Joseph D. Atherton, Western Hills, died Sept. 26. He was a sergeant with the Cincinnati Police Department. When Sgt. Atherton requested his transfer from District 5 to serve as a relief supervisor at Cincinnati Police Communications Section in August 1981 he never dreamed he would eventually be assigned to a subcommittee of police division and Cincinnati Bell Telephone employees to usher in a new age of emergency communications: the 911 system. Mr. Atherton was appointed to the subcommittee in the mid-1980s, and by Aug. 17, 1988, just six months before his retirement, 911 was partially implemented. During his 22-year career with Cincinnati Police, Mr. Atherton served in Districts 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6, as well as the Criminal Justice Unit, the Training Section and in Police Communications. Survived by wife Karen Atherton; brother William Atherton; many nieces and nephews. Preceded in death by brothers John, Thomas Atherton. Services were Oct. 3 at St. William. Sister Martha Farlow

Sister Martha Farlow, 91, died Sept. 27 at Mother Margaret Hall. Born Elise Farlow, she was a Sister of Charity of Cincinnati for 72 years. She ministered in both elementary and secondary education, as well Farlow as serving as a high school counselor, including at St. John the Baptist Harrison and St. Dominic. She returned to the Sisters of Charity of Cincinnati Motherhouse in 1997 to volunteer as needed and serve in the Ministry of Prayer. Preceded in death by brothers Emil, Carl Farlow. Donald Giessler

Donald C. Giessler, 85, died Sept. 15. He owned Don Giessler Carpet and Sales. He was a 1944 Elder High School graduate.
