Welcome to the 2015 Fall Program Season! MAYOR’S MESSAGE Fort Saskatchewan will soon be adorned with golden yellow leaves and many residents including myself, will enjoy it just as much as the summer breeze. Summer may be on the way out but there are still so many exciting events and activities to keep everyone active and entertained in this beautiful season and wonderful community. The first sign of fall is the Sheep Leaving Parade that takes place each Labour Day Monday. Be sure to bring some apples or carrots and bid a fond farewell to the sheep until next spring. Whether you are new to the Fort or a long term resident, come and learn about all the community groups at Neighbour Day on September 12 at the Dow Centennial Centre. The following Saturday, September 19, everyone will be heading to the Downtown Fall Festival. During the festival or anytime, visit the new NWMP Fort Exhibit (Stables Building) to learn how the NWMP helped build our community back in 1875. If you love music or theatre, check out the new season at the Shell Theatre too. If you want to keep yourself physically fit while having fun, check out this Leisure Guide for many programs and drop-in classes that should keep you in great shape. Register for an active, healthy and fun-filled fall season now! Gale Katchur

Principles of compassion, understanding and forgiveness guide us. We help all people involved in a conflict or crime be accountable to repair the harm caused by maintaining and building relationships, ensuring a safer community for all. We use a proven process to help everyone involved in a conflict or minor crime move forward and become responsible members of the community. Restorative Practice works with youth and adults in the community to help educate and create understanding between those involved in conflict or crime. It is an ideal process for parent/teen conflict, school bullying, neighbourhood disputes and people involved in minor crimes. www.restorefortsask.ca

In dentistry, sedation can be administered in a number of ways including inhalation, orally or via an intravenous line. Each administrative route has advantages and disadvantages and should be discussed with your dental provider to determine which modality may be appropriate for you.

One of the more popular types of sedation in dentistry is the use of nitrous oxide, more commonly known as “laughing gas”.This colourless, odourless gas is administered via a breathing mask that is placed on a patient’s nose prior the start of treatment. Nitrous gas is effective in reducing the feeling of pain as well reducing anxiety and can help turn an uncooperative patient into one that is able to get dental treatment done including children. The advantages of nitrous oxide include its rapid onset, good pain and anxiety reducer, the ability to adjust the level of gas to a patient’s needs, no residual effects (patients can drive home after 5-10 minutes of breathing room air) and a high level of safety. Nitrous gas also has some disadvantages. These may include a patient’s inability to breath through their nose, feeling claustrophobic with a mask on one’s face or not achieving an adequate level of relaxation within a safe level of administration. Nitrous gas is also not a suitable option for patients with lung problems such as emphysema or women who are pregnant in the first trimester.
