Students film cooking segment By Forrest Sellers fsellers@communitypress.com

Indian Hill High School senior Iesha Pearson described the experience as being like chef Julia Child. Pearson, who is a resident of Kenwood, and classmates in the high school’s College and Career Prep class, were filmed for the school’s BravesBeat weekly news show. The students demonstrated easy food preparation tips for college students. It was similar to a cooking

show, said Pat Pritz, a family and consumer science teacher at the school who teaches the class. Pritz said the class provides students with information on how to prepare for college and then a career. A portion of the class included tips on meal preparation for college students and choosing meals which are fast, affordable and healthy. Pearson thought the information would be valuable to other students, especially graduating seniors, and suggested sub-

mitting the idea to BravesBeat for one of their segments. The students were then filmed for an upcoming broadcast. They prepared a breakfast burrito, a pizza ring and scrambled eggs in a cup. Senior Alex Misali, of Kenwood, who was shown preparing taco soup, said he hoped the information would be beneficial. “People will get to see how fast and easy is is to make this food,” he said. BravesBeat videos can be viewed on YouTube.

Elmore said the combined open routine, varsity pom routine and varsity hip hop routines qualified for the best of the best round on Sunday, all finishing in the top 20. “I’m so proud of our dancers and what they accomplished this year. The junior varsity team made great strides in their capability and improved throughout the season. Varsity took on six routines this year, performing all of them with fantastic execution and emotion. Our energy level was unsurpassed. The

state and national titles are a blessing, but watching these teammates take care of each other and set a common goal then work to achieve it speaks volumes to the type of young women we have at UA,” Elmore said, adding that she is sad to see the seniors competing their last competition season. “They were the foundation of the program, and should be congratulated on earning a national championship every year they danced at UA. We love them and we will miss them.” SCAU awarded $10,500 in scholarships at nationals, of which seven Ursuline dancers were selected to receive $1,000 each. The winners, who are all seniors, were Maria Hale of Fairfield, Rachel Treinen of Loveland, Megan Toomb of Mason, Courtney Arand of Mason, Marisa Pike of Sycamore Township, Angie Pan of Evendale and Grace Ries of Liberty Township.

Freshmen

Scarlet student selected for summer seminar Scarlet Oaks Navy JROTC Cadet Wesley Ortiz, a junior from Deer Park in the firefighting program was selected to attend this summer’s Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) Seminar at the University of San Diego. Only 160 cadets out of 84,000 nationwide were chosen for this prestigious assignment. Cadet Ortiz will attend STEM classes taught by college professors and have the opportunity to see both civilian and military career opportunities within these academic fields. The seminar is for academically gifted cadets who have displayed qualities and interest to become officers in the United States Navy.

Whether assembling robots, constructing wind turbines or designing shoes to walk on water, NJROTC cadets have been inspired to seek higher education in STEM studies. Also known as STEM camp, the training program is for a diverse group of “high-performing” NJROTC cadets who have an interest in college. The curriculums prepare the cadets to make a more qualified college decision while also learning leadership styles from interactions with other cadet leaders. “Their experiences at STEM camps will be another building block of their leadership abilities,” said Dr. Joseph Smith, Naval Service Training Command NJROTC program director.
