SCORES ANDERSON

ANDERSON TWP. — As Ben Correll heard his second shot hit the pin on the ninth hole at Coldstream Country Club, he had one thing going through his mind. “Don’t bounce off green. I actually thought it was going off green. I was really happy (it stayed on there),” he said. Correll struck the superb shot from 74 yards out on the fairway with his 60-degree wedge. Shortly after the shot, he putted out and finished his round with a 34. The score earned the junior medalist honors, as Anderson won its second straight King of the Hill over Turpin and McNicholas, 163-177-188, Sept. 17. Korey Aukerman was Anderson’s second man with a round of 41. Aukerman also had a highlight-worthy moment. On the par 3, second hole, his tee shot landed about 10 feet from the cup. For both golfers, the win was filled with

vindication because Anderson lost a tiebreaker to Turpin at Ivy Hills Sept.10. Turpin was declared the winner because their sixth man had the better score (In high school golf, the top four scores from each team are used). “(Winning King of the Hill feels) pretty

good since we lost to Turpin in the dual match, but now it feels good to beat them again,” Aukerman said. Said Correll, “Turpin won at Ivy Hills, which is my home course, but it felt a lot better than coming down to the sixth man. We just won it outright today.” Through Sept. 16, Correll led the Eastern Cincinnati Conference with a 38.43 average. He said his skills on the green have helped him stay consistent throughout the season. “My putting has been helpful. The weeks my putting isn’t there, I tend to shoot high 30s or low 40s...Putting is the key to my game right now.” For Turpin, senior Nick Ewan led the way with a 42, while Will Gunzenhaeuser shot a 43. Ewan owns the league’s third best average (39.40). McNick’s top scorers included Mitch Bloemer and Eric Boychan. Both golfers shot 46. Turpin offense kicks into gear Team ranked 7th in D-I coaches poll By Nick Dudukovich ndudukovich@communitypress.com

ANDERSON TWP. — When it comes to defeating neighborhood rivals, the girls of the Turpin High School girls soccer team know what it takes to get the job done. The Spartans blanked McNicholas 4-0, Sept. 10 and followed up by defeating Anderson, 2-0, Sept. 18. Turpin head coach Larry Chialastri said beating rivals is always important. “There’s such good soccer here. To beat both rivals always feels pretty good,” he said. Since the Anderson win, the squad’s hit a bump in the road with losses to Glen Este (1-0) Sept. 18 and Mount Notre Dame (5-0) Sept. 22. But heading into the Glen Este match, Turpin had been posting some serious offensive numbers. The Lady Spartans (4-3-2, 12-0), who ranked seventh in the

Enquirer’s Division I coaches’ poll, scored nine combined goals in matches against Lakota East, McNick and Anderson. Chialastri’s decision to move Payton Atkins to midfield contributed to that run. The sophomore responded by scoring three goals in three games. “…She’s really opened up the attack,” Chialastri said. “I like having her ability in the midfield.” Caroline Mink has been responsible for turning up the scoring on Bartels Road. The freshman is tied for third in the Eastern Cincinnati Conference with 12 points coming off five goals and two assists. “She’s got an engine that never quits, and she’s starting to finish now,” Chialstri said. “Early in the preseason, she was getting looks, now she’s starting to put the ball in the back in the net.” Junior Anna Cipollone has also played an increased role. She was moved into the attacker/ midfielder role and came up with goals against McNick and Lakota East. See SOCCER, Page A7
