Miami architect Oscar Glottman also played colorful art and furnishings against white walls and floors in a Fisher Island home. “The house was designed to showcase a collection of art for the client,” he says. “We were trying to minimize the walls to become a backdrop for the art and the furniture that was sculptural in nature.” More color was added to the ceiling with cathoderay lighting in bright blue and orange in curves and straight lines. The window treatments, which run the length of the room, use white as a backdrop for the orange bands that become more obvious at night. The orange chairs and blue leather sofa pick up the colors in painted cubes by Dutch abstract artist Rene Rietmeyer. Books on the vertical hanging bookcases also pick up the colors. “I didn’t want to make the furniture stand out,” he says. “I wanted more color in the art, window treatments and the ceiling. Everything was supposed to look like art objects, including the bookcases... “It takes a special sensitivity in dealing with color to balance it properly in order for it to become essential to the design and not overbearing. If you use color with an architectural sensitivity and not just for its decorative capacity, you can achieve a more lasting result.”
