Once accepted, students are required to maintain high GPAs in Honors, Advanced Placement and Advanced College Prep classes along with participating in the program’s activities. At the end of freshman year, each student selects her area of study to follow for the next three years, and the group divides into medicine, law or engineering. Upon

Women in Medicine grad’s success story

Women in Medicine graduates are currently pre-med students with majors in biology and zoology. Others are studying pharmacy, speech and hearing sciences, and physical therapy. Elizabeth Brock (’11), graduated in the first Women in Medicine class. She currently attends the University of Cincinnati as a nursing major. Elizabeth says: “Women in Medicine

showed me a huge variety of careers available in the medical field and helped me determine which one would best suit my lifestyle and goals. I found that nursing was the best job for me, primarily because of direct patient interaction. I really enjoyed the monthly meetings that gave us an upclose and personal look into the lives of different medical professionals.” Elizabeth found attending field trips, such as visiting a cadaver lab and being in the operating room at Mercy Mt. Airy Hospital to watch a surgery, to be the most valuable. “I still keep in contact with some of the staff at Mercy Hospital from my volunteering days with Women in Medicine. Being a part of this program was an awesome experience that really showed me what it’s like to work in health care.”

Exploring facets of engineering, law

Annie Helpling (’14) and Malina Creighton (’15) are current students in the Women in Engineering and Women in Law programs, respectively. Annie says: “Women in Engineering has been beneficial because it has exposed us to different fields of engineering and how they

could be put to use in different careers. I have found subjects, like chemical engineering, that are interesting to me and I would consider as a major.” Annie enjoyed visiting P&G and Smucker’s as well as the opportunity to work on a 3-D printer. To anyone considering a career in engineering, Annie says, “Women in Engineering will educate you on the different types of engineering and can help you find the best fit for your future. In addition, it’s great to have on a résumé and college application for competitive engineering schools.” Malina has had a similar experience in Women in Law. She participates in the Mock Trial Program, which has given her insight into the field and what goes on in a courtroom. Malina says: “I have found the Women in Law Program beneficial because I am not only learning court room procedures, but also participating in hands-on experience in the field of law.” Malina adds, “My favorite experience so far has been visiting the Police Academy and testing the gun simulator. Being part of this program has given me advanced knowledge of the law field and has definitely opened my eyes to a ca-

reer in law.”
