SCHOOL NOTES McAuley High School Senior Samantha Rack has been named one of more than 3,000 candidates in the 2012 United States Presidential Scholars Program. The candidates were selected from nearly 3.2 million students Rack expected to graduate from U.S. high schools this year. Inclusion in the program, now in its 48th year, is one of the highest honors bestowed upon graduating high school seniors. The 3,000 candidates were selected for their performance on either the ACT or SAT, as well as artistic achievements, leadership qualities, strong character and involvement in community and school activities. Rack earned a perfect score of 36 on the ACT and is a National Merit Commended Student.

The Commission on Presidential Scholars, a group of 32 citizens appointed by the president, will make final selection of the scholars. A four-year soccer player at McAuley, Rack also has run four years of varsity track, is National Honor Society co-president, and is a member of the Ambassadors Club, Key Club, Ski Club and Student Council. She is also a MERFette, a service leadership position. Rack plans to major in chemical engineering/pre-medicine at either Ohio State University or the University of Notre Dame. She is the daughter of Dale and Donna Rack of Green Township.

Mother of Mercy High School

Mercy art students received 41 individual awards at the 2012 Scholastic Art Awards Regional Competition. Artists were honored at an awards ceremony at the Northern Kentucky Convention Center.

Of the 41 awards, six Mercy artists were selected as Gold Key winners. They will compete in the National Scholastics Art Competition in New York City against 30,000 other regional gold key winners. Earning Gold Keys were Sarah Corso, Beth David, Hannah Donnellon (three), Kellie Leonard, Nicole Metzner and Megan VanSant. Earning Silver Keys were Dee Bredestege, Anna Bross, Emma Bunke, Camille Burt, Courtney Campbell, Sarah Cole (two), Michelle Dole, Sara Forbeck (two), Brianna McCrea, Christina Raines, Erin Rudemiller, Morgan Schoener and Amber Volmer. Receiving honorable mentions were Jenni Bessler, Campbell, Cole, David, Lauren Dinkelacker, Lindsey Dinkelacker, Sarah Doren, Jessica Hinkel, Brianna Hughey, Grace Jung (three), Amy Pellegrino, Marissa Prinzbach, Courtney Reder, Shannon St. George, Marissa Sharbell and Heather Williams.

Scholarships

The following students have received scholarships from Xavier University: Seton High School senior Rebecca Ewald has received a Presidential Scholarship. At Seton, Ewald is active in National Honor Society, athletics and service. She plans to major in occupational therapy. Elder High School senior David Hornsby has received a Dean's Award. At Elder, Hornsby is active in athletics, tutoring, and as an ambassador. He plans to major in accounting. Seton senior Sarah Kathmann has received a Trustee Scholarship. At Seton, Kathmann is active in National Honor Society and service. She plans to major in natural sciences. Seton senior Jessica Mueller has received a Dean's Award. At Seton, Mueller is active in athletics, photography and ministry. She plans to major in accounting. All incoming freshmen are evaluated for Xavier’s Trustee and Presidential Scholarships and the Dean’s and Schawe Awards and award levels vary. The Leadership Award recognizes a student’s academic achievement, leadership and overall involvement. The Buschmann Award is based on a student’s record in high school. Amounts vary.

Mercy senior is National Merit Finalist

The College Board has named Mother of Mercy High School senior Brianna McCrea as a National Merit Finalist. She is one of 16,000 high school students in the country with this honor. “Once again, Mercy is so proud of the nationally recognized success of one of our students. Brianna is an extraordinary young woman whose natural abilities are strengthened and empowered by the excellence that surrounds her at Mother of Mercy,” said Mercy Principal Diane Laake. As stated by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation, the scholarship program is an academic competition for recognition and scholarships. High school students enter the National Merit Program by taking the PSAT and by meeting published program entry/participation requirements. There are over 1.5 million entrants each year.
