David Levy from Sycamore Township and the Building Tomorrows Communicators Club was crowned Toastmasters District 40’s Humorous Speech Contest champion at their fall conference in Cincinnati Nov. 3. Levy’s speech “Recalculating” regaled more than 200 Toastmasters and their guests with his insights, learnings and humorous antidotes while traveling in the back seat of his parents car as they argued with their GPS to celebrate their wedding anniversary. Levy surpassed seven

other contests representing almost 3,500 Toastmasters from 197 clubs stretching from Lexington, KY, in the south to Columbus, in the north, Oxford, in the west to Charleston, WV, in the east. The district also crowned Gina Ruffin Moore from Woodlawn, OH and the MSD Sewertalk Toastmasters Club their new impromptu speaking champion. Ruffin Moore’s two- to three-minute response to “What’s the Best Thing about Getting Old?” demonstrated her ability to think quickly without time to prepare a response. Toastmasters attending

the district’s fall conference were treated to key note presentations by Dwayne G. Smith, the 2002 World Champion of Public Speaking; Paul Daugherty, columnist for the Cincinnati Enquirer; Linda Swink, author of “Life on a $5 Bet,” Jim Simek of NASA’s Glenn Research Center, and Dietmar Wagenknecht, Toastmasters Region 5 advisor. The district will convene again for its spring conference Aprl19-April 21 at the Blackwell Center in Columbus to crown its International Speech Contest Champion.

Camp for SPCA raises support Several children from the Mount Lookout, Wyoming and Silverton areas conducted a week-long summer camp for the third summer in a row for children in the Mount Lookout area. The camp consisted of many themed days that included fun games, crafts and other activities. Once again, this year, the camp counselors included a charitable twist to their camp. They collected dog collars and leashes, dog and cat toys, food, treats, dog bones, and cash donations. Some of the counselors and a couple of the campers then took the donations to the

SPCA Officer Conners, (camp counselor) Alexander Shepard, Griffin Shepard, Ella Shepard, (assistant counselor) Marina Shepard. Alexander and Marina Shepard both have paper routes with the Eastern Hills Journal. THANKS TO DEBRA SHEPARD SPCA Cincinnati. They were very appreciative for all the donations for the cats and dogs in the shelter.
