Finneytown High School

Five recent graduates recently were inducted into high school chapter of the Cum Laude Society: Elizabeth Clausing, Samantha Garner, Jonathan Gast, Rachel Sauer and Zachary Stump. The students qualified for membership by virtue of maintaining a non-weighted 3.75 grade-point average through seven semesters of high school academics and testing at the 85th percentile on a college admissions test (ACT or SAT). The society is a fellowship of scholars whose purpose is to recognize excellence in academic work.

Winton Woods High School

Chorus, band and orchestra students participated in the Ohio Music Education Association District XIV solo/ensemble contest. Students compete in Class A, the most difficult music, then Class B and Class C.

The varsity ensemble competes in Class AA, while the symphonic band competes in Class B. Earning an outstanding rating were the concert choir in Class B, and the men’s and

SCHOOL NOTES women’s choir, both in Class C. The concert band received a good rating in Class C. • Winton Woods City School District students again have the opportunity to visit area colleges and learn more about their campuses during the school's fifth annual College Tour from June 20 through June 24. Senior counselor Kevin Jones will be leading the tours, which are 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day. The cost is $15 for each day attended or $75 for the week. Students should bring money for lunch each day they attend. This year's colleges are: • Monday, June 20 – Wright State and Central State universities. • Tuesday, June 21 – Miami University and University of Cincinnati. • Wednesday, June 22 – Ohio State University and Cincinnati State Technical & Community College. • Thursday, June 23 – University of Kentucky and Eastern Kentucky University. • Friday, June 24 – Northern Kentucky University and Sinclair Community College. Registration is limited to the first 40 participants. Money and completed permission slips should be given to Winton Woods High School guidance department secretary Pat Woeste. For more information, call Jones at 6192414. • Members of the class of 2011 earned over $6 million in scholarships. In addition to college, graduates enlisted in the military, are entering trade schools and contributing to the economy by seeking employment.

Winton Woods Middle School

Winton Woods High School graduate Jonathan Lee, 27, who writes under the name Jaydon Azariah, recently visited students in the classroom of his former language arts teacher, Matt Alander. Lee has visited the classroom for three years in a row. This time, he spoke about setting goals. When asked, students’ goals included attending college, becoming a sonogram technician, visiting Italy, being a good role model and spending more time with family. Lee then asked them how they were going to achieve their goals. Answers boiled down to staying focused, working hard and staying out of trouble. In addition to his two books, “Half Windsor” and “Full Windsor,” Lee owns two companies, Black Ties Media Productions and Young Masterminds LLC. • Seventh-graders Daniel Carson, Rehyna Hocker, DeShaun McGrone and Cindy Vivar Perez, and eighth-graders Brandon Lee, Orlando Underwood, Michael Webster and Kayla Wiley were named Students of the Month for April. The students were nominated by the teaching staff for good character or a noteworthy deed. The criteria for nomination includes demonstrating leadership, citizenship, being a role model to their peers, good grades or grade improvement, attendance and school achievements.

• The WWMS bands, choirs and orchestra recently participated in the District XIV Ohio Music Education Association Junior High Large Group Adjudicated Event. The ratings are on a scale from 1 to 5 with 1 being superior. The mixed choir, performing in Class B, received a 1, or superior, rating. The eighth-grade band (Class A) and treble choir (Class B) both received a 2, or excellent, rating. The orchestra (Class B) received a 3, or good, rating. The seventh-grade band gave a festival performance, which receives judges comments only. • Choir students recently received awards at the school Spring Sing. Awards presented were: • Eighth-grade Directors Award for Outstanding Choral Member – Alex Kuhn. • Eighth-grade Outstanding Vocalists – Anna Clark and Kayla Wiley. • Eighth-grade Directors Award for Participation – Jasmine Edwards and Tiffany Hudson. • Eighth-grade Most Improved – Aliyah Ledford. • Seventh-grade Director's Award for Outstanding Choral Member – Alysha George and Kamella Wolfork. • Seventh-grade Outstanding Vocalists – Simone Anthony, Kamiy Bomar and Delaney Lindeman. • Seventh-grade Most Improved – Ana DeLeon and David Keeling.

Aquarium field trip

McAuley High School juniors and seniors taking marine biology got to experience aquatic life firsthand at the Newport Aquarium. They visited the aquarium, explored exhibits and completed an assignment, finding answers to questions about rivers, algae, sharks, coral reefs, jelly fish and penguins. They even got to observe the feeding of the sharks. As the field trip ended, the students and teachers Jen Torline and Kevin Stachowski reconnected with alumna Lauren Blum, class of 2009, who has worked at the aquarium for over a year while attending Northern Kentucky University. French honors

Eleven students were inducted into the French Honor Society during a ceremony at St. Ursula Academy. Students must currently be enrolled in French 4 or beyond, have a 3.75 cumulative grade-point average in French and at least a 3.0 GPA in their other classes. SCHOOL NOTES Awards

The following local students received awards, honors and/or scholarships at Xavier University’s All Honors Day: • Ryan Bellamy received the Achieving Seniors Award, given to seniors who have participated at Xavier in an NCAA Division I sport for four years and, after seven full semesters, have a cumulative grade-point average of 3.0 or higher. • Marlene Cruzado-Thiemann was inducted into Alpha Sigma Nu, the Jesuit honor society. Candidates must be outstanding in scholarship, loyalty and service. • John Reilman received the Management Information Systems Leadership Award, presented to an undergraduate student excelling in the study of information systems. • Kelly Schmidt received the Benjamin Urmston Family Peace Studies Scholarship, granted to the peace studies student best demonstrating academic excellence in the peace studies minor and in integrating peace studies into extracurricular activities. • Christina Schneider received the Delta Sigma Pi Scholarship Key, presented to graduating seniors with the highest academic average in the Williams College of Business. Schneider also received the Kohlhepp Top Team Scholar in women’s track, Achieving Seniors Award and Academic Excellence Award. The Kohlhepp Top Team Scholars Award is given to those student-athletes who have attained the highest cumulative gradepoint average on their team, with a minimum of 3.0, over at least three full semesters at Xavier University. • Donielle White received the Community Service Award, which was established to recognize student-athletes who embody the Jesuit philosophy of men and women for others and have demonstrated service to others while at Xavier. White also received the Achieving Seniors Award, given to seniors who have participated at Xavier in an NCAA Division I sport for four years and, after seven full semesters, have a cumulative grade-point average of 3.0 or higher.

• Mount Healthy resident Tyler Davis, a student in Cincinnati State Technical & Community College’s landscape horticulture program, placed 12th overall out of 800 students during the recent Student Career Days competition. Davis placed 11th in compact excavator operation and computer-aided landscape design, and 15th in maintenance cost estimating. The event was sponsored by the Professional Landcare Network. Cincinnati State placed 20th out of 60 college and universities.

Scholarships

The following students have received scholarships from Xavier University: • St. Xavier High School senior John Rothan has accepted a Presidential Scholarship from Xavier University. At St. X, Rothan is active in band, chorus and theater, and plans to major in music education at Xavier. He is the son of Regina and Mark Rothan of Springfield Township. • Roger Bacon High School senior Jenna Graham has received a Leadership Award. At Roger Bacon, Graham is active in athletics and service. She is the daughter of Deborah Graham of College Hill. The Leadership Award recognizes a student’s academic achievement, leadership and overall involvement. • Winton Woods High School senior Zauntre Dyer has received a Dean’s Award. At Winton Woods, Dyer was active in football and sports marketing. He is the son of Martin and Zawra HenryHampton of Forest Park. All incoming freshmen are evaluated for Xavier’s Trustee and Presidential Scholarships, and the Dean’s and Schawe Awards. Award levels vary.

At Walnut Hills, Beckett is active in the choir and Spanish Club. The daughter of Ginnger Beckett of Mount Airy, she plans to major in biology and Spanish. • McAuley High School senior Kathyna Gutman has received a Dean’s Award. At McAuley, Gutman is active in service, as a youth coach and in the Key Club. The daughter of Jim Gutman of Mount Healthy, she plans to major in graphic design.

Miscellaneous

The following Xavier University students will present research at the National Conference on Undergraduate Research March 31-April 2 at Ithaca College in New York: • Elyse Krause will present three pieces of research: “The Ability of Fans to ‘Get Over’ a Negative Sport Memory with the Passage of Time,” “The Intrapersonal and Interpersonal Consequences of Identifying with a Sports Team” and “Gender Empowerment and Domestic Violence: A State by State Analysis.” Krause is a senior psychology/economics double major. • Tessa Hackett will present “Witnessing the Public Verbal Abuse of a Child by an Authority Figure: Would You Intervene?” Hackett is a senior psychology major. • Samuel Gorman was a member of the ensemble in “The Drowsy Chaperone,” which was performed recently at Denison University’s Ace Morgan Theatre. “The Drowsy Chaperone,” a “musical within a comedy,” is an homage to American musicals of the jazz age, examining the effect musicals have on the fans who adore them.
