ENRICHMENT

Running Dead 5K Corwin M. Nixon Park

Catching the Infection? Bring your friends to Pine Hill Lakes Park for excitement, entertainment, and a challenge. The Running Dead 5K course winds and weaves through the woods and clearings, across creeks, and along the edges of lakes just before sunset. Runners must compete not only against the clock, but against the rugged terrain, narrow pathways, and around Zombies. Your flags are your life and the zombies want them. Runners start with two flags and finishing with no flags disqualifies a runner from winning a time-based award. Don’t worry if you’re not a runner – the last wave will not be timed and just for fun! Can you finish with both lives? The Running Dead 5K race is for ages 13-19. Registration for runners includes race fee, fun, and a T-shirt. Runners who bring in two canned goods to support Mason Food Pantry will receive one extra life. For those 20 years and older, register to be a zombie. Your registration fee includes the infectious excitement and your zombie face painting. After we turn you into a zombie, you’ll be placed strategically throughout the course to take “lives.” Day Date Time Competitive – Chip timed Su 10/19 5:00-6:45P Su 10/19 5:20-6:05P

ARTS & CRAFTS

Young Rembrandts® Drawing Classes Activity Room B

Young Rembrandts focuses on teaching children to draw using demonstration and a structured step-by-step process. This method of directed drawing gives students instructions on how to draw increasingly complex images at a crucial time in their development. Through the process of weekly instruction, students are exposed to a wide variety of subject matter, artistic concept, art history, and mastery of their materials.

Pre-School Drawing Classes Young Rembrandts'® pre-school program is designed with the youngest learners in mind. Subjects that youngsters are familiar with, such as animals and toys, are used along with their favorite learning tools— pictures, stories, touching, and doing—to enhance social and conflict resolution skills while improving listening, fine motor skills, and staying on task. You’ll be amazed at what they create! Day Date Time M 11/3-12/15 5:00-5:45P W 11/5-12/17 5:00-5:45P *No class 11/24, 11/26

Elementary Drawing Classes The secret to our success is that children ALREADY love to draw—we just take their love a little further by giving them a solid foundation that will take their drawings from doodles to confidence-boosting achievements. During our once-a-week classes, we use an innovative step-by-step approach to draw topics your kids can relate to and learn from. Watch your child reach a new level of potential with this engaging, awardwinning program. Young Rembrandts is a different kind of learning and a powerful kind of fun. No lessons repeated! All supplies are provided. Day Date W 11/5-12/17 *No class 11/26

Let’s Think about Nutritional Planning! By Viola Perez, Personal Trainer at Mason community Center For optimal health and fitness, expectations need to be reasonable to ensure success. Successful weight-change strategies embrace small steps, moderate changes, and reasonable goals.

Ride for Hope

In general, focus on healthy eating and activity habits—not just the weight losses and gains. Make nutrition as high a priority as your daily exercise routine. People who eat more nutrient-dense food and engage in regular physical activity are more likely to maintain the proper body weight.

Join Mason Community Center for the second Annual Ride for Hope and support patients and their families affected with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. Participants have the option to choose from one or two hours of riding and partial proceeds will be given to the ALS Foundation.

Plan your diet around these principles and guidelines: •  Adequacy – does your nutritional plan provide sufficient energy and enough of all the nutrients to meet the needs of your body and prevent nutrient deficiency symptoms? •  Balance – are you consuming enough but not too much of each type of food? The essential minerals of calcium and iron, together, are examples of a dietary balance. Milk is rich in calcium but poor in iron. Meat would be used for iron. Whole grains, vegetables, and fruits are also important. •  Kcalories (energy, also known as kilocalories or kcal) – the amount of energy given to your body from a specific type of food. Kcalories should be balanced with the energy being used by your body and are planned based on a person’s weight, height, age, and energy expenditure. You can lower or increase Kcalories each day to adjust your weight. One pound of weight is about 3,500 Kcalories, so removing 500 Kcalories each day will lead to a drop of a pound a week. •  Density - the key to Kcalories is to select foods of high density, which provide more nutrients and fewer Kcalories. •  Moderation – very important when eating. Foods rich in fat and sugar provide enjoyment and energy but have very little nutritional value. Eat them only occasionally and regularly select foods that are low in solid fats and added sugar. •  Variety – eating a wide selection of foods within and among the major food groups will keep meals from being boring. Keep all of these principles in mind and try to eat a healthy diet that includes a variety of fruits and vegetables, whole grains, fatfree or low-fat milk products, lean meats, poultry, fish, legumes, eggs, and nuts. Look for foods that are low in saturated fat, trans fat, cholesterol, salt (sodium), and added sugar. Stay within your daily energy needs for your recommended body weight. Proper diet and physical activity will help make you healthier, reduce your risk of chronic diseases, and promote overall health. Food and physical activity choices are partners in supporting good health. Remember to adjust your diet when weight lifting and exercise classes are added to your weekly routine.

Cold Weather Affects your Play Playing golf in the cold weather can be a challenge. Try to keep a few things in mind so you’ll understand how the weather affects your game. Golf balls fly shorter distances in the cold weather. If you normally hit a pitching wedge 100 yards, you may need to hit a 9 iron. When wearing extra clothing, you may shorten your swing, which can also cause the ball to fly a shorter distance. The courses are not mowed on a daily basis, thus you’ll notice less roll out off the tee and slower putting surfaces. It is also a good idea to move up and play from shorter tees in the winter. This will make winter golf more enjoyable for everyone. When temperatures rise, move back to your normal tees. Assistant Pro at The Golf Center at Kings Island

Pickleball: the NEW Senior Sport! Pickleball is becoming a very popular activity for active seniors at Mason Community Center. This game is a cross between badminton, tennis, and ping pong.

MARTIAL ARTS

Tae Kwon Do Beginner Meeting Rooms

Tae Kwon Do is a well-balanced Korean martial art that specializes in kicking skills. No previous experience is necessary for this class. Adults, teens, and children will train together in a family oriented program.

Pickleball is set up like a mini tennis game using paddles instead of rackets and whiffle balls instead of tennis balls. It’s played on a 20’ x 44’ court and there is a non-volley zone of 7’ from the net. Pickleball can be played in a singles or doubles format. Mason started out with three participants and one net but quickly expanded to about two dozen players and three nets. When the gym floor was refurbished in June, permanent pickleball court lines were added for the courts to meet the need for this growing senior sport. Pickleball currently takes place at 1 p.m. on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Stop by the Senior Center to learn how you can join!

Parents of all participants under the age of 13 are asked to remain on site during class. Please note: A Tae Kwon Do uniform is not required for participation in this class; however, a uniform may be required for any participants who would like to enjoy this program long-term. Member Highlight The Schapman Family

While it wasn’t on his mind when he joined, Mason Community Center helped Chris Schapman become a Top 25 Elite Spartan Race athlete. Sara has completed two half marathons and is planning to finish twice that many in 2015. Three years ago, Chris and Sara Schapman were looking for swim lessons for their three boys and found them at Mason Community Center. They decided to become members so they could use the pool at other times. Since then, they’ve experienced fun and fitness for the entire family. While Mom and Dad work out, the boys visit Kids Korner, where they enjoy all the crafts, games, and activities. At ages 8, 5, and 2, the children get involved in other programs the center offers as well, including Camp Little Feet and School’s Out Fun Days. Family activities are a big hit, too. Together, they’ve enjoyed the climbing wall, both the indoor and outdoor pools, and the field house. “We love having a place to go with the kids…especially in the winter and on rainy days,” Chris says. “They never want to leave when it’s time to go,” added Sara. Kids Korner allows Sara and Chris to take fitness classes together at the center. They have taken tabata, The Ride, GRIT/HIIT, and BODYPUMP classes. “If it wasn't for tabata, I'd probably still just be a runner and doing a basic weight routine,” said Chris. He says the class opened his eyes to alternative fitness options and encouraged him to improve his overall fitness and try other classes like The Ride and BODYPUMP. The fitness center is also a big hit with Sara and Chris. “The Ride, BODYPUMP, and tabata classes provide a well-rounded base for my fitness,” said Chris. taking a class, he likes that the center provides the equipment he needs to work out on his own. You might find him on the stair stepper with the water bag, rowing, using the free weights, standing on a medicine Chris, Joseph, Andrew, Sara, and Michael Schapman ball, balancing on a in Kids’ Korner BOSU, swinging kettle bells, traversing the wall of the outside fitness studio, or monkeying around on the TRX frame. “There are lots of great options,” he says. Sara has found that she loves GRIT and personal training as well as the Friday morning Bring It class. She started personal training three months after her youngest was born and with her personal trainer’s guidance and her own hard work, she accomplished things she never thought possible. “I feel stronger in my 30s than I have my entire life,” she observed, adding that the center has helped her find her inner athlete. “I also discovered how much I enjoy interval training and pushing myself to the limit. I look forward to going to the community center daily.” When asked if they had any advice for people new to the center, they said, “You never know what you are capable of achieving until you try. With the variety of programs Mason Community Center offers, you can start at your level. The staff at the center are welcoming and do their best to help you find your best fit.” October / November 2014

Stroke School

SwimFit

Prerequisite: Pass the Mason Swim Academy Level 5/6 assessment displaying the ability to complete 25 yards each of freestyle with rotary breathing and backstroke. Stroke school is for swimmers who intend to learn advanced elements and stroke efficiency in all four stroke types. The stroke school includes the skills taught in Levels 7 and 8 of the Mason Swim Academy.

Prerequisite: Pass the Mason Swim Academy displaying the ability to complete 25 yards each of freestyle with rotary breathing, backstroke, breast stroke, and butterfly. SwimFit focuses on building the swimmer's strength and endurance in every stroke through drills, multiple laps, and on-deck coaching. SwimFit allows swimmers to get the feeling of being on a swim team without the competition. If a swimmer desires to be on a swim team like the Manta Rays Swim Team at Mason Community Center, SwimFit will provide a smooth transition.
