. Ever failure is a possibility the learn something new.

If you could sum up your look and aesthetic in three words, what would they be and why?

Who would you most like to see in your designs?

I went to my local library and borrowed some books on jewellery making, which led to a series of short courses and now I am in my final year of my BA in Jewellery Design at Sir John's Cass in London. I have studied alongside starting up my jewellery business, which has been an exciting challenge.

Glamorous, Modern, Timeless - I am a huge fan of the 1940s and 1950s Style icons such as Audrey Hepburn and Elizabeth Taylor. I design jewellery that can translate across fashion trends because I believe style should be timeless and jewellery is a luxury that should last forever...

There are so many gorgeous women that I would love to see in my designs, Lana Del Rey, Rihanna, Janelle Monae, Beyonce and Rita Ora.

What do you love most about designing and creating your own jewelry?

Is a jewelry making business expensive to start and manage?

The thing I love most is seeing people in my designs; I get a real buzz every time.

Fortunately for me I was awarded two grants from GLE and BBI to start-up my jewellery business. They are both great organizations that I got in touch with about my ideas and they helped me write up my business plan and secure business start-up grants. With all businesses the challenge is reaching and building up your customer base.

How did you get your start in jewelry designing and what have you learned over the course of being a designer? A trip to John Lewis haberdashery department led to me making my first pair of earrings. I've always had boxes full of beads, sequins and trinkets and I stumbled across a selection of jewellery findings and my obsession began!

Tell us of the awards you have earned and other achievements? I won an award from GLE for ' Innovation in the Creative Sector' in 2010 which was a great achievement. I have also been nominated for 'Best Accessories Designer' by BEFTA What are some of your favorite materials to work with and create with? www.citypageskuwait.com

What advice can you give someone who wants to start this business? I would say get as much information for business startup companies many of which give free mentoring and skills workshops. Networking is one of the most

What is the most exciting part of your job? The most exciting part is making the designs come to life, from an idea, to a sketch into the final piece of jewellery It gives me a tingling feeling every time, I have woke in the middle of the night on many occasions to jot down an idea that I've had whilst sleeping. I'm designing in my head 24/7 What is the hardest part of your job? The hardest part is the admin side because it involves no creativity but it is essential for a successful business. Where all is your jewellery displayed and available to buy? My jewellery is available to buy online through my website: www.elishafrancis.com I will also be showcasing my design at High Street Fashion Week which is taking place in April at Boxpark, Shoreditch London.

{Interview/Designer}

Where do you get your inspiration for new designs? It all depends on the project, I find a lot of inspiration from old Hollywood movies, and photographs I've taken on my travels or sometimes I work directly with the materials and develop collections from samples that I come up with from experimenting. What are you working on now? Do you have any new projects? At the moment I am working on my final collection for my Graduate show at university which will take place in June 2013. The concept behind it is 'Warrior Princess' which is a mix of City style and Timeless Elegance. Where is your best place to escape? I have not had much time to escape, but I think it would be whilst traveling. I recently went on a trip to Rome which was a great way to source new inspiration and new experiences at the same time. Ford and Lincoln Vehicles Cited for Favourable Cost of Ownership by KBB.com Owners of Ford and Lincoln vehicles get a pat in the back for choosing to buy Ford Mustang, Ford Mustang GT, Ford Explorer, Lincoln MKX and Lincoln MKT as the five models were recently recognised in the2013 Kelley Blue Book “5-Year Cost to Own Awards”. The award from KBB.com intends to highlight total spend on vehicles or cost to own a vehicle in the US, way beyond the purchase price. It factors in financing, insurance, fuel consumption, maintenance, depreciation and other extra expenses that most owners do not include in their calculations when buying a vehicle. Maintenance cost, another driver of total ownership cost, is significantly lower with Ford vehicles according to Chris Noel, Ford Middle East’s regional director for Customer Service. “Over the past years oil change cycle has been increased from 5,000km to 10,000km which translates to lowering maintenance cost at least half of what was normally spent. In Kuwait, Arabian Motors Group, the local Ford and Lincoln importer-dealer, currently offers a 5 year/100,000km manufacturer’s warranty and 24-hour free roadside assistance anda 5 year/100,000km powertrain warranty on select vehicles, giving Ford owners complete peace of mind.Lincoln products in Kuwait are offered with a standard 5 year/100,000km manufacturer’s warranty along with a6 year/110,000km powertrain warranty, a 5 year/100,000km 24 hour free roadside assistance, as well as a 3 year/60,000km free service and maintenance package.
