E-Devices Available For Checkout

By: Audrey Tolle Library Director The Sanger Public Library offers several different types of electronic devices for cardholders to check out, and we plan to add others soon!

Playaways are small, lightweight players pre-loaded with an audiobook. They have been a part of the library’s audio collection for a few years, and we’ve recently expanded the number of titles for both children and adults. While we have downloadable audiobooks through two of our digital services, they aren’t always the best option for people who aren’t comfortable with or don’t have the time to figure out the steps involved in getting audiobooks onto their smartphones. Playaways are convenient; they can be plugged into a car’s auxiliary jack, and thanks to their small size, can easily be used while exercising, doing housework, or other activities.

We have also had Launchpad tablets available for several years. They come pre-loaded with different educational apps, eBooks, and other content for specific age groups and don’t have Internet access. Most of our fifteen Launchpads are for younger children, although we do have a few for teens and adults, mainly for ACT and SAT preparation and learning Spanish. We require that borrowers have had a Sanger or other NTLC library card in good standing for at least 6 months and sign an agreement form before checking one out. We also charge late fines of $1.00/day on these items.

Our latest addition to the e-device lineup is Hotspots. We received ECF funding to offer this service through the first half of next year. Nine T10 Mobile Hotspots can be checked out to patrons 18 years or older who’ve had a Sanger library card for three or more months. There are some other requirements, stipulated in the policy and agreement form. Like Launchpads, a fine of $1.00/day will be assessed if they are more than three days late. We want to make these valuable devices available to as many of our cardholders as possible, and hope those who check them out will abide by the policies we’ve established to achieve this goal.
