My Dear friends and readers,

Hello loyal CityPages readers,

April is the Health and Autism awareness month. We all have to take

April has been a busy month for many of us who hold their primary jobs in the private sector, and I am one of those people who wish that this could one day be my one and only passion. However, someone has to pay the bills, and so I have been running myself ragged trying to keep up. I think perhaps a full check up is in order to make sure that my body can keep up with my mind. Health is probably the only thing that truly matters and keeping bodies and minds free of stress and illness is a big and sole responsibility. We are the masters of our own vessels, so keeping fit, eating healthy and avoiding stress are all great proactive ways to reduce the risk of some of the most common ailments which plague us modern day human beings. We are also highlighting World Autism Day in this issue because we know how hard it can be for the parents of children born with this unexplained auto-immune disorder to raise and care for their children, hence anything we at CityPages can do to raise more awareness regarding this affliction we are happy to do. Read the special interview with Dr. Samira Al Saad the Founder and Director of the Kuwait Center for Autism, and find out what this wonderful woman (who is also a Board Member of the World Autism Organization) is doing for this cause here in Kuwait. On a lighter note Dr. Adel Quttainah tells us what the psychological benefits of Plastic Surgery can do for someone. I believe a person should look after their bodies from the inside out, which I refer to as “upkeep.” He is the right person to see for addressing issues relating to the issues of the vain kind. Last but not least, I have to say my interview with Jewelry designer Lulwa Al-Terkait was a fun and engaging one, featuring lots of laughter and ‘girl power’ information sharing, and I must say she is quite the firecracker. Plus, her jewelry is to die for. I thank her for taking the time out of her busy schedule to have coffee with me. That reminds me, I’ve got to call her to ask her about those earrings. I wish everyone a superb month ahead, have fun, laugh, live and don’t forget to schedule time with your doctor for that annual health tune up!

actions or make a difference during this month toward our health issues. It is also very important to keep up with the medical news that affects our health and well-being. That’s why CityPages partners with the best of the best in the Medical field and I personally would love to send my personal thanks and appreciation to our medical partners: Asnan Tower, Asnan Kids, Yiaco Apollo Medical Center, Beverly Hills Medical Center, The Cosmetic Surgery Clinic, and International Optique Co. Our medical experts will keep you in closer touch with everything that’s happening right now in the ever changing field of medicine and will answer all your questions and you will know more about their services and their specialized doctors. CityPages will give you and your family the access to the best specialist in Kuwait in Dentistry, Dermatology, Eye care, Nutrition and many other health concerns. We will always take care of you and will keep looking for the best to serve you. At the end I really wish everybody the healthiest life ever. Don’t stress yourself and enjoy reading your CityPages!

Far is F. Al-Obaid

Leadership has always been a key quality for Faris, which he came to realize with over 7 years of International experience, having worked in some of the most prestigious institutions, such as the British Parliament and the White House. Born in Paris, France, Faris pursued his education in Bachelor of Arts, from the American University of Paris in International Communications, with an emphasis on integrated marketing communications. He also minored in International Business Administration and Political Communications, graduating with honors: Magna Cum Laude. He, subsequently, pursued a Master of Arts from the American University of Paris in Global Communications graduated: Cum Laude. After residing in Paris for more than 13 years, Faris mastered language proficiency in the Arabic, French, and English language and continues to excel. As part of Community Service to Kuwait, Faris has been an active member of Lothan Youth Achievement Center since 1998. Being Ambassador to the European region, providing unique opportunities for youth to enhance their careers, encouraging youth to contribute to their own communities even from a distance and involving youth in expanding LOYAC’s operations and service have been some of the major areas of LOYAC’s focus. With passion and interest in the British Political System, an Internship Program at the British Parliament gave him an opportunity to carry out general office administration and an opportunity to attend meetings and events in the Parliament, in addition to the high level meetings, he got the opportunity to personally meet British Prime Minister Tony Blair, Gordon Brown, and Deputy Prime Minister John Prescott. During the school days at the American School of Kuwait, at the age of 17, he had to nominate 10 students from ASK for the Young Adventure Program at BP, U.A.E which granted Faris an overall responsibility for 22 students, lecturing on leadership skills, team work, organizing activities, developing an environmental initiative for private schools. Besides having had the opportunity to work with Young Adventure Program at BP, U.A.E, Faris also had the privilege of attending an International Leadership Program at WYSE International which is a UN affiliated program for leadership in Italy. He was also the president of the Youth Program at Injaz, in charge of “A2Development Project.” In addition, Faris also worked as a Research Officer at the American Arab Anti-Discrimination Center (ADC) in Washington DC, which included performing research on different issues for congress meetings, working on developmental plans and actively participating in all high level meetings including FBI, Homeland Security, US Congress and Department of Justice. Faris enjoys networking with people from diverse backgrounds with different cultures and personalities, bridging different cultures, relating to people and public speaking. International Business, Politics, International Affairs, Social Networking and Sports have always been his areas of interest. In his free time he loves to travel, read, dive and anything that includes beach activities!

www.citypageskuwait.com

Recently Faris has been nominated by the World Banking Institute (WBI) in Washington D.C, to attend a high level leadership course in "Frontiers in Development policy" in partnership with the World Renowned Korean Development Institute (KDI School) - "It's the Harvard of development schools", he said. It's basically a cutting edge leadership course with a holistic approach and practical focus for senior government officials. Al-Obaid will be the first from Kuwait and the Middle East to attend such a course and most likely the youngest and will be heading there next week!

Scenario: With Faris mastering three languages; he comes to discover that he’s got a fourth hidden language, which is the language of animals. Now he has the ability to understand, and talk to different animals using their own language! Being the diplomatic and social person that you are, tell us how would you use this talented gift in your everyday life?

Photographer: Ahmed Emad

"I would start by interacting with all the animals and really try to understand their purpose in this world, understand their needs and wants and try to align them with ours. I would try to create an equal world where they would be treated with love and respect, where they could contribute positively to the growth of humanity with a voice. I would also want to understand, learn and grow from them I believe there are a lot of wisdom, survival skills and courage to gain from animals in our world, each one with their unique piece of insight."

Posta Plus & The Student Center, innovations in courier services and digital printing Mohammad Al Najdi, the man in charge to maintain these two concepts, talks about the early starts of both services, the challenges, achievements and future projects to keep Kuwait’s services growing and expanding into other countries.

What was the concept behind the opening of Posta Plus? The concept behind the opening of Posta Plus was to be able develop the mailing services in Kuwait at par with its international counterpart. To penetrate the international market to give way for the private sector to shine in the mailing services field. What was the concept behind the opening of The Student Center? The idea of “One Shop, One Stop” was the concept behind the opening of the The Student Center without comprising the high quality of printing services. How the idea about these services came to your mind? The idea came to mind when I saw the growing demand for the services we are offering and drew the concept for The Student Center from there. Posta Plus started in 2005 and I joined with them in 2007 as Deputy CEO. Its founder and board created the concept for the company and with proper business strategy, I am here to continue what they have started.

www.citypageskuwait.com

No fears – I am a very optimistic person always willing to accept challenges and failures that come my way.

to mention that right now we are very proud to have become a common name in the market in terms of digital printing and courier services.

How long did these projects take from concept to reality?

What made these two projects a success?

What were the fears about the project?

For the Student Center, three months while for Posta Plus it took six months. What were the motivational elements about these projects? My dedication for work is the most important motivational element for any project I do. Any difficulties that you faced at the start? Any business is not immune to difficulties at the start. Initially the bureaucracy made it difficult for all the paper works that needed to be done like the clearances, permits and all.

I think proper strategy, good execution and being true to what we say we are for the quality of services we give to our customers, coupled with our people’s dedication made these projects a success. My way of monitoring the daily business or everyday activities helped a lot in to realize our success today. What are you feelings as the Chairman of this company? I am very proud of the company and my people for what we have achieved today, to see how the company started as a very small business and attain the large success now. How has the company grown since its beginning and what are your future plans?

How was the instant response from the market?

With the continuous yearly growth, the company has no other direction but UP.

Boasting aside, it was great right from our first day not

Our future plan is for the company to also cover all

What lessons did you learn on your way to becoming a Chairman? The most important lesson I learned and constantly bear to mind is that nothing is impossible. You can always achieve your goals and targets by trusting God and maintaining your good work ethics, dedication and loyalty.

You message for CityPages Readers? I advise them to use Posta Plus and The Student Center services to experience and be a living proof to the kind of quality services we offer. April 2013

Spring Clean Your Life! It's that time of year again, when the flowers are blooming, the sun is shining beautifully and winter is almost over (or in Kuwait’s case; definitely over!). Spring brings with it the promise of new life and a fresh start not just for nature but also to our own lives. So let’s jump on the bandwagon and spring clean our lives!

Great! Now you have the intention, but your not sure where or how to start. As usual I am here to help with a new list! Here are my tips of how to spring clean your life: 1. Manage your time better: We all waste time each week doing things we don’t really want to do. Write out a diary of how you spend your week. Once this time is in front of you, you can judge what you can cut out of your life and make room for new activities. After this is done you will have room to change your life and move it in a new direction. 2. Modify your diet: Now is the time for healthy living and changing the unhealthy lifestyle you may have lived in the past! Eating healthy, wholesome food will improve how you feel about yourself and give you extra confidence. Here are some tips: • Choose unprocessed food. • Instead of buying ready meals or eating out, why not try cooking a wonderful meal at home?

• Reduce your sugar intake. You can start by cutting out fizzy drinks and stop adding sugar into your coffee or tea. • Try to fit five pieces of fruits and vegetables into your diet every day. 3. Clear your home: "It's important to make your space beautiful," says Brazilian healer Antonia Ruhl. "Plant things in the garden, bring flowers into the home and light some candles. Steam clean your house – wash your curtains and your walls and clear out your cupboards." Household mess can contribute greatly to stress in our lives so get cleaning and watch your stress level go down!

if you try some new habits, if you work your mind muscles and your organizational skills in a different way, you will find that you will create the life that you truly want, not just the one that you end up with. 5. And last, enjoy the person you are. If you don’t like yourself, find out why, and start working on becoming a person you do enjoy and that others will enjoy too. The returns will be worth it. Now you have the tools, go ahead and use them, or make your own list and tips! Whatever you do, enjoy spring and happy new beginnings!

4. Open the windows of your mind: Just like opening the windows of our home brings in fresh air, so will opening the windows of our minds! Open up to new ideas and a fresh perspective on living a happier, better, easier life. Change takes action and the first step is to change the way you think and envision life. If you open your mind to different ways of doing things,

The jeweler, with the penchant for twisting the classic. Lulwa Al-Terkait is a vibrant yet modest, talented yet humble Kuwaiti jeweler, who designs and produces her own line of rings, ear-cuffs, and headpieces with a twist on classic design, rendering them contemporary enough to be highly coveted by the fashion pack. A Mass Communication graduate who works in a nonprofit organization during the day, Lulwa successfully pursues her jewelry business in between her job and raising two children. Her story is similar to that of anyone who accidentally slips and falls into a trade that becomes their all encompassing passion. She certainly does not fall short in any area of her life, her children are her life and she has no qualms putting a halt to her job in order to see to their needs, like she did when she stopped her jewelry to have her son and raise him during the first few years of his life, and only resumed once she felt he was old enough. She started making jewelry after meeting a jeweler who visited Kuwait with a new line and couldn’t help but shower him with constructive criticism on how to improve his pieces to appeal to the discerning Kuwait woman. His finish and the types of stones would not have appealed to the “Kuwaiti woman who has exquisite taste, and expects good quality”. Hence, after heading back to Lebanon to tweak the pieces he found that they quickly sold and so asked Lulwa to collaborate with him. They built a successful working relationship that saw them through two successful lines, and after parting ways, Lulwa felt empowered and equipped enough to branch out with her own line of jewelry. Initially, her pieces were sold not in Kuwait but in the famous Sauce Boutique Dubai and Impression Boutique Bahrain before truly being recognized in Kuwait. "It’s a hobby, I didn’t study it.", said Lulwa of her credentials. Yet her pieces sold faster than she could make them. Her new workshop in Souq Al Mubarikia has now become her base from where she and her technicians work together, quite often on the floor in their sweatpants. “I don’t need a huge office or workshop, I have no problem visiting clients wherever is comfortable for them. I’m very flexible when it comes to pleasing my clients, anything they ask for can be executed,” she said.

“If you have a good, fertile environment you can achieve what you set out to do” www.citypageskuwait.com

Her love for what she does and her loyalty to her country is also evident, for she could have picked any location to open a workshop yet chose the iconic old Souq to set up her operation, and has used local technicians and sourced her material from Kuwait as much as possible. “Kuwaits resources are so very limited,” she laments. That is why I have to quite often ask people to bring back whatever material I need from abroad.” When asked what items are best sellers among her clientele she states ear cuffs and headpieces fly out of her workshop faster than she can keep up. Her “baguette” line consists of headpieces, ear cuffs and rings, and she will be starting to design brooches based on popular demand. Her new line, Summer of Love, featuring the highly coveted ear cuffs is in the works and will be ready soon. She gets her inspiration from her clients requests, and truly knows what they want, obligingly designing away and delivering to their houses if need be.

When asked what the most satisfying part of her life is she states, “It is a complete picture, just the way I imagined it to be.” Her advice to up and coming entrepreneurs is, “if you have an idea go for it, don’t make excuses for why you can’t do something. There is always room for doubt, but truth is unless you pursue something, you will never be fulfilled.” Her children have become aspiring jewelers as well, and if asked what she wants to be in the future her daughter states “Asutronaut/Jeweler.”

Supporting Mothers and Infants Everyone wants mothers and babies to have the best chance of a healthy and happy entrance into motherhood. Yet despite the endless efforts and best intentions of doctors, nurses, and mothers, many women don’t have the positive experience they were hoping for as they enter motherhood. “Something is not working,” says Founder and President of BirthKuwait, Sarah Paksima. “It appears that medical interventions during the births of previously normal and healthy pregnant moms are far too high, and breastfeeding rates are far too low. For too many of the women I work with, stories about their first experiences as a new mother are filled with feelings of loneliness and frustration.” As a result, she created, along with her co-founders Heba Al Ali and Zuzana Nadova, BirthKuwait, to help organize the efforts of what she saw as the missing component between medical institutions and mothers here in Kuwait: the community health worker. “These are healthcare professionals that help educate and support families in the community by focusing on education, diet, exercise, and lifestyle for a preventative and holistic approach to maternal and infant well-being,” says Sarah. Supporting Community Health Professionals BirthKuwait provides essential services for both community health workers and mothers. Community health workers include, for example, lactation consultants, breastfeeding counselors, childbirth educators, doulas, prenatal yoga instructors, counselors and therapists, and prenatal and infant massage therapists. Typically community health workers work outside of traditional medical institutions (hospitals) unless they are also trained as a medical professional (such as a nurse or doctor). “But the services they provide are crucial for whole health,” says Sarah. She explains how BirthKuwait helps support the efforts of these professionals in three ways: “First, we provide an opportunity for these health professionals to network together. They plan events together, refer clients to one another, and attract a larger audience by all promoting their services on the same website and social media network (www.BirthKuwait.com or @birthkuwait). Second, we provide affordable advertising and work-space for smaller community health businesses to operate, www.citypageskuwait.com

encouraging the expansion of this growing field. Finally, third, we organize regular training workshops to increase the availability of these services in Kuwait and to improve the skills of those already in the field.” So far BirthKuwait has organized Hypno-Birthing and Blooma Prenatal Yoga Teacher Training Workshops, and a DONA Doula Training Workshop (in partnership with Royale Hayatt).“In November of 2013, we will be organizing a Lamaze Childbirth Educator Teacher Training Workshop and DONA Doula Training Workshop. We want to support the growth, professionalism, and availability of community health workers in Kuwait,” she shared. Supporting Mothers and Infants “We exist to support mothers and infants. The services that we provide community health professionals make it possible for us to help mothers and infants to be healthier and happier. Many mothers want to be healthier during or after their pregnancy, but they can’t find the support or resources they need. For example, most mothers know that breastfeeding is the best thing for them and their new babies, but they can’t find anyone to encourage or support them in their efforts. Now they can. Through www.BirthKuwait.com moms can find all the support and resources they need,” explains Sarah. On the website, expectant mothers can find a calendar of events including public lectures on a variety of topics, prenatal yoga classes, childbirth preparation classes, infant massage and mommy-baby yoga classes, and post-partum support groups. They will also find contact info for doulas, peer breastfeeding counselors, lactation consultants, and nutritionists. “Moms can find everything they need to help them prepare for motherhood, and the support they need to help them succeed,” says Sarah. BirthKuwait is a non-profit organization operating as part of The Voluntary Health Association.

{Interview}

A mother’s challenge, a journey to help others What started as a trip to support her husband and look for better ways to help their daughter, transformed into a burning passion, born from her personal experience renovating it into a tangible vision to help other autistic children and families deal with the disability. Dr. Samira Al-Saad, talks about autism in Kuwait.

Please introduce yourself to our readers? I’m the founder and director of the Kuwait Center for Autism.

When and how did the idea of forming a society to help children with Autism come up? It all started when I was in Boston, accompanying my husband on a posting in Boston. We were with my daughter, Fatima, who was attending the Higashi School for autistic children. I took my time in Boston to expand my knowledge on the subject and bring this experience to Kuwait, where there wasn’t anything like that. Kuwait needed a platform through which the needs of autistic children could be addressed so they can be integrated into the mainstream community.

What was the biggest challenge you had to face while converting the building in Rawda into a school for Autistic children? The initial KD1.5 million that we have estimated was not enough for the project. We needed to raise KD2 million more. It took time to find financiers, acquiring the land, and getting things set up.

Where did you get the support from? In 1994 the Kuwait Center for Autism was set up with the help from the Kuwait Awqaf Public Foundation and the Ministry of Education and public support. www.citypageskuwait.com

How did you manage to get qualified staff to work at school? When we opened the center in 1994, I trained ten teachers that would be interacting with the first five students we had. It takes a special person with patience, stamina, understanding and a true vocation to help and cope with the work involved with these children. I was helping trainers to change their perception and understanding of children with special needs.

Can you share with us some statistics of Autistic children in Kuwait and your success? We started with five children, now we have about 100 children and 80 people in staff. We get specialists and consultants from overseas. We also have a Diagnostic Team that comes on a bi-annual basis and we’ll have Music and Art Therapists coming in as well.

What’s new on the building for Kuwait Center for Autism and who supports it? This new school has a much greater capacity and facilities in Mishref. This will be the first school for the Gulf region. It provides state of the art equipment for children, and a large swimming pool. It also has office space for research. Everything that we get from our programs and activities go to the Autism Endowment Fund (AEF). Right now, it amounts to KD2 million. The AEF is registered in the Ministry of Justice, managed by the government. It cannot be

used for anything other than autism-related programs and projects. This is to ensure that the project will go on, way into the future.

What are some of the awareness events that the center organizes? We have a yearly marathon to bring autism awareness. We also have a bimonthly magazine, “Silent Scream” which details stories about pupils, conferences, workshops, and more information on international autism organizations.

What are the objectives of Kuwait Center for Autism? We want this institution to help more children and families in understanding autism. One of the things we are working on is data gathering. We are working on deriving accurate statistics for autism (e.g., people affected, services available in each of the Gulf state, etc.) within the region.

Tell us about some of your achievements so far? The center is growing and I believe the awareness of autism is growing in Kuwait. I dream of this organization in getting support from the government and the public to empower the disabled members of the autistic community and integrate them into the fold of the society.

Tell us about the International Autism Conference to be held in 2014? This conference is held every four years. Next year the International Autism Conference will be held in Kuwait with the arrangements from the World Autism Organization Conference and hosted by the Kuwait Center for Autism. The event will be from the 11 to the 13 of November.

What is your involvement at the GCC level? The International Autism Conference will be the largest autism conference in the Arab region. We’ll have renowned professionals as key speakers. We’ll have informational sessions, workshops and exhibitions.

Your message for us at CityPages magazine? We want to make a difference in people’s lives. We want to make a difference in the way autism is perceived. We want to make a difference in the kind of knowledge we have about the syndrome, and the support services we can offer. www.citypageskuwait.com

Protecting the eye, an important factor we should not ignore. When it comes to eye protection, the majority of people will think about UV protection making sunglasses very popular. Some people think about protecting the eyes from mechanical and chemical injuries. Most eyeglass wearers consider special filters to protect their eyes from glare. This article shares some information about additional ways to protect the eyes.

accumulated over time, its long term effect to the eye has to be targeted too. This has led spectacle lens manufacturers to come up with new technologies making our vision more comfortable and protected. The Blue Control coating is designed to help target this issue. Blue control is a spectacle lens coating to efficiently neutralize a certain amount of blue light without changing our perception of light. This coating improves contrast, thus causing less eye strain. It is offered in combination with super anti-reflection coating ensuring high transmittance of light for high quality image.

These days, the modern person, including children, will be using a device with an LCD screen for a minimum of 2 hours/day. For people who are by profession involved in using PC’s, the amount of time staring at an LCD screen increases considerably. Natural light has a full spectrum of colours. One of them is blue light which is necessary for colour perception but it can add to scatter of light causing more glare. It is also blue light in the visible spectrum that causes the most deterioration in the eye, especially the retina. LCD Screens are known to emit blue light which can be harmful to the eyes. Not only that but also artificial lighting, specifically LED light emit blue light. This means, although we are indoors and away from the sun, the eye is still exposed to blue light. Prolonged blue light exposure can present symptoms such as eye strain, eye fatigue or dry eyes. It is important to reduce the emission of blue light from tablets and electronic devices thus keeping our eyes in better condition. Moreover, it also improves productivity by relieving symptoms of eye fatigue. Since Blue light damage is

Apart from neck and back pain, it is now common to hear people complaining of a so called “digital eyestrain or computer vision syndrome” caused by the use of computers, smart phones and electronic media. Your eye care provider can provide advice on what actions to take to relieve tired eyes and difficulty in focusing. Such steps, together with Blue Control coating, can lead to a relaxed and comfortable vision. Children of today spend much time with digital devices. They are more vulnerable to LCD related eye problems than past generations. They too can suffer from eye fatigue. Therefore, by the time they are 25, they will be more exposed to blue light than we are today. Good nutrition, care and choosing the right eye protection for all sorts of hazards are essential for adults and kids alike. One should also realize shielding the eyes from the cumulative effect of blue light can contribute in maintaining fatigue free eyes and a healthy retina. * Blue Control coating is not sufficient to block harmful UV light and should not be used to replace sunglasses. Always ask a professional eye care practitioner for the right device and actions to protect one’s eyes. April 2013

AUTISM – early identification can change lives Annual World Autism Awareness Day on 2nd April, and every year, is an opportunity to highlight the growing need for concern and awareness about autism, a condition which is thought to affect a staggering 1 in 110 children. Autism is treatable. Children do not "outgrow" autism, but studies show that early diagnosis and intervention lead to significantly improved outcomes. What is Autism?

• Moves constantly • May be fascinated by details of an object, such as the spinning wheels of a toy car, but doesn't understand the "big picture" of the subject • May be unusually sensitive to light, sound and touch, and yet oblivious to pain • Does not engage in imitative or make-believe play • May have odd food preferences, such as eating only a few foods, or craving items that are not food, such as chalk or dirt • May perform activities that could cause self-harm, such as head banging Young children with autism also have a hard time sharing experiences with others. When read to, for example, they're unlikely to point at pictures in the book. This earlydeveloping social skill is crucial to later language and social development.

Autism is a developmental disability that typically appears during the first three years of life and affects a person’s ability to communicate and interact with others. These problems happen when the brain develops differently and has trouble with an important job: making sense of the world. Every day, our brains interpret (understand) the things we see, smell, hear, taste, touch, and experience. But when someone's brain has trouble interpreting these things, it can make it hard to talk, listen, understand, play, and learn. Kids with autism often can't make connections that other kids make easily. For example, when people smile, you know they feel happy or friendly; when people look mad, you can tell by their face or their voice. But many kids who have autism spectrum disorders have trouble understanding what emotions look like and what another person is thinking. They might act in a way that seems unusual, and it can be hard to understand why they're doing it.

As they mature, some children with autism become more engaged with others and show fewer disturbances in behavior. Some, usually those with the least severe problems, eventually may lead normal or near-normal lives. Others, however, continue to have difficulty with language or social skills, and the teen years can bring worse behavioral problems.

A kid with an autism spectrum disorder might: • Have trouble learning the meaning of words • Do the same thing over and over, like saying the same word • Move his or her arms or body in a certain way • Have trouble adjusting to changes (like trying new foods, having a substitute teacher, or having toys moved from their usual places) Imagine trying to understand what your teacher is saying if you didn't know what her words really mean. It is even more frustrating if a kid can't come up with the right words to express his or her own thoughts, or tell a parent what he or she needs or wants. Sometimes this can make a kid very upset and frustrated. Some issues — like not wanting to try new foods or not wanting anyone to move your toys — affect lots of kids, not just those who have an autism spectrum disorder. But kids with these disorders have more trouble "growing out of it" and learning to handle stuff that's challenging and annoying.

Symptoms: Though each child with autism is likely to have a unique pattern of behavior, these are some common autism symptoms:

Social skills • Fails to respond to his or her name • Has poor eye contact • Appears not to hear you at times • Resists cuddling and holding • Appears unaware of others' feelings www.citypageskuwait.com

Most children with autism are slow to gain new knowledge or skills, and some have signs of lower than normal intelligence. Other children with autism have normal to high intelligence. These children learn quickly, yet have trouble communicating, applying what they know in everyday life and adjusting in social situations. A small number of children with autism are savants — they have exceptional skills in a specific area, such as art, math or music. • Seems to prefer playing alone — retreats into his or her own world • Doesn't ask for help or request things

Language • Doesn't speak or has delayed speech • Loses previously acquired ability to say words or sentences • Doesn't make eye contact when making requests • Speaks with an abnormal tone or rhythm — may use a singsong voice or robot-like speech • Can't start a conversation or keep one going • May repeat words or phrases verbatim, but doesn't understand how to use them • Doesn't appear to understand simple questions or directions

Behavior • Performs repetitive movements, such as rocking, spinning or hand-flapping • Develops specific routines or rituals and becomes disturbed at the slightest change

When to see a doctor Babies develop at their own pace and many don't follow exact timelines found in some parenting books. But children with autism usually show some signs of delayed development within the first year. If you suspect that your child may have autism, discuss your concerns with your doctor. The symptoms associated with autism can also be associated with other developmental disorders. The earlier that treatment begins the more effective it will be. Your doctor may recommend more developmental tests if your child: • Doesn't respond with a smile or happy expression by 6 months • Doesn't mimic sounds or facial expressions by 9 months • Doesn't babble or coo by 12 months • Doesn't gesture — such as point or wave — by 12 months • Doesn't say single words by 16 months • Doesn't say two-word phrases by 24 months • Loses previously acquired language or social skills at any age

Cosmetic Surgery Center expands to better Kuwait's image Dr. Adel Quttainah’s effort, ambition and dedication has allowed him to bring the latest technology in cosmetic surgery and expanding his clinic. He talks about how he got to where he’s at, the challenges and how his center is looking to better Kuwaiti residents in many fields. When did you establish the Cosmetic Surgery Center? I opened the clinic as only plastic surgery in 2006 and had one floor open only at that time. I expanded to three floors approximately one year after the initial opening. We now offer dermatology, hair transplant, complete laser department, as well as weight loss.

Your Cosmetic Surgery Center offers the expertise, techniques and latest technology to help your patients look and feel better. What changes have you seen in your long career, in terms of techniques, technology and trends? Was plastic surgery as popular as it was 20 years ago? Well-established techniques of plastic surgery have basically remained unchanged. www.citypageskuwait.com

However, concepts that have developed over the years include the increase in less invasive techniques, short scar techniques, the increase in using local anesthetic instead of general, as well as some use of lasers. Specific standards of plastic surgery skill and training are not changed with technology but recovery can be more rapid, less down time and patients can return to work in a short period of time with less pain. The popularity of plastic surgery has skyrocketed in the last ten years alone. It is no longer a taboo. Patients freely talk about what they have done and this is also common in the Kuwaiti society. We have had also an increase in men doing plastic surgery and younger patients.

What subtle changes make a big difference in the overall balance and attractiveness of a patient’s face?

{Interview} In some patients a simple Botox session or small amount of filler can improve their attractiveness significantly. Some small surgeries, such as upper eyelid surgery can also take years off a patients' age.

Is there an artistic element in rejuvenating or enhancing a face, how important is the surgeon’s own perception of beauty? Ultimately you want your patient to be happy. However, I like to share with the patient what normal ranges of facial features are, as some patients have a tendency to want excessive treatment. There is a cultural factor such as some women strive to have extremely large cheeks or severe nose surgery. I try to encourage patients to maintain a natural look, as trends come and go and some thing that may be considered trendy may not be something you want for the rest of your life.

Many people are choosing to have facial plastic surgery to look younger and more attractive. Is there any procedure that is more popular than the others? Facial procedures that are most common in Arabic society include rhinoplasty or nose surgery, fillers and Botox. With the aging population, facelifts are also very common.

Plastic surgery comes with two types of risk: anticipation of the patient and real medical risks. How do you minimize these risks? How do you judge patients’ anticipation? It is important that patients have realistic expectations and understand the limitations of some surgeries. As far as risks, all patients have a complete medical assessment and we do not operate if patients have significant risk. Today, many procedures can be done with less invasive techniques that also minimize risks.

Have there been instances where you have refused to perform surgery? Almost on a weekly basis I turn away patients. I have realized over the years that the first five years of training in plastic surgery you learn how to do surgery,

the rest of your career you realize who not to do surgery on. Patients that have personal problems and are looking for a solution with plastic surgery are definitely not advised to do so. It is not a solution; as well patients who feel pressure from others to do surgery should not. It is a private decision one should make for themselves. Also many patients come in that do not need surgery, they actually look fine and I discourage them if they are doing it for the wrong reasons.

What are you biggest in-demand procedures for females and males respectively? Females prefer liposuction, tummy tuck and breast implants. Males have hair transplants, nose surgery and male breast reduction surgery mostly.

What non-surgical recommendations would you make to reverse the signs of aging? There are many non-surgical procedures today. We offer many lasers for resurfacing, Botox, Fillers (liquid facelifts), peels, PRP; the list is endless.

How do you keep yourself abreast of all the new changes and developments in Cosmetic Surgery? As an active member of the Royal College of Physicians of Canada as well as the American Society of Plastic Surgeons we are required to attend many conferences and annual meetings. I make it to most of the larger meetings yearly.

Can you tell us about some of your professional achievements? I feel my greatest professional achievement has been branching out and starting the cosmetic surgery clinic. I have had significant experience with reconstructive plastic surgery and microsurgery that has also been rewarding over the years. Also, I have volunteered on missions performing plastic surgery for children in underprivileged countries.

What are some of your future plans? I am currently about to move my clinic to another location that I have been developing in Shaab. It will be the Quttainah Medical Centre. It will be the largest private plastic surgery centre in the Middle East. Inshalla, we will be there soon. I am very honored to be able to offer this service to Kuwait. Kuwaitis should be proud that their own citizens have been improving the standard of health care in Kuwait and encourage further development by their own citizens.

When you are not at work, what are some of your favorite pastimes? I enjoy sports cars and driving when I can! Also spending time with my family. www.citypageskuwait.com

What is your favorite place to travel and why? Most of my trips are usually to plastic surgery conferences, so I usually decide based on that. I try to visit Rio de Janeiro, as I have spent time there during my fellowships in plastic surgery.

What is required to become a cosmetic surgeon? What is your advice to medical students whose dream is to become a plastic surgeon? To become an actual Plastic Surgeon has taken me 5 years of medical school in Ireland, 5 years of Plastic Surgery Residency in Canada and 2 further years of cosmetic surgery fellowship before I began working. I believe to be a proper plastic surgeon there are no short cuts. I am very surprised when I hear that some doctors are practicing "plastic surgery" without any proper training. In the US, UK and Canada, only fully trained and qualified plastic surgeons can perform surgery. Here in the Middle East almost any doctor is attempting plastic surgery, which is a frightening thought. Patients need to educate themselves about who their surgeon is and what his training is. I would suggest that students who want to do plastic surgery should get the proper training as I mentioned and they must get extensive experience in microsurgery and reconstructive surgery. If they are looking for the 'glamour' of being a plastic surgeon they will be disappointed to find out there is not much free time to do glamorous things.

Your message for us at CityPages magazine? I would like to thank you for this interview and for helping to enhance the image of Kuwaitis in so many fields.

Encouraging diabetic children to exercise Run For Fun is a three-month program ran by many volunteers looking to encourage kids to exercise and give parents peace of mind during the program. Dietitian Dalal Al Nukhailan, along with others hope this program will help children and families deal better with Type 1 Diabetes.

WHEN A TEAM COMBINES ITS SKILLS, SUCCESS COMES FLASHING BACK

For the past four years, Clinical Dietitian Dalal Al Nukhailan has been working with diabetic children in Kuwait. Although there is unpublished data yet on how many children have diabetes, Dr Mona Al Khawari, head of department in the Amiri Hospital, said they can estimate around 2,400 children are Type 1 Diabetic in Kuwait. “In diabetes, glycemic control is optimal when Medication, Nutritional Balance, and Physical activity is taken into consideration. When those three basic sectors are met, we can insure a diabetic friendly lifestyle,” she said. “I realized that there is a missing part that is not very well taken care of in Kuwait which is the Physical Activity Role in a diabetic patient.” She then decided it was time to do something about it. Dalal said this was the first “Voluntary Group Workout for Kids with Diabetes, although I've worked on establishing other groups workouts/exercise with other category of individuals who aim to lose weight or increase fitness level and health.” Being that parents worry about hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) on their children it was important for her to provide an exercise place “under a friendly, motivational club, which offers the children an atmosphere filled with joy and sensation of fun where parents can relax and not worry because their children are under the supervision of experts and a medical team of doctors, nurses, dietitians, and any other medial volunteers that would like to help in this program,” she said. Adding her moto is: “When a team combines its skills, success comes flashing back.” Run For Fun is a group work exercise for children with diabetes, it will help encourage the children to exercise regularly in a fun way, to help maintain their health and enhance their blood sugar readings and avoid weight gain. Exercise and workouts started on March 7, but are still taking place at the Dasman Diabetes Institute in the Fitness & Rehabilitation Center, on the 4th floor, every Thursday from 4-6p.m. Dalal said kids are welcomed to join them again when this batch ends, which is after June. “We take children every 3 months, she said. “With respect to the fact that we need an HBA1C Blood Test before they join the program, and another test after three months, to evaluate the difference and be capable of measuring an endurance. Note the HBA1C Blood test gives a percentage of blood glucose (sugar) level of an individual for the last three months.” The only requirements for kids to join the program is to be between the ages of 6-12, have type 1 diabetes and have a recommendation from their doctor. Dalal said although it is too early to state the impact and success of the program since its only been going on for a month, but The Ostrich OSTY, designed by graphic designer Faisal Al Fandi started as a simple sketch and quickly became the role model for kids with diabetes. “She is a fast runner, with a healthy diet, and is managing her diabetes health through diet, exercise and insulin therapy,” Dalal said. “This is an attractive way to get children attached to character in fantasy way rather than a life rigid example.”

“so far, I can see kids are finding it very enthusiastic and motivational,” she said. “They are learning more about the daily dilemma of Hyperglycemia (high blood glucose) and hypoglycemia (low blood glucose) and how to manage these cases either with nutrition or with insulin.” She said they see the joy and happiness in the eyes of the kids that are attending, “and parents are finding this activity very beneficial since their fear of what to do before, during and after exercise with a type 1 diabetic child is all cleared out.” The program could not be possible without the support by the Al Amiri Hospital - Pediatric Department, Diabetes Unit, Dr Mona Al Khawari, head of department in the Amiri Hospital, and Dr Fahad Al-Ghimlas, Director and Consultant Respirologist Fitness and Rehabilitation Center At Dasman Diabetes Institute, who’s in charge of the doctors in the Run For Fun Club. Dr. Saud Al-Anezi is a Specialist Orthodontist working for the Ministry of Health in Kuwait. Dr. Saud gets an indescribable joy giving a beautiful smile to his patients after removing their braces. His favorite quote is "Do what you love and love what you do" Twitter/Instagram: @q8braces

What do I need to know about my wisdom tooth? Wisdom teeth ( third molars) are defined as the third of the molar teeth and it is the last tooth that erupts in the human mouth. There are four wisdom teeth in a human's mouth, two in the top jaw and two in the bottom jaw. In normal circumstances, they start to appear in the mouth around the age of 16-18 years of age, however, they do erupt sometimes at a younger age and in some people they appear in the mouth at a later stage. In addition, wisdom teeth are the most commonly " congenitally" missing teeth i.e. in many people they don't develop at all. In the past, the normal practice was to remove wisdom teeth in individuals whether they cause problems or not. However, since 1990s, more scientific research and studies showed that if the wisdom teeth are erupting normally and no problems are associated with them, then they can be left alone. In these scientific studies, it was also mentioned when they are required to be removed. For instance, if they repeatedly affected by "pericoronitis" i.e. infection of the piece of gum around the wisdom tooth. Other situations where the wisdom tooth needs to be removed are: the tooth is severely damaged by tooth decay or gum problems, when it is causing food impaction resulting in decay to the tooth next to it. If after a thorough examination , the decision was made to remove them, then the options are to remove them under local anesthetic or general an anesthetic (you go to sleep before the operation). Frequently, if it is only one or two wisdom teeth are to be removed and their positions in the mouth is good, then we do

remove them under local anesthetic. On the other hand, if more teeth are necessary to be removed, and they are positioned deep in the jaw, then the general anesthetic approach is recommended. It must be highlighted that although the risks of removing the wisdom teeth are minimal, individuals who are having their wisdom teeth removed, be aware of them. Firstly, after removing the wisdom tooth especially the bottom one (positioned in the bottom jaw), you may experience some degree of pain, swelling, bleeding but those signs subside over 2-3 days. Moreover, your doctor may prescribe painkillers with or without antibiotics to help you come through these initial days. More serious risks, include damage to the nerve the

supplies the teeth and it runs right under the wisdom tooth. The good news are that in most people there is a gap between this nerve and the wisdom tooth and even if the nerve gets damaged during the wisdom tooth removal procedure, in most cases the damage is temporary and the nerve recovers. Finally, as an orthodontist ( dental braces doctor), I get lots of questions from my patients when I finish their treatment and remove their braces about wisdom teeth. The general perception is that wisdom teeth when they erupt, they move the teeth after braces treatment and the teeth become crooked again. There is no scientific evidence to support this theory and providing that the patient wear his/her retainer, the teeth should stay firm and don't move. April 2013

Newest PUMA shoe, the Mobium Elite worth trying Featuring patent-pending technology the Mobium Elite is unlike any shoe. Their adaptive footwear technology is something runners can greatly benefit from. By Claudia Lozano Most runners myself included, feel better when a running shoe is half a size bigger, but with PUMA’s Mobium Elite, that’s no longer necessary. This shoe is different in three key ways. First, the “Windlass Chassis.” The shoe was designed on the premise that with each step the shoe, just like your foot, expands six percent in all directions — height, length and proportion along your foot. This allows the shoe to mold to your feet with every step. Second and thirdly the “Mobium Band” and “Expansion Pods” based on big felines. PUMA looked at why pumas, cheetahs, and other big cats are such effective runners. They saw a cat’s paw is constantly expanding and contracting. That’s why they strategically placed the Mobium Band on an 8 shape wrapped throughout the shoe. This allows the shoe to expand and contract back to its original shape with every stride. The more force applied to the shoe, the more spring return it has, allowing runners a faster run and a longer stride. The “Expansion Pods” are dynamic cushions to support all key parts of the foot that come in contact with the floor on every stride. All of these put together engage your feet’s arch and strengthen your feet as you run. The shoe has an upper thin tongue, which has a plastic/silicone feel to it. Although its funny to the touch it’s somehow makes the shoe feel lighter and it doesn’t move as you run, so it makes it more comfortable. The shoe, like other running shoes, also has the breathable upper mesh to allow your feet to stay dry. As I tried on the shoe, it was evident this shoe was different. It is a little harder to put on that other shoes, because the shape of the shoe was built to be in the same shape as your foot. They are snug and form fitting around all sides and the bottom is also shaped like an arched foot, not flat like a regular sneaker would be. In the beginning, the shoe will feel different and snug, but as you run you’ll feel all the new enhancements to this new shoe are worth it. The Expansion Pods are great in better absorbing the power shock. The Mobium Band helps to enhance energy return and somehow pushes you to run faster with longer strides, and the Windlass Chassis makes you feel one with the shoe. The shoe is now available at many stores, and it comes in three different colors for women — silver aurora white, red and white, and black and red. Men can find their pair in four different colors — black and white, blue-black white, black and red, and the classic featured lime green with a hint of black and white. If you like running and if you’re up to the challenge to try these new shoes with the latest technology “rooted in anatomy and inspired by nature,” the Mobium Elite shoes are for you, your feet will appreciate it. www.citypageskuwait.com

Is your cheat meal, a “defeat” meal? I think I’ve had more fantasies about food than with the latest celebrity-crush that usually besieges every woman (though let’s be honest, no one can hold a candle or cupcake to Ryan Gosling). I usually have thought of such lovely food items when it comes to my weekly cheat meal. If you’re not in the know, a cheat meal refers to a meal of some sort which is out of the healthy bounds of what one usually eats. For example; if you’re used to eating 5-6 small healthy meals a day, a cheat meal can be likened to a rewarding meal once a week whereby you don’t have to stick to your healthy guns and count all your protein, carbs and fat macronutrients and let loose. Over the years I’ve gone through interesting phases to appease my overactive foodie-imagination and satisfy my cravings that have been plaguing me for the week. In New Zealand, I had a nefarious affair and tasty fascination with deep fried Mars chocolate bars (hey don’t knock it until you try it!). In London, my cheat meal of choice used to either be pizza ladened with oodles of mozzarella shavings or Caribbean goat curry with rice and peas. In Kuwait however, my latest raison d'être happens to be the salted caramel cupcakes from Sprinkles Cupcakes located at Phase 3 of the Avenues. Why, just imagining its rich caramel frosting topped with a sprinkle of coarse sea salt right now feels like I’m treading on dangerous ground as it’s not the weekend yet and I’ve still 34 clean meals to consume before I can “reward” myself with such a delicacy. Too often in Kuwait, the connotation of a “cheat meal” is used as an excuse to basically binge-eat. Don’t believe me? Log on to a friend’s Instagram account and see for yourself. Or take a look at yours and you’ll know what I mean. The meals are massive and are either dairy, sugar or transfat overkill. Why some individuals don’t even bother with having A meal but a cheat DAY. It is here that one has to ponder: Is your cheat meal, a defeat meal? Are you rewarding yourself and going guns blazing with that one dish so much so that it ruins all your hard nutrition and fitness work you’ve put in over the past week?

Don’t get me wrong. I do advocate having a weekly cheat meal simply because it benefits you physically, psychologically and socially. Physically: If you’re cutting calories and are dietingdown, your body is smart enough to know this and will slow down your metabolism. In training, you won’t lift as heavy as you normally would due to your depleted glycogen stores in your muscles and will feel fatigued. A cheat meal is great because it keeps your body guessing, gives you a stronger workout and spikes your metabolism due to the excess carbohydrates in that one meal. Psychologically: Unless you have the discipline of Buddha, eating clean can sometimes be mentally draining. Clients whom I’m helping wean off processed foods and sugars often tell me that it feels like they’re on a rollercoaster ride of multitude emotions. It’s no lie. If you’re dieting down, it can be depressing. Having that one cheat meal, gives you that little window of happiness and keeps you on the sane path of eating clean and reaching your fitness goal

whatever it may be. Socially: My friends are well aware of my pedantic behavior when it comes to food. Hence it can be problematic or challenging (whichever way you see fit) when it comes to catching up with them over a meal. If we decide on a certain restaurant that isn’t too health-conscious, I usually would bring my own container of food. Or my own measuring spoons to portion control my meals. Yes being healthy can be an isolating experience. If you practice having a weekly cheat-meal, with a bit of food and time management, you can bypass the hassle and use your cheat meal as a hall-pass when dining out with friends. So are there any pointers when it comes to devising one’s cheat meal? Yes! Ensure your cheat meal has a protein component in it to keep you full.

l

l Portion control your cheat meals. If you crave burgers for example, have them in moderation. Most burgers from fast-food chains start at the 350kcal mark. Imagine if you had 3 of them. That’s over 1000 calories in one sitting. I’m pretty sure you wouldn’t skip the French fries and soda pop at this point.

Organization is key. If you know you’re going to catch up with friends sometime in the week, have your cheat meal then with them. If you have nada on your social-agenda, have it post-workout after an intense workout session. Your body will use the calories consumed and hopefully not store it.

l

l If sugars, trans fats and dairy make you ill, why have that as your cheat meal then? It will make you bloated and lethargic.

Be discipline and have your cheat meal once a week as motivation. If you “reward” yourself one too many times a week, you could be undoing all that blood, sweat and tears at the gym and negate from reaching your fitness goal.

Philips Fidelio HTL9100 The HTL9100 is the first sound bar that can transform into a surround-sound system. A user detaches the bar’s wireless 12-watt speakers—which last 10 hours—and places them anywhere in the room. Sensors automatically detect their state and adjust the audio balance.

Quirky Pluck The EnChroma Cx.UV450

ChargeCard

The EnChroma Cx.UV450 are the first sunglasses that don’t block color. The lenses have a filter that lets in a range of light wavelengths typically muted by UV shades, so wearers see enhanced blues and greens.

At one tenth of an inch thick and the size of a credit card, the ChargeCard is the slimmest USB charger available. Engineers rearranged the circuitry to lie flat. A rubber port folds out and plugs into any USB device, and a micro-USB or iPhone port connects to a phone.

Epsilon Labs Silence

Ryobi 2 Cycle Backpack Blower

The Silence Android app keeps phones quiet during meetings. A user outlines his schedule—or imports it from another calendar—and indicates whether the phone should be in ring, vibrate, or silent mode. The app changes the settings accordingly.

Clearing the yard is faster with the Ryobi Backpack Blower. Unlike other blowers, which have air tubes that run up the back and over the engine, this one has tubes that stay below the engine, and go around the waist. Because it doesn’t have to push air upward, the 42cc motor maintains a higher force.

Separating eggs is easier with the Pluck. A cook squeezes the silicone bulb to create a vacuum; upon release, it sucks up a yolk. Unlike a gravity strainer, the Pluck can hold several yolks at once. It breaks them less often, too.

GE High Efficiency Topload Washer The HE Topload Washer prevents users from adding too much detergent. During a quick first spin, sensors detect the size and absorption of any load up to 22 pounds. After internal calculations, the washer automatically dispenses the perfect amount of soap.

Creating mood with color Color has, a profound effect on our mood. In clothing, interiors, landscape and even natural light, a color can change mood from sad to happy, from confusion to intelligence, from fear to confidence. Particular colors have different effects on each individual. Response to a color may be influenced by a number of a factors such as the body's need for a specific color, a sad or happy memory associated with a color. In previous decades, certain colors or group of colors dominated every palette. Now in millennium, the stopper is out and uniqueness and personal preferences are really in. There are no absolutes in the world of color. Some colors make you want to get out of your chair, others make you want to nestle down and read. Some colors are articulate and must be listened to. Others are very quiet. Some colors indicate that you have travelled or are well read. Yet others create a desire for closeness, intimacy and love. Following are some of the most typical responses to various color groups .

Nurturing Neutrals

Intellectual colours

These colors create a sense of peace and well being. They foster quiet conversation with family and friends and can dispel loneliness.

These are the sharp, witty and unique colors which convey a message that the owner has travelled, is well read and has something to say.

• Throughout time, mankind has found a sense of peace are tranquility when in touch with "mother earth."

• These colors will command respect without being overbearing.

• It follows that colors which impart a sense of warmth and serenity come directly from the earth.

• Grey is a color which promotes creativity and will often be found in foundation of an intellectual palette. These greys will be warm and gentle.

• In addition to the earth colors in the natural group are colors associated with sea such as sand, shell, coral, pearl, stone, seaweed.

• Some tones of blue suggest communication and trust, so it will naturally be found in the intellectual palette.

• And situations. It will always be found among the 'nuturing neutrals'. • The blues represented here will range from winter sky to stream to midnight.

• Navy blues will often find their way in this palette, but its effect is warm and never cold and fragile.

• The neutrals are somewhat like the furniture while other palettes are more like accents or accessories.

• Red also appears in this intellectual palette, but the shades will be earthy and complicated burgundy, cranberry.

• This palette also starts with a earthy, warm base.

is no accident that red is the chosen symbolic color for Valentine's day. • In interior design, however, a less intense, softer tone of red is far more conductive to romance than the pure hue. Often referred as pinks, these colors vary from cool to warm and from light to dark. • Pinks have an interesting quality that seems to halt the body's ability to stay angry. • Purple is another color which is definitively romantic because of its passionate, unpredictable and quixotic characteristics. • Paler, less intense tones of orange such as apricot and peach are often included in the romantic palette, suggesting purity and innocence. • Blues in the romantic palette will be cool and inspired by water.

Personal style

Romantic colours

There are no trends in color as important as personal style. • Today, most designers draw from many historical periods as well as contemporary influences and mix them together to create unique personal spaces. • The most effective color palettes reflect and enhance the interests, collections and activities of the people who live there as well as architectural features.

Many species including the human beings attempt to attract the opposite sex with colors. • Red is the color of sex and lust and is often called the most romantic of colors. It

The effects of color on mood will vary from individual to individual. Color schemes have emotional messages too. An awareness of the emotions generated by different colors is helpful in planning personal palettes that will be pleasant to live with, but it must be understood that this information is not absolute. Subtle changes in tone can increase or decrease the emotions evoked by particular color, allowing it to be included in many diverse palettes. April 2013

Fame in the Adriatic Chapter Two

“My lady of Forli.” I I almost swallow my tongue from fear when I turn around. It would have been such a waste if I did because it is Caterina, not my mother, who marches up to me like a soldier of the republic, doing a great disservice to her impeccable beauty by being so furious. The fabric of her black dress flaps with her rapid movement, making the pink lace seem as though it were a jagged brush stroke on a dark canvas. “Have you lost your mind?” Her honey-colored eyes gleam with repugnance. The fifteen-year-old calls Giuseppe the basest of names and chastises me, as if she were older or taller than either of us. What I wouldn’t give to have this much confidence! Caterina was always so beautiful that by the time she was three years old, the villagers started naming their daughters Caterina in reference to her. It should have been my little friend who trained as a professional courtesan, not the dog, Vittoria Rosso. My little friend is now saying, “And with an actor? Who’s a pagan? Have you no shame?” This is after she castigated me for my clothes and before lambasting my public indecency. Someone needed to get her priorities straight. No wonder I mistook her for my mother. They grow more alike each day, and it is unnerving to see this amalgamation, for Caterina is my neighbor and best friend, and friends are meant to be your ticket out of your parents’ supervision. “When you are done slighting me, my lady of Forli, may I have a word with your friend?” Giuseppe is all honey, no sting. I smile. The actor is alive in the boy, always making a dramatic appearance, and because I am so happy with my belated gift, I cannot help but partake in the play. “Oh, Giuseppe, you know very well that Caterina Mocenigo is not a lady.” “She spoke so well of decency you’d think she tended the fire at Vesta. For shame! For shame!” He presses the back of his hand on his forehead, feigning disgrace. “That’s not what I meant.” I muffle my giggles. “Oh?” “No. Only that she isn’t a lady.” www.citypageskuwait.com

“Oh no!” he cries, more as an aside than as a real reaction. He then rubs his chin and takes slow steps as if deep in thought. Now I am laughing. I know what’s coming next, but I still can’t wait to hear him say it: “Is she perhaps a … castrato?” “No, she’s not a man.” It is my turn to look at her and deliver my line. “She’s just a little girl from Benitses who likes to assume the guise of nobles. She’ll grow out of it once she learns that money and prestige are fleeting. Only truth is absolute.” “Bravo! Bravo!” cries the thespian, kneeling on one knee and clapping in my direction. “Flowers and accolades for the educator’s daughter, the one, the only, Maria Botticelli! Applaud, ye men, to show your love!” When random men and women on the street actually stop to applaud, tears seep out of my eyes, and my laughter echoes inside the belly of the well. Caterina, of course, is livid. She doesn’t understand Giuseppe like I do. She only sees the bad, never the good. Well, it is her loss. I clutch my coveted book. It is only Giuseppe in the whole wide world who knows the real me.

II Even my dad falls short in this area. He knew I liked science so he bought me Galen’s books. But I hate Galen himself for he thinks that women are men turned inside out, and as such, it makes us lesser creatures, more deformed than excessive. Even though my father followed the teachings of Leon Battista Alberti, who encourages men to treat their women with kindness, and even though he taught me to read and write and introduced me to male knowledge, and even though he was a kind and generous father, and even though he himself encouraged me to pursue my dream, he still never really fathomed the depth of my personality. Giuseppe, on the other hand, pays his brother to go to Venice to buy me one of my favorite books from the most prestigious printing presses in the world. He doesn’t just know me; he allows me to be me. As Ludovico Foscarini was to Isotta, Giuseppe is to me. So every once in a while I allow him the attention he desires as he plays out his scenes. Caterina is now attempting to drag me. To tease her, Giuseppe grabs my other arm and pulls me in the opposite direction, ludicrously suggesting they tear me in the middle and divide me between them. “Come on, Giuseppe, you’ve had your fun, now unhand me. Caterina is a gift from God, in fact, for I need to be out of this dress before Mother wakes up.” “But that’s what I’ve been trying to say!” Caterina yells. “Your mother is up, and

{Literature/Short Stories} she’s seething!” “What? Why?” Even Giuseppe has stopped fooling about. His back is straight, his face is serious, and he awaits Caterina’s response with anticipation. Caterina breathes through her nostrils. “I’ll tell you when we change your clothes. Come on, we don’t have much time to waste.” “It is a suitor?” Giuseppe’s suggestion takes me by surprise. “No, of course not.” I look to Caterina for confirmation, but she doesn’t affirm my dismissal, so my heart begins to race up my torso in search of my throat. “It is not! Caterina, tell Giuseppe it is not so.” She doesn’t. “That is a cruel lie that he doesn’t deserve to hear.”

best birthday gift of the century, and I do, I have to go, so I make a mental note of heading to port before first light and to Hades with the scheming Greek. I don’t look back. I run up the path into our village. Now he is yelling in the distance, saying such nonsense as how he will never forget this “slight,” and how I shall be severely punished once I become Mrs. Nini, the blessed wife of the actor prince, the most beloved by everything. God, I hate that man. “Is it true?” I ask my friend. “Like really true? There is a suitor?” “You think I was performing in one of your sordid plays? Yes. It’s true. And you honestly need to grow up and realize that you are sixteen now, a woman in a society with its own rules and moral decorum.”

“Maria, he needs to hear this, and maybe hearing it yourself will be good for you. Yes, your mother found you a suitor. He will be at Church this morning. This is why you cannot go there looking like this, and it is why you shouldn’t be wasting time on an impossible union. Come. Let’s not tarry further. And you,” she points at Giuseppe, “will say your farewell and address her with respect when next you lay your eyes upon her. If you truly love her, you’ll want her to have what’s best.”

“For Christ’s sake, Caterina, you make it sound like we are living in the past. This is the modern age now. The age of innovation! The age of groundbreaking discoveries! Did you know that Columbus discovered a New World? That the universe has no center? And when Gutenberg invented the printing press, he spread knowledge like The Black Death spreads grief, and yet, all I ever hear in Benitses is how a lady should behave, whom to marry, and when to deliver! Life can never be the same again after all these inventions. It can only move forward now. It can only be different, modern. And do you know what modern women are doing while men are trying to reach the stars? They dream of owning a villa in the Città di Corfù! I hate the city. I hate the nobility. I hate conventions and rules and decorum. And most of all, I hate marriage.”

I am petrified. Giuseppe leaving me, forever? Why? For a man I never met? All because I turned sixteen last night. So much for my dandelion. So much for my freedom. These people will force a man upon me like I am naked without, like they have nothing else to do, and all because I lost my father, the only patriarch whose words would sway them.

“You spend ten minutes with that fiend and you start to sound like him, Maria. Giuseppe is bad for you. He tells you he hates all these things because he is hated by them first. He will never, not in a thousand years, buy a house in the City of Corfu and rub shoulders with the Corfiote upper classes who own houses on different islands and eat meat and fowl, instead of stinking fish.”

I hate my mother. I hate how weak and suckered by society she is. And Caterina? God, I hate Caterina for doing this to Giuseppe. His crestfallen features look so alien, so unlike him. I tug on his open shirt. He grabs my elbow and pulls me to the side, telling Caterina to stop where she stands to allow us some privacy. He is all serious now. None of his playfulness remains.

“Well, and so what?”

“It is not a lie, Maria. Look, I’m sorry, Giuseppe, but you always knew you were never meant for her.” “Caterina!” I can’t believe what she is saying. The words are so horrible to touch and even worse to restrain.

III “Forget about them, Maria. Come with me.” “What are you talking about?” “Remember how I told you just now that this is the last you’ll see of me?” I think back, and at first it doesn’t register. “Just moments ago when I gave you the book.” Yes, now I remember. “I meant it, I wasn’t being dramatic. I’m going to work with Arturo on the ship. We leave tomorrow, at first light. I’ll be gone for a while, so how about you come with me? Let’s live out our own Odyssey together.” Wait. Come again? He was planning to leave me? Tomorrow? And here I was thinking how poor and deflated my little thespian prince had seemed? Um. OK. I throw the book in his face and sprint on home with Caterina. The Grecian ghoul yells behind me that he will wait for me at port’til first light with my birthday gift so I should come whether I want to run away or not. If I want the

“So think. You are sixteen! Life doesn’t go backwards, only forwards, and it is time for you to really think about where the next part of your life is heading.” We pass by buildings until we reach ours. Between my house and Caterina’s is a vacant home whose owners were suspected of the pox three years ago. They were all dragged in a carriage and dropped in a shabby hospital at the edge of our village a little distance from the well that swallowed my Galen, which I have christened: “The Well of Knowledge.” Uncle Dominick and his family are sequestered in a wing marked “Do Not Enter.” In other parts of the republic, a secluded hospital will not be built so close to human life and will certainly not use sections to operate on the uninfected, but the underprivileged abide by a different set of universal laws. I stood agape as Uncle Dominick, his wife, and seven children were handcuffed and driven away, just because Uncle Dominick bragged about visiting The New World and then came down with a cold, leading the authorities to believe that he was bitten by a Winchester goose, which isn’t at all a goose, by the way. It’s the adults’ pet name for syphilis. “Better cruelty than contagion,” my father had said, even though he knew it wasn’t the pox. I was thirteen years old at the time, and it frightened me whenever I passed by the empty place whose wooden rooftop tilted, taunting our trust, making us think: Oh, now it will crumble, and whoever’s inside will be squashed to smithereens. But when I stop at Caterina’s to reflect upon our neighbor’s supposedly empty house, I get gooseflesh. “Caterina…there’s someone in there.”

BOOK CLUB Breaking Dawn

As we started 2013 with a great love story that warmed all our hearts, we begin the month of April with the grand finale of the most intense book of the Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn. This book was turned into two separate movies on the big screen because of how much details and the complexity of the story’s ever changing events. What was so interesting about this book was that it was more detailed than any of the other three books. Breaking Dawn is about 800 pages long, divided into three books, the first one and the last one both written with Bella’s thoughts as well as the rest of the previous books, however book two in this particular part is written with Jacob’s thoughts, which gives the reader a bit of an insight into how this werewolf-man thinks and feels about everything that is happening around him so soon and that is one of the many reasons they had to turn the book into a two part motion picture. Another interesting aspect about this book is that between all the Twilight books, this one had the highest number of vampires; with a total of 10 clans from all over the world including the Cullens. And the story ends like this: After finally sorting out the love triangle then Edward and Jacob putting all the fights and misunderstanding behind them, Edward and Bella as well as their families and friends celebrated their love by having a traditional wedding for a very extraordinary couple. Edward’s condition for turning Bella into a vampire was marrying him and so she did, because she wanted to be forever with him so in her mind there was no point in waiting. Also, she couldn’t wait to stop aging and being the same temperature as Edward. Edward then takes Bella on the most romantic honeymoon any newlyweds have ever see, on a private island in the Caribbean until an unexpected pregnancy two weeks into their honeymoon threatens to suck the life out of Bella. She fights to keep the baby inside of her and so ignoring all the pleadings from the Cullens. Then the Cullens and Jacob are faced by the horrifying tragedy of her death, which then turns into a rescue procedure to turn her into a vampire. Her www.citypageskuwait.com

extraordinary baby Renesme is born after that, with very special gift similar to her father’s, however in a much more fascinating manner. Jacob was prepared to murder the baby that killed the love of his life or so he thought, only to discover that he imprinted (an involuntary response in which a shape-shifter finds his soul mate) on the baby and is bond by that forever to protect her and so his wolf pack has to stand down and not hurt her or the Cullens. As the baby is fast growing, one of the sisters from the Denali clan sees the baby, and assumes it’s an immortal child then outs them to the Voltury, which prepares for war to take the whole family down and in return, take Alice and Edward because of their special powers; the power of seeing the future and the power of hearing thoughts. As a defensemechanism and not purposelyintended, Carliele prepared for war and gathered his friends from all over the world to witness that Renesme is not an immortal child (baby vampires who has no control over their thirst), but she is a half human, half vampire child, that grows every day. She wins them over one by one with her extraordinary gifts. Renesme is not the only one discovering her new gifts; Bella discovered that she has the shield talent that helps her shield anybody that she wants, from her thoughts or from physically hurting her. We witness once again, how vampires and werewolves unite to help defend the innocent child and themselves. After all the stressful emotions, Edward and Bella finally have their happily ever after. And finally, after discovering her talent, Bella could show Edward how much she loved him from the beginning and he could feel and see everything she was thinking during those early beginning of their relationship. “Now you know,” I said lightly, and shrugged. “No one has ever loved anyone as much as I love you.” “You are almost right.” He said, his eyes still a little wider than usual. “I know of just one exception.” Bella & Edward He was her forever and she was his 

Next month I will be reviewing of my favorite books by one of my favorite author, Paulo Coelho, his book Inspirations. Can you imagine, combining parts of all of your favorites books in one average sized book and sharing it with your friends? Well, Paulo has done that, only what was very special is the way he organized those selections of Classical Literature. Stay Tuned.

April Book Releases Here is a look at some of the books that publishers are pushing for April 2013.

All That Is

Life After Life

When James Salter publishes a book, avid readers notice. This is his first in seven years, since Last Night, a collection of short stories. He has not published a novel in many more years. This novel is just 304 pages, but it spans a lifetime. It tells the story of a World War II veteran who becomes a book editor after the war. It is an inside glimpse in an intimate and very different publishing industry, but it is also a story about the ins and outs of love. In this case, about a character who cannot hold onto it. This is a title literary critics were talking about 6 months before publishing.

The books in Kate Atkinson's Jackson Brodie series, such as One Good Turn and When Will There Be Good News, are favorites here. Here newest novel is a departure from the series. Life After Life tells the story of Ursula Todd, who dies and is reborn again and again from 1910 until World War II. I honestly cannot imagine how this plot will work (how does a newborn even know it has died and been reborn?), but Atkinson is a brilliant writer, so I am intrigued to see what she does with this premise.

The Interestings

Equilateral

The Interestings by Meg Wolitzer looks at six friends who became very close at a camp for artistically talented kids when they were 15. While some were very successful with their talent, others were not. They are 30 now, and the novel takes a look at what has changed and what hasn't, and the ways art, power, envy and money can affect friendships.

Equilateral by Ken Kalfus is set in Egypt at the turn of the twentieth century. A British scientist has evidence that more highly evolved creatures live on Mars and gets funding to build a giant triangular structure in the Egyptian desert to communicate with them. Sound science fiction? It actually is not so much about the alien premise as about relationships between people -- difficulty between the scientist and Egyptian workers, a love triangle, and other complications.

Maya's Notebook

Montaro Caine

Chilean author Isabel Allende is known for her historical fiction that takes place in Latin America. Maya's Notebook, however, takes place in the present day. The story involves drugs and assassins.

Sidney Poitier is best known as an actor and director, but he has also published two autobiographies. His second, The Measure of a Man, was chosen for Oprah's Book Club in 2007. Now, at the age of 80, Poitier is publishing his first novel, Montaro Caine.

Nadia AlHassan

67

Nadia Al-hassan is a student in Ireland, studying Journalism. She is passionate about writing stories and poetry. Nadia loves helping people with her stories. She believes that words are so beautiful and powerful.

“Have you made your mind up yet?” they asked me. But the problem was, I hadn’t made up my mind yet. My mind was full of thoughts flying around, my heart was aching and I was afraid. I looked up and gazed at the stars, the world was an exciting place to live in and as beautiful as this life may be, it is also cruel and dark. Emotions can jump and your feelings can change, you are happy and then all of a sudden you can taste your salty tears and the stinging pain won’t go away. I knew what it felt like to have everything taken away from you and by now, I knew what depression really meant.

They teach you to never give up in life, they tell you keep fighting. But what they don’t teach you is that there is only so much you can take because when you have fought hard and held on for so long, you lose who you used to be and you start to forget all the beauty in this world. But, I was strong. I had so much to look forward to, I yearned for love and for happiness, and I craved comfort and health. I closed my eyes and pictured the future that I so desperately wanted. No, I wasn’t going to give up just yet.

Sometimes, I would dream of places and new faces. I dreamt of a world where fear didn’t exist and every single day was filled with laughter. Was there any escape? I had a decision to make and I knew it would change my whole life, for good or for worse. But I was tired, my mind was sick of having to go through this emotional pain. My body was exhausted and the physical pain was too much to bear. My heart had enough, it was crying out for help. I was young, I had my whole life ahead of me. I had plans, adventures to go on and memories to make. I didn’t want to leave this world but as I looked up, I lost myself for a while, I found comfort whenever I saw the dark sky and the bright stars.

“I love you, mom,” I whispered as I looked down at my hand as it started to itch from the injections. I hated the smell of the hospital and doctors made me nervous, I never felt safe there. But, I was ready.

As I looked behind me, they all watched me with sad eyes, waiting for my answer. My brother buried his face into his hands and wept. I didn’t dare look at my mother because I wasn’t ready to see the pain on her face. Everyone was scared, so was I.

“Yes, I have made my mind up. I want to go through with the surgery again,” I said. I had hope and I was positive that this time, I’d get better. April 2013

Ayeshah Al-Humaidhi

Shares a kinship with animals of all sizes and species. Life mission is to care for Kuwait’s forgotten animals, spread awareness and empathy. Views herself as a risk taker with a coffee addiction.

Education is the Key We often get asked why we don’t expand the K’S PATH Animal Shelter to accommodate more animals. The simple answer is because it will have no impact on the greater problem of pet overpopulation. Although the shelter is a very important part of K’S PATH and the service we provide of shelter and care to animals in need is essential to the community, it does not actually provide a solution to homeless animals. The reality is that if all K’S PATH did was operate an animal shelter, it would be having very little impact on the animal welfare issue in Kuwait. For this reason, K’S PATH focuses on the two main areas that have the largest impact on animal welfare and that is humane and effective animal control and Education. Education is the key activity that will have the largest and lasting impact on animals in Kuwait. In its effort to promote humane education, K’S PATH hired a Director of Programs in 2011 that has worked tirelessly to develop a Kindergarten through Twelfth grade curriculum that teaches Compassion and Kindness and Environmental Awareness. Replete with lesson plans, activity recommendations and special AV teaching aids, our syllabus blends classroom learning and presentations with group and community projects for experiential learning. As part of our ongoing Environment and Humane Animal Education Program, the syllabus aims to generate awareness about the ethical and humane treatment of animals, their natural habitat and the importance of environmentally friendly practices in the best interest of animal and bird species. Our approach combines global experience in animal welfare with the need to protect local species and Kuwait’s unique marine and desert biome. We cover a wide range of topics such as the five freedoms of animals, responsible pet ownership, habitat protection, migratory bird protection, marine conservation, the impact of waste on wildlife, responsible waste management including recycling, and farm animals and food sources. Each module familiarizes children with Kuwait’s bio-diversity – indigenous species, extinct and endangered species, and the threat to species illegally traded in Kuwait. We also organize educational field trips for schools and youth groups to the shelter to acquaint them with animal welfare, basic animal care and community work through our volunteer program. We are happy to report that K’S PATH has been very active on the education front. Since academic year 2011-2012 to date, K’S PATH has visited over 20 private and public schools and universities and conducted over 30 educational sessions reaching over 6000 students. The sessions acquainted students with Kuwait’s rich marine ecosystem, the impact of

waste on marine life and migratory birds, basic animal care, and the importance of waste management and recycling. One of our most recent and most successful events was Animal Awareness Week held at the American Creativity Academy for girls in March. Following a fun-filled week of classroom learning, craft projects and fundraising activities, the school successfully raised over 500KD for K’S PATH. Guided by faculty member Ms Cathy Al Qattan , each of the 25 classes ‘adopted’ an animal rescued or living at the K’S PATH Shelter to learn about. We provided the classes with photographs, background information, habitat and basic care of their ‘adopted’ animals. The students learnt about the challenges faced by Kuwait’s bio-diversity and domesticated animals, how the community can help protect animals, and designed informative bulletin boards to share the story of their respective animal. Each grade level also designed and conducted their very own fundraiser, with games or items selling for 250 fils. On the final day of the Week, seven animals from K’S PATH visited the school to meet and interact with the students. This included Kim and Jolie the dogs, Vader the tortoise, Oliver the goat, Walter and Arthur the ducks and Hercules the hamster. They were accompanied by K’S PATH staff members and a senior volunteer. We conducted three special educational sessions for over 600 students to talk about animal care, answer students’ queries and thank them for their great efforts in raising funds to provide care, medicines and food for the shelter animals. Children took turns feeding the goat, playing with the dogs and meeting the hamster and tortoise, being mindful of the importance of understanding animal behavior and handling animals with compassion. It is the expansion of these activities that will change the hearts and minds of people in Kuwait and improve the welfare situation for all species ranging from our pets to migratory birds. We hope to continue to expend our education program and reach many more students. If you would like to learn more about our education program please visit our website at www.kspath.org or e-mail us at info@kspath.org April 2013

Fajer Al-Mazidi Expanding music talents in Kuwait One of the few establishments of its kind has renowned professionals helping students grow and increase their musical talent www.citypageskuwait.com

Organizers wrote in the competition’s program brochure important words: “We are continuing the efforts to nationalize the Emirates Youth Symphony Orchestra, while spreading musical culture among the ethnically diverse population of the UAE and GCC; in order to create more regional cooperation.” A key objective of the Festival and competition is the encouragement and development of young musicians in the UAE, GCC and internationally; thus we hold the GCC competition in conjunction with the Emirates International Peace Music Festival for young virtuosos. The first prizewinners in each category and instrument got the opportunity to perform at the Winner Concert on March 3rd, 2013 and the Laureate – Grand Prix Holder had the opportunity to perform with EYSO and Guest orchestras during the Festival. About Kuwait Music Academy: Started in continuation of the great tradition of musical excellence established by Kuwait’s Treasure of Talents, and the Kuwait Chamber Philharmonic, Cezary and Anne Owerkowicz, along with young Kuwaiti entrepreneur Fajer Al-Mazidi, the Kuwait Music Academy (KMA) was founded. The first academy of its kind in the Gulf region, the school was established exactly 20 years after the initial launching of the Young Musician Program at the Kuwait Chamber Philharmonic. Fajer Al-Mazidi herself was one of the many young students of the program, almost ten years ago, learning piano under the tutelage of Cezary Owerkowicz himself, and earning her place as one of his most favored students. She went on to study Business Management and Finance at Kuwait University, which would later come in handy when it came to establishing and running the Kuwait Music Academy.

Expand: The idea occurred to start the school a year ago, so they began to take the necessary steps to establish such an institution. It is an attempt to develop the great musical resource that already exists in Kuwait with the help of highly academic polish teachers who studied in the most famous music schools

Theory : The school offers courses in music theory, piano, vocals, and jazz, but plans to expand later to include violin , guitar and flute, and eventually include a full orchestra. The current staff include Cezary and Anna Owerkowicz, both of whom are professors of piano, both graduated of the Chopin Academy, with distinction, as well as Kinga and Karol Masternak, who graduated from the Music Academy in Poland. Dr. Oana Andrea Severin who graduated from Enescu University, Romania, will be teaching violin, jazz and vocals, whilst Piotr Podemski (M.A., Chopin Music University) also teaches piano. The academy, which opened Saturday, Sept 8 2012, fills a hole in the market where there is no consistent professional musical training in Kuwait at all age and skill levels. The academy exists both to harness the talents of young musicians, as well as help garner and develop the tastes who simply have a love for music. Currently, 100 students are enrolled, and the program has seen students from as many as 35 different countries of origins.

Program: Many of the students of the Treasure of Talents program have gone on and continued in their path of musical excellence, in prestigious music school in Europe, and won acclaimed prizes such as the Chopin Grand Prix. The program runs on the International Exams of the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music, London, UK, which are run under the patronage of Queen Elizabeth II. The program also works in association with the Warsaw Music academy, to run the Chopin Grand Prix on an annual basis in Kuwait. As such, in keeping with the great legacy they have created in Kuwait, more students are now being provided with the opportunity to receive formal musical training alongside their studies, and receive instruction from fully trained professionals at a very high level. This, along with the semiannual opportunities for students to showcase their talents in the program’s competitions, is Cezary and Anna’s way of ensuring that talents in Kuwait are allowed full space to grow and flourish, in order to compete on an international scale in the near future. FOOD Tasting

Kuwait’s newest Japanese Restaurant

Koji, a well-hidden restaurant but definitely worth looking for by those in search of good Japanese food

Just like some things are worth waiting for, good food is worth searching for. Koji Japanese Restaurant is one of those places. Hidden behind the HSBC Tower in Qibla area.

By Claudia Lozano The Japanese restaurant opened its new doors last October and we at CityPages got the chance to go and taste their menu. As we walked past their outside sitting are, we were welcomed by ladies in red kimonos who showed us to out table and brought us a nice warm green tea to kick off our night. They brought us some menus with a wide variety of choices, from appetizers, soups, salads, all the way to maki, sushi and sashimi. They also brought www.citypageskuwait.com

us an iPad, which had all the pictures of their menu. This is a great idea because, even though a food is appreciated for its taste, it is through the eyes one gets to see how appealing a dish might be. As we waited for our dishes, we could see other areas the restaurant had to offer, a sushi bar and a live station table, which we got to sit at the for our last course. The first dish we shared was the Kani Crab Salad. Made with thin slices of sweet peach, avocado, crunchy lettuce and crispy thin onion strips with thin crispy crabsticks. One of our team members, Mohamed Al-Sharrah, said he hasn’t been able to find this kind of salad anywhere in Kuwait, and was happy to have found it at Koji. We then had Kani Furai. These lightly breaded crabsticks came with a honey ume sauce that was sweet, light and creamy. The guys thought the Kani Furai was less crunchy than what they are used to, but I thought it was a good combination because it was crunchy enough, which didn’t take away from the softness of the crabstick. The guys also ordered Edamame, which we all recommend as a great starter. The beans came quickly April 2013

and boiled to perfection. As you pealed them, the beans had a bright green color to them. They were very good with the spicy sauce they came with, which along with the crunch; it brought out the earthy flavors of the beans. This is a great healthy appetizer that we recommend you try. Shrimp Tempura is a must on all Japanese restaurants. Koji’s shrimp tempura came with a slice of lemon on the side, had a light batter and was well fried. The crust was light and crunchy and the shrimp was well cooked inside. WE would also recommend their Koji Platter. It came with fresh pink slices of salmon and a variety of different rolls, among them a California a roll. The presentation of the platter was very appealing and inviting. We all shared the different rolls, taking in the slices of ginger with a little soy sauce in between rolls to reset our palates in anticipation of the new rolls to come. Salmon Edomae Sushi and the Hamachi Negi were good as well. The salmon and Hamachi were both fresh, nice taste. I liked the Hamachi Negi better because it had avocado slides and raw onion, somehow the combination worked well. When we got the Sensei Platter it was evident this platter was a fish only platter. It came salmon, which we had tried before, smoked salmon made into a roll with capers and onion. The platter also came with fresh pink tuna, hamour fish rolled up with thing slices of peach and three kinds of caviar, one of them with a wasabi flavor, served on cucumber tubes. The one I liked the best was the eel that came with the skin on covered by a sweet think sauce sprinkled with sesame seeds. If you like different kinds of fish, this is the platter for you. Then we moved to the live show station, where our chef Robert was waiting. Between the clacking of the www.citypageskuwait.com

steel spatula and the sizzling of the grill, our chef started making music as he cooked. He started by placing some eggplants, sweet potatoes, zucchini, chicken and shrimp. We were all eagerly watching his every move as we made some tricks with the salt and peppershaker, along with the spatula and a knife. Chef Robert told us it took him a year to learn all the tricks, “and a lot of practice,” he added with a smile. He was very funny and charming, which made the live cooking show more engaging. Towards the end he pulled out some butter squares, beef and a salad made out with green and red sweet peppers, carrots and soy sauce. The show’s production was amazing, and so was the smell coming from the grill. By the time we got to try, everything was cooked nicely. The chicken had a nice sear, which helped to keep all its juices inside. The beef was tender with a little bit of garlic to bring out its flavor and the shrimp was nicely cooked. We finished our meal marathon with a nice vanilla fried ice cream and a green tea ice cream served with azuki bean, chocolate and mint, which was very refreshing. Whether you come here with family, friends or alone, Koji’s menu gives you an extensive variety of dishes to try from. The presentation of each dish is clean and appealing, with enough portions to share or get a platter which will satisfy your cravings. Indulge, be Mangaawy at Scoop A Cone Introducing this season’s hottest flavor. Scoop A Cone features the richness and sweetness of the Alphonso mango in many different ways, bringing you many tasty treats based on this fantastic fruit. By Claudia Lozano

As the temperature rises in Kuwait, it’s hard not to crave something cold, and Scoop A Cone has exactly what your taste buds are craving — Alphonso Mango. CityPages visited the newest location of Scoop A Cone in Salmiya, Aknan Tower, Street 6, Block 3. This is a great location were students, young adults, and women can come, relax and enjoy their free Wi-Fi, outside seating area or spend some chill time inside where the air conditioner is pumping as well as the pop songs. The atmosphere and staff are friendly, and the walls and seats covered in creamy tones, makes the ambiance more relaxed and welcoming. Everyday the secret concoctions of the Alphonso Mango, and other flavors, make their way to all Scoop A Cone locations. If you need more reasons to visit Scoop A Cone, remember they are known for serving Gelato, not ice cream. Ice cream is pumped with air, which makes the www.citypageskuwait.com

ice cream softer, easier to scoop, but also it melts quicker. A Gelato, because it is not pumped with air, can still hold its density and firmness without melting or loosing its smoothness. Gelato is richer in flavor, it’s wholesome, made with natural flavoring, smooth, creamier, and they are also lower in calories and fat. This caters to anyone’s craving, men or women, children or adults. Once you eat at Scoop A Cone you’ll notice how ice cream is a thing of the past, Gelato is much more satisfying. That’s exactly why Scoop A Cone is different and proud to bring their Gelato to your palate. Starting in April, until the end of June, all Scoop A Cone locations are bringing Kuwait the tasty flavors of the Alphonso Mango. People don’t need to wait any longer for this seasonal fruit, known to be the best in richness, sweetness and flavor, as it can

be found now in a liquid, solid or smooth forms — Shakes, Bonbons, Mine Cones, G-Pops, Gelato and Yogurt. Their Mango milkshake, served on a tall glass and topped with whipped cream is rich in flavor and smooth, with the perfect creaminess and chill. Although most adults will crave a nice scoop of their mango Gelato, which is also smooth and creamy, their mango yogurt, which is a little bit tangier with a hint of sweet bitterness, is also rich in flavor. Most women and children will be able to enjoy and indulge on their bonbons and mini cones. The bonbons, served as the perfect bite size come on a wooden stick. Their

mini cones are served on a waffle mini cone, which adds some crunch to the bite. Both have a sweet mango cover that softly breaks as you bite into it, and slowly melts in your tongue, making the richness of the mango flavor be felt on every bite. The mango G-Pop is a mouthful, full of flavor, and its size is as big as its flavor —exquisite. Scoop A Cone is the place to be this spring/summer season, with their private outside seating area, and their eye-catching atmosphere in key locations through out Kuwait — Bairaq Mall, Al Kout Mall, Sea Shell Resort on Julaia, and their two newest locations in Dasma and Salmiya. Even if you don’t crave Alphonso mango, Scoop A Cone has many different flavors you can choose from, from their sugar free strawberry and chocolate to their best selling Ferrero Roche bonbons, which taste as real as the chocolate itself. Don’t want to stop by for a Gelato? They still serve, from 8a.m. until midnight on weekdays or 2a.m. on weekends, hot beverages, freshly toasted sandwiches, cakes, and other light meals. But if you can’t come here, Scoop A Cone can come to you with their catering and delivery options, or take a quick drive to their Dasma location’s drive thru. Scoop A Cone can also come to you. Their friendly staff and convenient colorful Kart can make their way to all sorts of events, and cater for birthday parties, weddings and special occasions. Whether you get them at the store, through a quick drive thru or catered right to you, Scoop A Cone has their customizable Bonbons and amazing Gelato flavors that are sure to satisfy your taste buds anywhere you get them from. BEYONCÉ IN H&M SUMMER COLLECTION

{Fashion}

H&M is proud to announce a new partnership for its summer campaign with global superstar Beyoncé. The entertainer, who kicks off her sold out Mrs. Carter Show World Tour on April 15, will appear in television and print ads featuring pieces from the H&M summer collection. The print and outdoor billboards introduce Beyoncé as Mrs. Carter in H&M, reflecting the idea that all women can be all things: strong, vulnerable, maternal, fun, and playful. The clothing will be available beginning of May in H&M stores worldwide and online. “I’ve always liked H&M’s focus on fun and affordable fashion. I really loved the concept

we collaborated on to explore the different emotions of women represented by the four elements – fire, water, earth and wind. It was a beautiful shoot on a tropical island. It felt more like making a video than a commercial,” says Beyoncé. “H&M’s summer campaign starring Beyoncé is an epic fantasy, with glamour and drama. It was amazing to watch her on the shoot make it all look effortless – a quality that makes her such an icon for women around the world. The campaign is the essence of Beyoncé, and also

the essence of H&M this summer,” says Donald Schneider, creative director at H&M. “In the campaign Beyoncé is wearing the key pieces from H&M you need for life in the sun this summer,” says Ann-Sofie Johansson, H&M’s head of design. “There’s the perfect bodycon dress, as well as a flowing sun dress that makes a real statement. And of course there are the bikinis, especially the fringed bikini. What makes these pieces even more special is that Beyoncé herself had input into the design, and they are full of her own personal style.” The summer campaign features swimwear and beachwear pieces as well as a tie-dye bikini from this summer’s H&M for Water collection. Twenty-five percent of sales from the H&M for Water collection will be donated to H&M for WaterAid. Since 2002, H&M’s initiative with WaterAid has raised £2,650,000. The campaign images were shot in Nassau in the Bahamas by photographers Inez van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin, while the commercial was directed by Jonas Åkerlund. The commercial highlights the opposing nature of the four basic elements and will be available to view online in its entirety, with edited versions for TV. The commercial also features a new song from Beyoncé, “Standing On the Sun,” which will be available worldwide online and hm.com beginning of May.

THE LOGO ON THE WALL A student presently studying Accounting at the American University of the Middle East remembers a teacher! Ali recalls ‘I did not know who Ms. Johnson was until I received a letter about the fashion event Iszonica Modelling School was organising. The logo was on the top of the page. I was a secondary student at the time when I saw the Iszonica logo painted on the wall in the basement hall. Ms. Johnson had recently joined the school and had organised a fashion and etiquette event with a number of female students. Four years later and here I was going to work with the teacher behind the logo.’ Michelle quotes ‘I feel humbled and blessed that Ali remembered the event. I did not know him as he was a senior student and I was teaching in the middle School but I feel proud today to feature his designs in my event. May Ali continue to aim high and find ways to express his unique designs that set him apart from everyone else.’ Michelle reflects;’ it’s in moments like this where I have the opportunity to help promote individual talent that I find most joy!’ April 2013

Lamborghini Veneno The covers have been taken off the Lamborghini Veneno at the Geneva Motor Show 2013. The Lamborghini Veneno celebrates the Italian brand's 50th anniversary. Only three unique units of the Lamborghini Veneno will be built and sold with more than one million KD plus tax price tag. Despite the extreme price tag, all three units have already been sold! Its design is consistently focused on optimum aerodynamics and cornering stability, giving the Veneno the real dynamic experience of a racing prototype, yet it is fully homologated for the road. With a maximum output of 750 hp, the Veneno accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in just 2.8 seconds and the top speed for this street-legal racing car stands at 355 km/h. The Lamborghini Veneno features a twelve-cylinder power unit with a displacement of 6.5 liters, an extremely fast-shifting 7-speed ISR transmission with 5 driving modes and permanent all-wheel drive, as well as a racing chassis with pushrod suspension and horizontal spring/damper units. Above all, the Veneno benefits from the very special expertise that Automobili Lamborghini possesses in the development and execution of carbon-fiber materials – the complete chassis is produced as a CFRP monocoque, as is the outer skin of this extreme sports car. The inside, also, features innovative, Lamborghini-patented materials, such as Forged Composite and CarbonSkin. Fully in keeping with the tradition of the brand, the name of the Veneno originates

from a legendary fighting bull. Veneno was the name of one of the strongest and most aggressive fighting bulls ever. He was also famous for being one of the fastest bulls in the history of bullfighting. His name became popular in 1914, when he fatally wounded the famous torero José Sánchez Rodríguez during the bullfight in the arena Sanlúcar de Barrameda’s, Andalusia, Spain. DMC Ferrari F12 SPIA DMC Germany have officially launched their own unique take on the Ferrari F12 Berlinetta, the DMC Ferrari F12 SPIA. The German tuning firm is hoping to capitalise on the success of their Lamborghini Aventador bodykit released last year. The DMC Ferrari F12 SPIA is one of the first Ferrari based projects DMC has taken on. Performance modifications are soft for the moment. The DMC Ferrari F12 SPIA’s power rating increases from 740hp up to 764hp. This allows the Italian supercar to reach speeds of over 350km/h. The power increase is down to a Titanium Exhaust system which also creates a better sound and reduced weight. The DMC Ferrari F12 SPIA gets a complete carbon fiber body kit. The parts include a new front diffuser, lip spoiler, front hood, optional roof scoop, side skirts, rear spoiler lip and a rear diffuser. The parts bolt onto the existing brackets which means that the car can easily be returned to its OEM look. The wheels are 22 inch forged units that hide the a set of sport springs. The wheels measure 9,5×21 and use Pirelli Sport Tires in dimensions 255/30. The rear measures 12×22 with 335/25 tires. DMC can carry out interior refinements too. From Italian fine leathers to carbon fiber, the DMC Ferrari F12 SPIA can be designed to cater for the client’s own individual tastes. Small and medium projects can be carried out in-house, larger projects will involve shipping the car to DMC’s German headquarters.
