he huge subline pipes were laid by BWSSB in the year 2003 between Koramanagala Regional Passport Office to Agara Pump House (Jakkasandra) via 80 feet road and first Main Road 1'st Block Koramangala. However, the line between Sony Signal intersection to Wipro Park Signal junction has turned malfunction. This has resulted in clogging of primary UGD lines creating back flow and accumulation of sewage in road side drains. The sewage is allowed to flow into SWD directly. Some of the establishments of 80 feet road are forced to let their sewage directly into SWD also. This subline is supposed to serve all the blocks of Koramangala from 8th block to first block and also other areas like ST Bed. To overcome the problem of faulty sublime BWSSB has relaid UGD lines of Koramangala 4th block connecting it to downstream Wipro Park junction. Whereas other dwellers of 80 feet road, especially who are on ST Bed side are left with no recourse. Residents on several occasions have brought this

Mr B S Ananthram (Civic Activist) took this matter again in Dec 2017 by writing to chairman BWSSB and also met the then chief Engineer (Waste Water Division) and apprised him of the situation, seeking rectification of the subline. Since nothing has been done he has once again sought the intervention of Chairman BWSSB to direct Waste Water division to undertake detailed inspection and explore suitable remedial measures in the interest of public health of residents. This will also save Bellandur lake from further deterioration's. Hope authorities will take immediate actions.

RANDOM THOUGHTS GIFT OF FOOD

W

idely known, Music, Babies, &Food are the vernacular of life. Understood and appreciated across cultures, they transcend the inherent limits of language. Universally accepted as an expression of good intent, they smooth the way for a variety of social encounters. Music or food are a must in any social gathering. Of course, the presence of babies in close family unions adds color and gaiety. Their mere presence is enough, not necessarily any words, they automatically generate appealing conversations. From the earliest ancestors, who thought of bringing some wild berries back to the cave, sharing food has been an essential aspect of human interaction. Partaking in a meal together is a standard form of bonding and communicating. More or less, it has become a compulsory tradition whenever relatives or acquaintances visit each other, to offer gifts of food and other unique artifacts. Like Marco Polo returning from a quest, bringing home both stories and food to eat while telling them, seems a winning combination. More exotic the food one brings, the better. From spices to coffee to sweets and snacks, the present is a token reminder that the family was carried along in their minds and hearts on travels. Loved ones were missed and thought of while the voyager was away. Now one is home and all are together again. Time to appreciate and celebrate their safe return. Much to share always, when returning from an expedition. - Chandrasekhara, resident of 3rd Block, Koramangala

Amritha excels in Nadasurabhi Silver Jubilee Concert

Parenting: Raising successful children NAGAVEENA M

O HARINI RAGHAVAN

T

he vocal concert of Vidushi Amritha Murali on Sunday, 17th July, for Nadasurabhi – a special concert during their silver jubilee year – was like “Amrutha Paanam”. The characteristic feature of her concert was perfect alignment with sruthi, clarity in both raga rendering and sahitya, high level of energy from the beginning, which lasted till the end without any sagging! She started with a benedictory slokam in Mayamalavagowla sliding over to the Kambodhi Pada varnam of Maha Vaidyanatha Sivan – a rarely heard piece. A brief sketch of Raga Huseni was apt for Rama Ninnenammi for which there was a fire works of swara prasthara. She exhibited her high grip on the raga with brilliant landing on ‘Rishaba’ with different swara combinations. The elaboration of raga Begada, with special usages typical to the raga were brought out neatly. Thyagarajaya Namaste of Muthuswamy Dikshitar followed, with swaras at Pallavi. Vihara manasa rame, a composition of Maharaja Swathi Tirunal in Kapi came in as a welcome change from the usual kritis in the raga. Kapi raga had its original flavour, bringing the finer aspects without any blemishes. The song also had a mature neraval at

Karuna rasa nilaye and swara prasthara in good proportion. Shamasastri’s Mayamma in Ahiri went off well with a good tempo. A quick Purandaradasa kriti, Venkataramanane Baro was followed by RTP in Thodi. The rich, heavy sancharas and sangathis in Thodi were brought out neatly and an equally poised Tanam followed for a simple Pallavi set to Misra Jhampa talam in 2 Kalais. Ragamalika swarams in Malayamarutham, Kamach and Amrithavarshini both in viloma and anuloma were highly impressive. To this list she added Hari chitt satya in Jonpuri, Sagara shayana Vibho in Bhagesri with a slokam ‘Kasturi tilakam’ preceding it. With the popular thillana Niri niri gamagarisa the concert was concluded. There was a good mix of popular rags with some rarely heard popular compositions, and fast moving tukdas. Her voice was matured and cultured and presentation was sedate. The accompanying artists were no less in their contribution. H.M. Smitha on Violin with a perfect following also played the individual pieces extremely well, for which she received a big round of applause. B.C. Manjunath on Mridangam and S.N. Narayana Murthy on Ghatam played with understanding and with their deft hands produced beautiful rhythmic patterns during the tani avartanam.

ne of the most important, difficult and challenging task faced by parents of this age is children’s upbringing. Reinforcing a positive behaviour starts right from the child’s birth and not from the time he starts going to school. The first and foremost aspect of this journey is to teach the child to self regulate himself which intern helps him to control anger and fear. This is associated with the parenting practices. Parents need to be sensitive, responsive and available to the child so that he can become responsible, respectful and a resourceful member of the society. Upbringing starts from birth. The child can feel the touch of the mother and responds to it. Each and every behaviour of the parents will be observed by children. In fact, they learn more by looking at how parents behave rather than what they preach. Parents need to build a strong relationship with their children from the beginning. The most important factor which determines success is self esteem. When children grow up feeling good about themselves and if they are made to realize, they are worthwhile people and if they enjoy warm and satisfying relationship with their parents and peers, definitely they are bound to do well in life. The sequence of development is the same in all children, what varies from child to child is the rate of development. At every moment, the child should be considered as an individual human being who is striving to meet his own needs. The parents should understand and be aware of the true significance of the child’s behavior. It is essential to know when the child needs your help desperately. The lack of understanding will only increase the desperation. Every child needs to feel capable of dealing with challenges and parent should take out time to encourage investigative behavior of children. This behavior is ultimately responsible for learning and reasoning abilities. While raising confident children the most important aspect is to acknowledge the accomplishments. It has its early foundation in parents affirmation of worth and in

mastery of early developmental tasks. In the process of raising happy kids parents often feel giving many tasks might burden them. The best way to make the child happy is to set the goal, make the child realize the importance of the goal and help the child in achieving it. The sense of accomplishment gives the child true happiness to the child and also motivates the child to take up further goals. It is very essential to teach them to be generous, which they learn by looking at their parents. It is ok to let go things, it is ok to share the toys and chocolates. Respect for elders and teachers is the foremost thing to develop empathy among them. Whatsoever the pressure in the workplace or family may be, the parents should respond warmly to their children. Whenever children talk to parents, they must listen to them with full attention. This sense of belongingness definitely boots the confidence of the children. This will also help them to manage their emotions in a better way. Parents have to be clear about their own values. Children watch them closely. This helps them to develop good relationships and values. A child without values develops into a clueless adult. The best way to raise morally strong child is to be the one. Parents need to be consistent in their behavior. It is a major blunder to behave good when one is happy and not when the situations are not in favor. When a child is unable to find uniform value patterns, confusion sets in and the unlimited energies of the childhood remain unutilized. Uniform behaviour patterns leads to development of competencies and a confident. In the process of making them the best, never build unhealthy competition in the child’s mind. They should stay away from jealousy. Encourage them to focus on self growth and not to have unnecessary comparison. This helps to reduce frustration and feeling of helplessness in the child. Help them to verbalize their concerns. The most important aspect while raising successful children is the spend available quality time with them. This reduces frustration and allow the child to unwind and think positively.

Scott's Bungalow on the banks of River Cauvery

1

799 after the 4th Mysore War and the Seige of Srirangapatna - the war between the British colonial forces and Tipu Sultan saw the death and end of Tipu's rule! Srirangapatna was handed over, back to the original rulers, the Wodeyar Kings. Srirangapatna became a Garrison Town of the British. The British forces were led by young Capt. Scott. He was the Commandant of the area and ruled the roost from the 'French Rocks' - the strategic hillock at Srirangapatna. He trained the local villagers at Ganjam in the art of guncraft and it's manufacturing process! Dr. Buchanan in 1800 and Lord Velentia in 1803 applauded his teaching of gun making skills taught to the locals. The Wodeyar King was friendly and impressed by him, The Wodeyar king built a huge beautiful bungalow on the banks of river Cauvery at Srirangapatna to Capt. Scott. He was promoted to a Colonel in the British Colonial Forces. Tragedy stuck Col. Scott's family. He lost his wife at child birth and two of his daughter's to Cholera! Devastated he disappeared from Srirangapatna on 19th April 1817. Stories were circulated that he rode his horse carriage into the raging Cauvery drowning himself. It's a fact that during the summer months of April the Cauvery is at it's lowest ebb! It's recorded that Col. Scott was devastated by his family's loss and reported to Madras, the headquarters of British colonial

His deceased wife and still born child's grave can be found in the Garrison Cemetery at Srirangapatna. His two daughter's whereabouts or their graves are not found at all! The Wodeyar Kings kept the Scotts bungalow in tact, the way he left it hoping he would come back one day. The bungalow had a beautiful huge inlaid ivory cot which was moved away to the palace. In 1962, Yvette Zerfas an Australian English lady, wife of Dr. Freddie Zerfas who was working at the Holdsworth Memorial Mission Hospital Mysore bought this bungalow and still lives in it leading a private life. Scott's Bungalow... 6 By memories of the past.

It has stood, as though under a curse or spell, Untouched since the year that Tippoo fell. The garden about it is tangled and wild, Sad trees sigh close to its eaves, And the dark lithe shapes Of chattering apes Swing in and out of the leaves; And when night’s dank vapours rise grey and foul, The silence is rent by the shrill screechowl. The windows are shuttered, the doors are shut, And the odour and stain of decay Is on plaster and beam, And the stone steps seem To be ooze-corroding away; And the air all around is as tinged with the breath Of the felt, though invisible, presence of Death. Twas a pleasant abode, no doubt, in its prime; Two storeyed, facing the tide ; A verandah deep, And a broad stone sweep Of steps to the riverside, And a boat-house, close to the water’s edge, Flanking the stairs, on a rocky ledge. The stream flows by in a low-banked curve, And higher up, to the right, Are the battlements grey That could not stay The rush of old England’s might; And, higher up still, the world-famed breach A lesson we to posterity teach. Stirring the times were those times, forsooth, And bold the hearts of our men, Who plunged through water, And rocks and slaughter, And carried the tiger’s den. Heroic the onset and crushing the blow That was struck near this lonely bungalow. When the siege was over a Colonel dwelt With his wife and daughters here, In command of the fort Where the bloody sport Had cost Mysore so dear. I can fancy the girls with their prattle light, And the house all trim, and the garden bright; And the merry party afoot on the steps, Looking across the stream, Or swinging afloat In their pleasure boat, Under the soft moonbeam, With the cool breeze over the water blowing,

Making amends for the midday glowing. I think I can see in the early morn The horses held at the door, And the girls riding out With the Colonel stout To visit the breach once more, Or gaze at the gate where Tippoo fell, Stabbed to death in the fierce pell-mell. And then the breakfast after the ride, Under the shadowy trees, Mamma in her chair, And the homely fare, And the Colonel at his ease, Conning the sheets of the night-brought post, Between attacks on the tea and toast. And, after, the long yet happy day In the cuscus-tattied gloom, The cheery tiffin, And giggling griffin ‘Sconced in the drawing-room ; And the voice of the grand piano, half Hushing the man’s and maiden’s laugh. And hushed they were ; for one dreadful eve The Cholera tapped at the door; Nor knocked in vain, For mother and twain Answered the summons sore. When dawn broke over the house next day, The mother and daughters had passed away. The Colonel buried his loved ones three, Then fled from the house of woe. And ne’er since then Have the feet of men Trod in that bungalow, Save feet of the traveller, passing near, Who turns to see it, and drops a tear. The mouldering rooms are now as they stood Near eighty years ago : The piano is there, And table and chair, And the carpet, rotting slow, And the beds whereon the corpses lay, And the curtains half time-mawed away. A type of gloom and decay and death, And happiness overcast, Is this bungalow lonely, And tenanted only By memories of the past. Peace to the shades of the three who died In that lonely house by the Cauvery’s tide ! Lays of Ind by Aliph Cheem, 1875. One simple request, this is not a public tourist spot. I humbly request people not to bother the 90 + years living private resident, Yvette! She doesn't entertain or meets visitors. You will be shooed away! I stumbled upon this piece of history on my travels and wanted to share it.

Hierarchical Deterministic Wallet Manjunatha K Cryptocurrency security expert, Koinlocker

W

e are making a major leap in the technology, unfortunately at the same time thieves/hackers are also advancing in much faster pace. It is essential to have foolproof mechanism to protect the interest and assets of individual securly. We know that the storing a cryptocurrency/ Bitcoin securely is a major challenge, also we have seen the various mechanisms to store cryptocurrency. Private key is the is most critical component in the cryptocurrency. Hackers are always interested in stealing private key so that they can take away bitcoins; It is learnt that the hardware wallet is found to be the most secure way of storing bitcoins. Let us dive down and see how does the Hardware wallet achieves this. Hardware wallet is also called as HD wallet (Hierarchical Deterministic wallet). The name comes from the way the private and the public keys are generated. HD wallet follows the standards defined by Bitcoin Improvement Proposals BIP-32, BIP-39, and BIP-44. Hardware wallet is like a computer that generates the private keys from the seed words (seed words are 12/24 words that are randomly picked by the device from the dictionary defined by the BIP-39). It also generates the public keys, receiving address and return address for each

You can read

user account. Public key is generated using the elliptic curve cryptography algorithm over the private key. HD wallets support multiple accounts for the same coin. For each coin, it generates a XPUB using the public key. These xpubs can be used to query blockchain for the account details. Using xpub, receiving address and the return address will be generated for each of the account. When user needs to receive any fund/coin from others, they need to share this receiving address of the given account. Private key never leaves the hardware wallet. Apart from storing the private key securely, it also does transaction signing using the private key so that the blockchain can honor the transaction. Most of the hardware wallets are protected by the 6-9 digit pin. Without entering the pin, device will not allow any interface to work. While setting up the hardware wallet for the first time, it asks the user to note down the seed words in the order it has been used to generate the private key. User needs to note and preserve these seed words in a safe locker. HD wallet also provides a recovery mechanism. If user loses his Hardware wallet device, he can purchase a new device and recover his wallet using the seed words. . The hardware wallet is protected by pin and multiple attempts of wrong pin entries lead to device wipe out.
