LEGALLY BLONDE THE MUSICAL A co-production as part of the CAST Program

Friday, Aug. 25, 2017 | 7 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 26, 2017 | 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. A fabulously fun award-winning musical — based on the adored movie — Legally Blonde the Musical follows the transformation of Elle Woods as she tackles stereotypes, snobbery and scandal in pursuit of her dreams. This action-packed musical explodes on the stage with memorable songs and dynamic dances. Legally Blonde is presented by the Collaborative Artists’ Summer Training (CAST) Program. The CAST Program is a unique, six-week training experience for young performers (ages 15 to 24) which offers classes and workshops in singing, dancing and acting, in addition to producing a full musical.


GENERATION HOPE

AN EVENING WITH JIMMY BELABRE FROM HAITI Wednesday, Sept. 13, 2017 | 7:30 p.m. The award-winning documentary, Generation Hope, features stories of children who grew up in extreme poverty but were able to better their lives by staying in school, thanks to help from Mary’s Meals — a global charity that provides a daily meal in a place of education to over 1.2 million children. Jimmy Belabre was one child who received Mary’s Meals growing up in Cite Soleil, a city the UN once declared as “the most dangerous place on Earth”. Jimmy will share his experience growing up in Cite Soleil, how Mary’s Meals helped him to stay in school, as well as perform his own music. All proceeds from ticket sales will go to support the work of Mary’s Meals.

THE SPARK: A HERO TAKES CHARGE

It’s a bird, it’s a plane, it’s… full blown super heroics on an epic scale. Mild mannered Maddy Martin is a brilliant electrical engineer who’s desperate to prove herself when a freak accident gives her the incredible power of static electricity. Before long, Maddy becomes The Spark, a superhero who must stop the return of the evil Dr. Crime before he destroys the City. Maddy must also unravel the mystery of her past and gender dynamics in the workplace while earning a place as the protector of Metro City. The Spark is a hilarious and action-packed thrill ride through a world of superheros, villains and ridiculous characters. Please note, this show contains some violence and graphic language.

PINKALICIOUS THE MUSICAL Friday, Sept. 29, 2017 |6:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 30, 2017 | 2:30 p.m. & 6:30 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 1, 2017 | Noon Based on the popular book written by Victoria and Elizabeth Kann, this story follows Pinkalicious, a young girl who can’t stop eating pink cupcakes despite warnings from her parents. Her pink indulgence lands her at the doctor’s office with “Pinkititis”, an affliction that turns her pink from head to toe; this is a dream come true for this pink-loving enthusiast. But when her hue goes too far, only Pinkalicious can figure out a way to get out of this pink predicament.

GERRY MADIGAN

Saturday, Oct. 7, 2017 | 7:30 p.m. Singer/songwriter and multiinstrumentalist, Gerry Madigan is a seasoned professional with an impressive musical pedigree. Originally from Dublin, Ireland, Madigan enjoyed 15 successful years on the road with his country band, The Cotton Mill Boys. Madigan will perform songs from his new CD, Wild Bird, Fly Free, with his full 10-piece band that features a funky brass section, keyboards, drums, bass, mandolin, fiddle, electric/acoustic guitar, 5-string banjo and a female vocalist. Madigan’s talents as a vocalist and multi-instrumentalist, plus his natural Irish wit, makes this a dynamic show not to be missed. Learn more at mmimusic.ca.


MENOPAUSE THE MUSICAL

Sunday, Oct. 15, 2017 | 7 p.m.

This brilliant off-broadway musical is set in a department store where four women meet by chance while shopping for a black lace bra. These women form a sisterhood as they rejoice in celebrating that menopause is no longer the silent passage anymore! Inspired by a hot flash and a bottle of wine, Menopause the Musical® was created as a celebration of women who find themselves at any stage of “the change”. This laugh-outloud, 90-minute production gets audiences out of their seats and singing along to brilliant parodies from 25 classic hit songs from the ‘60s, ‘70s and ‘80s. Admission

HALLOWEEN HOWL WITH THE R.J. HAWKEY ELEMENTARY SCHOOL CHILDREN'S CHOIR Tuesday, Oct. 17, 2017 | 7 p.m. JUNO award winner Norman Foote and the fully costumed R.J. Hawkey elementary school choir bring music, laughter and the creative spirit of Halloween together.

This is an evening where the ghosts, goblins and gremlins can celebrate this ghoulish time of year in costume! Foote’s musicality is like no other, mixing clever hooks, witty wordplay and comedy all together. His accolades include SOCAN’s Best Songwriter Award, US Parents’ Choice Awards, National Publications Parenting Awards’ Gold Award, and most recently, a JUNO for his CD Love My New Shirt. Foote has written and recorded songs for Disney Records, Shari Lewis, CBC, the Max and Ruby musical and many others.

Design your own Halloween creature from Admission scratch and showcase it at the Bert Church $45 LIVE Theatre’s Musical Masquerade Halloween Howl! Children will develop their own Halloween creature, understand the process of creating a backstory, determine where their creature came from, and how they would’ve grown up in their environment. PORT CITIES

Friday, Oct. 20, 2017 | 7:30 p.m. The spellbinding chemistry of the trio — Carleton Stone, Breagh Mackinnon, and Dylan Guthro — that makes up Port Cities is built on masterful songwriting, skillfully crafted arrangements and powerful electricity between the three voices. Coupled with their engaging camaraderie onstage and off, Port Cities has become a not-to-be-missed live experience. Each of the three songwriters brings distinct strengths to Port Cities, creating songs reminiscent of Fleetwood Mac and Crosby, Stills & Nash. The band has collaborated with the likes of JUNO award-winning duo Classified and David Myles, Hawksley Workman, Tegan and Sara, Serena Ryder, Howie Beck, Feist, Hayden and acclaimed singersongwriter Broken Social Scene alum Jason Collette.


FUBUKI DAIKO JAPANESE DRUMMING Tuesday, Oct. 24, 2017 | 7:30 p.m.

Fubuki Daiko’s repertoire includes many original compositions and hard driving percussive pieces, alternating with gentle bamboo flute melodies. The core members, Hiroshi Koshiyama, Naomi Guilbert, and Bruce Robertson, each have over 25 years of Taiko (Japanese drumming) experience. After performing at Carnegie Hall with the San Francisco Taiko Dojo, the group relocated to Manitoba where they expanded into the current ensemble. Koshiyama is the only Canadian formally trained by world renowned lion dancer Nosuke Akiyama in the art of the Japanese Lion Dance. Koshiyama appeared in Philip Kaufman’s feature film Rising Sun and performed on the film’s soundtrack. Fubuki Daiko’s self-titled CD received a Prairie Music Award for Outstanding Instrumental Recording.

DOUBLE-DOUBLE DUO Thursday, Nov. 2, 2017 | 7:30 p.m.

In this dynamic and technologically advanced show, Double-Double Duo uniquely fuses classical showpieces, rock, pop, jazz and world music. Performers Kornel Wolak (clarinet) and Michael Bridge (digital and acoustic accordions), pack their show with talent, humour and musical expertise. Canadian Digital Accordion Champion Michael Bridge has performed on three continents, soloed with the Boston Pops, and won the prestigious Calgary Stampede Talent Search. Together, DoubleDouble Duo’s music is fun, fiery, sweet and seductive, as they push the boundaries of concert music to the next level.


MEGAN LANE

Friday, Nov. 3, 2017| 7:30 p.m. Megan Lane is known as one of Canada’s best female guitarists. The riff-rock/blues-inspired hooks that mark her music (most recently Sounding the Animal, produced by Hawksley Workman) lay the groundwork for her brilliant performances. Lane’s teen years were spent jamming with American blues musicians who toured through her hometown of Saskatoon. With over a decade of crisscrossing the continent’s music scene, her vast musical talents are apparent in her ease of on-stage experimentation with her rock trio’s danceable beats. Admission

THIS IS THAT LIVE Friday, Nov. 17, 2017| 7:30 p.m.

Pat Kelly and Peter Oldring offer audiences an intimate look behind the studio door of CBC’s award winning satirical radio show, This Is That. With a healthy mix of character interviews and “mockumentary” stories, this live send-up of public radio doesn’t just report the news, it makes it up! Nothing is off limits — politics, business, culture, justice, science — if it’s relevant to Canadians, This Is That finds a way to fabricate a story. If you have ever been curious to learn how two people provide all the voices for this improvised radio comedy, this is the show for you.


THE PAPERBOYS

Saturday, Nov. 18, 2017| 7:30 p.m. Wrapping up their 20th anniversary year, Canadian musician Tom Landa is looking back on the legacy of his much-loved folk/rock band, The Paperboys. For two decades, The Paperboys has been touring the world and lighting up stages with their free-wheeling blend of influences from Celtic and bluegrass, to Mexican son jarocho, brass bands, and Canadian roots. They’ve been called everything from Cajun slamgrass to worldbeat. The group received a JUNO Award plus two JUNO nominations, released nine albums, and regularly play two-night bills in the Pacific Northwest.

CHRISTMAS PAGEANT EVER Saturday, Nov. 25, 2017| 7:30 p.m. Seniors (65+) and children (12 and under) – $25

Creating the Best Little Newfoundland Christmas Pageant Ever is seemingly a dull task for Mrs. O’Brien, who has been put in charge when the original leader, Mrs. Armstrong, hits a moose with her car. It’s always the same old Mary and Joseph, with the same old Christmas carols, until the Herdmans show up for the auditions! The Herdmans are “the worst kids in the history of the entire world” who don’t know anything about Christmas and only show up because they heard there were free refreshments. However, what has the potential to be the worst pageant ever turns out to be the best, as everyone discovers the true meaning of Christmas.


GEORGE CANYON CHRISTMAS SHOW

Canada’s country superstar George Canyon brings his sensational vocals and charming humour to the stage with songs and personal stories of his favourite holiday season, Christmas. With favourites such as the theme song from the movie Christmas Miracle, and The Ballad of Wild Bill from the hit holiday Hallmark Television movie One Starry Christmas to a variety of Canyon’s popular hits, this show is sure to put you into the Christmas spirit. Sons of Maxwell (S.O.M.) is celebrating the Christmas season in Airdrie with a collection of songs new and old from their instanthit Christmas CD, S.O.M. Favourites and their newest Christmas CD, Christmas Super Deluxe. Come in from the cold and get into the spirit of the season with Sons of Maxwell as they spread holiday cheer! Sons of Maxwell’s energetic performances are highlighted by a great sense of humour, their signature harmonies and original pop/folk songs. They have been nominated for five East Coast Music Awards (ECMA) and have won two ECMAs (one in 2006 with Sunday Morning for Country Album of the year, and in 2002 with Among the Living for Roots Traditional Group of the year).

This two-act musical will feature highlights from the Tony Award Winning musical You’re A Good Man Charlie Brown, as well as bring the classic animated television special A Charlie Brown Christmas, to life. 2018 Presentations LISA LOEB

Monday, Jan. 15, 2018 | 7:30 p.m. With a career that spans two decades, Grammy®-nominated pop icon Lisa Loeb, topped the charts in the mid-90s with a run of Billboard hits. Her song Stay (I Missed You) from the film Reality Bites, reached #1 in 1994 and a year later, Do You Sleep, was counted in the Top 20. In 1996, I Do reached #17. Loeb has continued to record and tour, as well as work in film and TV. Her successful television projects include Dweezil & Lisa, a Admission 2004 Food Network series filmed with her $35 then-partner Dweezil Zappa, and a follow-up show called Number One Single.

BRENT BUTT

Friday, Jan. 19, 2018 | 7:30 p.m. One of Canada’s bright stars is returning to the Bert Church LIVE Theatre stage! Brent Butt discovered early that being funny was a good way to get attention. Well known for creating his own TV series, Corner Gas, Butt became an instant hit. Corner Gas received unprecedented ratings and numerous accolades including an International Emmy Award nomination, and was named Funniest Show on TV by TV Guide readers. Canada’s favourite comedy is now aired in over 26 countries. In 2013, Butt was honoured with a Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal for his contributions to community and country.


JEFFERY STRAKER

Thursday, Jan. 25, 2018 | 7:30 p.m. On his new album, Dirt Road Confessional, Jeffery Straker continues to push the boundaries of what it means to be a piano balladeer. Straker’s 12-song collection encapsulates the seasoned Saskatchewan singer/ songwriter’s experiences of playing over 200 shows around the world since the release of his 2015 album, North Star Falling. The album launched at #5 on the iTunes charts in May 2017. Straker regularly draws comparisons to Harry Nilsson, Harry Chapin as well as a young Billy Joel, but on Dirt Road Confessional his personal storytelling style stands out distinctly as his own.

Create your own pirate hat before the show | 12:30 p.m. The Purple Pirate includes storytelling and magic all in one show! Using lighting, sound and special effects, the Purple Pirate transports the audience onto his magical pirate ship where extraordinary things occur. Pirate mythology and storytelling provide the backdrop to explore the treasures of friendship and sharing. Adventure awaits the audience who get to be part of the pirate crew as the Purple Pirate steers his ship in the direction of fun and laughter. The Silver Screen Scoundrels put on an entertaining multimedia show that combines music, silent films and comedy. This show features topnotch songwriting, world class musicianship and witty antidotes that have thrilled audiences world-wide.

Songs & Stories is an intimate reimagining of 54-40’s greatest hits performed as you’ve never heard them before. Featuring original arrangements of violin, guitar, banjo and mandolin, this performance gives new context and spirit to classic songs 54-40 fans all know and love. HANK WILLIAMS LIVE – 1952 Starring Joe Matheson

Wednesday, Feb. 21, 2018 | 7:30 p.m. 1952 seemed like the beginning of the end for Hank Williams. His marriage ended, his contract with the Grand Ole Opry was terminated, his health was in serious decline, and even his old friend and mentor Fred Rose said he couldn’t put up with Hank’s shenanigans any longer. Then, suddenly, the tide appeared to turn. Hank was riding high again, back in the studio and planning a tour. History, of course, proved Hank to be a little too optimistic for his own good. But what caused the turn around? Where did Hank get this amazing second wind only months before his death? In this intimate and revealing musical theatre performance, Joe Matheson (the quintessential voice of Hank Williams) pays tribute to the King of Country Music. It’s not a true story, but the stories are true. And, if it ain’t exactly factual, well, as Hank would say, “What Momma don’t know won’t hurt’er!”

DUFFLEBAG THEATRE PRESENTS CINDERELLA Sunday, Feb. 25, 2018 | 2 p.m.

Since 1992, DuffleBag Theatre has been celebrated at festivals and schools. Actors retell the original adaptations of select fairytales and Shakespearean classics with humour and twists. Before your eyes, audience members join in on the action. This unpredictable performance is a hilarious experience for all ages where the dream of living a fairy tale really does come true!


RAINBOW DANCE PARTY – SELFIE Friday, March 2, 2018 | 7:30 p.m.

An evening of non-stop surprises and Admission stunning beauty awaits you. Through virtuosic $36 dancing and the wizardry of motion-tracking technology, audiences are swept into an otherworldly, artistic wonderland. The audience becomes a part of the show as Selfie delves into the mystery of the “self”, encouraging the audience to text their own selfie to the stage. The high-powered, breathtaking physicality of the RDT dance ensemble brings together passion and humor, along with virtuosic dancing, gravity-defying partnering and sheer beauty of execution in this magnificent performance.

ANASTASIA, PERFORMED BY CANADA’S BALLET JORGEN Thursday, March 8, 2018 | 7:30 p.m.

Canada’s Ballet Jörgen brings back the magical tale of the Russian Grand Duchess Anastasia for the 100th anniversary of the story. Created by acclaimed choreographer and Artistic Director Bengt Jörgen, Anastasia is set to an original full orchestra score by Russian/Canadian composer Ivan Barbotin. Anastasia, the tragic story of an innocent girl and the subject of modern mythology, explores the emotions, aspirations and affections of this lovable yet controversial character. Canada’s Ballet Jörgen, renowned for its ability to succinctly tell classical stories in an engaging and dramatic fashion, presents this full-length ballet that is rich with detailed costumes, versatile sets and exquisite lighting.

The Olate Dogs are the winning participants from season seven of America’s Got Talent. Led by Richard Olate and his son Nicholas, the Olate Dogs are a high-energy, fastpaced canine theatrical act filled with amazing dog tricks, human acrobatics and humor. The Olate Dogs can also be seen nationwide amazing people of all ages and sharing their story of the American dream and dog rescue. Admission

Back by popular demand! This will be a foot-stomping, toe-tapping afternoon full of good old-time fiddle music. The Prairie Mountain Fiddlers play for the people and for their love of the music. It is all about good old fashioned fun!


JOHN MCDERMOTT Sunday, April 29, 2018 | 2 p.m.

John McDermott is an international recording star and household name – known as much for his successful musical career as for his commitment to veterans’ causes. In concert, McDermott never fails to enchant audiences with his beautiful voice and tasteful remembrance tributes. Though time and travel have introduced McDermott to a wealth of new material and experiences, he manages to incorporate that diversity into his performances while retaining the charming sense of humour that audiences have cherished from the beginning.

INFINITUS

Thursday, May 17, 2018 | 7:30 p.m. Infinitus is a critically acclaimed beatboxing string trio known for their unique sound and upbeat performance style. With a repertoire featuring classical standards and original jazz/hip-hop arrangements and compositions, Infinitus is quickly becoming one of North America’s premiere chamber groups.

Dahl’s endearing tale tells the story of a lonesome orphan boy who finally finds a place to grow — a place of friendship, hope and magic! James and the Giant Peach (Wood) is presented by special arrangement with Samuel French, Inc.

MADE FOR THE STAGE Made for the Stage incorporates all aspects of theatre training including acting, drama techniques, skill development, monologue and audition preparation, technical skills such as lighting and sound design, makeup artistry and costume and prop and set design. If being part of the technical crew interests you more than being in front of the audience, there is still a place for you at BCT! Sound designers will develop the music and sound effects, lighting designers will develop the “look”, makeup artists will transform the actors, costume designers will develop the character’s look, and finally, prop and set design will develop the stage for the story.

ACT 2: (suggested ages 11–16) $205

Wednesdays | 6:30 – 8:30 p.m. Sept. 6 – Nov. 8, 2017 Nov. 15, 2017 – Jan. 31, 2018 Feb. 10 – April 12, 2018 This class will encourage and challenge developing young actors. Participants will have mock auditions wherein they’ll receive feedback to develop their skills. They’ll get a part in a play written or picked especially for them. Interested in the technical side of theatre? Makeup, costume or prop design? Stage management or even directing? The Amateurs is a safe program to learn more and develop these skills in a practical way. Due to its nature, Amateurs can only take on one “assistant director” and one “stage manager” per semester and will take serious requests at a first come, first served basis. This program is ideal for actors who have had at least two years’ experience. Dates subject to change.

ACT 3: BUILD YOUR OWN PLAY Dates and times to be determined

During the spring session, participants will really be challenged! You’ll create your own character and learn how your character can interact with others within the confines of a genre of the class’ choosing. Explore different kinds of characters, including mask and puppetry. We will also build the props and the set together! Dates subject to change.

YOGA & PAINTING WORKSHOP Saturday, Sept. 16, 2017 | 9 a.m. – 1 p.m. In this combination yoga and painting class, you will be led through a rejuvenating yoga session followed by a freestyle painting exercise to transform your spontaneous creative juices into inspired beautiful paintings. This is not a technical painting lesson, but rather a chance to harness the artistic and spiritual energy that comes from practicing yoga. No prior experience necessary. Learn how to design your very own creature. In this course, you will learn how to develop a creature, the process of creating a backstory, critically think about where your monster is from and how they would’ve grown up in their environment. THE SECRET LIFE OF COSTUME DESIGN

Get a glimpse of what it’s like to study costume and fashion design. In this class, you will learn the design process starting from research and trend forecasting to initial designs, assessing show needs, balancing the collection and creating a full five looks for a show. What better way to adorn yourself than with your very own mermaid crown! Join BCT’s fashion guru, Lindsey, to make your sea goddess fantasy a reality. Shells, glue and glitter are included with your ticket, but bring along any old, unwanted or broken jewelry to customize your creation.
