Winter represents new beginnings with fresh fallen snow or happy snowmen being built by bundled up kids. It’s also a new beginning for me, as your newly elected mayor of Red Deer. Growing up here, I know the excitement of receiving the Community Services Activity and Program Guide, perusing the wide range of activities and opportunities, picking out new things to try or choosing some of your old favourites. This excitement extends to now, as I am very happy to bring you the Winter 2014 guide. Once you have gone through the guide and circled the activities and programs of interest, the registration page details how to register from the comfort of your home, either online or by phone. If you prefer to come and visit our friendly staff, you may register in person at the Collicutt, G.H. Dawe Community or Recreation Centres. You may use the form on page three to organize your choices. I hope you enjoy seeing the eclectic range of activities and programs our City staff and community have worked so hard to put together. I am confident there is something to suit all tastes, ages and skill levels, from beginner to advanced. These pages are filled with fun, well-being, community and fitness, all of which make Red Deer such a wonderful place to be. Enjoy the winter season, make the most of it, and I invite you to see what awaits you in our Winter 2014 Community Services Activity and Program Guide. Daddy & Me

Kids Cooking Club

This drop-in play based program is for men and the preschool children in their lives. Operated out of the Kinsmen Family Play Space at Parkland Mall, children and dads, grandparent or dad-like figure can explore toys, experience stories and activities together as well as meet other families.

Our busy lifestyles often leave us with little time to prepare home-cooked meals from scratch. This can lead to eating more fast food or heating up packaged food products. These foods are often high in fat, sugar and salt and may provide little nutrition. Kids Cooking Club provides hands on opportunity for kids 10-12 years old and their parents to learn about healthy food choices and valuable cooking skills. Join us for a Saturday and cook brunch, lunch, and snacks and go home with a supper. Saturday, January 25 or March. Limited space available; $15.00 per family. To register, go to www.fsca.ca.

Taming the Worry Dragons This weekly group is designed to support children as they explore their feelings of fear, anxiety, and worry in a supportive environment. Why Physical Literacy is important to you and your family Across Canada, leaders in recreation, sport and education are working together under the Canadian Sport for Life (CS4L) framework to promote physical literacy for children and youth. Multisport programs are great innovations in this area. Here at The City of Red Deer, we strive to insure that our sport and recreation programs support CS4L by incorporating physical literacy into our programs by: • Providing focused physical literacy development programs for younger children in recreation centers • Ensure HIGH FIVE® training is provided to all staff working with children so they are aware of healthy child development principles, supporting physical literacy development practices • Participants in physical literacy and introductory skill classes are exposed to related sport programs available in the facility or community • Information about physical literacy principals, parental roles, and CS4L principles are distributed to parents through leisure guides and other communication means to assist them in making decisions about their child’s programming SPORTS

Talk to your child about their interests. Find out which sports organizations and/ or City of Red Deer programs are incorporating CS4L in their delivery. Be a part of your children’s daily sport and recreation by helping your child become “Active for Life.” Watch our Physical Literacy story about Hannah, so you can see how being active means being happy. http://www.reddeer.ca/hannaha For more information about CS4L visit www.canadiansportforlife.ca For more information from The City of Red Deer, contact rob.meckling@ reddeer.ca
