EEGA EXCEPTIONALLY

Every time a Rajamouli film releases, audiences and critics should search for adjectives. One can’t simply say that Rajamouli film is ‘good’ or ‘very good’. One has to search for words to define it. Rajamouli never gets tired of outperforming himself. He has done that numerous times in the past and has done it again. Eega is one of the best films that was ever made on Indian screen.

Rajamouli made sure that this film comes out brilliantly on the technical front. All the technicians have done terrific job and have given outstanding output. While Keeravani’s music is the highlight, his background score was simply hilarious, which undoubtedly took Eega to the next level. Not to forget Senthil’s cinematography when we discuss the pros of Eega as he rightly matched CGI and camera shots in perfect sync. And editing too was so crisp that left no stone unturned. Keeravani’s music is the highlight. His background score took eega to the next level. Senthil’s camera work is another asset. He matched the CGI shots and regular camera shots in perfect sync. Editing is crisp. Visual FX and Graphics are top notch for the standards of a Telugu film. Rajamouli’s has done very good research on the houseflies. He captured every tiny movements and incorporated in the film. In fact, there are tons of scenes that would leave you awestruck. Watch out for the scene where Eega causes a traffic jam and the scene where it gets back into the running car through ac window. Only a great director could imagine such scenes and bring them on to the screen with such finesse. Rajamouli ranks among the best directors that India has ever produced. Eega proves that he is the commercial guru of cinema. He made a film, which is totally different and yet commercially viable.

COVER STORY

Nani (Nani) will be in love from head to toes with Bindhu (Samantha) while Bindhu too falls for Nani, but never reveals it. A filthy rich business magnate, Sudeep who enters the plot fantasizes Bindhu and tries hard to romance with her at any cost. Bindhu respects Sudeep as he comes forward and donates lakhs of rupees for a social cause. And the duo meets regularly either at anyone’s office. One day Sudeep takes Bindhu out for lunch wherein he indirectly confesses he was crazy about her. But, Bindhu would end up paying no attention as she would be busy gazing at Nani, who will be around her shoulders. On noticing Bindhu’s interest in Nani, Sudeep allegedly hatches a plot to eliminate Nani and accomplishes the same. Nani, who will lose his life for Bindhu, will reincarnate as a housefly.

Eega (the housefly) accidentally comes across Sudeep and it suddenly remembers its past life. And that’s where the actual story starts. Eega immediately meets Bindhu and with much effort it makes Bindhu understand that Nani took rebirth and come before her. The duo with combined effort sketches plans to eliminate Sudeep. The protagonist finally dies in the climax after housefly turns into a suicide bomber. The delicate emotions in the climax scene moved scores of audience in the theatres, who discussed the same scene after they came out of cinema halls.

COVER STORY

Nani is restricted for very less time. He hardly has twenty minutes of screen time, but impresses with his natural portrayal. He is lovable in that cameo. Samantha is a damsel. She is a natural beauty that is easy on eyes. She knows how to carry herself on screen. She can act too. Samantha, who hasn’t yet scored a flop in Telugu, will keep her success record intact with this movie. Sudeep is stupendous. What an actor he is! He made it believable that he was really being tortured by the housefly. True signs of a great actor! Actors don’t get such roles every time and when they get one they have to make full use of it. Sudeep exactly did the same and will now earn many fans here. There is some humorous touch given to his character and he pulled it off without a minute error. Remaining star cast has negligible role to play as the story mainly runs on the principal characters. Samantha is cute and vulnerable. Her subtle expressions of love, fear and anxiety worked well for the film. All the other artistes have also delivered exceptional performances. The romance between Nani and Samantha, though short-lived, is peppy. Director Rajamouli has stated in the past that romance was his weak point, but managed to pull it off pretty well this time around. But the real deal begins as soon as the housefly enters the scene. The pace tends to slacken in between but there are too many ‘wow’ moments packed through it all to keep the viewers engaged. The film was equally challenging for an actor like Naani, who agreed to be a part of it even after knowing that he would be there for just the first 20 minutes of the movie. The story is old, but the execution is new and fresh. Eega is by and large the most

brilliant animation and graphics film. The hard work put in by the entire team was clearly visible onscreen. In addition , Keervani’s music gels well with the film’s narrative. Dialogues were crisp, the cinematography slick and the editing was pretty neat as well. The background score is the stand-out though. MM Keeravani just seems to reserve his best for his kid brother.

The film will definitely collect Rs 100 crore. The film, which has been made with Hollywood standards, will mesmerize audiences of all age groups and classes. It is a must watch film. Watch it to enjoy Rajamouli’s graphical wonder. - Ram Gopal Varma WWW.CINESPRINT.COM | AUGUST 2012

The Filmfare Best Debut awards, both male and female, went to actors Aadi and Shruti Haasan for their roles in Telugu films. While Aadi won the award for “Prema Kavali”, Shruti won the award for her work in both “Anaganaga O Dheerudu” in Telugu and “7Aum Arivu” in Tamil.

Shreya’s musical hattrick! In a rare feat, Shreya Ghoshal achieved the unusual when she won not one, not two, but three Filmfare Awards in the Best Playback Singer (female) category. The singer, who surpassed competition in Telugu, Kannada and Malayalam, confessed that that was a first for her, and will always remain as something she will cherish all her life. Unfortunately though, Shreya couldn’t be present at the awards show, but she had sent across a message wherein she thanked all her mentors who made it possible.

Analysis The camera work of Gopal Reddy was outstanding. This was one of the major assets of the film. If the movie is receiving mixed responses, it’s due to the good cinematography. Otherwise, there’s nothing much to enjoy in this film. Editing and screenplay were not up to the mark. The second half of the movie was just a little boring. The costumes of both hero and heroine were good. There’s not much comedy also in the film

Performance

Sumanth

Ashwin makes a decent debut. He is particularly good with his dances. Lot of hard work has gone into his debut and that shows on screen. He has trained himself very nicely for the role. His looks, dialogue delivery and action sequences are good.

First Super Star Last Rites When Indian Cinema unfolds its pages, it enlists n number of superstars. However, when someone asks who the first and the original superstar is, Rajesh Khanna would be the answer without any doubt. With his outstanding performance, Rajesh Khanna not only etched his name in the books of Indian Cinema but even on the hearts of young women then, who literally thronged wherever Rajesh Khanna went. 56

WWW.CINESPRINT.COM | AUGUST 2012

Rajesh Khanna was born Jatin Khanna into an uppermiddle-class family in 1942, coincidentally the same year as Amitabh and Jeetendra (just as the Khans -- Aamir, Salman and Shah Rukh are also all born in 1965). He is famous for having struggled in the film industry in an imported car. After winning a talent contest backed by several major filmmakers, Khanna signed on a slew of films. In 1967, four of his films were released -- he had supporting roles in Aakhri Khat and Aurat while he was the hero in Raaz and Nasir Hussein’s experimental Baharon Ke Sapne. Rajesh Khanna, who gave many hits with actresses like Asha Parekh and Mumtaz in his four decade old career, broke many a hearts when he married 16-year-old Dimple Kapadia in March 1973. Later, he separated from wife Dimple after the birth of his two daughters Twinkle and Rinkie.

There have been reports that Anita sent a legal notice to Rajesh’s family asking them not to evict her from Aashirwad – where she’s been living for the past eight years. She allegedly claimed that converting the house into a museum would mean that she would have to move elsewhere. However,

I was an actor, I will always remain an actor. Somewhere along the way I was a superstar.

Once Rajesh Khanna, in an interview, elucidated the way women tried to block his car and kissed on the windshield. So crazy the young generation was about Rajesh Khanna. His famous dialogues in Anand movie are till date evergreen.

today, Anita – who had been living with her sister since Rajesh’s death – claimed that all those reports were baseless and she is fully committed to fulfilling the late superstar’s wishes and making his home into a museum.

Anita Advani, the alleged livein partner of Rajesh Khanna, has denied allegations that she has asked for a share in the late superstar’s property. Anita clarified to news channel today that she supported the plan to convert his house Aashirwad into a museum, as per the last wish of Rajesh. She even stated that all the allegations were baseless.

Anju Mahendroo is till date referred to as his ex-flame. The actress, who was also a model and a fashion designer when she started her career in Bollywood, dated Khanna between1966 and1972. They split on a bitter note, and soon Khanna married 16-year-old Dimple Kapadia the next year, six months before her first film Bobby released.

- Ali Peter John

Journalist Ali Peter John, a close friend of Rajesh Khanna, followed his career closely and kept in touch till the very end

John said: “Rajesh Khanna came to the movies after winning a talent contest, and 12 producers had to give him a break because that was in the contract. The producers were known as United Producers and the head was G P Sippy who later produced Sholay. So, when others were struggling, walking from studio to studio for a film role, Rajesh Khanna ‘struggled’ in an Impala (a foreign-made car and a status symbol in the late 1960s and early 1970s). His first three films -- Aakhri Khat, Raaz and

audience. “Kaka (Rajesh Khanna) asked me to remake Aradhana with new actors. He even said that he would help me with the screenplay and music. We were planning to start the work on the film last November when he was well. As soon as he recovers, we will begin the project,” Ashim Samanta said. The association between Shakti Samanta and Khanna dates back to 60s and the duo gave the audience hit movies like Aradhana (1969), Kati Patang, Amar Prem, Ajnabee, Meh****a, Anurodh and Alag Alag. Aradhana, a big hit at the box office, had also bagged awards in the best actress, best director and music category even as its songs like ‘Roop Tera Mastana’, ‘Mero Sapno Ki Rani’, ‘Kora Kagaz Tha Yeh Mann Mera’ and ‘Gunguna Rahe Hai Bhanvare’ are a rage till date.

Rajesh Khanna’s deteriorating health and his unfulfilled dream

Filmmaker Ashim Samanta, son of noted director Shakti Samanta, says veteran actor Rajesh Khanna had expressed his desire that his hit movie ‘Aradhana’ should be remade. INTERVIEW WITH LAKSHMI MANCHU

Lakshmi Manchu has not only inherited the acting prowess from his father, she has also inherited the shrewdness in production. She has used the production of UKUP to do it corporate style. UKUP has generated tremendous pre-release buzz. Here is an exclusive interview with Lakshmi Manchu -

HOW DID UKUP HAPPEN? Manoj told me the story line of UKUP in 2007. I was in USA at that time. Sekhar Raja’s debut film was supposed to be with me. We were working on a script titled Sahasra Sirachcheda Apoorva Chintamani (SSAC), which was supposed to be my acting debut. I was offered a role in Anaganaga O Dheerudu and SSAC was put on hold. Meanwhile, Manoj Manchu was doing other films like Vedam and Bindaas. It took so many years for UKUP to go to floors. WHAT IS THE STORY OF UKUP? UKUP is a socio-fantasy film and it also deals with life after death. THERE SEEM TO BE A BIT OF CHANDRAMUKHI FLAVOR? If you look at the script of Chandramukhi, it will work irrespective of who the hero is. Rajnikant’s stardom has taken the movie to unbelievable heights. Likewise, UKUP is a script-value film. Big name like Bala Krishna will help the movie further. WHAT IS THE SCREEN TIME OF BALA KRISHNA’S ROLE IN THIS MOVIE? Bala Krishna will be there for 20 minutes before interval. But he is present throughout the movie. TELL US ABOUT MANOJ MANCHU? Manoj always wanted to be different. I tell him that he is not a DVD market hero and he should reach out to more and more people with his films. He achieved a lot of credibility by doing different films. He always want the producer to be happy. He has to give away 60% of his remuneration for Mr. Nokia to cinematographer Rajasekhar and music director Yuvan Shankar Raja as the producer didn’t pay them. I always tell him that he should be careful with his finances. He gives lacs of rupees of his hard-earned money to charity and come and ask me for 100 rupees. Manoj never cares for stardom. He is like a new comer working his way out to make it big. Jhummandi Naadam became a variety film (routine for regular heroes) for Manoj who has been experimenting since Nenu Meeku Telusa? .

In UKUP, there are negative shades to his character. he has portrayed villainy and sadism to the extreme degree in UKUP. MOHAN BABU SAID IN THE FUNCTION THAT UKUP IS A 11-CRORE BUDGETED FILM AND THE IT’S MORE THAN DOUBLED? He was just blaming us in public, but he also knows the real truth. UKUP was a 11-crore budgeted movie before Bala Krishna stepped in. Initially it was supposed to be a good entertainer with a bit of experimentation. After having Bala Krishna in the project, the range of the film is changed. Initially we wanted to shoot in the manduva house at Nanakramguda studios. Since, the orientation is changed we wanted to have a big Gandharva Mahal set which itself cost us 6.25 crores. We used around 2.5 lac tons of iron for Gandharva Mahal set. It is done in a complete studio set fashion. We have plans to rent it out for other films in future. If you add up the remuneration of Bala Krishna and other expenses to support the royalty and richness of the film, the budget is shot up. If somebody else had produced it, I am sure that UKUP would have cost around 40 crores. We bought the National award winning tune ‘Neelathamara’ from music director Vidya Sagar. Pixion Chennai has done impeccable visual effects. The total budget of the film is Rs 23,86,24,000/-. This doesn’t include prints, publicity and interest cost. Manchu Entertainment is soon going to be a multi national filmmaking company and we want to have clean auditing records right from the first film. I AM TOLD THAT YOU HAVE MANAGED SOLD OUT FILM FOR ALL TERRITORIES A MONTH AHEAD OF THE RELEASE? We are witnessing this kind of pre-release craze in our banner after Assembly Rowdy. We have 4 to 5 distributors from all areas fighting for the rights. But we selected distributors on the basis of genuinely, not on the basis of price. We are completely confident of the product and we selected buyer who can give us genuine overflows after the release.

64

WWW.CINESPRINT.COM | AUGUST 2012

TELL US ABOUT BALA KRISHNA ROLE IN THIS MOVIE? Bala Krishna’s role for UKUP is what Rajnikant’s role for Pedarayudu. Bala Krishna respects director a lot and he is a director’s actor. His role is a big plus for UKUP. TELL US HOW DIFFERENTLY YOU SAVED THE BUDGET OF UKUP? We had a tie-up with MBS Jewellers and loaned jewelry worth 1 crore rupees from their Mumbai showroom for this movie. We have also loaned a bike worth 30 lacs from Harley Davidson’s showroom in Hyderabad. Kala Mandir has provided us wedding costumes for the movie. Ganesh Nallari came up with a fabulous work for an episode in UKUP. TELL US ABOUT TAMIL VERSION? Telugu and Tamil versions were shot simultaneously. Varuvan Thalaivan (Tamil version of UKUP) is going to be the first Tamil film by Bala Krishna. We had certain Tamil actors exclusively working for Tamil version. Tamil version is not releasing on 27 July. It will be released at a right time in Tamil. YOU ARE ACTING IN TELUGU AND TAMIL AT PRESENT. YOU ARE PRODUCING TWO FILMS AND A TV SHOW. AND YOU ATTEND OTHER SOCIAL ACTIVITIES LIKE WALKING ON THE RAMP AND FASHION SHOWS. HOW DO YOU MANAGE YOUR TIME? I wake up at 6:30 am and complete my work by 9 pm. Even after doing so many things, I still have a lot of time to get bored. WHAT IS YOUR GUT FEEL ON UKUP? UKUP will be a big hit and will be in the league of Chandramukhi and Arundhati. This is my gut feel and I want to go for a backpacking trip to Europe for two weeks after the success of UKUP.

agarjuna - this name has a special significance in Telugu Cinema. Entered the reel world as the son of versatile actor Akkineni Nageshwara Rao, Nagarjuna has created his own charisma and style in no time. His debut film Vikram in 1986 literally drew people of all ages to theatres. Since then Nagarjuna never looked back. Even though there were some flops in his career, Nag (as he’s popularly known as) never got depressed.

He appeared in more than 80 films and won two National Awards and six Nandi Awards (state awards) besides three Filmfare Awards (south). Nagarjuna and romance perhaps cannot be undivided on Telugu silver screen. Right from Maniratnam’s Geethanjali to Manmadudu, Nagarjuna made young women go crazy. And for college goers, Nagarjuna as Shiva in Ram Gopal Varma’s debut movie is till date a role model character. This film shot him into limelight across India as this

movie was even dubbed into Hindi. This movie, which was screened, at International Film Festival in Kolkata, supposedly made audience awestruck. Today meet anyone in Kolkata and the moment Telugu cinema discussion pops up, the first name they would take is Nagarjuna. ‘Kya actor hai yaar!’ this was the common word Cine Sprint team heard when the team enquired as to what people in Mumbai and Kolkata think of Nagarjuna.

CELEBRITY OF THE MONTH Another film, which had an ever lasting impression on Bollywood movie buffs was, Criminal (which was also made in Hindi). Directed by Mahesh Bhatt, Criminal was one movie, which cannot be erased off the minds of romantic flick lovers. Thanks to MM Keeravani who scored brilliant music to the film, which played an important role in movie’s success. Before Criminal, Nag appeared in Tollywood films such as Nirnayam, Killer and Chaitanya. All these movies brought critical acclaim to the legendary actor. At a point of time when everyone in the state came to a conclusion that Nagarjuna would only suit for romantic and action roles, he astonished scores of people with a full length comedy entertainer - Hello Brother. The movie, which was directed by late EVV Satyanarayana, tickled the ribs of audiences to the core. This movie still remains in the hearts of the fans of Nagarjuna. Once Nagarjuna told in an interview that his youngest son Akhil’s favourite movie was Hello Brother. Two years after Hello Brother, Nagarjuna came in front of the public yet another time as a powerful lover boy in the film—Ninne Pelladatha, which was directed by Krishna Vamsi. The movie 70

WWW.CINESPRINT.COM | AUGUST 2012

had a song ‘Greeku Veerudu’ and after release of this movie, for years together, Nagarjuna was referred to as Greeku Veerudu (meaning Greek Hero). Nagarjuna played a character of a youngster, who had to strike a perfect balance between love life and family values. And Nagarjuna had perfectly handled the role and supposedly gave his best.

While everyone was still enjoying and discussing Ninne Pelladatha, Nagarjuna had strike the silver screen as Annamayya (a Telugu saint and poet whose hymns are till date part and parcel of prayers at Tirumala). Nagarjuna as Annamayya touched the hearts of aged women for the first time. Nag has got critical acclaim for this movie. Later, Nag appeared in romantic flicks such as Santhosham and Manmadhudu. In fact, after release of Manmadhudu movie (an out and out romantic film), Nag had been referred to as Manmadhudu. After, that a couple of movies such as Shivamani, Nenunanu and Mass received average response at the box office.

Currently, Nagarjuna is working on two projectsone being Shirdi Sai and the other one is Damarukam. Both these films are going to hit the theatres soon. Nagarjuna has even produced a few films earlier. He’s a person, who has been striving for uplifting Telugu Cinema and that’s the reason why he came up with an acting school at his Annapurna Studios in Hyderabad. On a personal front, Nagarjuna is a jovial and down-to-earth guy. All in all, Nagarjuna is one of the big assets of Telugu Cinema. In the next issue...Cine Sprint would come before you with another legendary film personality of Tollywood. For regular updates on Tollywood film Industry, visit AndhraWishesh.com.

L egend of tollywood

Superstar Krishna Krishna is one of most popular actors that Telugu film industry has ever produced. During his long career which started in 1962, he acted in over 350 movies. His fans all over the world loved him and referred to him as “Super Star Krishna”. In addition to acting he also directed 17 feature films and produced many films under his Padmalaya Film Studio banner. He was also elected as a Member of Parliament from Eluru under Congress Party. He is well known for his generosity and kindness.

K

rishna was born to Veeraraghavayya Chowdhary and Nagaratnamma Ghattamaneni in a remote village called Burripallem, near Tenali in Guntur district, Andhra Pradesh, India. He was the eldest of the five children from a middle income agrarian family. He could not afford to have convent education, so he attended the school in his village to get his primary education before moving to Tenali and Narsapur to do his S.S.C and Intermediate. Impressed by his scholastic achievements, his father raised money to send his son to the prestigious C.R.R. college in Eluru. There, he shared a room with two aspiring actors, Shoban Babu and

Murali Mohan, who later became stars in their own right. Krishna played an active role in various cultural events organized by his college. His performance in the play “Cheesina Paapam Kaasiki Velleena” brought him critical acclaim, thus encouraging him to pursue acting more seriously. After he graduated from college, he married Indira Devi on November 1, 1962. She provided him emotional support during his salad days. In 1965, she gave birth to their first child Ramesh Babu Ghattamaneni about the same time when Krishna made his feature film debut with “Tenemanasulu”, which became a big hit and made him an overnight star. He soon developed a

reputation as a trend-setter by starring in the first Telugu detective film “Gudachari 116.” He was the hero of the first Telugu cowboy film in “Mosagallkau Mosagadu.” He played a James Bond type in “Agent Gopi” and became known as “Andhra James Bond” during that time. He also starred in “Alluri Sitarama Raju,” which is the first color scope film. He later starred in the first 70 MM film that he also produced and directed titled “Simhasanam.” “Simhasanam” was the first of 17 feature films he directed. In 1968, Krishna’s daughter Padmavathi was born. In 1969, Krishna married his frequent

leading lady Vijaya Nirmala and this created fodder for the gossip columns as they were still married to their respective spouses with children. Krishna continues to be married to his first wife Indira Devi and would have three more children with her: Manjula Ghattamaneni in 1970, Mahesh Babu in 1975, and Priyadarshini in 1979. He never had children with Vijaya Nirmala but he apparently raised her son Naresh from her first marriage as his own. He also supported Vijaya Nirmala’s directorial aspirations by starring in the films she directed and was later proud when she made the Guinness Book of Records as the most prolific female director in 2002. Krishna established the prestigious “Padmalaya Studios” with his brothers in 1983 and has won respect for donning several hats as actor, producer, director, distributor and exhibitor. He also acted in many political targeted movies. During Rajiv Gandhi times, he was inclined towards Congress and even won from the Eluru constituency. After the death of Rajiv Gandhi, Krishna quit politics and has continued to be involved in films and supporting his son Mahesh Babu’s success as an actor. In early 80’s he was the number one star. Ghattamaneni Krishna is not only a superstar, but is also a successful director (directed about 17 movies) and producer with many

Legend of tollywood

Krishna announced that he was to produce Kurukshethram. This surprised N. T. Rama Rao, who also wanted to make a movie

It was in 1976 that Krishna also announced that he was to produce Kurukshethram. This surprised N. T. Rama Rao, who also wanted to make a movie, called Daana Veera Soora Karna, based on the epic. The relationship between the two men was strained further when Krishna expressed his inability to drop his project and both started producing their films at frenetic pace. While Daana Veera Soora Karna was made with a limited budget and featured Rama Rao in all the key roles, Kurukshethram was made on a larger canvass, with a huge cast. Daana Veera Soora Karna won the ratings battle when the films were released in 1977, but Krishna’s good run at the box-office continued with Saavaasagallu and the actor further penetrated into the urban mass segment with the super-hit film Dongalaku Donga.

blockbusters. He made debut as lead hero in Tene Manasulu(1965 ) which is the first color social movie in Telugu. In 1993, he came back strongly with the unexpected super success of Pacchani Samsaaram. But it was Vaaraasudu, his second release in the year, which made him the cynosure of the film fraternity again. The super-hit film, in which Krishna played a supporting role after a long time, however, incurred the wrath of his fans as it contained some scenes, which they thought, deprecated his image. In fact, the dissent was so great that the film-makers had to reach out to them through the print media requesting them to patronize the movie after chopping of those scenes and adding an action episode on him. But it was the film Number 1, which was another important turning point in his career as it helped him to cross-over to a new segment of audience. Released amidst tight competition during the festive season in January 1994, the film featured Krishna wearing flashy outfits and dancing with verve and energy. Audience, who were inundated with the lengthy dialogues in his movies, welcomed this image makeover and gave two-thumbs up for it. The film went on to become a phenomenal success and paradoxically, several producers requested him to appear in a song to help their film’s cause. Amma Dongaa! (1995) was another thumping success in his career and the actor, instead of treading carefully to consolidate his re-gained stardom, went on a signing binge again while others were drastically reducing the number of films they acted to maximize revenues for each of their films. A string of flops followed Superstar Krishna and though Krishna became the fastest to reach the 300 films milestone (in a lead role), he was no longer a box-office phenomenon. This time, time was also not on his side to increase his personal stock as he was in his early fifties by then. The aged war-horse has since then been doing supporting roles in several insignificant films. Krishna also directed the Bollywood Film called “Ishq Hai Tumse” produced by Padmalaya Telefilms, starring Dino Morea and Bipasa Basu in lead roles which is the remake of the Telugu film “Sampangi” in the year 2004.

Legend of tollywood John Wayne was the original cowboy. Then Clint Eastwood popularized the genre of movies starring cowboys, and many came after him. Cowboy: Literally means ‘A Boy who tends Cows’, traditionally ranchers who attend to cattle in N. America, mostly the region that is Texas now, who would dress a certain way (hat, scarf, cargos, leather shoes, etc.), apparently have some character traits common to all. What Hollywood made of them: Wild Wild West, guns, drawl in typical southern accents, horses and women. There’s Telugu hiphop and Tamil rap now, so imagine the fun of having a Telugu cowboy. Who could play a cowboy and get away with it in Telugu cinema? Ans: Superstar Krishna.

India’s first cowboy Mosagallaku Mosagadu was the first cowboy film in India. It was produced by G. Adiseshagiri Rao, directed by K. S. R. Das in the banner of Sri Padmalaya Films in 1971. This was the first Telugu movie to be dubbed into English, and it was screened in more than 125 countries, which is a record in Indian Cinema

Mosagallaku Mosagadu was such a huge hit, that several ‘Telugu cowboy’ movies came after that. Krishna of course signed six cowboy flicks right after that including Manchivallaku Manchivadu to Dongala Dopidi. Padmalaya’s first production Agni Pariksha might have flopped, but cowboy flicks like The Good the Bad and the Ugly fired the actor-producer’s imagination. It was a tricky job to nativise the cowboy content, because it is esentially about the lifestyles of a sect of people (try making a Rayalaseema faction film in Hollywood). Arudra took it to the era of English-French colonizing our country. He also took various characters from cowboy movies, like Nagabhushanam’s character is based on ‘Ugly’ in the earlier mentioned movie and Krishna himself is a Robinhood of sorts entwinded in a revenge setting. Cows do not appear to play a role in either the original or this nativisationthis is called artistic liberty or in other more honest terms, the distortion of truth by popular media. Either ways, the public love it.

KSR Das directed the movie, which was his first Telugu color movie. One highlight of the movie to get the feel of the place, sandy regions and other terrain had to be selected. Shooting was mostly outdoors in places like Bikaner, Shimla, Pondicherry, Madras and others. Near River Sutlej and its hot springs with bluish-green water, snowcapped areas near Tibet border (where lead Vijaya Nirmala had to walk barefoot in the snow for a song) and some shooting at Pakistan-China border where the location was a completely new experience for the Telugu audiences.

This film ran for over 200 days and was financially a very big success. In the second run, when the film was released after a gap of five years it ran for 100 days. This incidentally was the film that got the great poet Sri Sri a national award for his song ‘’Telugu Veera Levara.’’ Lot of producers from Telugu film industry including NTR planned to make this film. N.T. Rama Rao even had the script made. But only Krishna could execute and succeed. After this film, Krishna planned to produce a film on ‘’Chatrapathi Sivaji’’. He could not somehow make it till today.

John Wayne’s cowboy flicks were set mostly in America whereas Eastwood shifted his backdrop to Italy, which was a change for cowboy movies. Producer Adi Sheshagiri Rao knew why Eastwood’s movies clickedthe location or rather the change of scene played a major role amongst other obvious factors. The movie which was inspired from English films was dubbed into English and released overseas with the title Treasure Hunt, in Hindi as Gunfighter Jhonny and in Tamil as Mosakaranki Mosakaran. This was one of the few Telugu movies that ran in Bengalooru for a record 100 days. The movie ran in Telugu and effortlessly finished the 100 day mark, resulting in the usual hype and hoopla and celebration parties. Telugu audiences loved Krishna’s new avatar, new locations used and all the dishum-dishum in it. Krishna remains the first Telugu ‘cowboy’ and the first Telugu ‘James Bond’. Another prestigious film of this production company was ‘Alluri Sitarama Raju’. This is the story of a freedom fighter who fought against the British for the freedom of his mother land. Krishna had done a thorough research of the history and spent hours studying the character of the legendry revolutionary. He visited ‘’Manyam’’ the native place of Seetharama Raju, met some his contemporaries of those days, tried to learn his mannerisms and all the minute details about the martyr. He once again spent money like water to recreate the entire setting for recreating the days of the British. Contrary to the fears of film pundits, the film was a super hit. It also earned Krishna kudos, laurels and of course awards.

Apart producing films he has also started Padmalaya films, a distributing company that distributed several films. As a part of the efforts of the Government to shift the film industry to Hyderabad from Madras, he was offered land to construct a studio at Hyderabad. He has constructed Padmalaya Studios in Hyderabad and produced and directed ‘Simhaasanam’ from his native soil. The film was made in both Hindi and Telugu. Krishna has acted in the Telugu version while Jeetendra did the lead role in the Hindi version. The film was financially successful though not a super hit like his earlier films. Krishna surprised every one by announcing production of Devadas. The earlier Devadas of Akkineni Nageswara Rao was deemed as one of the all time great movies in which, Nageswara Rao gave a memorable performance. Even the great Dilip Kumar,

who acted the role later admitted that he could not act as good as Nageswara Rao. Several people tried to dissuade Krishna from going ahead with the venture. Krishna all the same went ahead and produced the film in which he acted as Devadas. Some refused to accept him as Devadas while others appreciated him. This film was financially a success. Krishna has also directed several films apart from acting. Simhasnam produced in 70MM in Telugu and Hindi was his first film. Later he directed several films and introduced his sons Ramesh Babu and Mahesh Babu as actors through his film Mugguru Kodukulu. Mayadari Malligadu is one of the hit movie with story liine of Munasabu Gangaraju (Nagabhushanam) is an evil man while his son Ramu (Master Ramu) is god-fearing and honest. Gangaraju kills Bala Brahmandanda Swamy (Padmanabham) and puts the blame on Mallanna (Krishna), but Ramu sees the murder. Now, Ramu is in a dilemma - if he tells the truth, his father will die, and if he does not, then an innocent Mallanna will die. This thus creates in the movie an interesting story line.

also surprised every one by announcing “ Krishna production of Devadas. Some refused to accept him as Devadas while others appreciated him. This film was financially a success.

Songs like “Babu Vinara Annadammula Katha Okati..”, “Manasaa Kavvinchake Nannila..”, and “Eenadu Kattukunna Bommarillu..” are timeless classics. They are from Pandanti Kapuram, one of the biggest hit of Superstar Krishna. Released on July 21, 1972, the film completes 40 years now. The film celebrated Golden Jubilee (50 weeks) in Hyderabad and ran 100 days in 19 centers in Andhra Pradesh. Produced by Krishna’s brother G Hanumantha Rao, the film is 73rd movie in Krishna’s career. Until the film’s release, Krishna was more popular with youngsters and mass audiences as his films were predominantly action flicks. Pandanti Kapuram won him female fans and family audiences. Apart from Krishna and Vijayanirmala in the lead roles, the film also had great cast - S V Ranga Rao, Jamuna, B Saroja Devi, Devika, and M Prabhakar Reddy. If we look at this film now, it might seem like a tearjerker but it was a trendsetter at that time for movies were made with loads of sentiment. Many films followed the same path after this release Neramu Siksha is one of the big hit moive in 1973 film directed by K. Viswanath. It is written and produced by veteran actor M. Balaiah. and also made into Tamil and Hindi languages.

(Water Tower), an octagonal tower made from brick, which has served as a prison, torture chamber, watchtower and treasury. Today the tower, which is part of the city wall, is used as the guild hall of the artillery association. The tower and the bridge are Lucerne’s trademark and form the most photographed monument in the country.

Machu Picchu – Urubamba Valley, Peru The Zytglogge tower is a landmark medieval tower in Bern, Switzerland. Built in the early 13th century, it has served the city as guard tower, prison, clock tower, centre of urban life and civic memorial. Despite the many redecorations and renovations it has undergone in its 800 years of existence, the Zytglogge is one of Bern’s most recognisable symbols and, with its 15th-century astronomical clock, a major tourist attraction. It is a heritage site of national significance, and part of the Old City of Bern, a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site. The Zytglogge has an overall height of 54.5 metres (179 ft), and a height of 24 metres (79 ft) up to the roof-edge. Its rectangular floor plan measures 11.2 by 10.75 metres (37 by 35.3 ft). The wall strengths vary widely, ranging from 260 centimetres (100 in) in the west, where the tower formed part of the city walls, to 65 centimetres (26 in) in the east. The outward appearance of the Zytglogge is determined by the 1770 renovation. Only the late Gothic cornice below the roof and the stair tower are visible artifacts of the tower’s earlier history. Since 1979, the tower’s interior is empty again. It is only accessed for maintenance and in the course of regular guided tours.

Restaurants owned by Film Stars Many Film Stars and Celebrities are known for multi- tasking. That’s probably why we’ve seen a ton of them branched out into start up restaurants. From ordinary haunts to swanky restaurants, they’ve done it all. Most do it to have something more stable to fall back on.

CREPE Station Cafe Dino Morea started the first Crepe Station cafe along with his brother Nicolo way back in 2003. It has now become one of the fastest growing chain of restaurants and cafes with operations in North, West and Eastern parts of India. It is a great place to grab a nice breakfast while enjoying a soothing sea-breeze and the beautiful people of Bandra will keep you company.

Food here is very good. Breakfast from omlettes (for those veggies who do have eggs) to various toast and bread options make for a nice start to the day. Wash it down with one of their signature fruit juices. The top picks would be either watermelon juice or lime juice. For lunch or dinner, try the namesake of the cafe – a nice french crepe. Technically, they mainly have galettes (salty “crepes”), though they do have a few sweet crepes too. The farm fresh crepe (Spinach and cottage cheese) is very good and so is the one with the tomato concasse. Avoid all “indianized” crepes – somethings were just not meant to be! The service can be slow but we really seem to be super relaxed everytime we visit. Pricing is just perfect – not too high, but enough to make it count.

How to Apply Lipstick? Lipstick is the product that gives your Makeup the finishing touch. It unites the colors you have used to bring your face alive. Lips are the most sensual feature on our face careful attention should be given to them when applying Lipstick. With that in mind we recommend the following 5 Tips:

Tip1:

Prior to applying your Lipstick you should use a Lip Liner to give your lips a neatly defined edge.

Tip2: Apply a little moisturizer to soften your Lips and also to help the Lipstick to

glide on more easily. Tip3: Apply a light coat of foundation to your Lips to act as a base and to help even

out the color. Tip4: Outline the natural edge of your lips with a Lip Pencil that is not more than

one shade darker than the Lipstick you’ll be using. The Lip Liner keeps the color from bleeding and it gives you a guideline for applying your Lipstick. Tip5: When it’s time to apply your Lipstick, relax your mouth so it opens slightly.

Using a Lip Brush, apply your Lipstick starting at the center of each lip working outwards to fill in the Lipstick.

The second picture below it shows her lying down while the coffee cup is below her washboard abs closer to her privates. The pictures were received with great response from her followers.

Other junior artistes’ eyes are turning green as Apoorva is getting a pay of Rs.35000 a four day shoot. But grapevines say that producers and the directors are making the best use of her body from bottom to top before making the payment.

STARS & STYLE

Changing Faces Nothing in life is permanent. except change. And our stars are no exception to the rule. It’s one thing when the script calls for a changed appearance in terms of dress, hairstyle and makeup. It’s a whole other thing when life guides the decision. There are some who have lost oodles of weight and others who have added some! Some grew their hair longer, some chopped it off! Some have hardly changed over the years, with or without the assistance of plastic surgery. Some have aged gracefully, growing more mature with passing years, yet others have grown younger! Here’s a slice of what changes time can make. Kamal hassan

STAR GAZING - AUGUST 2012 ARIES

(JULY 21 - AUG 20)

This month of August is dedicated to your relationship as you want to work things out and to know where you are going. If you are single, you will go out every night in order to find the partner for the summer or for life. Your presence will be vibrant and you will not be ignored, thanks to Uranus. By the 8th of august, you spend some time with your family and you enjoy being in a cocoon, sharing nice dinners with your parents, brothers and sisters and cousins also. You are protected against road accidents; still you need not to take risks, like driving after some cocktails for example, wear a helmet if you have a bike. Rate 8 Lucky days: 6, 7

Jupiter brings prosperity and you enjoy that feeling of security. You can diplomatically say that you are already engaged, or that you need rest as it is the truth. (JULY 21 - AUG 20)

Mars is in Libra until August 24, so enjoy that beautiful energy that helps you wake up full of desire to move and do more than you do usually. Your summer is busy and active and that is what you want. Sports, learning pottery, archeology, trekking in the mountain, kayaking in beautiful lakes, and dancing each night also, you do all that. You seem ready to commit to a strong relationship if you are in a casual one. You change the rules of the game in the relationship: you want openness, truth and commitment. Some Libras are at the end of a cycle and they want to end the situation with peace, but they are ready to start a new one. Rate 7

You are still in a process of transformation. Some Scorpios are losing weight and some are becoming more masculine (for the men) or feminine and sexy (for the women). You want to attract another type of partner if you are single. You stop dreaming of impossible people who don’t want you. Torments and worries are not attracting you so much. Simple relationships seem to have a charm you ignore for a long time. Let’s hope you will stick to that. Scorpios in a long term relationship enjoy time together. CAPRICORN

(JULY 21 - AUG 20)

Uranus and Pluto keep fighting in your sky and you have the feeling of being manipulated by destiny. In fact it is more because you cannot control all the events happening to you. Even if you organize everything in order to make sure that it will happen as you say. You realize that other people have a will and a destiny and that you cannot always tell them what to do with their life. In love, you are questioning yourself, seeing more differences than similarities in your views. You need to back up and spend time with some other friends who can listen to you endlessly and without judgment. Rate 6.5

If you want to take care of your body and shape, August is a fantastic month to get great results that are visible for everyone. As a male you can work on your abs and you improve spectacularly. As a woman, you remodel your waist and butts by dancing zumba and having fun at the same time. Avoiding responsibilities is important for you until August 23. After that date, you will be in charge again. If you are expecting a promotion for September, some possibilities may open by the end of August. Your loved one may have some family problems and he or she needs your understanding on the matter. Rate 8

Venus brings some joy in your love life, you meet a new person and the story seems to turn into something stronger than a summer love. You speak about the past and it helps him or her to understand why sometimes you just close inside. Some old wounds just don’t disappear without inner scars. If you have a little surgery to make (like your teeth) wait for the end of the months, it will heal faster. Be careful with the sun, you don’t think enough about protection. You help a friend to fix her love life, you give him (or her) the best advice, you are so understanding. Rate 9

AQUARIUS

A very good month of August is expecting the Sagittarius. You will have a good rhythm between fun and work and quiet moments too. Some will take some time away to meditate, write, and do some arts for example. They need some moments without company. Some other days on the contrary, they cannot stay alone. This kind of contradiction will last the whole month. Love is strong but you have some interrogation about the future. You don’t always have the same values and you worry too much about that. You expect independence, so you should give him (or her) the same amount of independence. Rate 9 Lucky days: 24, 25 Challenging days: 11, 12
