West Clermont works to improve communication

By Kellie Geist kgeist@communitypress.com

The West Clermont Local School District Communication Committee is well on its way to fulfilling its strategic plan goals. As part of the district’s new strategic plan, the committee was charged with evaluating and improving how the district communicates with staff, parents, business people and other stakeholders as well as the media.

During the school board meeting Monday, Sept. 27, Communication Director Sharon Oakes told the board about some of the things the committee is doing to improve the district’s communication. She said the biggest thing the district uses to keep the community informed is the West Clermont Connection, a weekly e-mail newsletter. Oakes said the Connection goes to about 3,500 people.

Oakes said the Connection also helps the district garner feedback – solicited and non-solicited – on a variety of subjects. “There is never a Connection when I don’t get feedback. I love that we can reach out and showcase our district, but also stay connected and get feedback from the community,” she said. Oakes said the district distributes a Pay Day Update, or internal newsletter, to each employee on pay day including information

about other employees, district happenings and a “for sale” section. West Clermont also communicates through the district website, press releases, postcards, local media and more. “We really try to communicate with everyone. If we’re not reaching you, please let us know,” she said. Superintendent Gary Brooks said communication is an important part of the strategic plan,

which will act as a guide for the district. “The strategic plan will carry the district and the board for many years ... We need to keep (it) in front of the board,” Brooks said. He said the board will hear updates from other strategic plan committees in the near future. For more information about the strategic plan or the district, or to be added to the Connection e-mail list, call West Clermont at 9435000.
