Since 1985, July has been America’s official park and recreation month. In cooperation with the National Recreation and Park Association, the City of Mason will join other departments to celebrate with this year’s theme of “Out is In.” Together, let’s make 2014 the year Mason goes outside and gets involved in the community through parks and recreation. Here are some ways to help you celebrate being “out!” •  Sunshine Concert Series – Enjoy these free concerts at 6 p.m. on Sundays beginning June 22. For a complete schedule, locations, and special activities for each concert, please see the Sunshine Concert Series listing on page 5 or visit www.imaginemason.org/things-to-do.

•  Moonlight Fishing – Spend a night in the great outdoors at Pine Hill Lakes Park the night of July 11. Learn more below.

•  Scavenger Hunt – Step outdoors and enjoy some family fun with a free scavenger hunt that will help you explore Mason’s parks. Details are on page 5.

•  C elebrate America’s favorite pastime! Visit Mason Sports Park and Corwin M. Nixon Park for the Kings Island Baseball Invitational Tournament on July 3-6 or check out the Great American Baseball Championship at Mason Sports Park on July 8-13. Information on both can be found at www. ohioslargestplayground.com/sports.

•  Walk the Park – Start a new healthy habit and walk through a new Mason park each Monday in July. A personal trainer will provide training tips and structured stretching sessions. See page 13 for registration information.

•  Out Is In Ride - Embrace nature through the sights and sounds of the early evening in this outdoor stationary ride on July 11. See page 13 for details.

Along with the special program opportunities, there are ongoing opportunities to get involved in community events and with organized community groups like the Mason Parks & Recreation Foundation and the City of Mason’s Certified Emergency Response Team (CERT). Express your interest by completing a volunteer application, available at www.imaginemason.org/things-to-do/get-involved.cfm.

Member Highlight

Lara Reynolds

Lara Reynolds has participated in a variety of programs at Mason Community Center since becoming a member over a year ago. As part of the “Better Your Body Bingo” program early this year, she wrote about what motivates her to keep exercising. Perhaps you’ll find some inspiration in her words.

Confident is the New Me

We’ve all heard the catch phrases that surround the ideas of health. “Skinny is the new Black”, and “Strong is the new Beautiful”. Here’s my version… "Confident is the New Me”. I don’t subscribe to the idea that I have to be skinny to be popular, strong to be attractive or anything else that the magazines try to sell. What I buy into is the belief that confidence in myself is what I need, period. I’m not saying that thin isn’t beautiful or strong isn’t attractive. I am saying that without confidence, skinny and strong are just that. Confidence makes you smile bigger, laugh harder and push yourself farther. Confidence allows you to accept the days when you just don’t feel like working out, or the meals that end in dessert. Confidence lets you forgive yourself for gaining a few pounds in the winter months, or

10

June / July 2014

not shaking the baby weight as quickly as you had hoped. Confidence has helped me to keep going to the gym even when I’m not seeing the results I want (because I know I’ll get there eventually!), to smile through workouts even when I’m exhausted, and to encourage others to join me in classes so they can experience what I do. With confidence, your skinny is skinnier, your strong is stronger and your potential is greater. So don’t call me skinny, strong, or pretty… just call me confident! Mason Community Center has played an essential role in getting me to this “confident” frame of mind. It started with Kids Korner, where I was given peace of mind every time I dropped my son off so I could enjoy a workout. He was (and still is!) given such excellent care and attention, has the opportunity to make new friends every day and is comfortable enough that I can confidently go into my workouts. I’ve become a group exercise junky as a result of some pretty great instructors who, from the beginning of my membership, have taken an active role in helping me to get back in shape. I’ve made friends with instructors who continue to push me and show me new ways to meet my goals, encourage me on the bad days and even check in on me when I miss a class. I’ve made friends with other patrons who introduce me to new classes and partner with me to make classes even more fun. I couldn’t ask for a better place to help me feel and be my best!

Everyone loves a strong and slim midsection, right? “Let’s do some core work!” is a phrase used often in the gym to start work on the abdominal muscles. Core and abs go hand in hand, but there is more to the core than just abs. The “core” can be defined as the muscles that stabilize the spine and pelvis. To picture the core of your body, imagine seeing your body with your upper and lower extremities hidden. What’s left is your core. The abs, hips, and lower back are some of the muscles included in the core.

One of the biggest responsibilities of the core is to help with posture. Do you sit hunched over a desk all day? Training your core can prevent poor posture but can only do so much if you’re hunched over the keyboard for fortyplus hours a week. A good tip for people who sit at work is to stay tall through your upper body, keep your head up and your shoulder blades back whenever you start to feel yourself slouching. So how do you get a stronger core? Start by incorporating exercises that will address your core. My favorite exercise is the plank! I think I just heard people moan, but the plank helps develop strength in the core, shoulders, arms, and glutes. It’s a total body exercise in one movement!

NUTRITION

Day Tu,Th

by Steve Kranjc, Personal Trainer at Mason Community Center

The most important thing to know, however, is that every muscle relies on your core. It is the base of all movement and provides stability to the rest of the body. To get that toned midsection, each area needs to be addressed.

The good thing about a plank is that the longer you can hold a plank in place, the more resilient your lower back will be to injury. You can perform a plank anywhere. Just get into a pushup position on the floor. Your forearms should be flat on the floor and elbows bent at 90 degrees so that your shoulders are right over your elbows. The weight distribution should be equal from your toes to your forearms. The most important thing is to be in a straight line from head to feet. This will activate your core muscles and help you have a strong midsection. Oh wait—did I forget to mention the goal is to hold the plank for two minutes? Get out, go to the gym, and plank on!

The Bethesda Post Rehabilitation Program helps recently discharged physical therapy patients transition into their own personal fitness routine. Program participants work with a Certified Athletic Trainer who has access to their medical history, including any precautions or restrictions. By having a working knowledge of the participant's medical history, the trainer is able to tailor a fitness regimen specific to an individual's needs. Goals of the post rehab program include improving strength and range of motion, as well as providing pain relief.

Are you an athlete that is injured or unable to perform due to a past injury? Sign-up for Warm Water Aquatic Training! The Hydroworx Warm Water Pool features a built-in, powered aquatic treadmill that smoothly accelerates from .1 to 8.5 mph. Users are able to correctly simulate land-based walking, running, or sports-specific activities without the bodyweight and joint impact experienced on land. The benefits of aquatic treadmills include:

Golf

Meet The Pro Like many professional golfers, Marianne began playing golf when she was young. Her dad got her started when she was just eight years old. She went on to play for Middletown High School and the University of South Carolina. In the late 1980s, Marianne played the mini-tours in Florida until she qualified for the LPGA tour in 1990. She continued on the LPGA tour until 2006.

Coming: Mason Youth Basketball It’s almost time to start gearing up for the 2014-2015 Mason Youth Basketball season. This league offers basketball play for children in grades 1 through 12 who are residents of the Mason City School District. Registration will begin toward the end of July and continue into September. Please watch for the August/September CenterPoint for pricing, deadlines, and important dates. We look forward to sharing another fun-filled season of basketball with you again this year.

Marianne came to The Golf Center at Kings Island in the spring of 2008 and has been there for the main golf season each year since then. It has been interesting to her to learn the “other side” of tournaments – participating as an organizer rather than a golfer. She gets even more enjoyment out of teaching and passing on the knowledge she has gained during her career to both young golfers and adults looking to improve their game. Marianne likes to “keep it simple” by focusing on the basics—grip, stance, and posture. She loves to talk about the golf swing and how it works. Her goal is to build a golfer’s knowledge of playing the shot with the greatest amount of success and the least amount of risk. “A solid short game can go a long way to lowering scores,” she says. To see how she can help you improve your game, call the pro shop at 513.398.7700. A 40-minute lesson is $50. PGA Professional

RUNNING

TENNIS

Youth Running Club

Tennis

This successful outdoor running program will teach your child the basic techniques for a fulfilling lifetime hobby. The City of Mason is hosting this co-ed program designed to develop teamwork, self-discipline, sportsmanship, and goal achievement through running. All participants will train to complete a 5K run and are invited to participate in the Powder Keg 5K Trail Run in August with their family and friends to showcase their accomplishment. Beginners to advanced runners are encouraged to participate. Sessions will be outdoors except in the case of severe weather.

Tennis programs are provided for juniors and adults. Junior classes will follow the "games" approach to learning tennis. Classes will be half traditional stroke work and half focused on rallying skills. To teach rallying, the class will use bigger balls, fewer court lines, and multiple ball bounces to help kids play "real tennis" before they acquire all the racquet skills needed to play sets. Players will learn ball striking skills, scoring, rallying skills, and basic strategy—all in a fun, stimulating environment.

Adults interested in swim lessons are invited to register for adult group, private, or semi-private lessons. All lessons are held in the Leisure Pool unless otherwise noted.

Infant Water Safety The goal of this private, one-on-one lesson is to promote a positive response to the water environment and teach your 6- to 24-month old baby to float on his or her back and get a breath of air. Prerequisite: Pass current Mason Swim Academy Level 5/6 assessment displaying the ability to complete 25 yards each of freestyle with rotary breathing and backstroke. Stroke school is for swimmers who intend to learn advanced elements and stroke efficiency in all four stroke types. The stroke school includes the skills taught in Levels 7 and 8 of the Mason Swim Academy.

Prerequisite: Pass a current Mason Swim Academy assessment displaying the ability to complete 25 yards each of freestyle with rotary breathing, backstroke, breast stroke, and butterfly. The focus is on building strength and endurance in every stroke through drills, multiple laps, and on-deck coaching.
