n behalf of the Hong Kong Rugby Union, it is my great pleasure to welcome international visitors to Hong Kong for the Cathay Pacific/HSBC Hong Kong Sevens 2016, the showcase event of what is renowned around the world as the ‘HK Sevens Week’. Each year, the Sevens attracts a full house of 120,000 local and international spectators over three days of world-class rugby and revelry at the magnificent Hong Kong Stadium. The Hong Kong Rugby Union has once again rolled out the red carpet for visiting fans in 2016 with a comprehensive array of entertainment and community engagement in the days leading up to the tournament kick-off and during the event itself. All of this accompanies a myriad of local Hong Kong club rugby events running the gamut from social to elite rugby tournaments for youth, women and men; details of all that’s going on are in the pages of this special issue. Among the highlights of this year’s build-up to the Sevens is the new official HKSevens Kick-off Concert on Wednesday, 6 April, featuring The Proclaimers, ABBA tribute band Björn Again, and a very special guest host… entertainment icon David Hasselhoff. We also encourage tourists to drop in at our HKSevens fan engagement zone in Chater Gardens in Central, as we bring the excitement, entertainment and passion of the Sevens to the heart of Hong Kong in the build up to the main event. Over the weekend itself, the zone will be open for fans to experience the ‘Sevens in the City’ festival with the tournament beamed Live into Chater Garden. Everyone can enjoy the Sevens together with a variety of food, beverages and games as the Sevens weekend is shared with the community outside of the stadium. As ever, I would like to thank all of the fans for their great support. The Hong Kong Sevens is a key driver in the growing and building awareness of rugby across our community and also helps to fund our development programmes 365 days a year. See you at the Sevens!

016 marks the debut of Rugby Sevens as an Olympic sport at this year’s Summer Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Rugby will return to the Games for the first time since 1924, when the traditional fifteen-aside version of the game last featured at an Olympics. With rugby’s return to the Olympic family, global interest in the seven-a-side game is surging. The teams participating in the HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series have responded in kind, with this year’s Series one of the most closely contested since the debut of the international circuit in 1999. Heading into the Hong Kong leg, the seventh round on this year’s ten-event Series, just two points separate the three leading contenders in the standings – Fiji, South Africa and New Zealand – each of whom have won two tournaments so far this season. With the arrival of the sport’s most famous weekend, in the Cathay Pacific/HSBC Hong Kong Sevens, the excitement is reaching fever pitch.

As the largest tournament on the World Series – featuring 28 teams, rather than the 16 that play at the other tournaments – the Hong Kong Sevens offers fans the chance to witness a dress rehearsal of what Rugby at the Olympics will offer the sporting world this summer. All eleven of the men’s teams already qualified for the Olympics will be appearing in Hong Kong, for the first time to date on this year’s Series. Those teams are Fiji, South Africa, New Zealand, Great Britain (playing here as England), Australia, Argentina, United States, France, Kenya, Japan and the hosts, Brazil. The Hong Kong Sevens also encompasses a World Rugby Sevens Series Qualifier with 12 international teams participating – two from each of World Rugby’s six international regions. The stakes are high in this innovative competition with the winner of the Qualifier being promoted directly to next year’s Series. In June, qualification tournaments will be held to confirm the final twelfth team for the Olympics, in both the men’s and women’s competitions. Twelve of the sixteen teams participating in the men’s qualifier, which will be held in Monaco, are also taking part in the Cathay Pacific/HSBC Hong Kong Sevens, including Hong Kong. The national sides featuring in Hong Kong this weekend and in contention for the last spot at the Rio Games are Canada, Chile, Germany, Hong Kong, Mexico, Morocco, Russia, Samoa, Spain, South Korea, Tonga and Zimbabwe. The Hong Kong Women’s team, which competes in the Hong Kong Women’s Rugby Sevens on Thursday and Friday of HKSevens Week, have also qualified for the final Olympic women’s qualifier, which will be held in Dublin, Ireland in June. World Rugby Chairman Bernard Lapasset believes that Rio 2016 will be a pivotal moment for a sport that is experiencing record global expansion. "Olympic Games participation will be a gamechanger for rugby's growth and popularity worldwide. Global participation has already doubled since the vote in 2009, with women's participation increasing by five times,” noted the chairman of the world’s governing body for the game. Attracted by the prestige of an Olympic medal, rugby's biggest stars, including Sonny Bill Williams, Bryan Habana, Liam Messam and Quade Cooper, are eyeing Rio 2016 and set to thrill new audiences. "The Olympic opportunity will further rugby's reach and appeal globally, which is very exciting," added Lapasset. For local and international fans of the game, the excitement comes from watching and participating in the annual feast of world-class rugby that is the Cathay Pacific/HSBC Hong Kong Sevens, made even sweeter by awareness of the central and colourful role of the tournament in the global rise of rugby sevens, and the prospect that the World’s Best Sevens is set to grow even further.

he 41st edition of the granddaddy of rugby sevens tournaments will garner worldwide attention from rugby fans like never before as teams prepare themselves in earnest in their quest for Olympic glory later this year in Rio, Brazil. Sixteen teams will compete in the Hong Kong leg of the HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series, including the 15 regular participants of the core competition and South Korea, this year’s invitee. The teams will be divided into four pools of four teams each, with the top seeds determined based on the latest overall standings in the competition. After the initial group stage of round-robin matches, the tournament will begin the knockout stage of the competitions as teams will vie for the four trophies given out, which are the Cup - for the overall winner, the Plate (fifth best team overall), the Bowl (ninth best overall team), and the Shield (13th best overall team).

After a surprisingly slow start to the Series, which saw the vaunted All Blacks languishing in seventh place on the series table, New Zealand found their mojo, winning three of the last four tournaments to climb into third place and only two points behind Fiji. Samoa 薩摩 Samoan teams are known to play rugged and hard-tackling rugby. This team is no exception. The team possess some strong bodies and good pace and are always a tough out for anybody when they are on! Just one point behind the Series leaders in the standings, the Springboks have been the most consistent performers to date, featuring key players with pace and skills. Russia 俄羅斯 Russia were promoted to the Series from last year’s Qualifier tournament in Hong Kong and have managed to stay just above the cellar. World Rugby Sevens Series Qualifier 2016 世界七人欖球系列賽 外圍賽2016
The World Rugby Sevens Series Qualifier tournament features 12 teams, two from each of World Rugby’s six regions. The winner will be promoted to the HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series in 2016/17. As Rugby Sevens joins the Olympic family in Rio later this year, the level of interest across the world is reaching new heights, as demonstrated by some of the non-traditional rugby countries appearing in this year’s Qualifier. Cayman Islands will make their Hong Kong Sevens debut in the Qualifier, becoming the 60th nation to take part since 1976. Recent form suggests Japan, on a high after recording the biggest upset in Rugby World Cup history last September when the Brave Blossoms beat South Africa, will be one of the top contenders come Sunday. A victory would return them to the Series after they were relegated to the Qualifier through finishing rock bottom in 2015. So far, Japan has turned in some highly competitive performances as the invitee in four outings on this year’s Series. That experience will go a long way towards preparing them for the challenges posed by former Series side Spain and last year’s losing Qualifier finalists Zimbabwe. But with all the teams keen for promotion to the prestigious Series competition, expect hard-fought matches throughout the tournament. Hosts Hong Kong can never be counted out with their customary boost from the cheering crowds, which may just be enough to carry them across the finish line.

Sabre Kowloon RugbyFest 2016 Sabre 九龍欖球嘉年華2016 One of the more fun events during HKSevens Rugby week, the Sabre Kowloon Rugbyfest has, since its inception in 2001 and first competition in March 2002, not only grown in size but become an integral part of Hong Kong’s week of rugby madness. Rugbyfest has been visited by teams from all over the world and from every continent! Now in its 15th year, RugbyFest will host 24 men's teams and 6 ladies teams. Pool matches are played throughout the day, culminating in the Finals from 5pm. This year teams from China, Macau, Singapore and UAE will join the best of Hong Kong’s local youth clubs for a 7s competition at Under 14, 16 and 18 age groups in a day of competition, fun, and friendship. The tournament is held at King’s Park Sports Ground and runs alongside the first day of the Women’s Sevens, so spectators will have plenty of rugby to enjoy. Hong Kong are making their fifth bid for a spot on the men’s World Series and enter the campaign with another year of professional training as an elite sport at the Hong Kong Sports Institute under their belts. Hong Kong is pooled alongside Zimbabwe, who reached the final of last year’s Qualifier, Germany and debutants Cayman Islands. The challenge is getting tougher according to coach Gareth Baber, “The quality of the teams in the Qualifier has risen yet again. There are five or six teams in the mix and a number of them have much more experience on the international series than us, either this season or in the recent past,” Baber added. Japan, who are a year removed from a full-time spot on the international series, leads all of the Qualifier teams with four appearances in this year’s circuit. Brazil and Zimbabwe have both played in one tournament already this season, while Spain was previously one of the core teams participating across all events on the Series. The loss of try-scoring threat Tom McQueen and grafting forward Mark Wright to injury has created space for Baber to call upon a few players from the new Hong Kong Rugby Union Elite Rugby Programme, Hong Kong’s first professional fifteen-a-side platform. The new programme gives Baber more choices as he looks to get his charges in position for a run at glory in the Stadium once again.
Hong Kong are competing in the ten-team Hong Kong Women’s Rugby Sevens, the world's longest-running international women’s sevens competition, marking its 19th anniversary this year. Hong Kong are pooled alongside Asian champions Japan, Argentina, Thailand and Sri Lanka. In keeping with the HKRU’s commitment to supporting the development of women’s rugby in Hong Kong and around the world, the women’s sevens cup final has been played as part of the Cathay Pacific/HSBC Hong Kong Sevens since 1999. Coach Anna Richards commented on the field saying, “There’s a good range of teams with sides from Africa, Europe and South America, alongside the top teams from Asia.” Last year, Hong Kong narrowly missed out on reaching their first cup final under the lights at the Stadium, advancing to the semi-finals after dispatching a slew of Asian opponents, including then Asian champions China in the pool stages. It was Hong Kong’s best ever performance in the HKWRS. “We got on a roll last year with a great start on the opening day when we beat China and Kazakhstan. Those performances gave us the self-belief we needed to go out and compete on day two. We will need another fast start this year as we need to finish either first or second in our group to advance to the cup,” Richards said.

What better way to warm up for the weekend of world class sport and entertainment than the HKSevens Kick-off Concert on Wednesday, 6 April, at the Sevens Village directly across from the Stadium. David Hasselhoff, international recording artist and star of the seminal television series Knight Rider and Baywatch, will host the concert, joined by Scottish rockers The Proclaimers and renowned ABBA tribute band Björn Again. The Scottish band The Proclaimers features twin brothers Charlie and Craig Reid. Best known for their global hit “I’m Gonna Be (500 Miles)”, the Proclaimers tour extensively around the world. The Cathay Pacific/HSBC Hong Kong Sevens has again raised the entertainment bar in 2016, once more bringing together iconic acts from around the world to thrill the 40,000 capacity crowd in spectacular style! The opening ceremony at 5.45pm on Friday combines traditional Chinese lion eye-dotting with dance groups and a spectacular Giant Flying Dragon performance. On Saturday Scottish rock legends The Proclaimers will be performing live on the pitch at 2.30pm following the March Past. On Sunday the world’s greatest Abba tribute band Björ n Again from Australia will perform live at 1.10pm. Up on the East Upper Level concourse, some of Hong Kong's best young local musical talent will be performing on a ministage over the course of the weekend. rom the tournament's earliest days, the fans attending the Hong Kong Sevens have helped make this one of the most keenly anticipated sporting events in Asia not only for the fast-paced action on the pitch, but also for the carnival-like party atmosphere inside, and outside, the iconic Hong Kong Stadium. Today, the Hong Sevens conjures up sights and sounds of fans swaying and dancing to the popular hits, vying with their colour costumes to out-do each other in originality and outrageousness, forming “waves” in the stands that never seem to end. . Then the party spills out of the stadium and onto the streets of Hong Kong as Wanchai and Lan Kwai Fong turn into one giant party and a de facto costume parade. So, who wouldn’t want to be a Hong Sevens fan and enjoy the ultimate experience in “fun, fun, fun”!

The trail provides breathtaking views of Shek O, Big Wave Bay and the South China Sea. The ultimate urban retreat. Located on the slopes above Central, Admiralty and Wanchai is the leafy Bowen Road trail which extends for over three kilometres. Popular with joggers, dog lovers and even just strollers, this trail offers tranquility with mesmerizing views overlooking the city, the harbour and the mountains beyond.
The walk winds around the highest point of Hong Kong Island, an easy stroll to catch stunning views of the Hong Kong skyline. Aside from your bird’s eye view of the city (all 360 degrees), you will also encounter impressive mansions.

Lamma Island 南丫島
This beautiful island just south of Hong Kong Island is a weekend favourite for the locals. There are two quaint villages free of motor traffic and a nice beach in between. Start at Yung Shue Wan village and hike to Sok Kwu Wan village and end your pleasant visit with a relaxing dinner at one of the famous seafood restaurants there.
Cheung Chau 長洲

Take a trip to Cheung Chau and enjoy its lush greenery, craggy hillsides, golden beaches and fascinating rock formations along the Mini Great Wall walk.
