Baron Comeback helps students understand college

By Kellie Geist kgeist@communitypress.com

When you’re a junior or senior in high school, it can be overwhelming to think about college. Between filling out applications, worrying about future roommates and picking a major, it’s an experience that’s hard to wrap your head around. That’s why the counselors at Amelia High School put together the Baron Comeback. During this event, which was held Dec. 22, about 50 students had a panel discussion with eight recent Amelia High School graduates. These new college students talk about what college is like and what to expect. Heather DeVore, a senior at Amelia, said she attended the Baron Comeback for a little insight

on the overall college experience. “I thought it would be beneficial because I’ve been looking forward to college and what it will be like. They can really tell me how it is, they were just in our shoes,” DeVore said. “These are our friends up there and they’re telling us the truth.” Lisa Edgar, who works at Amelia High School part-time through Clermont 20/20, said the Baron Comeback is helpful because hearing about college from a former student is more helpful than hearing it from a counselor. “I think this makes college real for them ... If I say it, its one thing, but it sinks in more if it’s coming from a peer,” Edgar said. DeVore said some of the things she was interested to hear about

man, a 2009 Amelia graduate who attends Indiana University, said she knew she wanted to participate in the Baron Comeback after she attended as a student. “I did this last year and I wanted to be on the other side of it. I wanted to help people out because I know how remiss I was about the application process and other things,” Rothman said. “This program really helped me last year, so I wanted to be involved.” Rothman said the students asked many of the questions she expected to hear, including questions about applications, classes and dorms. “I hope we helped. I know a lot of the students who came and I feel like the things we talked about are things I wanted to know, too,” Rothman said.
