LOVELAND FARMERS’ MARKET DODGES LARGE FEE, FOR NOW Marika Lee mlee1@communitypress.com

LOVELAND–A proposed Loveland City Council ordinance that imposes large fees could mean the end of the Loveland Farmers’ Market. “The $500 for 25 weeks puts me out of (the market). I won’t be in it anymore. I can’t be in it. What you are doing with this, you have killed the market,” said Joe Waller, a vendor at the Loveland Farmers’ Market. Loveland City Council was supposed to have its second reading on its temporary or transient businesses and vendors ordinance during its Jan. 10 meeting. As part of the ordinance, temporary or transient businesses and vendors would have to apply for a permit from the Loveland Building and Zoning Department. For a special event, such as Loveland Farmers’ Market, the application fee would be $1,500. Every transient vendor would have to pay a $100 fee for four oneday visits or $500 for 25 one-day visits. The ordinance was tabled by a vote of 5-2 with Councilman Rob Weisgerber, Councilwoman Kathy Bailey, CouncilFILE PHOTO

We interrupt this movie for the inauguration Community Press Staff Report

Sometimes a patriot has to make sacrifices for the good of other patriots. At least that’s what appeared to be happening the evening of Jan. 20 at the Eastgate Brew & View in Union Township, where management cancelled a showing of “Patriots Day” to accommodate a “Trump Inauguration Celebration” hosted by the Clermont County Republican Party. Instead of showing the movie about the response to the terrorist bombing of the Boston Marathon in 2013, the theater at 4450 Eastgate Square Drive projected Fox News’ coverage of the inauguration ball in Washington, D.C., onto the big screen. “That’s kind of ironic,” said Jordan Jetter of New Richmond, assistant manager at Eastgate Brew & View. The Republicans’ inaugural celebration began at 9 p.m. in Brew & View’s lobby, then moved 30 minutes later to one of the theaters for a party that lasted until 11 p.m. Jetter expected at least 50 people to attend the celebration.

For students, inauguration transcends politics Students at Cincinnati Country Day School had an opportunity to watch the inauguration of Donald Trump in the school’s Keeler Theater. For many of the students attending, it was their first time watching an inauguration. “I wasn’t of an age where I could process (former president Barack) Obama being sworn in,” said senior CQWill Swinton. “I feel (I now)

and move beyond the politics which preceded the inauguration. “This election and inauguration is the one I felt most involved in,” said senior CQHunter Folan, adding that even though he wasn’t able to vote, he still felt invested in the process. “I don’t think the inauguration is about politics,” he said. “It’s the peaceful transfer of power. I think Americans should respect the process.” This sentiment was shared by freshman Colin Vaughan. “It marks the beginning of a new time for America,” Vaughan said. “It is a time for people to come together despite differences.” - By Forrest Sellers, fsellers@communitypress.com

Loveland Mayor Mark Fitzgerald, left, and Vice Mayor Angie Settell listen to supporters of the Loveland Farmers’ Market say how the transient business and vendors fees could hurt the market. Both voted to not reconsider the fee amounts.

man Ted Phelps, Councilman Steve Zamagias and Mayor Mark Fitzgerald voting for it and Vice Mayor Angie Settell and Councilwoman Pam Gross voting against it. Weisgerber introduced the motion to table the ordinance so City Solicitor Joe Braun could review it to see if the market should be considered a special event. Friends of the Loveland Farmers’ Market, a support group for the market that formed last year, rallied support for the market and asked people to attend the meeting and voice their opinions. “We are very concerned about the future of the market. The market is not an event and it is not a money-maker for us,” market volunteer Emily Hicks said. She added most vendors could not afford the $200 they have to pay to the market to be a vendor in addition to the $500 they would have to pay the city for a permit. Hicks said the market paid the city $806 in fees

last year. If changed to a $1,500 special event fee and the vendors fees the city would get almost a 4,000 percent increase in funds from the market. Little Miami Chamber Alliance President CeeCee Collins also spoke about how the special event fee could negatively affect the future of other city events such as the Amazing Race and Christmas in Loveland. The fees were set by a separate ordinance that was unanimously approved by council in December. Weisgerber made a motion to reconsider the ordinance, which failed with a 3-4 vote. Weisgerber, Bailey and Phelps voted for it while Fitzgerald, Settell, Gross and Zamagias voted against it. “I need to admit that I am embarrassed and did not foresee the impact of what the fees were going to do when I did vote on that ordinance, ” Weisgerber said. Bailey and Phelps also said they had not considered the level of impact the fees would have on events, such as the farmers’ market, when they voted for the ordinance. “Frankly, I’m a little befuddled by some of our

colleagues here who clearly were ill-prepared or are playing to a room full of people but either way (the fees are) something that the city has gone to a great effort to bring together,” Fitzgerald said. Settell said the fees were not singling out any event in the city. Gross called the fees “the cost of doing business,” adding the special events cost the city money because they use public property. “I hope there is some way we can go back and revisit what we have done and try to find some way to move forward that is in the best interest for the city and these events and the people in the city. What we have done is dead wrong and we need to collectively admit that,” Bailey said. Because the motion failed the fees ordinance will not be reconsidered, the temporary and transient businesses and vendors ordinance – which enforces the fees – could go before council again at the Jan. 24 meeting. “Abby Wright, Lara Pulliam, and Savannah Sears were the three students who came up with the idea and they asked Carlie Hicks, Micah Hicks and Casey Henry to help them,” said, Loveland Middle School aide Kim Hicks, who assisted the students in taking their idea from dream to reality. “In November they wrote a sketch for the LHS News Network, which is broadcast to all LHS students, and asked their peers and teachers to support their effort.” Three teachers got on board and allowed the students to store all of the collected items in their classrooms at the high school. But the response outgrew the space, and the group ended up using a classroom at the middle school to house the bags of donations, which the students transported to Cincinnati SPCA Dec. 15. “I learned from this experience that when you try hard and work hard, it all pays off,” student Micah Hicks said. “We got so many donations to the shelter it was amazing. Warm chicken taco dip A slow cooker favorite. I use deli-roasted chicken. Go to taste on seasonings, adding more if you like. 1 can diced tomatoes with peppers, like Rotel, drained 1 pound Velveeta or similar processed cheese loaf, cubed - use regular, not light or low fat 2 cooked skinless, boneless chicken breast halves, shredded 1/3-1/2 cup sour cream 1-2 green onions, sliced thin 2 tablespoons taco seasoning mix or more to taste 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder Minced jalapeno pepper to taste 1 can black beans, drained, rinsed and drained again Finely chopped tomatoes for garnish (opt)

Spray the slow cooker. Put everything in except for black beans and extra jalapenos. Stir and cook on high just until everything melts and the dip is hot, anywhere from 1-2 hours. Stir occasionally. Stir in beans, let cook a bit more until hot. Sprinkle tomatoes on top and serve.

I have worked with a good many celebrities, and Ethan and Susan Becker of the Joy of Cooking empire are on my list of top faves. They are what I call “good people,” authentic to the core and passionate about family, friends and, of course, food. Before moving to their home at Half Moon Ridge in the East Tennessee mountains they lived in Cincinnati. Ethan and Susan were guests at my cooking school and made some yummy food. The class loved this chili. Even after all these years, it’s still requested. Not too spicy so it’s a good chili for those in the crowd who love a more mild chili with lots of flavor. Ethan says: “Look for sausage that is not heavily spiced. Corn bread is perfect served alongside.” You’ll enjoy their site: www.joyofcooking.com where you’ll also meet the next generation of Joy: John and Megan. Author offers hope through her book ‘Loving Me’ Forrest Sellers fsellers@communitypress.com

UNION TOWNSHIP Batavia business owner Vicki Watkins has known adversity. Throughout her life she has experienced neglect, sexual abuse and recovery from two brain tumors. However, Watkins said her faith in God and the compassion of friends helped her cope and overcome these challenges. Watkins, who is a resident of Union Township, recently co-authored a book with John F. Hunt titled “Loving Me.” The book was self-published in December. “The book is about recovery, healing and God’s amazing love,” Watkins said. Watkins said she wanted to do more than just tell her personal story. She also wanted to help those who are facing significant challenges in their own lives. “One of the things my book talks about is you don’t get help overnight,” she said. “It’s a process.”

Cincinnatian’s word tried to keep up with Civil War general “Up from the South at break of day, “Bringing to Winchester fresh dismay, “The affrighted air with a shudder bore, “Like a herald in haste, to the chieftain’s door, “The terrible grumble and rumble and roar, “Telling the battle was on once more, “And Sheridan 20 miles away.” Poetry was popular in the Civil War, but none more so than “Sheridan’s Ride,” composed by Cincinnatian Thomas Buchanan Read. Born in Pennsylvania, Read ran away from an abusive home at age 10 to his sister’s home in Cincinnati. He worked in a grocery store, made cigars and engraved tombstones before launching a successful career as a poet and portrait artist. According to the 1880 Clermont County History, Read lived here for several years. The poem depicts the 20mile, two-hour ride of Ohio Gen. Philip Sheridan from Winchester, Virginia, to Cedar Creek on Oct. 19, 1864. Sheridan heard the roar of cannon fire, mounted his big, black gelding Rienzi, and with less

than a 300 man escort, charged south. He rode so hard that one aide commented, “the devil himself could not have kept up.” Sheridan found that his Gary Knepp army - surCOMMUNITY PRESS prised by a GUEST COLUMNIST dawn attack was in total disarray. It was in full retreat. Guns, haversacks and canteens were discarded. He recalled the disturbing scene: “There burst upon our view the appalling spectacle of a panic stricken army…throngs of unhurt but utterly demoralized (men).” Sheridan’s appearance electrified his command. Officers waved their swords and his men threw their hats into the air. George Custer kissed him on the cheek. Sheridan rallied his men, halting the retreat. He assured them, “Men by God, we will whip them yet!” With a combined infantry and cavalry counter attack, Sheridan drove General Jubal Early’s Confederates from the field.

CH@TROOM Jan. 18 question

The Battle of Cedar Creek became, with Sheridan’s celebrated intervention, a significant Union victory. Read quickly composed the seven-stanza poem. He read it to a large audience in Cincinnati. Horace Greely, editor of the New York Tribune, called the poem “a magnificent lyric” and printed it on the front page. Republicans quickly adopted the poem as a symbol of the president’s resolve to win the war and widely distributed it in their political literature. The poem, along with Gen. William Sherman’s capture of Atlanta, is generally credited by historians as the turning point of the 1864 presidential election - insuring Lincoln’s re-election. Read painted a life-size mural of the ride. It was bought by U.S. Grant and was later donated to the Smithsonian Institute. Sheridan changed his horse’s name to Winchester. The horse was very popular. After a long and celebrated life, he was mounted and now “lives” in the Smithsonian. Gary Knepp is an attorney and teaches history and political science. He lives in Miami Township.

What changes, if any, would you like Congress and the Trump administration to make to the Affordable Care Act?

“The basic premise of the ACA was of value i.e. health insurance protection and aid for all true American citizens based on their income and employer. It got off to a terrible start due to poor web site performance and phone line support. I suspect the new Congress will keep it, but fix any areas that are not of value e.g. the unneeded hiring of 1,600 IRS agents to monitor it. We need true competition among insurance companies across the 50 states and lower premiums with better coverage. My wish is that California Congresswoman Nancy Pelosi is required to finally read the bill she voted on. Go figure!” T.D.T.

“The ACA reminds me of an old clunker car I once had. The longer I had it, the more it cost me. I decided to scrap it, but wanted to save a few things: the dancing hula girl on my dash, the rootin-tootin Yosemite Sam floor mats, and the mud flaps with the shapely girl silhouette. “Likewise with the ACA, we need to keep guaranteed coverage for everyone including pre-

conditions, and continue coverage under the parents plan for those under age 26. We need to keep the affordable theme, only make it a reality. I asked the junkyard man, ‘Because I liked my hub caps, could I keep my hub caps?’ He said it was against policy. The Tigers dropped their third consecutive game, falling 48-43 to the Rockets. Loveland dug themselves too big a hole early in the game, and despite a valiant comeback, the orange and black couldn’t pull it out in the end. The first quarter saw a defensive battle as the Rockets took a 9-6 lead into the first break. McNicholas extended that lead to 13 points midway through the second quarter and took a 25-15 lead into halftime. The Tigers slowly began to close the gap in the third quarter as seniors Mitch Suder and Mitch Robinson kicked in seven points each to close the score to 41-33 after three quarters. Seven consecutive Tiger points to open the fourth brought the Tigers to within a point at 41-40, but Loveland could never get the big shot or big defensive stop to get over the hump. The Rockets scored five straight before a Jalen Greiser trey to closed the gap to three at 46-43 with less than a minute to play. The Rockets opened the door for the Tigers with several missed free throws down the stretch, but a desperation three-pointer went wide on the Tiger’s last possession and the Rockets closed out the game with a couple of free throws. Mitch Suder led the Tigers with 13 points and nine rebounds. Tripp Willis knocked in 11 points and Mitch Robinson had 10. The loss drops the Tiger’s overall record to 7-6 on the season. The Tigers were back in ECC play on Friday night, traveling to Turpin to take on the Spartans. After Loveland senior Drew Kluender scored the opening bucket of the game, the Tigers never had the lead again and dropped a 58-52 decision to the Spartans. Turpin kept expanding their lead though the first three quarters and led 45-35 going into the final quarter. Tiger defensive pressure closed the gap in the final stanza, but Loveland never got the score closer than the final margin of 6 points. Leading the way for the Tigers was Mitch Suder with 11 points, Jacob Campbell with 10, and freshman Collin Hedgepeth with 8. The loss drops the Tigers to 4-4 in ECC play and 7-7 overall.

Adam Clark commits to Cleveland State LOVELAND - Loveland High School lacrosse junior Adam Clark recently committed to play NCAA Division I lacrosse at Cleveland State University. A standout attackman for the 2016 Division I Southern Ohio Region Champion Tigers, Adam announced his decision in November. “Lacrosse is my passion,” said Clark. “Being able to play at the DI level in college has always been a dream for me. I’ve worked hard on and off the field, and I’m excited for the opportunity to play at the next level.” Clark garnered the attention of a number of colleges, including Brown and University of Hartford, but he noted Cleveland State was a good fit for him on a number of levels. “I chose CSU for many reasons. Coach Sheridan and I got along immediately,” Adam said. “He’s very honest and open, and he’s dedicated to developing a top level program at CSU. He and I share similar philosophies on style of play, too.” Heading into his junior season, Clark reflected on his role as an integral part of the Tigers. “I’m looking forward to helping build on the success Loveland had this past spring,” Adam said, a nod to the Tigers’ run through the state playoffs, which included a heart-stopping three overtime win over

then No. 1 state-ranked St. Xavier to advance to the state Final Four. Clark had four goals in that 6-5 win, the biggest win in program history. Loveland fell to eventual state champion Upper Arlington. As a sophomore, Adam set the Loveland single season scoring record with 104 points (74 goals/30 assists) and scooped up 43 groundballs. Coached last season by Mike Pritz, Clark earned multiple la-

crosse honors, including thirdteam all-state, first-team all-region, first-team all-conference, first-team all-city, and was chosen by his teammates as offensive MVP. Off the field he excels in the classroom, carrying a 3.8 GPA and has been recognized for his academics as a member of the National Honor Society. “Adam’s commitment to improve is truly what sets him apart,” said Pritz “To see him

go from a freshman looking for a spot on varsity, to the offensive MVP sophomore year really is incredible. It’s been a pleasure to see his progression as a player.” Adam will now prepare himself for his junior season with the Tigers and his future with the Cleveland State Vikings. - Thanks to Loveland Lacrosse

St. Xavier hockey team boasts new-found confidence Adam Baum abaum@communitypress.com

SPRINGFIELD TWP. - A change in home ice, which meant less practice time, has done little to slow the progress of St. Xavier High School’s hockey team. The Bombers have made the move from the Cincinnati Gardens to Northland Ice Center, and they’ve done it quite well. St. X is currently in second place in the Southwest Ohio High School Hockey League Red Division at 7-1-1, and they’ll have a chance at a league title on Jan. 28 when they play Elder, the team currently in first place at 9-0-1. Zonta Club’s Wine & Dine fundraiser raises $25,000 The Zonta Club of Cincinnati hosted its sixth annual Wine & Dine Scholarship Fundraiser Sept. 17 at the Sharonville Convention Center. A generous crowd had a great time bidding on fabulous silent and live auction items, buying chances for special raffle items, and donating money for the Fund-A-Scholarship auction. The fundraiser generated $25,000, with proceeds to benefit the Zonta Club of Cincinnati’s Ann Rasche Scholarships for women over age 25 enrolled in their first-time degree program at Cincinnati State Technical and Community College, Zonta International Scholarship programs, and other club-approved service projects. Cincinnati State President Monica Posey presented the 2016 Ann Rasche Scholarship certificates to recipients Kimberly Malachi (Cincinnati) and Shayna Werring (Cincinnati). Zonta Club of Cincin-

nati President Pat Jude (Loveland) presented the 2016 Zonta International Club level winner of the Jane M. Klausman Women in Business Scholarship to University of Cincinnati undergraduate student Jada Fountain and the Zonta International Amelia Earhart Fellowship to University of Cincinnati graduate student Jianing Li. All the recipients spoke eloquently about how their scholarships are impacting their educational and future career plans. Zonta International District 5 Gov. Joyce Combs (Defiance) spoke about Zonta International, its mission and goals. Professional Auctioneer Susan Johnson conducted the Live and Fund-AScholarship auctions and kept things moving throughout the event. Renowned pediatric/ oncologist Dr. Beatrice Lampkin was also honored with the inaugural Zonta Club of Cincinnati Marian de Forest award

for her outstanding work in her illustrious career and in Greater Cincinnati. In addition to her groundbreaking work, in 1998 she founded GLAD (Giving Life a Dream) House to help break the cycle of drug and alcohol abuse in five- to eleven-year old children impacted by parental substance abuse. She also led a $1.3 million fundraising campaign to open the Children’s Family House, later known as Ronald McDonald House, to provide a loving, safe, and nurturing home away from home for families of children being treated at Cincinnati Children’s. More than 22,000 families have been welcomed into the home and it is one of the largest of 358 Ronald McDonald Houses that exist worldwide. Defensive driving class earns insurance discount Course must be approved by the state and insurance company Did you know you can save money on your auto insurance if you take a defensive driving class? I, like many Ohioans, was unaware of this possibly because Ohio is not one of the 34 states, including Kentucky, that actually require insurance companies to give you a discount for taking defensive driving classes.

The class I took was sponsored by AARP, but classes are also offered by AAA and the National Safety Council. My class cost $25, and my insurance company gave me a 10 percent discount on a portion of my policy – the liability and property damage portion. That savings comes to $31 each year — and it’s a discount I will get each year for three years.

After that, I can take the defensive driving class again and get the Hey discount Howard! for another three HOWARD AIN years. The course you take must be approved by the state and accepted by your insurance company. Be careful, many states and insurance companies will not ac-

cept an online course. The class I took was done in a classroom with a teacher, a book and videos demonstrating various driving problems. The classes last from four to eight hours – my class was five hours long and it covered everything from amount of assured clear distance you need to keep to where to place your hands on the wheel to avoid getting injured should your airbag go off. The amount of money you can save on your

insurance premium sometimes varies according to your age. The younger you are the more you’ll save on your insurance –up to around 15 percent for 16 to 25 year olds, and as little as 5 percent for those over 55, depending on which insurance company you have. Many insurance companies won’t give you a discount for taking a class if you have had a moving violation within the past five years. In fact, having a speeding ticket can actually increase your

annual premium from 5 percent to 20 percent, depending on your driving record and your insurance company. All insurance companies have their own underwriting guidelines, so it’s important to check with your insurance company before signing up and expecting to get a discount for taking a defensive driving course. Howard Ain appears as the Troubleshooter on WKRC-TV Local 12 News. Email him at hey howard@local12.com.

‘Sweet Soles’ campaign well on way to goal The “Sweet Soles For Love” campaign to collect new shoes for area foster children officially kicked off Jan. 3, and more than several hundred pairs of shoes have already been collected. This year’s goal is at least 500 pairs of shoes, which will be distributed to foster children throughout Hamilton County, Northern Kentucky, Southeastern Indian and Dayton.

The shoe drive will continue through Tuesday, Feb. 14, and the shoes may be dropped off at any of Sibcy Cline’s 22 branch offices between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday-Friday. New shoes with closed toes ranging from infant size through men’s size 12 are greatly needed, and socks are also very much appreciated. For more information visit www.facebook.com/ SweetSoles4Luv.
