At Freddy Frapples Kostis Stavrakis keeps it all fresh.
A COUPLE of shops down is family owned greengrocer Freddy Frapples, one of the oldest and best known stores in Cooleman Court, and in Canberra. Brothers Minas and Michael Stavrakis opened the shop in the 1980s, and now run it along with Michael’s sons Kostis, Thanasis and Nick. They are often found moving busily around the shop, pointing out good deals, cutting fruit and saying hello to their many, many regulars. “Weston Creek a much closer community than others,” says Michael. “You get to know the people and they grow up, they have their own family, they have kids, and we’re still here!”
With almost 30 years in the game, Freddy Frapples has the contacts to get the highest quality fruit and vegetables at amazing prices. “It comes from all over NSW,” Michael says. “You have to try very hard to get cherries from the best farms in Young – that’s where we get them at the moment – and everyone sells cherries for $20 a kilo. We’re selling them for $10.” Freddy Frapples is a lot more than just a “fruit and veg” shop. It also stocks specialty deli products and imported foods such as dips, smoked products, pickles and condiments, organic health foods and an extensive gluten-free range.
