NEW GROCERY STORE ON TAP IN CITY “Our Roots are European, but our vegetables are grown here”

Have you noticed a new building emerging on Tara Boulevard in our City ?

LIDL (pronounced lee-dul) is a full-service grocery store, offering fresh baked goods and a variety of food items, wines, and other staples. LIDL offers high quality and low prices, and a great shopping experience. New products are introduced each Wednesday. The LIDL App helps shoppers manage their lists, explore new products, and save coupons for checkout. LIDL is not your cookiecutter grocery store; they have exacting standards for their products.

In 1973, the first modern Lidl store opened in Ludwigshafen, Germany.

With only three employees and about 500 products, this small store became the foundation of LIDL’s far-reaching expansion.

During the 1990s, LIDL began opening stores outside of Germany and within a few years, LIDL had stores all across Europe. LIDL now operates more than 11,000 stores and is active in 32 countries, employing around 287,000 people globally. Their mission is to offer customers the highest quality fresh produce, meat, baked goods and household products at the lowest possible prices. Other metro locations include Marietta, Mableton, Peachtree Road, Briarcliff Parkway, and Lawrenceville (opening June 10) Grand opening date in Jonesboro has not been set at the present time. Get to Know… Eric Travis

Get to Know...Catherine Graham

Eric Travis has been employed by the City of Jonesboro since 1990; soon to be 30 years of dedicated service! Eric performs specialized tasks for public works at all the city parks, City Hall and other locations. He is known for his dependability. Eric enjoys watching cowboy and scary movies and especially sports in his leisure time. He has two sons: Eric, 23 and Rico, 22. Thank you Eric Travis for your service to Jonesboro!

Catherine Graham serves as Probation Supervisor for the City. She is responsible for probation cases, jail visits, court hearings, and reviewing and caseload supervision for other probation officers. Cathy brings expertise to her role, having worked in parole for 14 years and misdeCarolyn and Walter Fryza meanor probation for 5 1/2 years, with who will celebrate their Jonesboro since 2014. She enjoys reading 50th Wedding Anniversary and gardening as well as visiting the beach on July 18. They say, “We have had a lot of happy and the lake with her husband, Dan. years and hope to have many more.”

Jonesboro Organizes Task Force on Aging On May 11, 2020, the City Council approved organizing a Task Force on Aging comprised of citizens, community leaders from nonprofit organizations, and city personnel. The focus of the group will be Senior health, housing, transportation and community infrastructure, and social participation and inclusion. The group will center on our aging community’s needs for owner-occupied and rental housing for senior citizens. The Task Force will investigate the tools, policies, and procedures to alleviate the challenges to senior housing such as modified zoning policies, higher density incentives, public/private partnerships and utilization of trust funds. They will develop a comprehensive plan to address affordability for seniors and make recommendations to the City Council which may include draft resolutions or ordinances.

The overarching goal for this task force will be to focus resources on prudent investments that will result in social and economic benefits for our community. By bringing this new entity into fruition, we are making a pledge that our City is committed to giving the Seniors of Jonesboro the support they need to remain in the City they have always called home and also a strategic way for us to attract newcomers to experience “Life in the Boro!”

UP CLOSE WITH CLAYTON COUNTY WATER AUTHORITY “Quality Water...Quality Services”

Clayton County Water Authority (CCWA) is recognized throughout the world for its sustainability practices and has been named one of the top “Water Wise Communities” in the U.S. and a “Utility of the Future Today” by industry peers.

General Manager H. Bernard Franks has a passion for the water industry and the Clayton County community. He was promoted to General Manager in June 2018 with more than 20 years of experience at the Authority where he worked his way up the ranks. Franks started working at CCWA in 1996 as a Water Service Mechanic. Since that time, he has held a multitude of roles at the Authority, making him an expert on all that is water and its management. Mr. Franks holds many licenses and certifications with the water industry. Franks is active in the GA Association of Water Professionals (GAWP), American Water Works Association (AWWA), GA Rural Water Association (GRWA) and GA Utility Contractors Association (GUCA). Franks also has served as the Clayton County Chamber of Commerce Board Chair. He lives in Jonesboro with his wife Lenora and their sons Bernard, Joshua and Cameron. Thank you, Mr. Bernard Franks, for your years of service to our City and County!

Chairman, Board of Directors Robin Malone Mr. Robin Malone was appointed to the Clayton County Water Authority Board of Directors in 2016. He was elected by the Water Authority Board as Chair in January 2020.

He is the Director of Development for Southern Crescent Habitat for Humanity and brings with him years of experience in the commercial banking industry. Mr. Malone is a graduate of Leadership Georgia Class of 2019 and Leadership Clayton Class of 2015. He resides in Jonesboro. Special appreciation to Mr. Robin Malone for his willingness to serve our City and County in this important role at CCWA.
