WALTON – Since 1999, Safran Landing Systems, a brake manufacturer, has been located in Walton, off US 25. On Sept. 28, the company broke ground on it fifth and largest expansion. Safran Landing Systems makes carbon brakes for aircraft and supplies them for customers like the military, UPS, FedEx, Delta Airlines, Spirit Airlines and Air Canada. Carbon brakes offer greater energy absorption than steel brakes.

The $100 million expansion will not only increase production, but will also add 80 new employees. Safran currently employs 290 people in Walton and 7,000 across the U.S. “When we first built this facility 17 years ago, we knew there would be opportunity for growth. But as we stand here today, breaking ground on our fifth major expansion – the largest yet – we can see clearly just how great that opportunity has been,” CEO Vincent Mascré said at the groundbreaking ceremony. “We were the first to introduce carbon brakes to the market in the

Matt Bevin was there to celebrate the partnership and said Safran makes Kentucky look good with its commitment to Kentucky and engineering. “We have much to be proud of in Kentucky. We are known for making exceptional products, engineering and manufacturing exceptional products. We are known for this because of folks like (Safran), and you have set a high standard,” Bevin said. County judge-executive, was in attendance to represent Northern Kentucky Tri-ED. In 2000 Safran had invested $31 million, now Pendery said it has invested $300 million. “Safran has proved to be one of Northern Kentucky’s greatest success stories and a major contributor to Northern Kentucky’s fastest-growing economic sectors, the aerospace industry,” Pendery said. In 2015, Kentucky shipped more than $8.7 billion in aerospace parts and products and as of July 2016 had shown an increase of 21.8 percent.

UNION – Money isn’t the only ideal asset to deposit in bank buildings. It’s also a good home for gently used clothes, shoes, home goods, etc. – at least that is the theory a local organization is placing its money on. Ohio Valley Goodwill Industries will soon open a donation center in a former bank building at the intersection of Old U.S. 42 and Hathaway Road in Union. “This is the sixth former bank building we have purchased for a center,” said Michael Flannery, Oho Valley Goodwill’s public information officer. “The drive-up windows are ideal for donations because people are under cover and don’t have to worry about rain or bad weather. There is also a lot of open space in former banks that can be used for storage of donations.” Flannery said the manned donation center – which will not be a retail store – should open in about 45 days. Signs have already been placed outside, but renovations are needed inside. Union residents must currently drive to Tanner’s Lane in Florence to drop off their items at a Goodwill location. That center is both a store and donation center. Ohio Valley Goodwill Industries currently has 32 locations. The Union donation center will be Northern Kentucky’s fifth location. Each of the races for seats on the Boone County Board of Education are now unopposed. Division 3 incumbent Steve Templeton withdrew from the election. His name will not be on the ballot. That leaves Matthew McIntire to run unopposed. McIntire has a communications degree from University of Kentucky and an MBA in finance from Northern Kentucky University. “I view this as another way to serve and be involved,” McIntire said. “I hope I can make a difference.”

UNION – Big Bone Lick State Historic Site will celebrate pioneer lifestyles at the 34th annual Salt Festival on Oct. 14-16. The festival will feature demonstrations of pioneer living, skills and traditions. Guests may browse crafters corner, enjoy folk and bluegrass music, listen to a storyteller, view prehistoric Ice Age artifacts, and observe a blacksmith working with a red-hot iron.

Visitors will also be able to see how salt was extracted from the waters of Big Bone, watch a flintknapper make a stone point, and discover how bison hair was spun into yarn. While visiting the park, guests are encouraged to stop at the park museum and visitor center to see some of the “big bones” and the bison herd. Big Bone Lick State Historic Site is recognized as the birthplace of American vertebrate paleontology for its significant role in the develop-

ment of scientific thought regarding extinction and the relationship between geology and paleontology the world over. On Friday, Oct. 14, the park will host school groups. Schools interested in bringing classes to the festival should call the park at 859-384-3522. The cost is $2 per person. Festival admission on Saturday and Sunday is $5 per person. The festival will run from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

FLORENCE – Duke Energy donated $10,000 to Boone County Schools at the Sept. 8 Board of Education meeting. The check is to help promote STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) energy teams which were recently established in a handful of schools through grants. The Union donation center opening comes at about the same time the organization celebrates its 100th year. “On Oct. 26, 1916, Methodist minister Richard Scully started Goodwill with $6.04 at the intersection of Sixth and Freeman,“ Flannery said. “This year, we celebrate 100 years of serving people with disabilities and a lot of the people we serve in-

clude our veterans.” Two years after starting Ohio Valley Goodwill, Scully introduced a special donation bag. In the mid-1950s, Goodwill moved to Woodlawn. That facility is still used today. It was renovated in 2004. In the past decade, Ohio Valley Goodwill has opened four satellite vocational training centers. Ohio Valley Goodwill is credited each year for diverting more than 45 million pounds of donated materials from area landfills, Flannery said.

Voters in Boone County will see a handful of unopposed races on the November ballot for state officials. In House of Representatives District 60, Sal Santoro, R-Florence, is unopposed. He has been a member of the House since 2007. In District 61, incumbent Brain Linder, R-Dry Ridge, will run against Democrat Kevin Napier of Georgetown. Linder has been a representative since 2013. Napier founded Kentuckians Against Heroin. Verona residents in District 63 will see incumbent Diane St. Onge, R-Lakeside Park, running. She has been a mem-

ber of the House since 2013. In District 66, Addia Wuchner, R-Burlington, is running unopposed. She has been a House member since 2005. In District 69, incumbent Adam Koenig, R-Erlanger, will be unopposed. He has been a member of the House since 2007. Kentucky Sen. John Schickel, RUnion, will also be running unopposed after Independent Leah King withdrew from the Senate race. Her name will not be on the ballot. Schickel has been a member of Senate since 2009. First, if using onions, mushrooms, meat, bell peppers, etc., saute them in a bit of butter or olive oil before cooking the omelet. If using spinach or other greens, wilt them in a skillet with a little water. If using cheese, use shredded or thinly sliced cheese. Beat eggs with salt and pepper until combined. Heat butter on medium high heat in -10 inch nonstick pan, and when foaming subsides and ust starts to color a bit, pour in egg mi ture. Cook until edges start to set, a few seconds. With a spatula, gently push cooked portions from edges toward the center, tilting pan to one side so that uncooked eggs run to edge of pan. When top surface of eggs is set but still a bit moist looking, sprinkle with filling. Fold omelet in half with spatula. Slide omelet onto plate.

A change in the birthday eligibility cutoff for Kentucky kindergartners will take effect in the 2017-2018 school year. The new date for Kentucky students is Aug. 1. Any child who turns 5 years old on or before Aug. 1, can enroll in half-day kindergarten. This change affects students statewide. Eric Van Laningham’s Cooper High School boys cross country team has won the past four Class 3A Northern Kentucky regional championships in the postseason. In those four seasons, Cooper has won the Northern Kentucky Athletic Conference championship meet three of those years, losing to Covington Catholic in 2013. The two rivals have rarely been on the same course so far in the 2016 season, but reunited Oct. 8 at Idlewild Park in Burlington for this year’s NKAC meet. What is not rare is Jaguar victories, as Cooper scored 31 points to edge CovCath, who had 45, and snare its third straight conference title. CovCath is a 3A team as well. “We haven’t seen CovCath in a month, and they’ve been

looking really strong,” said Van Laningham. “They have a really good team. I’m not sure we were better than they were but our guys were properly motivated to go after it. I thought it was our best race of the season.” Juniors Arthur Sonzogni and Nathan Byrd hit the line in a photo finish for second place, with Sonzogni getting the nod. Senior Michael Hoffman was sixth, senior Tim Stidham seventh and freshman achary Armour, 13th. Armour, who his coach said is one of the top freshmen in the state, was a big key in the fifth spot. Cooper’s top four came in with a lot of bigmeet experience. “They put in a lot of good work this summer,” Van Laningham said. “They’re dedicated and motivated. (Nathan and Arthur) are both really competitive guys. It was ex-

citing to see Nathan catch Arthur at the end of the race. They said it was pretty fun. We have a couple of seniors who have been strong runners for us the last couple of years. Tim starts way in the back and by the end of the race he was top 10. He’s very consistent.” CovCath had three in the top 10, led by Owen Piatt in fourth, Will Akin in eighth, and Nick Eten in 10th. Michael Kessans and ack Hemsath were right behind Eten in 11th and 12th for the Colonels. The small-school teams ran at Idlewild as well, during a rare day this year in which most of the local powers were on the same course. UNION - The Cooper volleyball team has had a season to remember so far. But the biggest goals are yet to come as the Jaguars get ready for the KHSAA postseason. Cooper is 19-3 entering play Oct. 10. “One thing I believe we need to continue to improve on is to keep working on the little things and continuing to gel as a team on the floor,” said head coach Michelle Isaac. “Our team wants to be big in the postseason and make things happen so all their hard work pays off. “ Cooper’s three losses are all to some of the top teams in the state. The Jaguars challenged perennial Ninth Region favorite Notre Dame on opening night, winning the first two sets before losing the last three, including 15-12 in the fifth. Cooper also fell to defending Eighth Region champion North Oldham and 11th Region runner-up Tates Creek.

The Ryle girls’ golf team accomplished a first Oct. 12 with secondday play at the Kentucky High School Athletic Association state tournament at Bowling Green Country Club, but the Raiders weren’t content with merely showing up for the final round. “This was an all out team effort all the way,” Ryle coach Jeremy Thornton said. “The girls played well to the end.” The Raiders have a top-10 placing to show for it after coming away with a program-best sixth-place finish and a team score of 693. Leading the charge were sisters Brooklynn and Olivia DiPaolo. Brooklynn, a junior, tied for 27th individually with a two-day score of 166. Olivia, a sophomore, shot 167 and tied for 30th. “Brooklynn played well and so did Olivia,” Thornton said. “Brooklynn helped herself and her teammates.” Brooklynn DiPaolo finished three shots behind local leader Madison Smith (163) of Cooper and two shots behind Notre Dame’s Lauren Bracken (164). Caitlyn Richardson (175) and Madison Kleckner (185) also scored for Ryle. Kayla Behne rounded out the Raiders’ top five. “This is just the third time we’ve been to state and we put up a solid high-placing finish,” Thornton said. “This is the best we’ve done. I can’t tell you how proud I am of the girls. The great thing is, I expect all 12 underclassmen back next year. We’re not going to skip a beat.” The Raiders leapfrogged threetime defending Region 6 champion Notre Dame at last week’s regional and won the crown for the first time in 15 years. Ryle finished fourth in boys golf with 624, its highest finish in team history. Ryan Clements was 19th with 152, Jake Tarvin 27th with 155, Justin Paoletti 42nd with 158, Tim Alexander 48th with 159 and ach Catalano 76th with 173. St. Henry’s Ethan Berling was 63rd with 164. BOONE COUNT - Union city rivals Cooper and Ryle s uared off Oct. 7 with similar explosive offenses and identically dedicated student sections, who both wore pink for breast cancer awareness Friday night at Borland Stadium. In a night filled with fireworks – literally, as Ryle set off explosives after every Raider touchdown – it was the Raider defense stiffening when needed most in a 49-42 win. It was the district opener for the nearby neighbors in District 5 of Class 6A. Both teams will play Conner in the three-team district for seeding. “We’re fighting for dominance,” said Ryle running back Jacob Chisholm. “Everybody knows we’re big rivals. We want to be the Union champs. Cooper has taken us the last two years. We really wanted to come out here and beat them. We punched them in the mouth they punched us in the mouth. It was a big game.” Ryle’s defense stepped up on three key second-half drives. The second came with 5 30 to play in the fourth uarter, when Cooper had fourth and 7 from the Ryle 15. The Ryle defense forced Cooper senior uarterback Jerod Lonaker to scramble and he was tackled short of the first down. Tied 42-42, Ryle set Cooper back when senior Jeremy Pendelton sacked Lonaker on first down, and more Raider pressure forced Lonaker to scramble for three yards on second down. Then Ryle forced an incomplete pass on third down and a punt. Ryle took over at the 50, and Chisholm churned out small chunks of yardage before Cole Burch took over and scored from 7 yards out with 10 minutes to play in the game, accounting for the final TD of the contest. With 1 52 to go in the fourth uarter, Cooper took over at its 5-yard line, down 49-42, but couldn’t get a first down. “Cooper has a great offense,” said Ryle head coach Mike Engler. “Our offense played pretty good tonight. That’s the makings of a good football team.” Defensive plays were rare in the first half, which ended in a 35-all tie. Cooper punted once on a three-and-out drive. Ryle came up empty on two drives, one in which a receiver dropped a wide-open pass up the middle that would have resulted in a score from 70-plus yards out, the other when senior B Tanner Morgan was intercepted by Justin Schlarman on a Hail Mary pass to the goal line. Besides that, the two rivals and their offensive standouts lit up the scoreboard for 10 touchdowns, trading throughout the half with Ryle taking a seven-point lead and Cooper tying it. Cooper had 345 yards in the half to 287 for Ryle. Chisholm returned the opening kickoff 95 yards for a touchdown and had 122 yards rushing on five carries in the half, including a 58-yarder on Ryle’s first play from scrimmage. Morgan completed six passes for 117 yards in the half, most of that on a 70-yard TD pass to Bryce Ashley, who broke multiple tackles while running the last 30 yards to the endzone. On the Cooper side, Lonaker completed 16 passes for 205 yards in the first half, 10 of those to Indiana State recruit Dante Hendrix for 110 yards. Shea Burns had a pair of 28-yard catches. Jaden Jackson had an 84-yard touchdown run, part of his 127 yards in the half. “This is the first game we’ve really

been in a dogfight in,” Chisholm said. “It’s a solid performance by our defense to get some stops at the end. I was yelling. It was amazing.” Chisholm had 218 rushing yards. Golf fans know that the Master’s or the U.S. Open are a much tougher challenge than a regular golf tournament. It’s no different at the high school level, as the Kentucky state tournament in Bowling Green is a step above what most high school golfers in the state see before they get there. In her second time at the KHSAA state tournament Oct. 4-5, Madison Smith was more accustomed to the experience. Celebrity dancers raise $73K to help children The evening of May 26 Children’s Law Center held its fourth annual Dancing with the CLC Stars fundraiser and dance competition at Receptions in Erlanger. Inspired by the ABCTV’s show “Dancing with the Stars,” Dancing with the CLC Stars paired eight local celebrities with professional dancers from Arthur Murray Dance Center to benefit the Children’s Law Center. The local nonprofit provides legal services to children in Kentucky and Ohio. By encouraging their families, friends, colleagues and associates to support their performances, eight celebrity dancers raised more than $73,000 to support needed advocacy for children. There is levied for 2016 ad valorem tax of: $.2.16 per $1000 Assessed V aluation on all Real Property $.1.88 per $1000 Assessed V aluation on all Tangible Personal Property All ad valorem tax es shall be paid as follows: At a two percent discount if paid on or before O ctober 31st; At face value if paid between N ovember 1st and D ecember 31st; Twelve ( 12% ) percent interest shall accrue on all bills paid after D ecember 31st; At a Ten ( 10% ) penalty if paid after D ecember 31st.
