ON A SUPER ROLL

Super Bowl! Can you believe it?

Burrow, Bengals weren’t about to let this magical season end

When Cincinnati Bengals head coach Zac Taylor called quarterback Joe Burrow on the night of the 2020 NFL Draft, Taylor only waited a few seconds before he cut to the chase. h Taylor told Burrow, the quarterback who had competed for championships his entire football life, that the Bengals were making this pick with the expectation that the Bengals could make it to the Super Bowl.

No shortage of heroes in this one

Do you believe it?

I mean, you do believe. You wouldn’t have hung around for the past 33 years if you didn’t. But right

It’s the type of message that could have made a different quarterback feel pressure. But with Burrow, it was a message in line with the massive expectations that have been placed on his shoulder since he was an underclassman at Athens High School. Taylor was bold using the words Super Bowl.” At the time, the Bengals hadn’t played in that game since the 1988 season. The Bengals were coming off a two-win year with an aging roster and few long-term pieces in place. It looked like a steep climb to the top of the AFC.

But with Burrow, Taylor believed the impossible could happen.

The Cincinnati Bengals defeated the Kansas City Chiefs in overtime to advance to Super Bowl LVI in Los Angeles. Veteran safety Vonn Bell picked off Chiefs’ quarterback Patrick Mahomes on the first offensive series of overtime to give the Bengals the ball back with a chance to end the game. Evan McPherson knocked a 31-yard field goal through the uprights to give the Bengals a 27-24 victory over the reigning AFC Champions.

“We have a special team,” Taylor said following the game. “We’re not done yet.”

And now it did. The Bengals are heading to the Super Bowl. Burrow led the Bengals to a 27-24 win over the reigning AFC Champion Kansas City Chiefs.

In overtime, the Bengals defense did what so many teams haven’t been able to do. In a sport where both teams aren’t guaranteed the ball in overtime, the Bengals needed a stop against the best offense in the NFL.

After the Chiefs opening drive in overtime, the Bengals got the biggest interception in franchise history. Safety Jessie Bates deflected a deep pass attempt by Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes, and safety Vonn Bell picked off the pass

When Burrow got the ball back, he hit wide receiver Tee Higgins on two passes to set up a field goal. Then rookie Evan McPherson made the second gamewinner of the postseason.

It took an incredible comeback and a stop in overtime, but the Bengals topped the Chiefs to win the conference. It really happened, the Bengals are going to the Super Bowl.

When the Bengals were down 18 points in the second quarter, Burrow led

a touchdown drive. When the Bengals were down eight points at the end of the third quarter, Burrow hit wide receiver Ja’Marr Chase in the back of the endzone and then connected with rarelyused wide receiver Trent Taylor on a two-point conversion to tie the score.

Then early in the fourth quarter, Burrow threw his first interception of the postseason. It was the type of adversity that could ruin a game for a quarterback with less experience in championship games. But it didn’t matter for Burrow.

In a tie game in the middle of the fourth quarter, Burrow just escaped two sacks to scramble for first downs. Following a first-down throw to wide receiver Tee Higgins, Evan McPherson made a 52-yard kick to give the Bengals a 24-21 lead with 6:04 left.

Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes finishedthegameatthesamehighlevel, leading Kansas City to a game-tying field goal in the last second of regulation. But then in overtime, Mahomes made a poor decision that got Burrow the ball back.

With two clutch passes and a first down run from running back Joe Mixon, McPherson ended the game.

As Mahomes didn’t make his last shot, Burrow delivered under pressure. Burrow leading the Bengals from last placetotheSuperBowlisthenextgreatest sign of why he’s becoming one of the

best quarterbacks in his generation.

Before this season, Tom Brady was the only quarterback to beat Mahomes in the playoffs. Winning at Arrowhead Stadium in the postseason is one of the most difficult challenges in the sport.

And then a quarterback, just over a year removed from reconstructive knee surgery, carried a Bengals franchise to the division title, to the first playoff win in 31 years, the first road playoff win in franchise history and now this.

You’re not dreaming, the Cincinnati

Bengals are going to the Super Bowl.

The franchise that for so long was known for its small front office, its outdoor practice facility and its lack of postseason success is now the best team in the AFC. The Bengals have won the conference title, and even better, they look poised to start a run of moments like these as long as they have Burrow.

The quarterback who has made everything possible all season showed why he’s called “The Franchise” in the Bengals locker room. This looks like just the start of a long run of success in Bengals history.

Led by an explosive offense and a quarterback who’s entering the best in the NFL conversation, the Bengals are exactly the team that Taylor promised to Burrow on the night of the 2020 NFL Draft.

Burrow was the difference. At one point,theBengalsscored17unanswered points to take the 24-21 lead. The Bengals defense, which was assembled through free agency in just two offseasons, got the final stop on Mahomes to win the game against the team that had been the class of the AFC.

And then like he has done all season, McPherson made the game winner. The entire team swarmed the field as Burrow and Taylor led the Bengals to a goal that looked impossible for so long.

now, at this moment – Jan. 30, 2022, 6:18 p.m. – do you believe it?

The Bengals were never more beloved in our town than they were at 3:05 Sunday afternoon. Until, of course, 6:18 Sunday evening. That’s when Evan McPherson slammed home a 31-yard field goal into a sea of red Kansas City Chiefs jerseys in the stands at ArrowheadStadium, ensuringthatthefantasy season has one more game.

Bengals 27, Chiefs 24. Overtime The only thing more apparent than the decisive field goal was the sweet sound that accompanied it. “WhoDey’’ chants resonated, authored by party-crashing Bengals fans owed this sort of moment for as long as they can remember. To KC fans, it sounded like a dirge.

You wouldn’t have predicted the outcome a few hours before it happened.

Unless you’d watched this team all season, especially later in the year. It was nothing if not a magic carpet ride. “We were made for this moment,’’ Vonn Bell said. If you don’t believe that by now, you haven’t been paying attention.

Probably, the rest of the country wrote off the Bengals when the Chiefs wentup21-3withfiveminutesleftinthe first half. Nice run, Bengals, you plucky devils. Maybe next year.

You knew better.

The Chiefs, gracious hosts, got the Bengals started in the last minute of the first half. Starting from his 18, quarterback Patrick Mahomes took KC to Cincinnati’s 1-yard line in 52 seconds. The Chiefs resisted attempting a chip-shot field goal from there; Mahomes threw incomplete. Five seconds left.

The millions watching assumed then that with five seconds before halftime, the Chiefs would take the gimme three. Why they didn’t is open to speculation. Maybe Andy Reid, his team ahead 21-10, assumed his offense was good enough to score on demand. After a half in which the Chiefs rolled up 292 yards and scored touchdowns on their first three possessions, Reid could be excused for holding that opinion.

Mahomes threw in the left flat to Tyreek Hill, who had no chance. Bengals corner Eli Apple took down Hill as soon as he caught the ball. No gain. Half over.

That turned the game.

putting the game out of reach.

Cincinnati’s defense kept Kansas City to a field goal in the second half. Defensive ends Trey Hendrickson and Sam Hubbard led the way with 3.5 sacks combined. Defensive tackle B.J Hill also recorded a game-changing interception in the second half. With Hill and Bell’s interceptions, the Bengals forced two turnovers on defense to ultimately win the game.

Joe Burrow continues to not flinch in the face of adversity

Cincinnati’s franchise quarterback went toe-to-toe with Mahomes all game. Once again, Burrow led the Bengals back from a significant deficit. Burrow completed 23-of-38 passes for 250 yards and two touchdowns. He also threw one interception.

“It’s something I’m really proud of,” Burrow said of being AFC Champions. “It’s something I’ve always wanted.”

a perfect postseason

What transpired in the next two hours remains a heart-clutching blur. The Cliff’s Notes: Mahomes was horrible for most of the half, and overtime. Of his first nine throws, six were incomplete and one was intercepted.

Zac Taylor opened up the offense after a curiously conservative first half. Before halftime, Taylor chose not to attack. He preferred to work on the horizontal passing game, which featured a heavy dose of Joe Mixon, at the expense of going for it downfield. The effect was to neutralize his own quarterback.

The Bengals second-half rally was fueled by the defense, but it couldn’t have happened without Joe Burrow’s Houdini acts. Twice on one fourthquarter drive, Burrow turned sure sacks intopositiveyards.Foreverpoised–and making Mahomes look skittish by comparison – Burrow brought the Bengals back from the near-dead.

McPherson gave the Bengals a 24-21 lead on a 52-yard field goal with 6:04 to go. At that point, you could flip a coin to decide the winner. But again, the de-

fense came up stout.

Mahomes delivered in the clutch, driving KC to a1st down at the Bengals 5, with 1:26 left. Cincinnati was running on empty. “Stretched thin,” Taylor said. At least until Sam Hubbard sacked Mahomes on 2nd down. And sacked him again on 3rd. There would be no game-winning TD for the Chiefs, just a game-tying field goal.

In OT, Vonn Bell then intercepted Mahomes on 3rd-and-10, to give the Bengals the ball at the Cincinnati 45. It was all but over by then.

“We’re going to the Super Bowl. It sounds crazy to say that,’’ said Sam Hubbard, who knows better than most how crazy it really is. “We’ve got one more to get it all.’’

Thirty-three years is a long time to endure anything, even something as vague and fleeting as seeking fulfillment from following sports teams. That’s a discussion for someone else, in some other town.

Not here. The Bengals are going to the Super Bowl. Really.

The Bengals’ rookie kicker is a 12of-12intheplayoffsandhasbeensoreliable for Cincinnati all season long. McPherson hit four field goals in the win over the Chiefs and has now made three 50-plus yard field goals in the playoffs.

Miller earns 200th win in a thriller

After losing a one-possession game onTuesday, theUniversityofCincinnati men’s basketball team found its way onto the winning end of a one-possession game on Sunday.

David DeJulius followed his own miss and sank a layup with three seconds left, and the Bearcats squeaked by East Carolina 60-59 at Williams Arena at Minges Coliseum in Greenville, North Carolina.

“I feel like I work so hard, but one of the areas I feel like I’ve neglected is my floaters,” DeJulius said. “I’ve been putting extra time on that this past week. I wanted to get to my spot – because I work on it, I know I could make it – and I was able to get after the rebound.

“But none of that was possible without my teammates and coaches, and a guy like ‘Shoey’ (Mika Adams-Woods) stepping up to the plate and being himself, putting us in the position for me to have that moment and for us to have that moment.”

Adams-Woods scored a career-high 21 points, Jeremiah Davenport added 15 and DeJulius scored 14 as the Bearcats (15-6, 5-3 American Athletic Conference) completed the regular-season sweep of the Pirates (11-9, 2-6). UC defeatedECU79-71onJan.12atFifthThird Arena.

Cincinnati led 51-39 with less than seven minutes to play. But Vance Jackson and Tristen Newton put the Pirates on their backs in the waning minutes.

Newton scored seven straight ECU points to pull the Pirates within 58-57 with 1:05 to play. Jackson, who torched Cincinnati for 35 points earlier this month, had a team-high 25 points and 10 rebounds.

“Man, gosh, he likes playing against the Bearcats, doesn’t he?” UC coach WesMillersaid.“...Ithoughtattimeswe did a great job of closing to him, making it difficult, putting him in tough situations, and I thought at times we didn’t. The senior forward, who scored 14 points in the second half, knocked down two free throws to give ECU a 59-58 lead with 25 seconds left.

After missing a layup on the ensuing possession, DeJulius gathered the offensive rebound and hit his second attempt at the rim. DeJulius then defended Newton as he missed a 3-point attempt at the buzzer. Newton finished with 14 points.

“I thought we executed really well on the last possession,” Miller said. “That’s exactly how we practice it: miss a 4footer, get your own rebound, go back and make it. That’s how we drew it up.

“But no, I thought we did a nice job of executing a counter to one of our favorite plays. We got David a good look, and he missed it, but he did a nice job of getting it back and made a big-time play. Johnson worked his way out of big slump

OMAHA, Neb. – “Everybody goes through slumps.”

Those were the words head coach Travis Steele used following Xavier’s comeback win on Saturday at Creighton

Steele was talking about Nate Johnson, a fifth-year senior, who in four games leading up to Saturday’s road trip, was 4-for-25 from the field and 2for-17 from 3-point range.

Over those four games, Johnson scored a total of10 points, well below his double-digit scoring average, and for a sharpshooter, someone who’s accustomed to knocking down shots at a much more consistent rate, it was a frustrating place for Johnson.

“It was two games ago, I actually cried in the locker room,” Johnson told The Enquirer Saturday as he was headed for the team bus. “I was like, ‘What’s going on? This is not like me.’

“Everybodyhuddledaroundme, gave me support. They just knew I was gonna come out of this slump.”

They were right.

Johnson snapped out of it on Saturday, going 5-of-7 from beyond the arc and 4-of-5 in the second half as the Musketeers overcame a 17-point halftime deficit.

“It’s good to see Nate Johnson make some shots,” Steele said. “And I’ve said this before, he’s the best shooter in the country.

“... Whether you’re Johnny Bench with the Cincinnati Reds as a hitter, whether you’re Steph Curry in the NBA, where he’s one of the best shooters of all time, everybody goes through slumps. And you have to embrace those valleys.”

Johnson said he didn’t do anything special or change anything, he stuck with his same routine and a mindset of just get through it.

“Igetshotsupallthetime,it’snotlike I’m lazy,” said Johnson. “I just tried to be confident and play my game.”

Johnson’s smile told the story all by itself. “It felt great,” he grinned, when asked about getting his shot to fall again. “Everybody was hitting. It was a fun game.”

Johnson said he wants to find his consistency again. Xavier’s a different team when he gets it going. He provides space for his teammates and when he’s shooting it well, the opposing team has another factor to worry about.

The second half on Saturday at Creighton was a prime example of that.

“When you prepare for Xavier you can’t try to take one or two guys away and successfully defend them,” said Creighton head coach Greg McDermott. “It puts us in a quandary.”

The best version of Xavier is a version where Johnson has a consistent impact. If teams have to worry about him getting hot like he did on Saturday, it creates other opportunities on the floor.

Xavier’s 8-2 this season when Johnson scores in double figures.

“I had a lot of support, but I got through it,” said Johnson. “I love this team, I love where we’re going and everybody who’s given up on us, we’re here and it’s only up from here.”

ment.He’sworkedsohardonhisgame.”

After a horrid shooting performance for the Bearcats at Temple, DeJulius opened the scoring with a straightaway 3-pointer and Cincinnati appeared to turn a corner. But East Carolina answered DeJulius’ jumper with an 8-0 run.

The Pirates opened up an early 12-5 lead before the Bearcats scored seven straight, with five of them coming from Mika Adams-Woods, to tie the game at 12 apiece with 13:14 to play before halftime.

Powered by Adams-Woods, Cincinnati took a 32-26 lead into intermission.

The junior guard scored 16 points on 7for-10 shooting from the field in the first half, including two made 3-pointers.

“I thought Mika did a tremendous job of carrying us offensively tonight,” Miller said. “He’s been due for that kind of a breakoutgamebecausehe’sbeenshowing it to us in practice all year.”

Davenport and DeJulius hit back-toback 3-pointers at the start of the second half, and the Bearcats surged ahead 38-28 with 18:07 left.

Behindacareer-high27pointsfrom junior forward Keion Brooks, No. 13 Kentucky dominated No. 5 Kansas 8062 in its home arena. The win snapped Kansas’s 17-game Allen Fieldhouse winning streak. It was UK’s first win in the building since Dec. 1983. The 18point win marked Kentucky’s largest margin of victory against a top-five team on the road in program history.

Kentucky led by 20 points at halftime and never by fewer than14 points in the second half. Seven different UK players scored within the first eight minutes of the game.

National Player of the Year candidate Oscar Tshiebwe posted another double-double with 17 points and 14 rebounds while playing stout defense throughout. Super senior guard Kellan Grady (12) and junior forward Jacob Toppin (11) also finished in double figures.

John Calipari has frequently pointed to areas other than scoring to judge Brooks’ performance, so it was likely a sign of good things to come when Brooks grabbed Kentucky’s first two rebounds of the game and turned one into a put-back dunk.

“The way he came out tonight, he was unbelievable, Tshiebwe said of Brooks. “I’m so proud of him.”

It was Brooks who took over the game in the second half to prevent Kansas from pulling back into the game. Nadal wins Aussie for 21st major

MELBOURNE, Australia – Rafael Nadalgotto21first,breakingthemen’srecord for most Grand Slam singles titles and doing it the hard way by coming back from two sets down to beat Daniil Medvedev in an almost 5 1/2-hour Australian Open final.

Nadal was broken when serving for the championship for the first time at 5-4 in the fifth set, but he made no mistake two games later by serving an ace to earn three championship points and converted it on the first attempt.

The 35-year-old Spaniard now has one more major title than Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic, his long-time rivals in the so-called Big Three.

With the 2-6, 6-7 (5), 6-4, 6-4, 7-5 win, Nadal also became just the fourth man in history to win all four of the sport’s major titles at least twice.

Nadal and Medvedev packed a lot of drama into the final that started Sunday night, was delayed for a while in the 84minute second set when a protester jumped onto the court, and then finished early Monday morning.

“Good evening. No, good morning!” Nadal, looking at his watch, told the crowdatRodLaverArenawhenhefinally got up for his acceptance speech at 1:30 a.m.

In the background, Rod Laver, the ageing Australian tennis great, was in thestandsholdinguphissmartphoneto capture the scenes. A woman nearby held up a sign that stated: “Rafa is the GOAT.”

For now, in terms of men’s major titles at least, Nadal is the Greatest Of All Time.

Nadal said it had been “one of the most emotional matches in my tennis career,” and he praised Medvedev for the part he played in the 5-hour, 24minute final. It was the second longest Australian Open final ever, after Nadal’s loss to Djokovic in the 2012 decider that lasted 5:53.

His victory was even more remarkable considering Nadal flew to Australia with just two matches under his belt in the second half of 2021 because he was sidelined with a chronic foot injury that

can be treated but not cured. He also overcame a bout of COVID-19.

“For me, it’s just amazing. Being honest, one month and a half ago, I didn’t know if I’d be able to play on the tour again,” Nadal said. “Without a doubt, (it’s) probably been one of the most emotional months in my tennis career.

“The huge support I’ve received for thelastthreeweekswillstayinmyheart for the rest of my life.”

Nadal won his first Australian Open title in 2009 and lost four other finals at Melbourne Park before his dramatic win over U.S. Open champion Medvedev. His conversion rate in major finals is now 21 out of 29. Federer and Djokovic each have 20 majors from 31 finals appearances.

Djokovic was chasing the same record at the U.S. Open last year, and a calendar-year Grand Slam, when Medvedev beat him in straight sets in the final.

Federer also had his chance at 21, but Djokovic stopped that when he saved match points before winning the 2019 Wimbledon final.

Medvedev now joins Andy Murray among those who’ve lost the final at the next major tournament after their career breakthrough at the highest level.

It was just the fourth time Nadal has ralliedfromtwosetsdowntowinabestof-five-set match, and the first since a fourth-round victory in 2007 at Wimbledon over Mikhail Youzhny.

He’s is the first Australian Open champion to come back to win after dropping the first two sets of the final since Roy Emerson in 1965.

Medvedev continued his love-hate

relationship with Australian crowds, following trouble in earlier victories over Nick Kyrgios and Stefanos Tsitsipas. He stayed calm for the first two sets before complaining about the yelling and noise between first and second serves.

After Nadal broke him in the third game of the fourth set, on a doublefault, Medvedev walked to the changeover giving an ironic thumbs-up to the crowd.

There was an exchange of breaks but Nadal got the upper hand after a long game when he converted his seventh breakpoint with an angled backhand winner.

Medvedev urged chair umpire John Blom to shut the crowd up.

“Step up Man, it’s the final of a Grand Slam. Please is not enough,” he said. “They’re idiots. With idiots, please doesn’t work.”

After Medvedev served a doublefault to open the fifth set, Blom warned the crowd that anyone yelling between first and second serves could get kicked out by security.

Medvedev did manage to hold and the fifth went with serve until Nadal broke in the fifth game and then, crucially, held for a 4-2 lead after a 13-minute game that went to deuce six times.

That would not be the end of the drama, though, with Nadal broken in the 10th game as he served for the match, but responding quickly with another service break to set up his second chance.

Nadal was the only one of the Big Three who had a chance to claim the record solo in Australia.

Federer is still recovering from knee surgery and Djokovic was sensationally deported from Australia on the eve of the tournament after a dramatic 11-day saga over his visa status because he failed to meet the country’s strict COVID-19 vaccination rules.

Medvedev recovered his composure for his post-match speech, praising Nadal for his incredible endurance.

“Toughtotalkabout(51/2)hoursand losing. I want to congratulate Rafa,” the 25-year-old Russian said. “What he did today was amazing.

“You’re an amazing champion.”

There just won’t be another Brady

Let’s go down the list of some of Tom Brady’s accomplishments:

He’s the only one to play in Super Bowls in three different decades.

Brady won seven of them. He snagged five Super Bowl MVPs. He’s the only quarterback named to two all-decade teams. He’s the only Super Bowl MVP for two different teams.

We could go on. We could list his accomplishments forever. They could fill the data banks of a supercomputer. If we readthemall,we’dbedoingsoforanother several years. All of those data points and accomplishments and awards and records lead into one indisputable fact.

It’s not just that he’s the best NFL player of all time, it’s that likely no one, ever, ever, ever again will achieve what he’s done.

Therewouldhavetobesomebreaking of the laws of physics or new combination of cybernetic and biological interfacing for it to happen again.

Brady’s winning and achievements reach super-duper ridiculous levels, so absurd, it’s almost zany, like a football caricature. Like if you took the show “Peacemaker,” but it starred an NFL quarterback.

Brady was so good that he set a level that will be unmatched. That is the Bradiest thing of all. He was an alien who in 22 years set a standard that’s impossible tomeet.In10years,wewillstillseeBrady as the standard. In 30, the same. In 50, yes. In 100, yes as well.

His former offensive coordinator in New England, Charlie Weis, when asked ontheNFLNetworkiftherewouldbeanother Brady, put it well: “I don’t ever see, at least in my lifetime, anyone winning anywhere near the number of championships Tom had.”

He added: “Let’s just talk about the AFC. I’m going to rattle off five names: Patrick Mahomes, Josh Allen, Justin Herbert, Lamar Jackson and Joe Burrow. Now I just threw out five young guys, right? You have to figure championships

are going to be split between a lot of these guys.

“It’s not just gonna be one guy winning them all like Tommy was doing ... Guyswillthrowforalotofyardsandalot of touchdowns, but let’s see how many people come even anywhere close to having seven rings by the time they’re done.Iwouldreckonthat(won’thappen) in our lifetimes.”

The reason why he’ll stay the standard, maybe for decades, isn’t just his immenseskillandaccuracyasathrower; it was his will. He elevated everyone around him in ways few quarterbacks in history could do. He made average players good, good players great and great players Hall of Famers. Tight end Rob Gronkowski was already a devastating talent, but Brady made him even better.

When I interviewed Brady years ago, he was still in New England. We talked about his competitiveness and he downplayed it, saying it was a team sport, and everyonemadehimbetter, asmuchashe did them. But then he had almost a throwaway line: The main thing I try to do is make sure no one outworks me. And no one did.

There’s a story former Patriots teammate Rodney Harrison told ESPN, which is one of the definitive of Brady’s workethic tales.

This was when I first got to New England, we had become friends and we were in the weight room,” Harrison said. “I show up around 6:30 in the morning and he says to me, ‘Good afternoon!’ So thenextday,Igetthehint,andcomein15 minutes earlier. Same thing: He says, Good afternoon!’ Then the next day it’s 5:45 in the morning, and he makes sure to say it twice: ‘Good afternoon! Good afternoon!’

“So I make it at 5:30 the next day and before he could say anything to me, I looked at him and said, ‘Man, I don’t give a damn what you say, Tom, I’m not coming in earlier than 5:30!’ We both laughed at that.”

There are plenty of hard-working quarterbacks. There are lots of talented quarterbacks. There are only a handful who have both qualities, and even fewer who have both in such high quantities.

What people may not remember is that after Brady was drafted in 2000, the team kept four quarterbacks on its roster, an unusually high number. Brady was the fourth-string quarterback.

Fourth. String.

Anger over being drafted in the sixth round, or starting at the bottom, or early on in his career being doubted, and as he continued to win, being doubted more, and after he was accused of cheating over Deflategate, being doubted yet again. Then, after he entered his 40s, being told he was too old, still being mad.

In Brady’s mind, he was always fourth-string, despite being generational. That motivation helped make him so formidable.

There’s another number to consider when it comes to Brady: one.

That’s where he’ll be for a long, long time. Maybe forever.
