Lou Kroner, ran Cheviot dry cleaners CHEVIOT — Kroner Dry Cleaners was closed Monday in memory of its owner, Lou Kroner Jr. Mr. Kroner died March 21. The Cheviot man was 86. “Dad would be concerned about closing for a day,” said Ray Kroner of Westwood. Mr. Kroner’s son runs the Cheviot establishment that is Greater Cincinnati’s oldest, single-shop dry cleaner still run by its founding family. Four generations of Kroners have worked behind the counter and behind the scenes cleaning and pressing clothes. Mr. Kroner would not be upset over the loss of business, his son added. He would be worried about inconveniencing customers and “making more work for the staff on Tuesday. “Customers and the staff were two topics we al-
ways talked about every night after work,” Ray Kroner noted. “Dad was all about integrity and serving the customer.” Mr. Kroner routinely opened his shop after hours to clean a suit Kroner for a funeral or remove a stain from a wedding dress. His son continues that tradition. “Dad never told us: ‘You have to do it this way,’ ” Kroner noted. “He just led by example.” Mr. Kroner worked at the business from day one. “My mother and dad struggled terribly during the Great Depression,” he said during a 2009 interview. “He was a vest maker and his business went downhill. They lost their home.” So, they turned to dry cleaning.
Lou Kroner Sr. opened Cheviot Cleaners and Tailors in 1939. His namesake helped out when he came home from school. “Dad took in just one pair of pants that first day,” Mr. Kroner recalled. Those pants required one hanger. Seventy-three years later, Kroner Dry Cleaners annually uses 200,000 hangers. The business changed its name to Lou Kroner & Sons Dry Cleaners when Lou Jr. came home in 1946 after spending three years in the navy. He served during World War II, but never went overseas. “Dad was reluctant to say he was in World War II,” Kroner said. “He felt that recognition belonged to those who saw combat. Dad saw that as tooting his own horn. And he was always very hesitant about doing that.” In 1964, Mr. Kroner started the Outstanding
Young Citizens Banquet through, what is now, the Cheviot-Westwood Community Association. Now in its 48th year, the banquet brings together community leaders and teachers to recognize eighth-grade students for their leadership and values. This West-Side tradition is a success. But Mr. Kroner never took any credit for it. “Dad would always just say,” Kroner noted: “It was a group effort.” Survived by children Louis (Mary Kay), Mark (Barbara Wiley), Joe (Linda), Mary (Mary Ann Meehan), Paul (Lynne Riley), Ray (Chris) Kroner, Julia (Gerald) Sullivan, Cathy (Mark) Kelley; grandchildren Katie (Kara Burt), Alan, Oliver (Libby Willig), Frances (Stuart Tennison), Miles, Django, Andrew (Shannon Dunphy), David (Jennifer Hildebrand),
