GROUNDS & HOUNDS Never one to shy away from a delicious libation, Grounds & Hounds founder, Jordan Karcher, has come up with his two favorite coffee-infused cocktails: Old Fashioned Love Story and The Heartbreaker.

Each of these recipes gets a bonus jolt of caffeinated goodness from Grounds & Hounds coffee to keep you rockin’ and rollin’ all night long. What’s even better, is that Grounds & Hounds donates 20% of profits to local animal rescue organizations—so all of the pups can feel the love! For more information, check out our Doggone Holiday Gift Guide starting on page 24, or visit groundsandhoundscoffee.com

OLD FASHIONED LOVE STORY

1 ½ oz. Sit & Stay Cold Brew (room temp)

1 ounce of bourbon

¼ ounce simple syrup

Dash of Peychaud’s bitters

1” lemon peel

Instructions

To start, fill your cocktail shaker with ice. Next, add in above ingredients to the shaker with exception of the lemon peel garnish. Before you shake, add your preferred amount of ice to a rocks glass and set aside. Shake well for fifteen seconds before straining the mixture into your ice-filled rocks glass. Lastly, pinch the lemon peel garnish against the rim of the glass and twist over your cocktail. If you’re not a fan of lemon, no problem, you can use an orange slice or a maraschino cherry as a garnish. Next, snuggle up with your pup for a night of cocktails and rom coms.

THE HEARTBREAKER

1 ½ oz. Alpha Blend (strong brewed)

½ cup crushed ice

1 ounce of Tito’s vodka

1 teaspoon of simple syrup

1 ounce of heavy cream

Instructions

First, add a handful of ice to your cocktail glass. Next, gently pour in one ounce of your preferred vodka (we recommend Tito’s Handmade Vodka.

Once poured, add in one teaspoon of sugar cane syrup before adding a splash of heavy cream. To finish it off, add in the star of the drink, the espresso. Some prefer to let the heavy cream float while others like to stir the ingredients together, it’s up to you. All that’s left to do now is sit back and relax with your four-legged, furry Valentine.

A DOG’S DEVOTION

A Dog’s Devotion is an inside view of a remarkable K9 search and rescue team operating in the wilds of Washington State whose “principal investigator” is a yellow Lab named Keb. Readers will follow this intrepid canine and her teammates as they face the challenges of changeable weather, deep Northwest forests, and high mountain terrain to find dead bodies, missing hikers, and even the bones of murder victims from long ago. Among their successes: finding multiple victims buried by the 2014 Oso landslide.

CITYDOG SCOOP THINGS TO CHEW ON 8 • CityDog Magazine

+DODGER CHEF SHOTA

When I received the pitch to interview Seattle chef and restaurateur Shota Nakajima, I was beyond thrilled. Shota is a three-time James Beard semi-finalist, has just reopened his anticipated Capitol Hill restaurant Taku—a Japanese fried chicken concept—and competed on season 18 of Top Chef on Bravo. Needless to say, I’m a huge fan!

But, according to Shota, the real star is his border collie Dodger!

Shota adopted Dodger in 2020 when Dodger was a year and a half and they have been inseparable ever since. He takes him everywhere including foraging excursions for wild mushrooms in the mountains of the Pacific Northwest, camping trips, cook-outs, and recipe taste-testing (see Shota and Dodger’s dog food recipe on the following page).

Now two years old, Dodger entered into Shota’s life sort of serendipitously. A friend of Shota told him his personality is like a border collie, so like most dog lovers, he took it as a compliment and decided to call a breeder in Washington “just to chat and ask questions.”

“Janice DeMello from Hob Nob who breeds border collies was kind enough to talk with me,” says Shota. “At the end, she asked if I was looking for a puppy and I said not really because I don’t have time. She mentioned her friend is looking for a good home for her border collie—that they have another dog and the two don’t get along. I met up with her that day and came home with a new friend named Dodger!”

If you watched Shota’s season of Top Chef—or have watched any season for that matter —then you know the competition is grueling. His season of the show was taped in nearby Portland, Oregon but even so, Dodger stayed with Shota’s mom and dad while taping.

“My mom and dad watched him while I was in Portland,” says Shota. “When I call my mom or go see her, she loves Dodger and Dodger loves her, which is the sweetest thing to watch.”

Shota continues, “It was definitely hard being away from him during filming. Getting out of the shower, or jumping into bed after a stressful day and him not being there when

UNLEASHED PEOPLE AND POOCHES OF THE PACIFIC NORTHWEST

I called his name was very weird. When I closed both my restaurants in spring 2020, I was with him 24/7. He helped me get through a lot of emotions at the time, so not having him there was tough. But, at least I had pictures and got to Zoom with him a few times!”

On episode 5, “Meet You at the Drive-In,” the chefs went headto-head at the first-ever Top Chef Drive-In, where each team was tasked with creating dishes based on popular movie genres like com edy, science fiction, drama, adventure and horror. Yes, horror!

“My challenge was to come up with drive-in food based on horror,” says Shota. “My worst nightmare is something happening to Dodger, so I went with it.” The result? Well, let’s just say it lived up to the horror genre, but not in a good way. The “cheesy, bloody corndog,” according to Top Chef judge Gail Simmons, “Will give me nightmares.”

Back home in Seattle, when he’s not at the restaurant, Shota enjoys hiking or mushroom foraging with Dodger. “He also loves it when I take him sheep herding with a trainer,” says Shota. “He’s also getting better at smelling things out on command, so I’ve been training him on truffles!”

After the show finished taping, Shota took Dodger back to Hood River, Ore. “We walked around the area where we went fishing and did the outdoor challenge,” says Shota. “I shared with him behindthe-scenes stories, but he didn’t seem all that interested.”

As a chef and owner of Capitol Hill restaurant Taku, of course Shota prepares meals for Dodger. “I make him dog food with left over rice, veggies and chicken. He loves it, but he also loves to snack like me so anything makes him happy.”

Of course we had to ask Shota for a recipe to share with readers!

“In my fried chicken joint Taku we have rice left over at the end of the night that I don’t want to go to waste, so I decided to turn it into dog food,” says Shota. “My dog has long hair, so I added salmon oil to the recipe and now I barely need to brush him!”

DOG FOOD RECIPE

1/4 cup cooked rice

1/8 cup chopped spinach

1/4 cup minced carrot

1/2 cup small diced chicken

1 cup no sodium stock/water

1 tbs salmon oil

Add everything to a pot and bring to a boil. Simmer for 25 minutes at low heat, while occasionally stirring. Let cool and serve.

For more inspiring recipes from local chefs, turn to page 40.

MARQUEEN

HOTEL

The regal MarQueen Hotel has undergone a recent face lift and now two- and four-legged guests can revel in its old world charm and modern amenities.

A STORIED PAST IN SEATTLE

Built in 1918, MarQueen Hotel was originally the Seattle Engineering School, housing Henry Ford’s students. These blacksmiths developed the Model-T, the first affordable car for the middle-class, with the building be coming the largest single garage in the city. Later, the garage moved to upper Queen Anne Hill, and thus MarQueen Hotel was born. This rich history is still seen throughout the property, engineered with charming touches and nods to its unique ride to success.

HISTORIC CHARM IN THE EMERALD CITY

As you walk into MarQueen Hotel, step back into the time of speakeasies, eclectic style, and charming hospitality. Located in the heart of Seattle’s oldest neighborhood, Uptown, located at the base of Queen Anne, this prohibitionera hotel offers a place for you and your pooch to feel right at home. Apart ment-style rooms offer a vintage ambiance with a quaint dining nook, cozy sitting area, and in-room kitchenette. The pampering extends to your pup with a dog bed plus food and water bowls.

A NEIGHBORHOOD SPEAKEASY

The hotel’s Tin Lizzie Lounge is a prohibition style speakeasy, stocked with local spirits and brews and the mixologists are well versed in the liba tions of the era, hand-crafting their own delicious recipes. Pair your cocktail with light bar bites with a focus on the best locally sourced produce, spices and meats. Adjoining rooms off the bar are perfect for hosting a small soiree with friends, two- and four-legged alike.

your dog’s stay as comfortable as yours. The remodeled apartment-style rooms pay homage to the Seattle Engineering School students they once housed while providing a 1920s charm and comfortable space for all travelers. Some rooms even have a cute kitchenette, breakfast nook and sitting area.

A reservation at the MarQueen Hotel is your key to the city, with easy access to a host of things within walking distance like the Space Needle and Seattle Center plus a plethora of restaurants. And, if you need to stock up on pet food and supplies, there is a Mud Bay just down the street.

THE LODGE AT ST. EDWARD PARK A PACIFIC NORTHWEST (RE)TREAT

The Lodge at St. Edward State Park is housed in a historic landmark dating back to 1931 and surrounded by the dense and tranquil forests of Saint Edward State Park. The property has been beautifully restored to showcase its historic elegance and grandeur while incorporating just the right amount of modern comfort. The former seminary dorms have been transformed into 84 thoughtfully designed guest rooms that feature original details and décor inspired by the building’s history.

The expansive property provides far more than just a comfortable place to stay. You’ll also find Cedar + Elm, a Northwest-inspired eatery and bar that showcases the best flavors and ingredients of the region. Relax before or after your dinner at the warm and inviting Father Mulligan’s Heritage Bar, located in the lobby, or enjoy imaginative mixology at The Tonsorium—Latin for “barber shop,” which originally resided in that same location. If you need any more help unwinding, pay a visit to Vita Nova Spa and indulge in a natureinspired massage or beauty treatment.

Top: Ride in style in the Lodge’s vintage 1938 Pontiac Stretch Limousine. Above: Relax with a book or play a vintage board game in the Lodge’s Library.

With so much to do and see at the Lodge, the hardest part is deciding what to do first. We decide to take the dogs for a nature walk through the 326-acre Saint Edward Park, with its tranquil old-growth forest, miles of hiking and biking trails, and the magnificent Lake Washington coastline. A series of trails runs through the park for bicyclists (mountain bikes are available for guests, first-come, first-served), intrepid hikers and of course, dog lovers. We pick the two-mile round trip trail to the shores of Lake Washington. When we arrive at our destination—a small, undeveloped beach along the lake—we find a hand ful of other folks with their dogs, tossing balls into the water for retrieval.

DOGGONE GETAWAY
14 • CityDog Magazine SIT, STAY AND PLAY WRITTEN BY BRANDIE AHLGREN PHOTOGRAPHY BY JULIE AUSTIN

Alas, Coco is not much of a water dog, so we make our way back up the trail to the Lodge, where we reward ourselves for a hike-well-done with a glass of wine and local oysters on the half shell in Father Mulligan’s Heritage Bar before dinner.

Cedar + Elm is the centerpiece of the Lodge’s culinary offerings. Led by Executive Chef Kevin Benner, the menu is a celebration of the region with a uniquely Pacific Northwest approach, influenced by the seasons. We opt for the Anderson Ranch lamb shank with mole, truffled white grits and roasted butternut squash and Painted Hills filet mignon, with a Hassel back potato, braised greens, Béarnaise and demi glace.

Back at our room, Coco is treated to an adorable plush, toy Otter and a carob-covered pretzel cookie. There are also food and water bowls for her convenience. Each of the 84 guestrooms and suites at the Lodge was thoughtfully designed to blend the building’s original character with modern furnishings, with convenient touches sitting seamlessly alongside historical charm. With restored original windows and doors and curated wallpaper that depicts the building’s architectural drawings, they provide the perfect combination of historic elegance and contemporary comfort. All guestrooms include Nespresso Cof fee machines, Smart TVs, and desks, and a custom pillow menu and luxurious bedding will ensure a restful night’s sleep.

The next morning, we pay a visit to Vita Nova Spa and enjoy a cup of tea on the patio, where Coco is welcome. Looking over the menu, the spa offerings vary from soothing to rejuvenating,

using traditional techniques, herbal botanicals, and sustainably-sourced pure products.

We enjoy the rest of the day exploring the property and all it has to offer. We start with a self-led historical tour. With map and smart phone in hand, we venture throughout the property and find dozens of QR codes, each linking to a history lesson, photo gallery, or video that tells the story of the space you are standing in, from the Gallery of Fine Arts, which features a rotating showcase of Pacific Northwest artists, to the Bell Tower, to many more points of interest.

After our historical tour, we head outside to the Lodge’s expansive lawn to relax in the Adirondack chairs and soak up some sun, while we ponder a game of cornhole or croquet—both available for guests to use during their stay. We opt for a game of fetch with Coco instead, before our visit at the Lodge at St. Edward Park comes to an end.

FOR THE

HOME HOLIDAYS

THE WEATHER OUTSIDE MAY BE FRIGHTFUL, BUT THESE PRODUCTS FOR THE HOME WILL ENSURE YOUR SEASON IS DELIGHTFUL.

From dog beds to blankets, tasty treats to plush toys, we’ve dug up everything you need to enjoy the holidays with your family, two- and four-legged alike.

ALL DOGS NEED THEIR OWN BLANKET. Dogs find comfort in places they associ ate with the coziness of a den. They can paw, nuzzle, and rearrange a blanket to create a comfortable nest and secure sleep space.

Tall Tails (pictured above) wants to provide that comforting security to all dogs, whether at home, on-the-go, and especially those in animal shelters and foster homes. Every season, Tall Tails will donate a blanket to a local animal shel ter. The program is simple—buy a Tall Tails blanket at talltailsdog.com, and the company will donate a blanket to a local animal shelter, with the goal of donating 5,000 blankets to animal shelters across the country.

West Paw’s Big Sky Blanket (pictured on page 34) gets comfortably in the mid dle of dogs and dirt. This dog blanket is perfect thrown on couches, chairs, or car interiors to keep them clean from dander, dirt and drool. Made with smooth faux suede on one side and a soft fleece fabric on the other, it gets softer wash after wash. Speaking of soft, fashionable Fidos will love Harry Barker’s stylish sweater (also on page 34). With a ribbed turtleneck and sophisticated pattern, your preppy pup will look dashing from fireside snuggles to chilly winter walks.

Above: Jasper enjoys a snuggle with Tall Tails’ super soft, Winter Walk fleece blanket.

protect said furniture from slobber and other unmen tionables. Choose from Truffle Brown or Husky Gray (pictured on page 34)—both feature super soft, faux fur on one side and heavy duty canvas on the other.

WELCOME HOME. They say our home is our castle, but really it’s just one big dog house and we wouldn’t have it any other way, but we can make sure our guests are greeted to a smelly-free home. Odor neutralizing candles like NelliDesigns are a good alternative to sprays and are made with eco-soy wax, an all natural vegetable wax without any additives, so they burn clean. NelliDesigns candles come in a variety of designs and scents including Puppy Love (lavendar/vanilla) and Home (Frasier fir).

One Fur All candles are specially made to freshen pet-loving homes, with delicious scents for the holiday season like Apple Cider, with just the right blend of apple juice, cloves and cinnamon. Or, Pumpkin Spice, a blend of pumpkin, cinnamon sugar, maple butter and vanilla bean.

SERVE IT UP IN STYLE. If there’s one thing we can all agree on, it’s that we love to spoil our pups and what better way to spoil them than with a barkuterie…er…charcuterie board designed just for dogs? Whether hosting a birthday pawty or celebrating the howlidays, your dog and doggy friends will drool for their own barkuterie board. Learn how to create your own on page 38, starting with a paw-shaped, bamboo cut ting board from Totally Bamboo.

And, speaking of serving it up in style, we love the bold look of Hiddin’s clear acrylic double feeder, pictured above with Vital Essentials’ Rabbit Mini Nibs. Made from responsibly sourced rabbit, this easy-to-serve freeze-dried dog food has a satisfying crunch and the natural goodness your dog craves. With a gentle waterfall design, Hiddin’s clear lucite pet feeder is sturdy and modern and gives the sleek metal bowls a floating effect.

PLAY TIME. When you have kids, whether they are two- or four-legged, waking up to toys under the tree is a must. Harry Barker’s plush dog toys are perfect, with pet friendly eco-fiberfill that is made from 100% re cycled plastic bottles. Incredibly soft, their new, nature-inspired designs are sure to captivate your pup. Pictured here (left) is their teddy bear and dapper fox, gathered together in Hiddin’s clear acrylic storage bin (also on next page). As you can see, it doubles as the perfect foot rest, especially when wearing a pair of Too Cozy Pooch Parade slippers from BOBS from Skechers with memory foam insole.

BATH TIME. Nobody loves a dirty dog, particularly when it’s holiday party time. That’s why we love Skout’s Honor and their wide array of grooming products including Probiotic Shampoo and Conditioner (pictured on page 32). It gently cleans and moisturizes the skin and coat, with avocado oil and topical probiotics that help support a healthy microbiome to defend against common skin problems such as itching, odor, dryness, dandruff, hot spots, yeast and excessive shedding. Pair it with the Probiotic Deodorizer for a fresh-smelling house and hound!

And, while we’re on the subject, we are true believers in the Skout’s Honor Laundry Booster (right). We use it when washing anything smelly like dog blankets, towels and bedding, with great results. It’s not overly scented, so items come out smelling clean and fresh.

BED TIME. Treat your dog to a bed that never goes out of style with the Seaside Boxy Bed by P.L.A.Y. (pictured above, right). We love any bed by P.L.A.Y., but this is their newest design, featuring a modern striped print on one side and solid color on the other, giving you the versatility to mix and match in any home décor. The entire bed is made with ultra-soft velvet fabric for the highest level of comfort for your canine, nap after nap, wash after wash. (As I write this, my dog Thya is literally curled up, sound asleep on her Seaside Boxy Bed!)

Being good all year can be ruff, so reward your nice (not naughty) friend with P.L.A.Y.’s Merry Woofmas Plush Toy Collection featuring five cheerful holiday toys in the shape of a hang-able stocking, a tasty plate of cookies, an ornament-filled Christmas tree, a tug-able elf, and a silly Santa dog toy. Your furry friend will be howling with joy once they see this set waiting for them under the tree (pictured on next page)!

EAT, DRINK AND BE MERRY. Perfect for picky eaters, Top Shelf Dog food is made from real, whole ingredients fortified with the key vitamins and minerals your dog needs. With ingredients like chicken, quinoa, carrots and green beans, use it as a complete and balanced meal or as a topper

to enhance your dog’s kibble. Each pouch is completely shelf-stable and can be stored in your pantry for up to 12 months.

While Fido indulges, sip on a cup o’ joe while doing some good— California-based Grounds & Hounds Coffee Co. is committed to using the sale of their fair trade organic, specialty coffees to support the no kill rescue community by donating 20% of their proceeds. Choose from blends like Nice List—with warm, rich, savory aromatics, it’s perfect for Sunday mornings (or every morning) during the holidays. Or, their seasonal Pumpkin Spice Blend, with notes of fresh ground cinnamon, pie spice, baked pumpkin and toasted vanilla bean.

When embibing later in the day (and in keeping with the overall doggone theme), we reccomend a glass of Sleeping Dog Wines. Our favorite is their Montelpuciano, but the Yakima Valley winery creates many award-winning wines including their 2017 Sirius, a port-style wine, perfect for holiday entertaining. Find a store near you at their website or for those of you not near a Northwest wine shop, you can order a selection of their wines online at sleepingdogwines.com.

Here’s a friendly reminder that wine, grapes and raisins are toxic to dogs, so be sure to keep them far out of reach of Rover. Instead, serve your canine something he will love—a bottle of non-alcoholic, beef or chicken-flavored Bowser Beer (more on page 25). Yum!

HOW TO MAKE THE PERFECT BARKUTERIE BOARD

If there’s one thing we can all agree on, it’s that we love to spoil our pups and what better way to spoil them than with a barkuterie…er…charcuterie board designed just for dogs? Whether hosting a birthday pawty or celebrating the howlidays, your dog and doggy friends will drool for their own barkuterie board.

Start with the board. We love this paw-shaped, bamboo cutting board from Totally Bamboo, perfect for any dog lover’s kitchen. Fun and functional, it pays homage to our furry friends, while providing the perfect vessel for our ingredients.

Next, choose your treats. Load the board up with healthy snacks like cucumber, carrots, green and red apple slices and blueberries—take some of those fruits and veggies and stamp out dog bones using a bone-shaped cookie cutter. Next, add cubes of cheese—you can apply the same bone-shaped cookie cutter method here as well. Be sure to include every dog’s all-time favorite treat—peanut butter! Spoon some into a ramekin and use as a dip for dog biscuits, apple slices and veggies.

Top and above: Creating the perfect barkuterie board is easier than you think. Simply raid your cupboards and fridge of fruits, veggies, cheese and peanut butter then add your dog’s favorite treats, and voila! The perfect barkuterie board.

Lastly, your barkuterie board would not be complete without some kind of meaty treat—‘charcuterie’ literally means the ‘products of a fancy pork butcher’. For our holiday soiree, we like Polkadog’s Shepherd’s Pie lamb treats and Silver & Gold cod skins (warning: these treats are stinky, but what dog doesn’t love a stinky treat?!) plus good ol’ Pup-peroni sticks. Lastly, fill any gaps with sprinkles of kibble or Polkadog’s Season’s Eatings soft and chewy training treats.

CUISINE HOLIDAY

What is it about the holidays that inspires one to dust off the baking pans, don an apron and start mixing up a batch of something delicious? Maybe it’s the change in weather, spending more time indoors, the smell of freshly baked cookies to bring back childhood memories, or all of the above. Whatever the reason, ‘tis the season for whipping up some delicious treats for you and your hound, inspired by local chefs and CityDog readers alike!

WOODFORD’S ORGANIC TURKEY BURGER

Chef Maria Hines eats organic. From 2006 to 2020, she served her custom ers at Tilth Restaurant all-organic. So, why wouldn’t her great Dane Wood ford (pictured on left) and her viszla Cedar eat organic, too? Chef Maria, win ner of the James Beard Award for Best Chef Northwest and former owner of Tilth in Wallingford, shares one of her favorite, all-organic recipes as our main dish for your dog’s holiday meal.

8 oz. ground turkey ½ egg ⅛ c. carrot, minced ⅛ c. peas, chopped

½ c. brown rice, cooked 1 TB parsley, fresh, chopped 1 tsp. black pepper, ground

1. Mix your all-organic ingredients together and form two burger patties. 2. In a non-stick pan heat up the olive oil and place patties in pan. 3. Cook for 4-6 minutes on each side.

HEALTHY SIDES FOR YOUR HOUND

Next, with the help of chefs Jenny Izaguirre, formerly with Seattle’s Bell + Whete and Stew Navarre, vice president of operations at Jack’s BBQ (both pictured above), we’ve cooked up some recipes to keep your dog drooling, with four-year-old Hadi (Maltese-poodle-mix) and six-year-old Finn (basenji-mix) as our four-legged taste testers. Our mixologist has even created a super healthy mocktail for your mutt!

TEMPTING TREATS

Making special treats for our sick animals is one very important way we can support them. There are times, indeed, when all they will eat are treats. Here is a recipe that can be easily adapted to meet the changing tastes of your companion.

1 cup apple sauce

2 teaspoons Saigon cinnamon 2 teaspoons carob powder

1. Preheat oven to 325ºF. 2. Cover cookie sheet with parchment paper. 3. Combine all ingredients in a food processor or blender. 4. Turn out dough onto a lightly floured surface and knead well. 5. Cut into desired shapes and place on cookie sheet, or place dough in middle of cookie sheet, roll out to the corners, and lightly score with a knife or pizza cutter. 6. Bake for 20 minutes, then turn oven down to 175ºF and allow to bake for 40 more minutes. 7. Allow treats to cool in the oven. Store in an airtight container or Ziploc bag.

CARROT FLAN

2 cups finely grated raw carrot

6 raw egg yolks

6 tablespoons filtered water or stock (recipe above)

1/2 teaspoon sea salt

1. Preheat oven to 350ºF. 2. Lightly grease a Pyrex or cake pan. 3. Whisk egg yolks with water or stock, and add sea salt. Add grated carrot and mix thoroughly. 4. Bake for 30 minutes. 5. Cool, cut into strips, and serve. This recipe can be topped with goat yogurt. In place of carrots, try sweet potatoes, and season with cinnamon. This recipe originated in England. The original comes from a won derful book called Nature’s Children by Juliette de Bairacli Levy.

If baking is your jam, here are two recipes from CityDog readers that are sure to make tails wag! Give them as gifts to your pups’s dog park pals or let your treat hound keep them all for himself.

RASCAL’S CHRISTMAS CUPCAKES

3 boneless, skinless chicken breasts (or about 12 ounces ground chicken)

4 eggs

½ cup canola oil

1 ½ cups oat flour

½ tsp baking powder

½ cup chopped Italian parsley

½ cup grated carrot

For the “frosting:”

Whipped cream cheese

Unsalted chicken broth to taste

1. Preheat oven to 350.Grease cake or muffin tins. 2. Puree the chicken breasts in a food processor until minced. Add eggs and oil; pulse lightly until combined. Combine oat flour and baking powder; add to chicken mixture and pulse until combined. Add parsley and carrot and pulse until thoroughly distributed. (Can all be combined by hand if you don’t have a processor). 3. Pour mixture into cake or muffin tin(s). Cake(s) will raise slightly, so don’t overfill the muffin tins too much. 4. Bake about 30 minutes for muffins, about 45 minutes for one large cake — or until a thermometer inserted into cake reads 180 degrees. Cool completely. 5. To frost, whip pre-whipped cream cheese with a few tablespoons of unsalted chicken broth. Spread liberally onto cake(s).

STEVE AND KAT’S WOOSCOTTI

In a mixer, combine:

2 cups whole-wheat flour

1 tablespoon baking powder

2 pinches ground cinnamon

1 cup peanut butter

1 cup milk

1. Preheat oven to 400. Grease cookie sheet.

2. Place dough on cookie sheet and shape into a long, flat log (about 1-inch thick). 3. Bake for 20 minutes. 4. Let cool then cut into 1-inch thick slices and bake for another 10-12 minutes until crisp. 5. While cooling, melt about ½ cup of carob chips in microwave. If you need to thin the melted carob, just add a bit of water. Once your carob is melted, drizzle it over sliced Wooscotti.

SANTA CLAWS’ MILK & COOKIES

Christmas comes but once a year, but *ahem* your dog delivers joy every day. What about saying thanks with a canine midnight snack? Turn any dog’s day into Christmas with this festive mini-feast. Why not? They’re on the “nice” list—and this treat-toy distraction will keep them off the “naughty” one.

2/3 c of raw food total

3 Tbsp plain yogurt or Open Farm kefir

2-3 fresh mint or parsley leaves

3 fresh or dried cranberries

3-4 Tbsp chopped cooked chicken or turkey Sprinkle cinnamon Dog cookie of choice Large or small Toppl toy by West Paw

1. Plug the side hole of your Toppl with wine cork. 2. Place a portion of your dog’s meal inside the base of Toppl. 3. Add a bit of chopped chicken or turkey, and layer with sprinkle of your dog’s meal on top. 4. If using kibble, add 1-2 spoons of bone broth onto the kibble, leav ing about a small finger-width gap between the contents and the top lip of the Toppl—that’s where the “icing” (aka yogurt or kefir) goes. 5. Freeze the Toppl for minimum 4 hours. 6. With a small spoon or squeeze bottle, slowly fill the remaining top of the Toppl with yogurt or Kefir. 7. Sprinkle one small pinch cinnamon into the center. 8. Once the Toppl is filled, place a cranberry with two mint leaves (or parsley sprigs) on top for safe mistletoe look. 9. Garnish with a dog cookie of choice into the side, resting on the lip. 10. If your dog has been EXTRA good, place a Canine Candy Cane (recipe below) in the top, like a festive straw. 11. Place back into the freezer for minimum four hours. 12. Remove from freezer (and uncork the side hole).

CANINE CANDY CANE

In 1670, a German choirmaster invented the first candy canes. Why? The “sugar sticks” shushed kiddos during church sermons. Keep your four-legged kids out of trouble in the sweetest way possible with healthy fruit, probiotic-rich yogurt, and no added sugar.

Fresh raspberries, crushed (3-4 raspberries per mold)

Plain Greek yogurt (1 Tbsp of plain greek yogurt per water bottle ice cube tray mold, depending on size)

Water bottle ice cube tray

1. Mash your fruit of choice and set aside. 2. Fill your water bottle ice cube tray first with mashed berries, using your fingers to create space an even space in between the berries. Use a dry paper towel to absorb any juice from the empty paces to ensure the red color won’t bleed into the white yogurt later. Freeze. 3. Remove your tray from the freezer and begin filling the gaps with the plain greek yogurt—this two-step method keeps the colors from running together. Place the tray back into the freezer for a minimum of three hours.

SOME HOLIDAY CHEER FOR HUMANS

Round out your own holiday cheer with a delicious combination of pomegranate and champagne—a simple, yet elegant cocktail for any festive occasion.

For each drink, place a sugar cube in a champagne flute and add two tablespoons of 100% bottled pomegranate juice. Fill the flute the rest of the way with chilled sparkling wine and stir gently.

Regardless of the season, it’s always great to have a healthy stock on hand that also rocks, especially for Fido! Mix with his kibble to enhance his food, or pour into ice trays for a tasty summer treat!

STOCK THAT ROCKS

24 cups filtered water

3 pounds chicken backs and necks

2 carrots, in pieces

2 celery stalks, in pieces

3 Shitake mushrooms, dried or fresh

2 garlic cloves

1 piece fresh ginger

12 white peppercorns

1 to 2 tablespoons Kosher salt, to taste

Handful fresh parsley, Italian or curly

Other fresh herbs to taste (thyme, orega no, sage, rosemary)

1. Put all ingredients in a large stockpot. 2. Bring to a rolling boil, skim off the foam, turn the heat down to simmer, and leave the pot to sit and stew all day. 3. Refrigerate overnight. 4. Next morning, skim off the fat, remove the meat and vegetables, strain the stock into storage containers and freeze. This will give you a nutrient-dense broth to add to any recipe or as a topper for regular meals.

HOW TO STOP YOUR CANINE FROM COUNTER SURFING

Your dog smells delicious bacon or roasted chicken on your kitchen counter. Their scavenger instincts take over and they quickly grab some food and eat it. They might even wait until you’re not paying attention to get a quick bite without being noticed.

Scavenging is a natural canine behavior and counter surfing is an excellent opportunity to find new food. It takes very little to pique your dog’s interest to see what is up on the counter. It might be something delicious like beef or chicken but it could be an onion, avocado, or grapes, all of which are toxic for dogs.

WHAT IS COUNTER SURFING? Counter surfing is when your dog stands on its hind legs, sniffing and pawing at the kitchen counter in the hopes of scoring food. Most dogs will stand on their hind legs, take a look at what’s on the counter and reach for anything they think might be edible.

Some dogs learn to do this by accident when they are exploring the kitchen. Other dogs discover counter surfing when they see food fall from the counter and search for where the food came from. In most cases, they can simply smell delicious food, and, following their nose, they find the counter.

IS COUNTER SURFING COMMON? Counter surfing is far from unusual. Your kitchen’s delicious aromas, combined with a dog’s natural curiosity, make your counter irresistible. However, counter surfing is a bad habit that can be dangerous and lead to serious health problems. Your dog might eat food or materials that are harmful or toxic, including: Chocolate, avocados, chicken bones, grapes, raisins, onions, garlic and plastic rap.

If your dog eats food that is potentially harmful or toxic, we recommend reaching out to ASPCA Poison Control for advice and treatment options.

WHY DOES MY DOG COUNTER SURF?

Your dog may have started counter surfing because they may be: Hungry, bored or frustrated or simply tempted by delicious-smelling food.

If your dog has been able to get food off the counter once, they’ll try again and again—even if they can’t always get a reward for their efforts. Think of slot machines in Las Vegas: random reinforcement keeps us glued to the chair, pulling the lever to see if maybe this time, the big payday is here. It’s the same for your dog; if they can get food occasionally, there’s that tantalizing chance that this time is the payoff.

Your dog can smell the food that’s on the counter, whether it’s chicken, bacon, fruit, or bread. James Walker, former director of the Sensory Research Institute at Florida State University, studied dogs’ sense of smell. He explained that if you compare the sense of smell to vision, what we humans can see at a third of a mile, a dog could see more than 3,000 miles

away and even further. No wonder dogs can pick up scents much more quickly than you or me! Fortunately, there are many ways that you can discourage your dog from counter surfing.

5 STRATEGIES TO KEEP YOUR DOG FROM COUNTER SURFING

• Remove opportunities for counter surfing. Remove all food from the counter, and place it in the pantry, microwave, fridge, or drawer. When your food is in the proper place, your dog will be less likely to smell it and won’t have easy access.

• Provide your dog with opportunities to scavenge. Dr Crista Coppola, a Certified Animal Behaviorist for SeniorTailWaggers. com, recommends using “an appropriate toy like a snuffle mat, tricky treat ball, or Kong wobbler” to give your dog an opportunity to scavenge while reinforcing appropriate behavior. This can be especially helpful if the dog is inclined to counter surf at certain times (when you are cooking meals, eating meals, washing dishes, or when you have left the room).

• If your dog puts its paws on the counter, give them a firm “Off!” Use “off” instead of “down” because they mean different things. Use the command “down” for lying down, and use “off” when you want them to get off of something. When they get off the counter, say “Yes!” and reward them with praise or treats. If you opt to use goodies, avoid using treats from the counter.

• Use baby gates or a crate to block your dog’s access to the kitchen, especially when you’re cooking.

Ensure your entire family is consistently redirecting your dog’s behavior. If one family member isn’t following the rules, it will be more difficult for your dog to learn what to do.

SHOULD YOU PUNISH A DOG WHO COUNTER SURFS?

You should not. Punishment does NOT teach dogs what they should do. Teaching using positive reinforcement is a lot more effective. Avoid punishing your dog using shock mats, yelling, physical corrections, holding a dog’s mouth closed or alpha rolls.

These kinds of punishments may cause your dog to fear you, or the kitchen, become aggressive, urinate submissively, become anxious, or distrust you, weakening the bond between the two of you.

It’s understandable to be frustrated with your dog when you catch them counter surfing, particularly when you have to clean up the aftermath. But you should not punish your dog: putting a few proactive strategies into place to remove any opportunities for counter surfing is the best strategy to prevent your dog’s paws from leaving their mark on the counter.

MUDDY MUTTS

WITH RAINY WALKS, MUDDY PAWS AND THE DREADED WET DOG SMELL, KEEPING YOUR DOG CLEAN DURING WINTER CAN SEEM LIKE QUITE A CHORE. HERE ARE SOME TIPS FOR KEEPING FIDO FRESH.

For most pet parents, a rainy day means a wet dog and a dirty home. However, it’s important, not only to keep your dog and home smelling fresh, but also to help prevent fleas and matting.

If you’re an active dog owner who spends a lot of time outside with your pup, you probably don’t want to let a little bad weather ruin your time. That’s why we’ve asked the team at tails.com to share their top tips to keep your dog looking and smelling clean when it’s raining.

Whether your dog has been splashing in muddy puddles, or even rolling about in animal poo, if your pooch returns home as a mucky pup, it is important that you wash or wipe them down as soon as possible. Cleaning your dog at the earliest opportunity gives the dirt less time to set in, which is better for both your dog and your home.

HOW OFTEN SHOULD YOU WASH YOUR

DOG? For many dogs, baths aren’t top of the list when it comes to things they enjoy—but unfortunately for them, it’s unavoidable. So, if your dog hasn’t managed to cover itself in mud or something worse, how often should you wash them? Well, the truth is that you don’t really need to wash your dog on a regular schedule. Your dog’s coat has evolved to clean itself of the basic day-to-day grime, and given that they can’t sweat, they won’t be producing any BO in the way we would define it.

That being said, we are all aware of a certain funk that can build up on our dogs if they haven’t been washed or groomed for a while. For many owners, this isn’t an issue, but for those who find themselves with a stinky pup, we would advise that you wash your dog no more than once per month—less if you can.

Too much washing can actually cause your dog some problems, as they have very sensitive skin. What’s more, if you use any flea or worming treatments that are applied to your dog’s coat, these will be washed out with each bath leaving your pet vulnerable to those parasites.

USE

THE RIGHT SHAMPOO

It is essential that you avoid using human shampoo on your dog. The chemi cals that we put onto our hair are no good for keeping your dog’s fur clean, and can potentially be harmful to their coat and skin. There are plenty of quality and affordable dog shampoos available, but if you are in a pinch, then a small amount of baby shampoo will do as these tend to be mild and won’t contain any harm ful chemicals. We recommend Skout’s Honor Probiotic Shampoo and Conditioner.

In addition to baths, there are plenty of other ways to keep on top of your hound’s hygiene including ‘wa terless’ cleaning products on the market like dry dog shampoo and cleaning mitts, to help keep your dog smelling and looking clean without getting them wet.

FACED WRITTEN BY BRANDIE AHLGREN PHOTOGRAPHY BY PAVLINA TRAUSKEOVA

PROTECT THEIR PAWS As the temperature drops and the weather turns to snow, it is worth considering how sensitive our pet’s paw-pads are to icy conditions and grit on the road. Regularly tending to your dog’s paws with warm water and a moist cloth will not only be soothing for your dog but help to clean up one of the main areas that spread dirt around your home.

During fall and winter, it is extra impor tant to keep checking your dog’s paws after a walk, as bits of debris and leaves can get stuck between their pads and cause irrita tion. Additionally, a pet balm such as Skout’s Honor Prebiotic Pet Balm, provides ongoing protection, while soothing dry, itchy paws and noses (see more to the right).

FEED THEM RIGHT You can help keep your dog’s coat glossy and healthy by ensuring that they are eating the right food. Your dog’s coat relies on protein, so feeding your pooch a good, balanced diet maintains their healthy glow on the outside as well as on the inside. We recommend Top Shelf Dog.

BRUSHING IS BEST Brushing your dog frequently is the best way to keep their fur clean from anything that they might pick up while out and about. Jumping through piles of leaves is a great source of fun for your pup, but it is also a really easy way for them to pick up fleas and ticks. Thoroughly brushing at least once a day will help to comb out any unwelcome visitors and keep your dog’s coat looking and feeling smooth.

STAY ALLERGY ALERT Autumn can be a tough time for pets who are susceptible to allergies—one in five of our four-legged friends suffer from allergies. There are certain plants that thrive during the autumn months and combined with the number of falling leaves, there is quite a substantial amount of pollen around at this time of year. Tell tale allergy signs are sneezing, watery eyes and coughing. You should seek advice from your vet if you believe your pooch is starting to display these symptoms.

WEAR WATERPROOF Investing in a good quality, waterproof dog coat will keep your pooch dry during the wet winter months. The best features to look out for when pick ing out a coat for your dog are waterproof ing, durability, double-lining, ‘adjustability’ (fit) and affordability. We recommend anything made by Ruffwear.
