THANKS TO CHRISTOPHER COLE
NKU is launching one of the few nurse anesthesia programs in the country. It will culminate in a Doctor of Nursing Practice nurse anesthesia specialization, which will help to fill a local and national shortage of Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists. Pictured is this year’s NKU Nurse Anesthesia Program student cohort.
Nurse anesthesia program at NKU will start in May Fewer than 120 universities in the nation have a nurse anesthesia program and that number has grown by one with the accreditation of Northern Kentucky University’s new program from the Council on Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Educational Programs. NKU has developed a Nurse Anesthesia Program that will help fill the local and national shortage of Certified Registered Nurse Anes-
thetists (CRNAs). “We are pleased to expand our educational offerings to fill the national and local need for CRNAs,” said Dr. Dale Scalise-Smith, dean of the College of Health Professions. The program was developed by Dr. William Terry Ray, former director of the University of Cincinnati Nurse Anesthesia Major. Dr. Ray will direct the program and the first cohort of students will begin taking
classes on May 8, 2017. Applications for admission into the next cohort will be accepted beginning June 1. The Nurse Anesthesia Program is a 36-month (106 semester hours) curriculum culminating in a Doctor of Nursing Practice nurse anesthesia specialization with a population focus of the family/individual across a lifespan. Graduates will be eligible for the National Board of Certification

Miles Elementary student Ella Bailey was named the Kenton County winner in the 2016 Jim Claypool Conservation Art Contest. This contest was produced as a partnership between Kentucky Farm Bureau and the Kentucky Association of Conservation Districts, and themed: “Backyard Adventures Exploring the Trees in your Hometown.” Students grades K-12 from across the Com-
monwealth used the backyard adventures theme to create 44,152 art entries. Judges from the local conservation districts chose county winners, whose entries then moved on to the state-level competition. A panel of judges with diverse environmental backgrounds selected statewide winners in both writing and art categories. State, area and county winners received a check sponsored by the Kentucky Farm Bureau.
