SCHOOLS NOTEBOOK Deer Park Junior/Senior High School » Battelle for Kids recognized Tim Hubbard, a teacher from Deer Park Junior/Senior High School, as a distinguished educator for his tremendous impact on his students, colleagues and community. Hubbard was among 44 teachers from across Ohio to receive the 2016 Celebrate Teaching Distinguished Educator Award as a representative of excellence in the teaching profession. The awards were presented during a program at the Educators Connect for Success Conference in Columbus June 14. “Mostly, I am thankful that anyone (Dr. Orso) thought of me in the first place. I teach in a building full of hardworking, passionate educators, and being surrounded by great teachers and thoughtful students is a constant reminder that everyday counts. It is important to be in each day, be in each moment,” Hubbard said. Celebrate Teaching is Battelle for Kids’ commitment to celebrate, support and inspire great teaching. Since 2012, the organization has recognized nearly 250 outstanding teachers with the Distinguished Educator Award who have shown powerful results in the classroom. The 2016 class of Distinguished Educators were selected for demonstrating evidence of great teaching in multiple ways – including academic, non-cognitive and community measures. “The impact of a teacher starts with a student and reverberates through the classroom, the school and the community. It is truly the gift that keeps on giving,” said Jim Mahoney, executive director of Battelle for Kids. “Congratulations to all the outstanding teachers in the 2016 class of Distinguished Educators, and thank you to the thousands of educators across Ohio who give so selflessly of themselves to teach our children.” “To best describe Tim Hubbard, he is the ‘full package.’

Mr. Hubbard reaches all of his students on a personal level, encourages each and every student to reach their fullest potential, takes on numerous leadership responsibilities within the building, promotes a positive culture within the school, and is passionate about his content and the courses he teaches. The students and parents are fortunate to have him working with our students,” Deer Park Junior/ Senior High School Principal Stace Orso said. » The Deer Park Community City School District Board of Education has hired Shane Hartley, teacher at Madeira Middle School, as the new assistant principal at Deer Park Junior/Senior High School. “Shane comes to Deer Park with over 15 years of class-
room experience, which gives him the unique ability to empathize with and encourage our junior and Hartley senior high school students and staff. With Shane’s leadership roles both inside the classroom and on the field, he will have no problem connecting with the staff and students at Deer Park Junior/Senior High School. I am pleased to introduce Shane Hartley to the Deer Park family,” said Jeff Langdon, superintendent of Deer Park Community City School District. After receiving his bachelor of science in mathematics from Centre College and a Masters of Educational Lead-
ership from the University of Cincinnati, Hartley spent the next 15 years a seventh-grade math teacher for both Madeira Middle School and Finneytown Secondary Campus. In addition to his middle school teaching responsibilities, Hartley served as the Madeira Middle School Math Department Instructional Leader, he was the varsity football defensive coordinator at Madeira High School, and he isthe chairman of the “That’s My Boy” award for Southwest Ohio Football Coaches Association. “I’m thankful and excited for the opportunity to join the Deer Park team. Deer Park has always been a community that rallies around its schools, and I’m looking forward to serve the Wildcats in meaningful ways,” Hartley said. As the new assistant princi-
pal, Hartley will take on roles in instructional leadership, student services and student engagement. Hartley’s proven commitment to academic excellence and teamwork will ease his transition from the classroom to the assistant principal’s office. As Hartley moves into the assistant principal role, he will not have to go far for advice as his father, Terry Hartley, served the district for 35 years as a mathematics teacher, football coach, and athletic director. “Shane will be a great addition to the Deer Park Junior/ Senior High School staff, which is already a phenomenal group of educators and leaders. I know Shane will be welcomed with open arms and I’m excited to see what his experiences will bring to the table,” Principal Stace Orso said.

St. Vincent Ferrer's eighth-graders made their annual trip to Morgan's Canoe Livery in Oregonia. Cold water temperatures meant they had to raft rather than canoe, but that didn't stop the water gun wars or the swimming.
