5 MINUTES WITH DAVID CLIFFORD PHOTOGRAPHER ( TA S M A N I A )

Nick names: GB, and no I am not going to elaborate on this. Cant’ live without: Family, friends and my camera equipment First Camera: Kodak 640x480 point and shoot, this was the start of a long addiction. Where do you live: Hobart, Tasmania. Born and raised in Adelaide South Australia. Best advice ever given: “If you want the work get off your butt and chase it, as nobody will be chasing you” It was funny that the person who gave me this advice three years later was chasing me. It’s a funny old world. Most Anxious moment: Standing at the hairpin of the Domain stage of Targa Tasmania back in 2006 and have a mini come off the track and fly past me about 2-3 metres away. Most rewarding moment: This would have been in 2007 when I was asked to photograph the inaugural Australian Rugby Union Championships in Melbourne. What are your favourite areas of photography: sport, sport and a whole lot of motorsport. Why these areas: You only get one crack at it, you can not re-set the shoot and when you nail the shot it is a great feeling. What are your goals: My short term goals are to continue promoting and supporting the local Tasmanian motorsport scene by offering a great product. Also continuing my association with Circlework and being part of their growth in the upcoming years. Dumbest thing I have ever done: To try and play golf. Favorite past time outside photography: What, you mean to say there are other things to do. What have been some of your favourite photographic shoots: This is a difficult one, the list is long and varied. I would have to say that the Aust. Rugby Championships, Aust. Superbikes, Shannon Nationals and the Bathurst Motor Festival and 12hr are up there at the top of the list. A close second would be the finish of the Sydney to Hobart Yacht race in 2007.

A Vee Line to Bathurst

words: Bruce Welsh photos: David Clifford

Formula Vee drivers Bruce Welsh and Jez Hammond took to The Mountain early in 2008. Bathurst was always going to be a challenge. The last time the Formula Vee’s had a run there was 1999, pre 1600 category. Jez Hammond and myself together with a combined team of 8 headed East as the W.A. contingent. For us coming from the West it’s an even a harder mountain to climb with very little experience on tracks other than Wanneroo. Bathurst was going to be Jez Hammonds first experience of another circuit in his Aeroplate Ajay 06 1600, whilst I headed east for a second trip after competing at the 2000 Nationals at Oran Park. Jez, the undisputed W.A. 1600 State Champion and I, my claim to fame a third in the 2006 Nationals in my Cambuild/Elvins Jacer, looked towards taking on the wise old men of the East, but make no mistake my trip to Bathurst was just for the experience. With a full grid of 56 cars it was no doubt going to require a common sense approach. Most if not all the other competitors live within 10 – 12hours of any of the major circuits on the east coast and some had experience at Bathurst although in some cases not in a Vee. Jez and Anthony Lees stripped the Ajay back to the chassis and completely rebuilt it for Bathurst including the engine and gearbox. We rebuilt 2 engines and a gearbox for the Jacer. In the 1200 category unlike the 1600’s we have the option of gear ratios. We knew that in ‘99 most competitors ran a tall third, the same configuration as we do at Wanneroo. However, those that did advised they were valve bouncing at around 7000rpm down Conrod and some of them did not last the distance. As we wanted to last the distance we went with a tall diff and intermediate third. Whilst we anticipated a drag up the hill the run down would give us a bit more legs and save the engine. So we headed for Bathurst with 2 new engines, the calculated Bathurst gearbox and our standard Wanneroo box. I was lucky enough to hitch a ride for the car in a Computertrans transporter via work. Jez teamed up with our old Vee mate Dan Gates who was headed to Bathurst with his new, never driven, Falcon Saloon Car. A very interesting testing track, a steep learning curve and experience for Dan! We all flew in on the Thursday and while Jez and Anthony headed to the mountain, we collected the Jacer and followed on. As you drive into Bathurst, to the left, in real Hollywood style are large white letters on the side of the mountain that announce you have arrived at the Holy Grail of Australian Motor Sport, Mount Panorama ! The country street crests a small hill and leads down into Murray’s Bend and the entrance to the circuit. The enormity of it all immediately hits you. All those

early mornings as a child as the black and white flickered images of the start of the great race are now laid out before you. But hang on, the run down Conrod into Murray’s does not look that steep on T.V. Nor the climb up Pit Straight. Hell, X Box and Playstations are not even close ! We head for the pits to unload, grab accreditation and head for a lap or two in the street car to get a feel of what lies ahead. Good plan but it was soon realised the first time I would get a look at the Mountain was practice and not before ! Although credit where credits due, Jez opted to walk the circuit, but after the midnight horror flight I declined. Friday morning was soon with us and the 5.30am start ensured we would be in the pits well before the circuit closure and ready for the numerous drivers meetings. We had fuelled up the previous afternoon with the control fuel so the car except for the last minute tyre pressures was good to go. The one thing that was hammered home in both driver’s briefings (one before and one after practice) was to simply have a good look at the circuit, drive with one’s head and within ones ability. All good in theory, but we all know where the blood goes from the brain once the lights gone out and the pedal goes down. As we pulled out of pit lane and onto the circuit for practice the one thing that immediately took me was just how beautiful this circuit is. Heading up Mountain Straight, the thick lush green lawn borders the very edge of the bitumen and the landscaped gardens of properties on either side gave this beach dweller the feeling of racing through the English countryside. I was soon brought back to the New South Wales countryside as Griffin’s Bend and The Cutting loomed. Practice really became a blur of frantic steering manoeuvres, delicate then panicked dance steps on the pedals and heart pounding hyperventilation that

Jez Hammond in action

lasted for about 5 laps. However, I had now seen the circuit, the car and I was in one piece and I had a new appreciation and admiration for all V8 Supercar drivers. Qualifying was 11.20 and I was looking forward to getting more settled with the circuit as practice really was a nervous experience. We only got 2 laps in when someone came to grief and the session was red flagged. While we were all in the same boat when it came to grid positions for the first race, some of us could have used more than 7 laps before a shot in anger. I ended up 46th on the grid, which equated to 2nd and first row of the 1200’s. The thought around the pits was that the Jacer was sounding a bit rich. So after a discussion with Gerry my mechanic from GerryKay we leaned the main jet a tad for the first race. My only complaint over the weekend was the chaos that was the Dummy Grid. The 3 times we went down to marshall for each race, each time the procedure changed. Space was tight with 56 cars so I do understand they had their work cut out and I must admit each time we got out on the circuit. 46th was pretty much in the apex of Murray’s Bend on somewhat of a slope. A bit of heal and toe was required to avoid a false start. Looking up the famous Pit Straight at the 44 cars ahead was an awesome sight. Off the line the car in front stalled. In an attempt to clear around him aware of 1600’s bearing down from behind I missed 2nd gear. Hunting around the “H” I picked up 4th and was swapped from behind. Happy days! I’m not sure if I was, but I sure as hell felt like I was the last into Hell’s. Not that that was a bad thing as the field 3 wide worked hard to not come to grief. I watched the 1200 pack drive away from me up Mountain Straight. This was their advantage of the standard gearbox. To my surprise and delight their advantage only lasted until Griffin’s Bend. At the bend their engines were still revving high enough for them to take the bend in 4th. I however had to change down. Due to the climb they were forced to change on the other side of the sweeper as the hill took its toll, while I was pulling 5000rpm nicely toward the Cutting.

Bruce the chameleon sneaking up behind unwary 1600’s!.

I slotted in behind them for the climb to Reid Park. Reid Park to Skyline is just an intense part of the circuit. Sweeping flat to the floor left’s together with the off camber allows the car to simply drift to the right before lining up the next apex. Following the bunch gave me a great view of the varied lines through this section as we all tried to find a comfortable groove. That is until the last ripple strip at Mc Phillamy Park. A bump in the circuit right on the racing line into the last apex gave us all a jump to the right. Unsettling the first few times but you get use to it. Our bunch included some of the slower 1600’s which were not so well set up to cope with the conditions through the Esses, Dipper and Forrest Elbow. As such another 1200 and I got caught behind one 1600 in particular, Kevin Humphrey from NSW. Whilst we had the speed on Kevin down out of the Mountain he left us down Conrod then held us up back up and across the top. At that early stage I was content on getting a few race laps under me. The other 1200 was not and lined Kevin up down the inside into the Dipper ! I could not believe what I was seeing and dived to the right under hard brakes waiting for the carnage. Thankfully it did not eventuate as at the last minute Kevin caught sight of what was happening out of the corner of his eye and dived to the right to live another day. Shortly after that there was a bingle on the exit to Murray’s. After 2 laps under safety car we were set to race when one of the front runners check braked the field heading back onto Pit Straight causing at least 2 more cars to spin out of contention and leave the safety car out for another lap. The sprint for the finish had me battling with Kevin. I lined him up through the Elbow and tagged his slipstream down Conrod. I pulled out from behind him and had just enough to pull in front of him by the Chase. He dropped in behind me as we headed out of the Chase and down to Murray’s for the run home. I got him across the line, but another 10 or so metres and it would have been his. Jez to his credit finished in 26th position after being tagged from behind. So ended the first race day at the Mountain. I was exhausted but the fact I’d stuffed the start played heavy on my mind and I wasn’t so sure the change of main jet was warranted, however I did know I was out to make amends on Saturday. Another early start. The weather had been threatening all weekend but today looked as though the clouds could bucket down at various times throughout the day. A wet Bathurst could have more drama’s than an episode of Home and Away and Grant Denyer who was wandering the pits would agree with me on that. The pit facilities were good. We were positioned over at the base of a bank leading up to the camping grounds. They had set up a “Team Cafeteria” in some corporate suites above pit lane. The food was pretty expensive but it was a great spot to watch the finish of the 12-hour as it was licenced! 9am was Race 2 start time. There had been a couple of light showers but the circuit was dry by the time we got out. This time I had the inside run into Hell’s from position 45 having finished 4th in the 1200’s. This time I picked up 2nd gear and a few positions before turn 1. Slipping around Kevin and using him as a buffer between some other 1200’s, I was soon having a great battle with Bruce Pearce from NSW for 1st position in the 1200’s. We ended up on our own and provided the race continued without incident, our race would come down to the last lap. I had noticed in footage from 99 that due to the length of Conrod to jump too early on a slip may return the favour to the person you passed. I also wondered if there was enough track left for a slip from the Chase down into Murray’s. The only way to find out was to test the water. I slipped out from behind Bruce down Conrod. He followed me through the Chase and back onto Pit Straight, although he did crossover through Murray’s to come up the inside of me on the straight. I let him past and gambled on a last lap pass down Conrod. By this time I was going the fastest I have ever been in a Formula Vee. I was pushing over 6000rpms down Conrod and by the Chase was finding the car was lifting and lightly skating or dancing. Turning into the Chase at that speed was really a mind over matter thing. It took me until the first race to keep the foot buried into the throttle and even then I had to tell myself to do it. Once you’ve got over that initial fear, you would not let yourself lift the again – just an absolute treat.

Jez utilising a ‘short cut’ manouvre!

The Dipper too is an awesome corner. Line it up and power through and there is no corner like it anywhere else in Australia if not the world. One however that demands respect and I’m sure if you ever got too familiar it would bite. On the second last lap heading down the Mountain I thought the weekend was over as Bruce got sideways right in front of me through the Dipper. One minute I was on his gearbox and next thing I had him lined up in a perfect T-Bone. To his credit and with great skill Bruce pulled it back and we continued. Knowing I had the better gearbox for the run down Conrod I gave Bruce a bit of space out of the Elbow. The tow worked a treat and I got a great launch past him about three quarters of the way down towards the Chase. I held my line through the Chase and as I headed down under the GMC Bridge realised I had a couple of car lengths on Bruce. The run out of Murray’s and to the finish line was an outstanding moment, one that I could not let past without a few victory punches to the air. Albeit 1200 Formula Vees I had won a race at Bathurst ! I was ready to put the car on the trailer and head for home having achieved something I had not even dreamed about. Jez on the other hand had taken another shunt from behind. This time heading down into the Esses which speared him into one of the only sand traps on the Mountain. He continued to circulate but finished well down. Damage to a rear trailing arm was soon replaced and all checked out ready for the final race. The main jet had worked and stayed in for the final race. Unfortunately finishing 42nd meant I was again on the outside run for turn 1. Off the start I worked my way across but not far enough and ended up squeezed in the middle and swamped heading up Mountain Straight. I was able to catch onto Luke Warner another front running 1200 from NSW and my old sparring partner Bruce Pearce. Although coming down Conrod Kevin in the 1600 popped into the picture. I was able to hold him at bay and just as he was attempting to pass heading up Mountain Straight for the second time the yellow flags and safety car forced him to fall in behind. Two cars had come to grief through Griffin’s and Jon Gaspero from Victoria now found himself upside down against the wall. We could see on the safety car laps that Jon was OK. With 6 lap races any safety car laps puts a dent into the racing. The safety car however was no slouch and rumoured to be running 180kph down Conrod. Just a bit quicker than ours at Wanneroo. After 3 laps as we were ready to go green, a check brake at the front once again cause a domino effect and again another 2 cars speared off. Under another safety car lap it was clear we were going to have a last lap sprint to the finish. On the green flag there was a train of about 8 of us. A mix of 1600’s & 1200’s. Thankfully the three 1200’s were all together for a battle to the finish. I had developed a bad bump steer and it appeared the front shockies had let go. This caused me additional woes together with another brake check as we headed into Forrest Elbow for the last time. Luke and Bruce slipped away as my back end stepped out. I powered out of the Elbow and chased them for all it was worth. When the valves started to bounce in third I wondered if it was worth it. I picked up their slip but stayed behind in hope of getting a good run at them out of the Chase. Luke got the better run out of the Chase while Bruce protected his line into Murray’s. I went to the outside but didn’t go on with it and was happy to pick up a 3rd. The 3rd gave me an outright finish of 39th. Jez charged his way from the back of the field up to 26th and had a far better race with no incidents. The racing side of the weekend was now over and it was time to celebrate ! Having started with lap times of 3:26 I finished with a flat 3:00 and picked up a 1st and 3rd in what could very well be the last time 1200 Formula Vees race at Mt Panorama. The 1600 category is certainly dominating in the East and with the possibility of supporting the 2009 A1 GP and the 2009 BMF again I expect the limited grid opportunities will be filled by 1600’s alone. It’s hard to put into words just how good it was. If it’s Football, it’s the MCG. If it’s Cricket, it’s the SCG but for Motor Sport there is nowhere else but Bathurst! You have to do it at least once.

Formula Ford - Hollie Tucker

Currently sitting eighth in the West Australian Formula Ford Championship. A staggering statistic on it’s own, is it not … But consider this – Tucker is eighth in the WA Formula Ford standings after just two race meetings. Not two race meetings this year; two race meetings ever. And that includes karting, which, it should be noted Tucker never did. Then throw in the fact that Hollie Tucker is, quite obviously, a girl. Eighth today, but with some more experience, the sky is the limit for this flat-out female. And experience won’t be an issue. Tucker is driving for Brett Lupton’s Fastlane Racing Drivers School, former home to drivers such as reigning V8 Supercar Champion Garth Tander. “I’ve always been interested in motorsport,” she says. “I grew up on a farm so I’ve done some trail riding and stuff, so I’ve always loved cars and motorbikes and things like that. So [the desire] has always been there, but I never thought that I’d pursue it. “It’s come as a complete surprise. I started in motor racing not even a year ago, just doing a drive day with Fastlane, so it’s come around very quickly. “So I am surprised, because I figured this year would just be a learning year and I’d take it very slowly, but it’s come along quickly.” But while she’s happy beating the boys, Tucker is keen to not be the only girl on-track. “It’s always hard playing in a boy’s world, but I guess I have a different spin on it. My ego isn’t as big (laughs). Maybe I’m a bit more level-headed if that’s not too sexist … “I really like it, but there does need to be more girls. We need to show the boys how it is done. “All my friends are just interested in coming down and watching, I can’t recruit any of them onto the other side of the fence which is a shame. But, I’m out there to find some more.”

SOARING AWAY

Story : Luke Nieuwhof Photos : Brian White

From Street To Strip - Who needs to run the gauntlet of anti-hoon legislation when you can take your daily driver from the supermarket to the racetrack then back home! We look at two examples from mild to wild. This is a slightly unusual article for me to write, given your editor Brian White asked me: “How about an article on your car?” Well, let’s give it a go. This is my 1991 Toyota Soarer. They were never sold in Australia and thus all the cars of this type you see on our roads have been imported at one time or another by the owner or through a dealer. They came with three engine options: a naturally aspirated three litre straight six for economy-minded buyers, a naturally aspirated four litre V8 for those who wanted the silky smooth luxury versions and lastly the twin turbocharged 2.5 litre straight six as found here for buyers wanting some oomph. Despite being relatively heavy cars with more of an emphasis on luxury they were still very quick, doing 14.0sec. for the quarter mile off the factory floor in four speed automatic form, slightly quicker again for the five

speed manuals. It was the pace, comfort and economy of a turbocharged car that appealed to me when buying the Soarer and is something I haven’t regretted since. This car has to be everything to me. It has to be a race car, a getting to work car, a going on holidays car. That’s why the interior hasn’t been stripped out to lighten things up, I like having the comfort of electric seats, climate control and a decent sound system. Also that’s why I’m lucky you can’t see too close in on these photos, you might see the bug splatters I couldn’t get off the front, or that bird that may or may not still be in the undertray or the numerous scrapes and paint left by other cars at shopping centres. It’s all part of it being a street car. Only recently I’ve stepped it up to go Super Street racing at Perth Motorplex. Super Street is the entry level category at their big national open events and as the name would

hint, it is aimed primarily at street cars though there are plenty of race cars too. The only real requirement is that you have to dial in between 11.00 and 12.99. The racing is tough too, make no mistake. Good reaction times and runs close to your dial in are needed.

lot quicker. This provides good gains to quarter mile times given the Soarer transmission is designed for softer shifts due to its luxury car origins. A Greddy Profec B Spec II boost controller also went on along with an Apexi SAFC to tune the car with and it made a good 252 horsepower at the rear wheels.

It’s been a gradual path I’ve taken with the car, running that constant line between keeping it practical for the street but making it faster at the same time. I ran it fairly stock for a while, with times in the 14sec. region, and enjoyed success in my first full season of Fast Friday racing at the Motorplex, winning the 2005-2006 championship in Sports Compact. During the off season there were a few modifications. In went an MV Automatics shift kit, which made the shifts a

Another Fast Friday season and I got enough wins to get the championship again, which was very satisfying and the Soarer did me well at the Sport Compact Drag Warz too with a win there. Somewhere in the months following I decided Super Street would be good fun. Eventually I got my butt into gear and got Butler Built to do the exhaust on the car and also bought some Mickey Thompson ET Street drag tyres

It was with this combination that the car ran 12.91sec. at its first Super Street outing on March 15 this year. I even made it through my first round in a very tight race with Dom Dercole, but unfortunately Darren Bakranich defeated me in the second round when I “broke out” (went under my dial in, an instant disqualification). Racing at the Motorplex is certainly a buzz, even more so at these big events. It’s a great excitement level you reach. Racing on the streets has no comparison to racing on the track. The track is more exciting, safer and you don’t have to worry about the police. For the off season there is a Greddy M Spec intercooler waiting to go on to the car as well as aftermarket “dump pipes”, which replace the restrictive factory pipe between the turbos and the rest of the exhaust.

That will probably be it for this car, because the fact is it just can’t be too extreme. It’s far more a daily driver than a race car and with only one parking bay at my apartment, that’s the way it has to stay. Hopefully this also explains that we’re car nuts here at Performance Street Car too. Brian owns an interesting Kombi, though it may not quite come under “performance” quite so much. Unless he does one of those much talked about Subaru WRX motor conversions. (Ed: Sadly the VW’s 40 horsepower doesn’t qualify it as ‘performance’ car and the closest it will get to the drag strip is the carpark, but face it Luke, VW’s are cool man! Peace.) If you have an interesting performance street car, let us know. We’d love to feature it. Simply email specs and a few snapshot photos to brian@circlework.com.au (.)

american fury There was a brief but glorious time in American history when free rein was given to automobile designers. No oil crisis, no greenhouse concerns – it was almost a free for all. The quickest of the rockets produced from the factory in the golden age of the muscle car were the Plymouth Super Stocks, radical machines that were built in limited numbers with the quarter mile in mind. Running 12 second times off the factory floor, they would still embarrass modern powerhouses such as the Dodge Viper and were great for scaring old people on the sidewalks. One of the cars made it out to Australia and eventually it would end up in the hands of Al James who is still racing the car to this day as you see in these pages. His father Doug James bought it from another racer in the 1970s and campaigned it with some success before having to sell his pride and joy in 1976. Al became interested in the car and went after the man Doug sold it to, finding that he still had it stowed away in the shed! A deal was done and the car was back in

Story : Luke Nieuwhof Photos : Brian White

James family hands, ready for a return to the strip – where it belongs. “By 1998 we had it back and started the restoration,” he said. “In 2001 we got it to the track, since then we have learnt a heap and continued to improve, the latest paint job is back to its factory colour ‘coppertone’ after taking it back to bare metal.” The engine is now 100 cubic inches bigger than its factory specifications at 526ci. The parts list for those

at home is a 440 block stroked out, a 730 lift Bullet roller cam, Indy aluminium heads, Comp roller lifters, Crane roller rockers, Indy intake, BG 1100cfm carburettor and just to makes things interesting a NOS nitrous plate. The team has been slowly learning how to tune a nitrous assisted engine and has so far pushed the big Plymouth to a 9.59 at 139mph. The transmission is looked after by Colin at Transfix Automatics in Rockingham. It is a 727 that has been reverse patterned and manualised to better suit the drag strip. The front wheels are 15 x 4.5 inch American Racing Torque Thrusts with Hoosier front runner tyres, which minimise resistance on the track and make for more direct steering. The rear wheels are 15 x 14 Ian Splatts with massive 15x14x32 Hoosier drag slicks to make sure all the power can get to the ground.

“It is also a good feeling driving something that no one else is driving, it is the only one in Australia.” The scary thing about James’s ride is that is still bordering on street legal if not for the wheel tubs, which are basically customised wheel wells to allow bigger tyres to be fitted. “The wheel tubs are the only thing that would stop this car from being called a street car,” he said. “Back in their day these cars had the twin carbs on a big block motor so it would be legal for it on the street now.” James wanted to put in a big thank you to Transfix Automatics, Yunderup Panel and Paint, Roberts Civil and his crew Shane Page and Pete Henderson.

The car still runs the 1963 drum brakes which made slowing down from nigh on 225kmh a bit hairy so James has fitted a Simpson parachute as well to make things come to a stop in a big hurry. “To sit in a big heavy Yank tank that lifts the front wheels off the ground (when it launches) is a great feeling,” he said. “It was a little unstable in the braking area at 140 mph but now a lot better with a parachute.

We chat to West Aussie celebs about their rides!

This edition: ‘Ash’ from Big Brother 2006 Circlework: So your real name is Michael. Michael: Yeah there were two of us with the same name going in to the house so we went by our middle names instead. Circlework: The old turkey slapping event went pear-shaped. Personally I reckon you were ripped off mate. Did you get up to much afterwards? Michael: After it all happened and me and John got kicked out - still did the nightclub tours all around Australia. Circlework: How were people’s reactions? Michael: Had mixed reactions. About 97% of people were really supportive and told us we were good blokes and didn’t deserve to be kicked out. Then there was the occassional one that called us dickheads but they didn’t know the full story. Circlework: So tell us about the Holden. Michael: I needed a work ute and found this one advertised for a good price. This is when I was about 18 or 19. Drove it around stock as a rock for a couple of years then started adding stuff to it. After a while it became impractical to use every day. Circlework: So what’s the basics of it? Michael: LS1 with full cam, valve spring retainers, over the radiator cold air intake...all up it’s 550 brake horsepower at the flywheel. 400 hp at the rear tyres. Circlework: It’s certainly cool. Any more plans for it or have you maxed out? Michael: Still got heaps to do to this one - bigger and better. Larger rims, either a twin turbo or supercharger on this motor as I’ve dropped about ten grand already on it (the motor) with the cam etc. There’s heaps more stuff I want to do to it. Depends on how much money I can save up to spend on it! Circlework: Thanks for your time Michael. Good luck with it and we’ll see it in print soon in Street Machine too.

Smokefree Nightmasters HQ Holden racer Peter Nicholson gives us a wrap up of his first race of the year.

This weekend saw the first meeting of the West Australian Sporting Car clubs season. The SmokeFree WA Night Masters was a three race meeting for the HQ Holdens and my first competitive race. It was a big job getting the car ready for the first race, but at least we had a good car with minimal work required. A few minor issues arising from the pre-season audit, combined with a hectic February travel schedule (Away for three weeks out of four) made for some late nights leading up to the meeting. Many thanks to Dave Smith and the boys at Kennards in Balcatta, Joe from Paint West Centre in Osborne Park and Yus from Protec Graffix in Osborne Park for helping me to get the car over the line in time. Thanks also to Campbell, who welded in the Drivers side Intrusion bar on Saturday morning before the race. I hope not to need it, but it is nice to know it is there. Ready to race So, lunchtime Friday, I slipped away early from work to collect all the bits I needed, pick up the trailer (Thanks again Dave) and the car and head up to the track for my last practice prior to the race. As I arrived at Barbagallo, It was pouring rain… The nervous energy to get out on the track was now fighting with the fear of putting the car into the wall before the first race. The rain cleared, so the car came off the trailer. Out on the track something didn’t feel right… I’d had the steering wheel off, and hadn’t re-aligned it properly so it wasn’t straight… most of the issues were in my head, but after a single lap I was back in the paddock, fixing the steering wheel and making sure everything was ok… Right - now I’m ready… lets go. No – they have put the open wheelers on again, it is 20 to 4 and the track shuts at four.. bugger. 3:45 and the

track is open to closed wheelers again. Right, lets go… Car felt good, everything going well - lets push a little harder, mmm that feels nice, starting to calm down now; push a bit harder…. Do I really need to say what happens next? Just braking into C-Red corner, no-one within cooee, and I’ve locked it up, spinning, ‘Wheres the wall??’ – no its ok, I am away from it. . . Shit! The engines stopped… what happened?? Ok, so now I am parked alongside and perpendicular to the track… no problems… start button is just here..I will just restart and be away - nothing.. Damn!!.. ignition on – check; kill switch on… where has the kill switch gone?? I had managed to smash the kill switch while trying to grab first, and wasn’t going anywhere. Got the car towed back, bypassed the kill switch and started up to go back out as the clock struck 4 and the tuning day was over. I managed to complete somewhere between 3 and 5 laps for my trouble. Luckily I had a spare kill switch, so there wasn’t too much work needed to get the car back together for Saturday. A very sobering afternoon, and a bit of reality check to the confidence. Billy came over on Friday Night, and by about midnight we had done as much as we could until the morning Saturday morning, Oil change, Intrusion bar installed and we were ready to go. Got to the track feeling late and unorganised. If you ever want to get into Motorsport I don’t think you could go past starting with HQs in Perth. Everyone associated with the club went out of their way to not only make me feel welcome, but to show me exactly what to do and how to do it. Special thanks to Grant Howlett, Mick Woodbridge, Fogz and Tracy, Rod Jenzen and Howard Crump for all of the assistance. Also

to Peter Cope for sorting me out a carport, and to all of the guys and girls, it was wonderful to be made to feel so welcome and to know that I could turn to anybody and receive assistance and advice. Thanks!

Race 3 – Last Lap, Corner 1 and Kneafsey finally sneaks under me

The results from race 1 and 2 put me in 13th on the grid for race 3. Out of a field of 18, I was happy. I was over the moon with where I had Qualifying came and felt fantastic, I was running ended up. Race 3 was a hoot again with a bit well, and pushing up against the cars in front, I of passing going on. I had a fantastic dice with actually backed off on a lap to get some room Chis Kneafsey for quite a few laps. Chris took me for a faster lap on the next one.. Of course the ‘faster‘ lap turned out to be my slowest qualifying lap, but I came in feeling pretty good. That lasted until the times were posted and I had qualified last… how did that happen? I was smoking!! … Another little reality check - I qualified in 1.06.50, 3.5 seconds behind pole and 0.6 behind second last. Race 2 - Come the first race and nerves were really starting to set in. I knew that the best way was to follow Greenys (the cars previous owner) advice and just keep it straight and make sure I finished 3 races, but I was worried that the adrenaline would kick in and I would be pushing too hard. The red lights went out and we were on. I managed to hold second last after a fun tussle with Myrv Nabbs, and with 1 car not starting, and 3 not finishing, I ended up 15th. My best lap was 1.05.79. I was happy to finish. I was really happy with the tussle with Myrv and I was Stoked to have not bent the car. Race 2 and we have a reverse Grid. Second last in race 1 put me on the front row, and the pole sitter was out for the rest of the day, so I was there on my own. Red lights out and we were off, Myrv and I two abreast through turn 1, but I managed to slip my nose in front by the hairpin and finished lap 1 still at the front of the pack.. That was a highlight for me. The next few laps saw me overtaken a few times before a safety car and a frenetic last lap in which I lost a few more places. Again though, I brought the car home with a respectable result and no new panelwork, so I was over the moon. Coming back into the shed, and having all the guys slapping my back was fantastic. Thanks for that, you may not realise how much it meant – it was a very special moment for me. Thank You Mandy, Tanika, Jack, Billy, Ken and Brent. I ended up in 12th with a best lap of 1.06.8.

coming into the last lap after about four laps of close racing. Another Highlight. I ended up 15th in the third race, which I was happy with, but again Totally stoked that I had come home after 4 sessions (Qualifying and 3 races) without bending the car, running off the track, or making a total twat of myself (I think). My best time in Race 3 was 1.05.85. In all I had a great day out, and would like to thank again all of those who helped make it possible. I ended up 13th on Points out of a field of 20, which I am very happy with. Looking forward to the next race in April, hopefully I can bring my times down a bit before then.

Yamaha Racing Joins The Fight Against Breast Cancer Yamaha Racing’s support of emerging motorcycle riders has extended to the GYTR FZ6 Cup with the manufacturer today announcing they will sponsor female rider, Amy O’Mara who will compete at each round of the championship on a bike which has been designed to raise awareness for the National Breast Cancer Foundation. O’Mara will join Yamaha Racing as a factory supported rider with her racing bike to feature the distinctive pink which has become synonymous with the fight to find a cure for breast cancer. At each round of the 2008 GYTR FZ6 Cup individuals will be able to make cash donations to the National Breast Cancer Foundation with special pink helmet collection tins that will travel across Australia for each round of the series. After competing in various club and state competitions, O’Mara is looking forward to developing her racing career alongside her passion for the real-estate industry which she joined after being involved in marketing and graphic design. “After watching a group of ladies riding one day I thought that racing was something which I could definitely do and with that I brought my first bike and started practicing. It is my goal to one day make the step up to the Supersport category and be a real contender with all the boys,” O’Mara said. “It is a real honour to be racing with the support of Yamaha Motor Australia and I know the pink bike is going to encourage people to donate to the NBCF and increase their awareness of the disease which affects many Australian women. “I think breast cancer is something that most females think will not affect them especially not until they are older but it is not the case. I’ve experienced first hand friends and family who have been touched by the disease and at each round of the series we will be inviting breast cancer sufferers and their families to attend the event as a chance to get away from it all for a few hours.” Yamaha Australian Motorsport Coordinator, Cheryl Muldoon said the manufacturer was proud to sponsor O’Mara. “Encouraging and supporting females in our sport has long been part of Yamaha Motorsport’s Plan. We are delighted to have a talented female road racer such as Amy join our factory team lineup for 2008. Yamaha is proud to be in support female racers at a factory level across a number of motorcycling disciplines including motocross, enduro and it is great to now complement this with road racing as well,” Muldoon said. “Amy will be hard to miss this year on her pink GYTR FZ6 Cup race bike and this will certainly help our cause to create awareness around breast cancer and raise funds towards the National Breast Cancer Foundation through her racing efforts. “A close friend of my own recently encountered the disease and we learnt that while a cure is not yet know, breast cancer awareness, early detection and treatments means that more women are surviving the disease than ever before. It seemed fitting to organise a far reaching national activity which assists the National Breast Cancer Foundation in creating greater awareness around the disease.”

Breast cancer is one of the most common causes of cancer-related death in Australia with 700 women under the age of 40 diagnosed with the disease each year. Yamaha’s support of O’Mara is in addition to their sponsorship of the GYTR FZ6 Cup which will be a support category at all rounds of the 2008 Australian Superbike Championship. Huge Honda Backed WA Trail Bike Event Set For May Honda Australia is very pleased to announce that they have signed on as naming right’s sponsor for one of Western Australia’s biggest enduro events of the year. The “Honda Adventure Rally” will be hosted once again by the Trail & Enduro Motorcycle Club of Western Australia at Mornington Mills, near Harvey about 1-1/2 hours south of Perth. The Rally traditionally attracts up to 400 participants, and is a non-competitive trail ride for all levels of riders. In a first for the event, Honda will also be providing a grand prize giveaway of a brand new CRF230F to one lucky winner. One of the event organisers, Baden Barker said the Club is looking forward to hosting their biggest rally yet on the weekend of May 24/25. “Although this is the 22nd year of the event, this is the first time we have had the CRF230F to give away as the major prize so a big thank you to Honda for that.” “There will also be plenty of other goodies for the entrants. We normally have a foot race to grab a Nolan helmet, and again this year we will give away a brand new Pilot air compressor valued at over $800. Each rider will also receive a commemorative tee shirt and badge,” Baden said.

This year, the event will include two loops of approximately 70 kms each, with a lunch break back at the start point. The ride itself will take place on the Sunday with an optional riding workshop to also be presented on Saturday 24th May. “The venue is the Police & Citizens Youth Club Adventure Camp located at Mornington Mills which is an old sawmilling town site,” Barker noted. “The area has a lot of interesting history, and the ride passes predominantly along old rail forms and logging tracks used in the early 1900’s.” Camping and food will be available at the venue. Contact details and further information is available at: www trailandenduro.com.au. Entry forms are also available at all good motorcycle and accessory shops.

8 Days 3 Race Events 10 Podiums - by Peter Strickland - Wellard Yamaha Just 6 days after claiming four podium positions on the sandy circuit of Pinjar Park the Wellard Yamaha Junior Development Team was back at Wanneroo for the first one of two State rounds at the end of March. This was the first time we have encountered this format and the fact they were at the two toughest sand tracks we have would really test the metal of our riders. Jayden Rykers (Mandurah City Yamaha) and Kyle Webster (North City Yamaha) are both firmly focused on winning the 85cc Small Wheel Championship this year and though they are team mates there was no quarter given in their quest for the top step of the podium in any of the moto’s. After great starts, Kyle and Jayden battled out for front position in the first two races building the excitement for the last. In moto three, again they were running wheel to wheel at the font of the pack when a small error by Jayden washed out his front wheel and he dropped his bike. In the short time he took to remount one rider slipped by pushing him back to third. Meanwhile Kyle was making the most of his team mate’s dilemma and was riding the wheels off his YZ 85 to increase his lead. Jayden was closing fast on second place but laps ran out before he could achieve his goal. Kyle had garnished enough points to claim top spot on the podium and Jayden still had enough points to claim second outright. Daniel Strickland (Five Star Yamaha) put on an awesome display of sand riding on his 250F considering it was only his third meeting on the bike. With new suspension settings learned from the week before Daniel gated perfectly all day and even grabbing a big holeshot in race two. The young charger never put a wheel wrong all day and though one of the newest and least experienced in the Fourstroke field he looked like a seasoned pro. Three solid 3rd place finishes enabled Daniel to claim 3rd spot on the rostrum. “I found a new a new way of getting around the corners on the 250F and because it is so different from the two stroke it just took a little while to work it out” “But I think I have it sorted now so I will just have to wait and see” commented Daniel about his form on the day. Satellite rider Vince Van Leeuwen (Five Star Yamaha) also wanted to get in on the action of the main team. Vince is a good sand rider from Bunbury who has come on board this year after a long lay off through injury last season. He is still finding his feet in the 125cc class since joining the Satellite team and is slowly getting back the speed that lurks inside. Three consistent rides saw him pilot his YZ 125 to the team’s fourth podium position for the weekend. “The best thing about our 2008 team is the depth we have. It extends right through to our satellite team” Stated team Manager Peter Strickland. “Once Vince builds his confidence and regains his speed he and Craig Bolton will add another string to our already powerful bow” When we left Wanneroo the team was in an extremely healthy position in the championship with Kyle Webster and Jayden Rykers 1st and 2nd for the 85cc, Vince Van Leeuwen 3rd in the 125cc and Daniel Strickland third in the 250F. Craig Bolton had a few silly crashes over the day but was in the top five in the 125cc as well. With just over 24 hours rest the team headed for Coastal Park in Henderson. Another sandy circuit that is not very forgiving to those who make mistakes.

Kyle Webster (North City Yamaha) came into this second State round leading the championship, but as with racing it throws you a curve ball every now and then. Kyle’s bike developed a misfire on the line just before race one and when the gate dropped the gremlins decided he was going nowhere unfortunately resulting in a DNF in race one. Though disappointed Kyle was only concerned about getting things fixed for the next race. Jayden Rykers (Mandurah City Yamaha) by this time had roosted his way to the front of the field and won the race convincingly stamping his authority firmly on the day. Races two and three saw Kyle and Jayden banging bars again in more close racing. They swapped the lead several times giving the announcer plenty to tell the fans. This time at days end it would be Jayden standing on the top step of the podium and taking the lead in the championship while Kyle’s valiant efforts in winning the last two moto’s were over shadowed by his DNF in race one. “Things are never as bad as they seem” explained team manager Peter Strickland “Kyle had a few points up his sleeve and has only dropped back to second in the championship and Wellard Yamaha riders are still 1st and 2nd in the Championship so it is all good” 250F pilot Daniel Strickland had plenty of sweet and sour for the day in his races as well. He picked up right where he left off at Pinjar Park. Daniel’s starts were not quite as good as they were at Wanneroo but his riding is just getting better and better every lap. It all nearly came undone in the first race when duelling for third he encountered a slower ride while overtaking on a jump. The rider he was duelling with changed lines when Daniel was in mid air and with nowhere to go he crash heavily into the rider. A little shaken he remounted and took a while to get his bike going but was able to complete the race. Even with this set back he still maintains third outright in the championship. Satellite rider Craig Bolton was in fine form at Coastal’s and had the wick wound up on his YZ 125cc machine. Craig was disappointed with his first round ride and set about making things right. Some brilliant starts and good riding saw him podium in third place by days end. This moved him into third place knocking team mate Vince Van Leeuwen out of third in the Championship. Two sand tracks in one weekend was pretty tough but it is a great way to open our account. We now have a small break before heading into some hardpack gravel riding for the next three rounds.

MCRC ROUND 1 REPORT - 26th and 27th April 2008 IT WAS ACTION PLUS for Round 1 of the Rilusi Motorcycles WA State Road Racing Championships at Barbagallo Raceway on the weekend. The two day meeting saw close exciting racing and another new Superbike local lap record. Several riders and machines came to grief, but we are glad to report no major casualties, though lots of bike repairs needed before Round 2 (May 18th) . Saturday saw qualifying action with Superbike rider Ben Stronach (Drilling & Grouting/Lloyd Chapman Suzuki) setting the scene braking his own lap record for the 2nd time in a month. Starting from pole position with a 0:56.6390 in qualifying he officially recorded a 56.8150 in Race 1 and then went on to do a 0:56.8140 in Race 2, taking a commanding lead in all three races to take out a perfect score of all three race wins on the day. 2007 reigning State Champion Matt Battista (BHS Engineering R1) was riding hard and fast getting into the 57 sec.’s but had no answer for Stronach, having to settle for three 2nd placings. Chris Galbraith (Weld West Suzuki) and Mark Schnierer had some close duals with Rilusi Motorcycles rider Schnierer grabbing the third placing in race 1 , but it was

Galbraith who took the next two third placings. Ben Henry (Allect Steelblue R1) , Jamie Boland (Savage Suzuki) and Kevin Boulton (Rick Gill Honda) also rode challenging races to take out a place in the top 7. Albany based Shane Martin was the best of the C grade Superbikes on the day coming in 9th overall. Points standings Steelblue Superbikes after round 1 : B Stronach 75pts, M Battista 60, C Galbraith 53, M Schnierer 50, B Henry 48, J Boland 47, K Boulton 41, P Grasser 40, S Martin 33, L Maclou 31. In the BHS Engineering Supersport Championship it was Adam Senior who made a strong start to the season by taking all three race wins from Wil Hough (Causeway Kawasaki) who scored two 2nd’s and a 3rd with new BHS ARacing team member Tommy Hatton grabbing 2nd overall in race 2 and two 3rds placing him just two points behind Hough. Bunbury based Josh Trigwell had a slow start to the weekend managing a only an 8th in Saturday’s race but came back on Sunday to take out two 4ths and fourth overall in the Championship tied with C grader Jason Cawthorne (Comleck Yamaha) placing 5th overall. Ex motocrosser Jarrod Hockley have his first season of road racing rode well to come in 8th overall . West Coast Honda Superstock 600cc racing was fierce and competitive with Kalgoorlie based Chris Gilmore (Sportspower Yamaha) taking the first race win on Saturday from Ray Anset (CCS Suzuki) with Prestige Honda’s Andrew Skinner coming in 3rd, but Sunday saw Anset fired up taking both class wins from Gilmore, Skinner 3rd, Gavin Cunningham fourth overall

from Martin Mott and Peter Stirrat. The Ultra Fast Karts Sidecar State Championships produced some great three wheeled action with brothers Darren and Neal Walker reigning supreme taking all three race wins from Lindsay and Anthony Fagan . Warren Thompson and Justin Winchester (Ultra Fast Karts ) grabbed a 2nd in race one from Fagan and finished 3rd in the remaining two races. Boddington team Rob Hair and Chris Burrows had a lucky escape following a spectacular crash. With a flat rear tyre coming down the back straight into Turn 7 they have lost control and ended up infield. Both driver and passenger suffered no major injuries and should return for round 2. National News V8 SUPERCARS - STOLEN MURPHY HELMET RECOVERED An anonymous tip has led to the recovery of two of V8 Supercar driver Greg Murphy’s racing helmets and Rick Kelly’s electronic purpose built steering wheel in Melbourne. The three pieces, worth more than $30,000 in total, were stolen from Avalon Airport prior to the airlift of the V8 Supercar Championship Series to the Hamilton 400 in New Zealand last weekend. Police followed a tip which led to a Melbourne man, alleged to be an airport worker, and the recovery of all stolen items. Murphy, a New Zealand sporting great, was still able to compete despite the loss of his signature helmets but it was a sour homecoming when a troubled weekend ended with 27th place. Murphy had a replacement helmet flown from Australia. Kelly on the other hand took the V8 Supercar Championship Series lead with his fourth placing overall DRAG RACING - PAC PERFORMANCE PACK MORE MUSCLE WITH NEW CAR Australia’s most successful Sport Compact Drag Racing team, Pac Performance has taken delivery of one of the world’s most advanced drag racing chassis to help the team continue their reign at the top. The PAC MX 6 has been one of the most iconic Sport Compact cars in Australian Drag Racing history and after six years of competitive racing, the MX6 will be retired in favour of the new Mazda 6. Team Principal, Rocky Rehayem explained, “With the influx of imported US built chassis, we needed to purchase a car that could compete on a level playing field with the rest.” The new chassis will certainly be up to the task with the new car coming from the RJ Race Cars factory. “The chassis is the factory MOPAR car driven by Allen Johnson last year, so it certainly has the credentials. AJ and his team have been extremely helpful in the purchase process and we are very happy with our new toy,” said the obviously excited Sydney-sider. The new chassis is now in the process of being re-bodied as a Mazda 6 for use in Australian Sport Compact competition. “With talks of a possible premier Sport Compact class, in the future, we need to be ready if it is to happen, “we don’t want to play catch up,” said Rocky. Although Pac Performance is the only Sport Compact team to win in the tough Group 2 Competition area, they plan on taking their performance to an even higher level. “There has been a lot of R&D and data taken over the past six years with the MX6 and we feel that it has helped us achieve so

much to this stage. But the new car has run as fast as 6.5-seconds in the US and we are looking for those sorts of numbers in the long term,” Rehayem said with a smile. But that’s not to say the team is finished with the MX6, “After numerous Sport Compact Group event wins and records, six back to back national records in PRO RWD, and two ANDRA Championships under its belt, it will always have a special place in the team.” The MX 6 will finish off the current Toyo Tires Sport Compact Group Championship with the backing of Garrett Turbochargers, Castrol EDGE and Turbosmart. Pac will also continue to run the MX6 at selected meetings, with both cars racing side by side, a real possibility. With the Mazda 6 set for its race debut in the not too distant future, the team says to “Watch this space ‘piston boys’, we’re coming to get you!” OFF ROAD - THE HEART OF VICTORIA PRIMED FOR OFFROAD RACING ACTION After an exciting season opening round of the 2008 Australian Offroad Racing Championship in Western Australia across Easter, the Indy cars of the desert return to the east coast to resume the battle for the championship in the heart of Victoria. The Donald 500 will be held over the weekend of May 2-4 in the country town of Donald, just 3 hours north west of Melbourne. The event will see the cream of Australian offroad racing at their best, with many new offroad race cars scheduled to make their 2008 A.O.R.C. debut against the established contenders. A new addition to the Championship in 2008, the Donald 500 is set to become one of the show pieces of the national offroad racing calendar, after several years of development as a state level event. Friday nights scrutineering at the recreational reserve is set to launch the event with a festival atmosphere. Fireworks, a night parachute display and a R.A.A.F. F-111 dump and burn are planned to entertain the crowd, as the competition vehicles are checked for compliance, then placed on display until 9pm. Making it an ideal night out for the whole family. The Event gets down to business on Saturday morning with the Donald Sprint starting at 9.15am. Providing an awesome opportunity to check out some of the worlds fastest V8 and turbo powered offroad race cars going head to head in a bid to secure pole position for the main race. After an aerial display by the Roulettes at 12 noon, the green flag will drop and the race cars will launch from the start line, for two laps around Lake Buloke. Overnight the trucks, buggies and 4WD’s will be serviced, before fronting the starter for another two laps at 9am on Sunday, and then a final one lap dash to the finish line commencing at 1pm. One of the highlights of the Donald 500 will be watching the battle develop between the huge V8 trucks and American built offroad buggies. 2007 Donald 500 winner, Greg Gartner is back to defend his title in the big Aussie built Ford Truck. However his task won’t be simple, with the current Australian Champion Hayden Bentley and three former Australian Champs, Rentsch, Burrows and Rose all looking for the outright win. With the first round in W.A. running down to the wire, the Donald 500 is primed for a repeat performance.

DRAG RACING - BISHOP MAKES A SPEEDY COMEBACK AT WILLOWBANK RACEWAY Stuart Bishop has enjoyed a successful return to the drag strip at this weekend’s Castrol EDGE Tin Top Titles at Willowbank Raceway, setting the third fastest Australian speed record on his way to a semi-finals berth. The world’s fastest jeweller set down the third fastest official speed (set at an official ANDRA event) by a Doorslammer in Australia ever with a 246.04mph (393.66kmh) pass in his quarter-final run against Brett Stevens on his way to a semi-final berth with Sean Mifsud – the event winner. “It is great to be back in the driver’s seat this weekend,” said Bishop. “In my last pass, after running the speed in the quarter-final we tried to put a little bit more into the car to try and make the mile (speed) record where we should have just left it alone. “We were just five and half miles off the speed we needed so it was still a good result and I guess we will just keep on chipping away – we were happy to set the third fastest but we have our eye on going faster.” Incidentally, Bishop also holds the top spot in this record list, with Australia’s fastest pass of 246.30mph (394.08kmh), while Steve Stanic holds the second fastest at 246.21mph (393.93kmh). The unofficial fastest pass in Australia and the world is held by Peter Kapiris (247mph - 395.2kmh). Bishop lined up against Kapiris for an amazing side-by-side pass in last night’s qualifying action, setting his best qualifying result of the event with a 6.54s before this afternoon’s final qualifier saw him forced to contend the rest of the Castrol EDGE Tin Top Titles without third gear. “In the third qualifier this afternoon the tyre shake was so bad that it smashed the third gear, but we just did our best to work around it,” said Bishop. “Really, it is all credit to them (the Stuart Bishop Racing crew), they have really done a fantastic job in getting us out there and getting the results we did with the situation we were faced with.” Bishop had no shortage of nail-biting runs this weekend as the Castrol EDGE Tin Top Titles saw his category enjoy 16 car fields for the first time ever in Australian history. “I think we should keep the 16 car field idea - it is a great thing for Top Doorslammer, for the competitors, for the spectators and really it is a great concept all round,” said Bishop. “This weekend has certainly been very interesting and competitive with all the cars, but we still have a lot of work to do and we will just keep on working at it and look to get better as we go.” While the Castrol EDGE Tin Top Titles served as Bishop’s comeback event, it also acted as the final event from which images can be submitted for the second-running of the Wallace Bishop Jewellers National Photographic Competition. The Wallace Bishop Jewellers National Photographic Competition provides amateur and professional photographers the opportunity to win more than $20,000 in cash and prizes, simply by taking photos of the on and off track action at their local drag racing strip and entering them online

at www.stuartbishopracing.com.au “There are two categories available, one for Stuart Bishop Racing and one for drag racing across the board, and I sincerely hope that anyone interested in drag racing takes the chance to be involved and possibly win some great prizes,” said Bishop. The overall winning entry selected from all winners of each category will be awarded a half carat 50-point diamond. This is an identical diamond to the one encased in the roof of Stuart Bishop’s Diamond Doorslammer, which is situated somewhere among the configuration of 540 cubic zirconia. Five finalists in each category and subject area will be selected to be involved in a unique public art exhibition at the Ipswich Art Gallery. Images will be exhibited leading up to Willowbank Raceway’s 2008 Winternationals and extended through to the end of July. Full details of the Wallace Bishop photographic competition are available at www. stuartbishopracing.com.au as is all the new up to date information relevant to the SBR team and the ’67 Camaro Diamond Doorslammer. Entries officially close at 5.00pm Friday April 25th, 2008.

CIRCUIT - ONE MARQUE SERIES PLANNED FOR RADICAL SPORTSCARS Radical Australia has announced plans for a new, one marque series to be run in 2009 for Radical Sportscars. Since importing five Radical SR3s to Australia in February 2007 for use as track day cars, Radical Downunder Trackdays achieved prominence as the most exciting motorsport-based corporate entertainment event in the country. A group of it’s directors created Radical Australia in late 2007 and were appointed exclusive Australian distributors early this year, immediately importing a further five cars. The five 2008 model SR3s cars were unveiled at a launch in Sydney by the NSW Minister for State Development, Ian McDonald MLC, with the owners present to take possession of their cars. Mr. McDonald said that since the UK built Radicals were launched ten years ago, more then 300 models of varying types were now seen on racetracks around the world, with the one make Radical Cup series being conducted in eight countries. The Radical SR3 Sportscar has proved to be an excellent car for racing and track day tuition. The car is well-engineered, reliable, economic to run and easy to drive. The SR3 takes a Suzuki Powertec 1300cc four cylinder superbike engine, links it to a sequential six speed gear box all mounted on a high strength lightweight chassis to produce a staggering power to weight ratio of 348Kw per tonne. Radical Australia currently has twelve Radicals in Australia and expects to import a further eight by the end of this year. Radical Australia will begin the Radical Cup series early in 2009 and plans to make it an Australia wide event using motor racing tracks in all states. In addition to announcing plans for the Radical Cup series, Radical Australia also outlined their new ‘Arrive and Drive’ programme under which the company will maintain, house and transport any Radical sportscar for the owner. As part of their total approach to helping Radical owners the company has also announced the Radical RaceCraft programme which offers Radical owners a series of training modules designed to build their track skills and experience. The programme starts from the absolute basics of what sort of helmet to buy, where to get a race suit embroidered, who can design and paint the car, through to walking the track, setting up suspension systems and improving race starts. The Race Craft programme gives each driver a tuition logbook which instructors will update as drivers complete each component. As Radical Sportcars have two seats and helmet-to-helmet communication all this training happens driving on the track, not just in the pits or a classroom. In 2008 Radical Australia has booked twenty-eight track days at either Eastern Creek or Oran Park tracks in Sydney and eight of these days are for the exclusive use of Radical owners. Quit Targa West Western Australia’s most prestigious tarmac rally event, Quit Targa West, was officially launched on 16th April with a cocktail function held at West Australian Porsche dealership Chellingworth Motors. A crowd of just under 100 people, including competitors, sponsors and officials, celebrated the launch of the tarmac rally, with event organisers releasing much awaited information about the 2008 event. The 2008 Supplementary Regulations and Entry Forms are now available from the event website www.targawest.com.au Quit Targa West is now firmly established amongst the top rallies of its type in Australia and in 2008 it will run again on its traditional date in early September. Run along some of the best stretches of tarmac road in Western Australia, Quit Targa West competitors are given the chance to drive in some of the most beautiful parts of Perth’s surrounding Shires of Chittering, Toodyay, Kalamunda and the Perth Hills at their most stunning time of year. The already (in)famous zig zag stage will once again be joined by the popular stages of Muchea, Racecourse Road, Bindoon Country Club and Western Range, a stage that last year led Jim Richards and Barry Oliver to state that, “in 15 years of tarmac rally events all around Australia, Western Range has to be one of the best stages we have ever driven!” With nearly a full list of Expressions of Interest, organisers are once again looking for a bumper field of local and interstate competitors. “We started getting expressions of interest as soon as the event concluded last year and they haven’t stopped since,” said Event Director Bob Schrader. “We run an event based on restricted entries and if the expressions of interest are anything to go by we will have a full field in September. “Our key goals are to provide a highly enjoyable ‘Five Star’ event for Classic and Modern vehicles. “The spirit of Quit Targa West is centred on the taking part and enjoyment of the “thrill of the open road” in a controlled and competitive environment,” he continued. Quit Targa West entries close on Friday 15 August at 20:00 hours with competitors urged to get their entries in as soon as possible to avoid missing out. QUIT Targa West would like to thank the many event sponsors, individuals, organisations, car clubs, volunteers and supporters who so generously give their time, expertise, resources and commitment to make the event run.
