2012 Summer/Fall Guide to Leisure Activities

Page 1

A Message from the Director:

Welcome to the City’s 2012 Summer/Fall Guide to Leisure Activities. As you will see, this issue has a patriotic theme. This patriotic theme has been felt by the City for the past several months and we hope to carry it through the rest of 2012. The Community Services Department held a benefit concert (see page 3) to honor a triple amputee veteran. The outpouring of support from the community and the general sense of doing something good has left a mark on the community that will be felt for many years. Thank you Temecula! We invite you to attend our annual Community Services Expo on Saturday, May 12th, to learn about the vast array of special events, programs, summer camps, and classes offered throughout the Summer and Fall months. Whether it is a concert in the park, a ballet or classical music performance, a stroll through Temecula history, a day at the park, a camp for the kids, there is something for everyone! We hope you experience the quality of life Temecula strives to provide its residents. If our staff can be of any assistance, please do not hesitate to contact the Community Services Department at 694-6480. We are here for you! Sincerely,

Aaron Adams Executive Director of Community Services

The City of Temecula Community Services Department Mission Statement:

“To provide high quality parks and recreation facilities and services that our community can be proud of.”

Creating Community Through People, Parks & Programs

“It’s What We Do!”

The City of Temecula and the Community Services Department had the honor of making a difference in the life of a wounded veteran, which in turn has had a profound impact on our community. Marine Corporal Juan Dominguez lost both legs and his right arm on October 23, 2010, when he fell down an embankment and landed on a buried bomb in Afghanistan. His own words express the remarkable patriotism he feels for his country, “Don’t be sad for me. I’d do it again for my country.” The City partnered with the Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers Foundation and the Gary Sinise Foundation to create a spectacular benefit concert on the steps of the Temecula Civic Center to raise funds to benefit Cpl. Dominguez. This concert was held on March 1, 2012, and featured actor/musician Gary Sinise and his Lt. Dan Band, and performances by The Brewer Boys, and Danny Rodriguez, “America’s Singing Cop”. Patriot Artist, Scott LoBaido, live painted on stage an original work of art during the concert which was auctioned to benefit the charity. In a moving moment, Cpl. Dominguez joined Gary Sinise on stage and played the drums with one arm, during their performance of “Smooth” by Carlos Santana. The citizens of Temecula came out in full force to support Cpl. Dominguez and that support resulted in $130,000 in funds to assist the Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers Foundation to build Cpl. Dominguez a new “smart home” in Temecula. The city is proud to have Juan choose Temecula as his new home. We invite all citizens to join us on the 4th of July to give Juan and his family a Temecula welcome as he is honored as the Grand Marshal of this year’s 4th of July Parade. Juan is a true American hero and it shows... “My injuries that I sustained in Afghanistan against the enemy forces were well worth it. I love this country.”

Exploring Natural History Exploring Native American Heritage Exploring New World Influences Exploring Pioneer Life

In the early days, the sweet taste of Angelica was produced from the wine grapes brought to the valley by the Spanish missionaries. Temecula Wine Country is now a multimillion dollar industry, producing award winning wines and bringing tourists to our lovely valley. Take a look at the development of this local industry from the missions to modern day and discover how it has turned Temecula into a charming destination.

The Old West June 30 - September 16 American “Wild Western” clothing developed in the 19th Century as an amalgamation of European and Native American attire. The uniquely colorful and interesting clothing worn by people on the frontier first captured the public imagination in the 1880’s and has been an influence on fashion ever since. Take a look back at daily wear in the Old West during the late 1800’s. See women’s dresses; men’s and women’s hats; chaps and spurs; pocket watches; along with rifles and pistols. Come to our exhibit opening and meet the Old Town Temecula Gunfighters who are co-sponsoring this exhibit.

The Case of the Steadfast Secretary: The Betty Burke Collection September 29-January 6 Betty Burke, Erle Stanley Gardner’s last employee, was a vibrant fixture in “Uncle Erle’s” office. She was an optimistic worker who knew how to have fun. In her many years of working for both Erle and Jean Gardner, she collected a lifetime of memories. Join us for a first look at Betty’s collection of Gardner memorabilia.

Vail Ranch Conservation

The Temecula Valley Museum is undertaking an extensive conservation effort to protect maps, documents and photographs recently donated by Whitney Wilkinson. There are over 2,000 documents and photographs in this significant collection accumulated by the original owners of Vail Ranch. The Ranch extended for 87,000 acres from the Santa Rosa Plateau to Vail Lake. The importance of this collection is reflected in the source and dates of the items. Many items date from the mid-1800’s and are unique and provide rare primary research opportunities. Vail Ranch was the dominant economic entity from its founding in 1905 to its sale in 1964. Temecula’s history is intertwined in these documents.

Senior Golden Years

Mary Phillips Senior Center Garden Update!

Golden Years Saturday Social

Don’t sit inside…call us for your next ride...to the Senior Center! The Transport Program offers door-to-door round-trip transportation to the Center. Days: Mon-Fri Fee: $.50/Resident; $1/Non-resident Pick-up Time: 9:00-10:30am Return Time: 1:30-3:30pm Reservations: Call 694-6464 at least 24 hours in advance. 2011 gave us bumper crops of tomatoes, cabbage, corn, eggplant and peppers. Currently, the garden is planted with potatoes, celery, cabbage and lettuce. Planting crops in small beds uses up lots of nutrients as the produce strips the nutrients from the soil. We use organic fertilizer so we can continue to produce an abundance of delicious and healthy vegetables. After each harvest staff and volunteers are hard at work, turning the soil and adding the much needed vitamins and minerals to the soil. Garden volunteers were able to help many local seniors subsidize their food bills with fresh vegetables. Special thanks to John Flohr, for his expert horticultural knowledge and advice; along with countless volunteer hours donated to maintain the garden. If you would like to visit the garden or become a volunteer, contact the Center at 694-6464.
