continue to be set out each week or only when full, depending on preference. Three sizes will be available free-of-charge. After using the delivered 64-gallon cart, you will have until October 1 to request to switch to a different size, at no cost. Residents can order a smaller 35-gallon or larger 96-gallon cart by contacting the DPW at (248) 624 -0141. The three cart sizes are on display at City Hall in the lobby area. The high-tech carts and singlestream recycling is new and different from how recyclables have been collected in the past. It’s the future for responsible resource conservation. Please view the link for details.

Wixom recycling bins have evolved for the 21st century. You will find new high-tech carts dropped off at your doorsteps this summer as the City launches its first-ever singlestream recycling program. The new carts offer many benefits. They are easier and more convenient to take to the curb. The 64-gallon size encourages everyone to recycle more. Also, new fuelefficient, low-emission vehicles will be used to collect the materials.

Feel free to contact RRRASOC with questions regarding recycling, trash disposal, yard waste, or household hazardous waste at (248) 208-2270. You can also email RRRASOC at rrrasoc@aol.com.

DETECT AND PROTECT AGAINST CARBON MONOXIDE

The Fire Department is sponsoring “CAMP 911”, a five day safety camp for students 9–11 years old. Students participate in fire activities including “Search and Rescue”, fire drills, basic first aid and fire extinguisher training.

ADOPT-A-BOX PROGRAM Wixom’s Department of Public Works (DPW) offers the use of a 9-cubic yard box container to assist Wixom residents in disposing of large quantities of compostable yard waste. There is a $25 fee per drop, which helps off-set the cost of labor and equipment. Yard waste disposal is free. The use of the boxes are on a first-come-first-serve basis and runs from April through November (weather permitting).

What is carbon monoxide? Carbon monoxide (CO) is a nonirritating, odorless, colorless gas that is somewhat lighter than air. A byproduct of incomplete burning of coal, wood, charcoal, natural gas, fuel oil, kerosene, gasoline, fabrics and plastics, it is the leading cause of poisoning deaths in the United States. What are the main sources of CO? There are four main sources of CO in the environment: Automobile exhaust Faulty heating equipment Fires Paint and varnish strippers What are the symptoms of CO poisoning? Shortness of breath Nausea Headaches Dizziness Light headedness Infants, in particular, are more susceptible to CO poisoning. This means that unborn or newborn babies may suffer more serious effects than adults, even at the same levels of exposure. How can I avoid CO poisoning in the home? CO poisoning is entirely preventable, if a few simple steps are followed: Have gas appliances checked periodically for proper operation. Make sure flues, chimneys and vents are clear of debris and in good working order. Install CO monitors in the home. Check them regularly and make sure they are maintained properly. Do not use unvented space heaters, gas stoves, charcoal grills or Sternotype fuels as sources of heat. Do not cook on charcoal or gas grills indoors.

FRIENDS OF THE LIBRARY We tried it-you liked it The Silent Auction, conducted for two weeks in March generated a lot of interest and produced $344 to benefit the Library. Thanks to those who donated sales items and thanks to those who purchased them. Wanted- a few strong bodies While the Friends always welcome new members with open arms, we can always use a strong pair of arms to help us move boxes, particularly in connection with our used book sales. So if you know of anyone who wants to increase their muscle strength, please send them our way. They can become a member, or simply put in a few volunteer hours for community service credit. Did you know? From the first contribution of $191.67 the Friends of the Wixom Library made in 1978, the amount has grown to more than $120,000? That's a lot of program and summer reading materials, electronic equipment, licensing fees, books, aquarium maintenance, and computers, plus countless other items. You name it, and the Friends are probably involved in one way or another. Join us and make a difference in your community. Coming events: School's Out Children's Book SaleJune 26 Fall Used Book Sale- October 17-20 Quarterly Meeting- July 10, 11 am, Library Meeting Room.
